Jett felt himself going numb as he walked through Rustboro, healing his Pokemon in stony silence. With a quiet thanks, he left the building and began striding towards the end of the town.

Each step forward only seemed to encourage the thoughts in his mind, but he settled for replaying the battle in his head, seducing thoughts of anger and shame. He ignored trainers' requests for battle as he crossed the bridge, and those who decided to be persistant only earned an icy glare, which quickly silenced them.

I could go back into Petalburg Woods and catch a Shroomish, he thought as the mental battle ended, but that thought only earned a snort and a quick shake of his head. The trainer was not the type to add some new powerhouse to his team if he lost. No, he would merely train the Pokemon that lost so hard that Roxanne wouldn't know what hit her. He was exactly that type of stubborn.

Finally, he stopped, concealed in the small patch of open grass behind the house that lay right near the Petalburg exit. The area was surrounded by trees, and Jett knew exactly how he would use them.

With a small sigh, he took the two Pokeballs and unceremoniously popped them open, letting his two Pokemon out.

Aerosmith glared at the ground angrily, tiny arms crossed, wings fluttering with added power, as if to prove that he was fully better. He merely spat out a grumpy "Beautifly!" and looked up at Jett.

River was silent, still, and staring up at her trainer. On one hand, she was angry with him for recalling her before she was perfectly done with the battle. On the other hand, she was grateful for being recalled because she knew she wouldn't have won, but she was slightly ashamed for losing in the first place when she had planned to never do it again since the battle with Leon.

"We lost," Jett said simply, eyes trained upon the clouds above. "It's all of our faults. But we're not here to feel guilty and put ourselves in some funk. That wouldn't help at all." He paused, letting the words rest on his tongue, and started speaking again, tone harsher than before. "So we're going to train. And I promise you, it will be intense. I'm going to get you near your twenties. So here's where the catch is."

River looked up, interest caught, though she still scowled.

Aerosmith still stared at Jett, expression never changing.

"This is only the first gym leader. They will get harder and tougher as we go on. Sometimes, we'll have the type advantage. Other times, we'll have no advantage at all. So we'll make up for it by training. And training won't always be as easy as it's going to be. So here's your chance. If you can't handle this, then leave now."

River was shocked. Leave? Her? If she left, Jett wouldn't know what to do without her! I'm tired of being scared, the Feeling Pokemon thought. And I know this will help! So with a small smile, the Ralts hurried over to Jett's side, nodding fiercely.

Aerosmith merely snorted, the answer obvious in his head. He wanted to be stronger, and he had only gotten so far because of this kid. So he flew over a moment after River and let out an affirmative "Fly."

"All right, then," Jett said coolly, but he was wearing a grin as fierce as the three of them felt. "Let's get to work."

“Quiiiiiiil!” Cindy squealed in joy, waving her hands about as she arrived in Violet Town riding in the basket of Scarlet’s bike. It was always awesome to take a short break and feel the wind through her hair, which, now that she thought about it, wasn’t really all that long. Quickly, a massive, domed building came into view.

“Heh heh. See that, Cindy?” Scarlet’s bike skidded to a stop in front of the first gym in the Johto league. “This is where we’re gonna beat our first gym leader into the ground. You know. After we build up our team s’more.”

Cindy whined, staring up at Scarlet with a pout on her face. How many team mates are we talking? We don’t have to wait forever for this, do we?

“Don’t lookit me like that,” her trainer said with a chuckle. And, after a pat on the head, the little Cyndaquil responded with a grin. Scarlet and Cindy hopped off of the bicycle, which was promptly refolded and hidden deep away in the depths of Scarlet’s magical bag. The two then spun around, strolling over the tiny grey wooden bridge to the massive tower at the back of the tower. “This is it, Cindy. Let’s get lots of training done, okay?”

Mike blew on his nails as Kilik screamed and hollered for Cable to pull himself up. "Relax." he said to himself. "He wouldn't even make it halfway down before Napalm would grab him." If he was feeling like a supreme a*****e, he would have had his Pokemon run over and step on Cable's hands, keeping him in place but securing a win. That would be so embarrassing for Kilik, Mike thought with a grin. He giggled. But no, this fight was going to be settled fair and square, with Kilik understanding that his zappy tiger couldn't hold a candle, much less a lightbulb to his Magmar.

"Napalm!" shouted Mike. "Don't waste your energy trying to dodge the Shockwave. He must be tired. Let's gun him down with an Overheat! A GIFT FROM MY LOVE!" the boy screamed, both his hands igniting at his sides. "BURN!"

The Magmar planted his feet in the ground, crossing his arms across his face and tanking the weak (compared to other moves in Cable's arsenal) attack. Napalm drew his head back, taking in a deep breath of air before launching a massive fireball straight towards the panting Electabuzz.

"Let's see you dodge THAT!" Mike shouted as he watched the attack rip through the sky. "K'ya HA HA HA HA!!" he cackled, smoke pouring from his mouth.

Sasha tensed up. Mike was ruthless! Launching the most powerful fire type move at an already fatigued Pokemon was a bit overkill. "Why would he do z'hat?" she asked Blaine.

"Because he's overeager and insane, for one." replied the Gym Leader. "He thinks victory is within his grasp so he unloads his Pokemon's most powerful move. Overheat is an incredibly risky move. You should be near certain it will hit before using it. If you miss, the consequences could prove detrimental to your Pokemon."

The girl looked on in fright. "He's just playing. He's just playing. He's just playing." she repeated. "He's just playing around, right Kass?" she asked her friend, her eyes already showing she knew the answer.

The Omanyte remained calm amidst all the laughing and screaming. He was Mike's Pokemon, so he'd become somewhat used to it. He could tell by the voice that it was Mike. If it was someone else, then he'd be retreating. Rather enjoying himself, the Omanyte continued to wriggle on the blond girl's thigh, getting himself comfortable before plopping down and relaxing.

Of course. the Breloom replied. I can understand you not wanting to get lost in here. Thankfully, it is much cooler in the laboratory than in the actual volcano, so there is at least that, were you to find yourself lost. Portabello motioned for Keegan to follow and lead the group. His large nailed feet clicked lightly on the ground as he walked with certainty through the Gym Leader's lab. As he walked by the now destroyed bathroom he let loose a sigh of relief. Thank goodness that Napalm was quick to respond or we would have lost him again. the Pokemon thought to himself.

After a few minutes of walking, the three made their way to the large steel door that separated the lab from the Gym. Just through this door and... the Breloom effortlessly pushed the massive doors open, revealing the scene of a frantic battle. Mike sat atop a somewhat familiar looking Pokemon, his hands spewing flames as he laughed. The Breloom looked at the battle, and the source of the boy's laughter. Napalm had launched an Overheat at Cable, who looked almost too tired to move. M-master seems to be enjoying himself the Pokemon said, smiling nervously.

Jett began pacing about the area, eyes flickering from one piece of nature to the other. With every step, his brain mapped out another potential strategy, another training session, just anything to give them an advantage. Finally, he paused, staring at the two Pokemon.

"Before we even get into strategies and combinations and tricky moves," he began in a mild tone, "it'd be good to have your attacks mastered. Otherwise, every other strategy might as well be trash. River, if your only attack is Confusion, I want it to be at its best. Aerosmith, your Absorb was basically useless once the target could move. So, we'll work on that." There was another pause in which the boy stared at his companions with such intensity that they thought they would burst into flames. "River, practice your evasive tactics. Make use of Double Team and Teleport. Aerosmith, hit her with a good Absorb."

River immediately shot forward, gaining more distance from the angry Beautifly. As she felt the energy begin to drain, she used Teleport, appearing on a branch. A very high branch. She waved and used Teleport again.

Aerosmith was angry. Well, more than usual. The tiny one kept flickering around, and she wouldn't stand still. Then, he realized that Jett was right and then he got even angrier. With a venomous "Fly!", he began to charge after the Feeling Pokemon, intent upon pinning her down and sucking the life out of her!

Well, that was a tad violent.

Finally, the Beautifly was successful, crowding around River and intimidating her. She couldn't move now--

River let out a small cry and Teleported away, skidding on the ground behind Aerosmith, panting.

Jett watched in silence as his Pokemon played around. C'mon... you can do it... In all honesty, he was unsure of who he was cheering for. He wanted River's teleport limit to rise, and she hadn't even touched Double Team yet, but at the same time, he needed Aerosmith's Absorb power to improve. As well for his instinct and strategy, since he was merely rushing the Pokemon.

They had a long way to go.

Planting his feet hard against the Gym floor, Kilik threw his arms up to shield himself from the heat caused by the powerful Fire attack. Coupled with the heat from the volcano, he could barely even hang on himself. "Cable!!!" Kilik cried out, gritting his teeth. He couldn't even turn to see what was happening, lest his eyes feel like they were going to burn out.

Cable threw his hands up in front of him, palms facing the incoming fireball. "Eleeee..." he growled, sparks starting to form between his finger tips. "Buuu!!!" He pushed hard, a Discharge forming in his hands, pressing against the Overheat. Fire and lightning darted all over the arena, and Cable felt his legs buckling beneath him. The Gym floor cracked underneath him, leaving holes that matched his feet perfectly. He pushed as hard as he could, pouring as much energy as possible into the Discharge to try and deflect that Overheat as far away as possible.

The strain, however, became too much. His Discharge fizzled out and he immediately became engulfed by the flames, the fireball crashing into him and the floor. Cable closed his eyes tightly and grit his teeth, then let out a scream of anguish. When the fire died down, Cable took a step forward. Miraculously, he was still standing. The Electabuzz gave Napalm a hearty thumbs up and immediately fell face down afterward.

Kilik looked back at the battle to see Cable had been defeated. He was awestruck. For the first time, their battle hadn't been considered a draw. It sucked big time that Cable had been on the losing end, but he didn't mind all that much. He knew that the Electabuzz would continue to grow and get stronger and that one day, he'd challenge Napalm again and settle the score. Kilik dashed over to his Pokemon and knelt down. "That was incredible, Cable," he said to the unconscious Pokemon, "I had no idea you were that powerful..." He recalled the Pokemon into it's ball for a well-earned rest and stood up, looking over at Mike and Napalm (and Magnezone by extension).

"Great job, Mike," he said, giving his friend a thumbs up just as Cable had done. "You deserved it. Now," he laughed, scratching the back of his head, "Where can I heal Cable at?" He put the ball on his belt and then crossed his arms. "And would anyone care to tell me, in detail, what it is exactly we're doing here besides 'going to break s**t'?"

Kasiya smiled down at Camarae as he got comfortable, and she wrapped both arms around him as the coolness of his body was helping her to not overheat in the already superheated Volcano. Speaking of Overheat, Napalm had just launched a tremendous ball of fire at Cable, and before the electricity and flames had even died away Kasiya knew it was over.

"Maybe," she said quietly, answering Sasha's desperate plea, but she knew the answer as well. She hugged the Omanyte a little more firmly. Despite Mike's laughter and crazed attitude, her own desire to battle had been sparked. "All this battling is making me want to join in," she said, looking past Sasha at Blaine, the flames from Napalm's Overheat reflecting in his dark glasses. I wonder if it would be in bad form to challenge him for a Volcano Badge right here and now, she thought, looking down at the arena as Kilik had ran out to check on Cable.

...and then it opened its mouth wide and yawned before sitting back on its haunches, scratching at its ear with a hind foot. If ever there was a time for an anime-style fall, this was it, as both Jake and Turtwig could only look on with confusion. "The move... failed?" Jake asked cautiously. The Pachirisu looked over at him and twitched an ear before giving him a great buck-toothed grin. Jake suddenly was certain that this Pachirisu didn't know how to use Discharge - thankfully. Not that he knew that Grass-type Pokemon like Turtwig resisted Electric-type moves or anything, but he was thankful nevertheless.

"Oh, drat," Beth sighed. "I guess my Pachirisu doesn't know that move yet. I saw a battle on TV and this one trainer's Pachirisu could use Discharge! It was so powerful, lightning everywhere! Oh well, we will just have to use your other moves until then. Peaches, use your Charm!" she cried.

"Pachi chii!" the EleSquirrel cried, hopping around in a circle before she turned and hid behind her bushy tail. She peeked out at Turtwig and gave him an adorable little smile, and even Jake couldn't help but grin like an idiot at the Squirrel's cute antics. Turtwig blinked a few times and shook his head. This was an attack? However, he couldn't help but give a bit of a dopey smile when Peaches winked at him, and he suddenly felt a lot less inclined to harm her. This had most definitely been Beth's plan as a moment or so later she'd commanded a Quick Attack from Peaches, and in a blur of white and blue she traversed the distance between herself and Turtwig and slammed into the Tiny Leaf Pokemon. Turtwig was a bit heavier than she was though and the impact wasn't that great. Turtwig nipped at her as she darted away again, and he looked over his shoulder at Jake. This squirrel was really starting to irritate him.

Keegan glanced over at Mitsu as she had started to follow Portabello out of the lab, and he smirked a bit, shaking his head. He'd never had a reason to be his normal, crass self with the purple-haired girl, as she'd never really done anything to provoke it. Even after her blue Houndoom had burned his arm he still hadn't felt angry towards her, mostly because that entire day had been chaos and she wasn't really at fault.

They'd reentered the arena just in time to see the match end, apparently with Napalm as the victor judging by that impressive Overheat he'd just launched, and Keegan felt a slight twinge of jealousy towards Mike. He'd love to raise and train a Magmar, though he wasn't entirely sure where he'd find one. Magby and Magmar were one of the few fire types his parents' breeding facility didn't have, at least not now, and he made a mental note to check his Pokedex later. After all, since he'd given Mori to Miharu, save for Helios his team was painfully devoid of fire types.

He lit a cigarette and stopped at the edge of the arena, hearing Kilik's comment. He smirked and scratched his chin. "Breaking s**t, eh? I'm down with that." The redhead smirked again and enjoyed a long drag of his smoke. Perhaps him coming along with Kasiya, Sasha and Mitsu wasn't going to be such a waste of his time after all.
=====
The bug catcher muttered something under his breath, possibly a curse word of sorts, when he saw that his Ariados had become paralyzed, and he glared across the battlefield at Miharu. "You're really starting to tick me off, you know that?" he growled. Miharu simply shrugged in reply, and he glared at her. "Ariados, use Night Shade to teach that overgrown sheep a lesson!"

The arachnid hissed and waved its forearms in the air, a sinister shadow creeping out from under him. It crept across the battlefield and engulfed Sparkle, who cried out in pain from the attack. "Shake it off and use Tackle," Miharu said quickly. The Flaaffy's limited move pool was still quite the problem, but she'd have to find a way to remedy that later as the Wool Pokemon charged at her opponent, landing a very straight-forward hit against the Ariados. Sometimes basic attacks are the only way to go, she thought, shrugging.

"Ariados, counter with Fury Swipes!" the bug catcher shouted, but the paralysis chose that very moment to seize its target, and it remained motionless on the spot, twitching ever so slightly as stray static bolts traversed its long legs.

Jett watched. And watched. And watched. Literally nothing was happening, just the two dancing around, not attacking. So he felt himself getitng lost within his thoughts.

Aerosmith is a glass cannon... Absorb'll be extremely useful, but one solid blow can knock him right out. Why'd I go catch a Pokemon that's weak to the gym leader I knew I was going to face? he thought, scowling slightly. Well, at least I'll never do it again...

River had now multiplied, and they all leapt and ran and scattered about. She smiled slightly, but fatigue was quickly taking its toll. She wouldn't last much longer like this...

Aerosmith grew tired of all these little scattering ones, and began a barrage of violet needles, slicing through clones that vanished upon contact. Finally, he eliminated the three fakes, and a String Shot snagged the Ralts around the waist. He hurled her into the air, and while she was in shock and unable to do much, he began his Absorb!

River was suddenly flying. She didn't recall having that ability, and now Aerosmith was using Absorb. That cheap jerk! He purposefully waited for her to get tired!

The Feeling Pokemon suddenly disappeared and came back to existance grabbing onto the Beautifly's legs. She swung back and forth before she finally flipped, her feet slamming right into the Bug-type's face.

"F-fly!?" Aerosmith cried, surprised by the sudden power of the Psychic. He fell back, but managed to stay flying right before he would've hit the ground.

River flipped once more and landed, gasping for air for a moment, but that quickly ceased. She lifted up her tiny white paw and motioned the Beautifly to come at her, smirking.

"Oho," Jett murmured from the sidelines, chin resting in his palm. "This might be interesting after all."

“Dodge with your own Quick Attack, Kokoro!” Claire ordered as the Espeon drew dangerously close. But, after a split second, both Pokemon had switched sides of the battlefield and were completely unharmed after the opening rounds. “Go for a Smokescreen!” The fire mouse obliged and soon had a decent amount of smoke obscuring Moti’s side of the arena.

”Well, well. That’s a good strategy, but unfortunately for you, we’ve got a move that never misses! Let ‘em have it Yang!” Moti shouted across the haze which had pretty much blocked off his entire view of the battlefield.

“Roger Momo!” The Espeon shouted as several pink stars formed around her head and began whirling into the black haze leaving behind an impressive trail of pink pixie dust.

“Crap! There’s no use dodging it so try to take control of it with your special move…” she paused and clutched her head, “like we tried with those rocks in our training.” But what had they been training for? It seemed like she was working very hard for something in the brief memory flash. Plus going out in the middle of the woods to blast rocks with psychic energy didn't seem like something a normal kid would be doing... Those thoughts would have to wait for another time as Kokoro was deftly battling the seven stars that were floating at her.

Like the Cyndaquil, each of the stars was covered by a golden light and they had slowed down significantly although closer observation would show that they were still drifting toward the fire mouse. “You can do it Kokoro, smash those stars into the ground!” Claire encouraged, although it didn’t look like the odds were entirely in their favor.

”My, my! I’ve never heard of a psychic Cyndauil! But when it comes to psychic power, I’m afraid you’ll never defeat an experienced psychic type like my cute little Espeon here. Go ahead and power those stars through with your Psychic attack, Yang!” Moti ordered.

“Sorry, Kokoro-ro!” The Espeon chimed as she began to glow faintly pink. Her energy flowed over to the pink stars and soon sandwiched the golden aura that formed because of Claire’s Cyndaquil. After another moment, the stars began to pick up pace closing the gap on their target.

Ugh. I’m tired of this crap! I know I can do it, I just need a little more power! the Fire Mouse vented to herself. But the stars were closing in and still gaining speed. With a bright flash of light and a loud boom, they collided into their target in the (mostly faded) smoke.

Crenu rose an eyebrow as he saw the dragon cower behind the couch again, ignoring Riza's comment about him frightening the it. As she explained her thoughts on naming pokemon Crenu looked around, noticing that his two 'ghosts' had disappeared for now. They only seemed to come when he was idle and by himself, as long as he kept busy training or was with someone conversing then his mind was to busy to hallucinate. Looking down at Riza and seeing her smiling at him again and looking very cute was...nice. He started to feel a smile tug at the side of his mouth, a subconscious reaction that she had started to provoke from him, but Ayane's words shot through his mind at that moment and he managed to catch himself in time to stop it from happening. His expression remained calm, and slightly annoyed, though the look in his eyes wasn't it's usual fierceness. Instead it was almost calm and friendly, though it was completely unknown to him as he still felt the same as he always did. "Hmm, I see. Though if you pokemon was fighting against another of the same species, it should be able to recognize your voice and your command. I'm not really sure an identity crisis is going to be a big concern in battle unless the pokemon is new to you." Was all that came to mind after she had finished, that hadn't helped at all really but then again it wasn't exactly an important question.

Still, it did get him thinking. Why not give pokemon names? Sure there was the concept that the caught pokemon were the 'property' of the trainer that caught them, but that didn't make pokemon second class citizens or anything. Pokemon were intelligent creatures that some believed predated people and in the end would probably be around after human kind vanished from the world. The species were given names and classifications for the identification of the species as a whole, humans were a species just the same. The concept of names for identification was adapted and practiced by humans, but who's to say that pokemon didn't have names in their own communities? Giving pokemon names only seemed like the proper thing to do at this point, at least in Crenu's mind, but he was brought back from the depths of his mind when Riza pointed out the time. Looking at his watch he nodded, it had indeed gotten late. "You're right, guess we've accomplished a lot more than we thought today." Crenu offered Riza a hand to help her up, still refusing to smile, though he did look at her with much gentler eyes. "We should register for tomorrows contest before it's to late, then get something to eat. Is that alright with you?"

"Ah, I see your Roselia has a special attack. It's going to take more that that though! Cherrim dodge and counter with a Solar Beam!" Gardenia commanded pointing at the Thorn Pokemon, her shawl flowing in the same direction. But oh, WOW! What an amazing Roselia! It was so elegant and graceful and perfectly pretty! She just loved it!

As her trainer swooned over the Roselia, Cherrim had another idea. The pink Pokemon flawlessly dodged the Sludge Bomb by moving swiftly to Roselia's left side, it was fairly speedy for a small thing. Planting her feet firmly into the ground the Pokemon's five cherry blossom petals began to shimmer as they collected energy from the strong sunlight above. With the help of the Sunny Day there wasn't much of a pause for Cherrim to charge up. It unleashed all five beams at the Roselia's side. The attack itself was fast and bright, just like the sun. The five separate beams united to form a single, deadly beam that race towards its target.

Mitsu began to follow Portabello out of the room or hallway, where ever they had been, and out into the main room. She took a quick peek over her shoulder to look at the red head behind her. She smiled faintly, silently wondering why the boy had never been mean or sarcastic to her like he was with everyone else, even Kasiya. Whatever the reason, she was glad for it. He was really the only person she'd been comfortable around when it came to sharing her powers. Or well, as comfortable as she could get. She had to admit, she appreciated their small and short moments.

Mitsu had walked in just as the battle was ending. Napalm had launched a particularly fierce Overheat that had manage to knock Cable out. Mitsu looked over to Kilik, she could tell that he was bummed to have lost, though she also guessed that he was incredibly proud of his Electabuzz. Cable was his pride and joy after all. She had stopped by the edge of the arena, near Keegan, and looked around.

Kasiya and Sasha were seated next to Blaine and Mike and Kilik were on opposite sides of each other on the battlefield. Mitsu wanted to go over and console Kilik, though it was probably the last thing he wanted at the moment. That and the thing Mike was currently seated on sure looked unfamiliar, but familiar at the same time. Was that. . .was that Proton? The purple haired girl shook her head, she'd ask Mike about it later. "What'd I miss?" she asked, voicing her questions to no one in particular.

Miharu raised an eyebrow as the Ariados failed to attack, and she looked across the battlefield at the bug catcher, thinking about whether or not she should gloat. Finally, she decided against it, and glanced down at Sparkle. "Should we end this, so that Sam can get on with her gym battle?" she asked, and the Flaaffy nodded and tottered forward, her lightbulb tail swaying with each step she took.

"Flaa-fee!" cried Sparkle, the woolly patches on her body crackling with electricity. Her tail flashed brightly and she raised her arms up, loosing a strong Thunderbolt that coiled around the Ariados like an electric serpent. It didn't even get a chance to cry out as it was knocked out, and it fell to the ground, legs twitching. The bug catcher let out a strangled cry and recalled his fainted Pokemon before stalking away.

The Flaaffy walked back to her trainer's side and beamed up at Miharu, who knelt down and patted her on the head. "You're becoming so strong," she said, standing up again and looking over at Sam. "Well, what next?" she asked.

Afterwards, the old seaman had decided to retire for the night; he needed to wake up early the next morning to man the lighthouse, and so brought Mary-Anne to the guest room before excusing himself to the mysteries of the upper floors of the tower. "Good night, Rosemary!"

Now, although the skies were dark and ominous, it was hardly nine o clock; M.A. couldn't bring herself to sleep already. She was grateful for the man's offer to his house, of course, as the provincial rainstorm would have massacred the poor excuse for a tent that Mary-Anne currently possessed, but truth be told she was utterly bored now and had taken to playing with some candles. Her fingers flickered across the small flame. She felt the uncomfortable heat, but it did not hold; she saw her fingers distinctly within the flames, but they did not burn. Daemyn, ever-faithful and ever-watchful of his somewhat accident-prone master, warily watched her activities. As far as he knew, the girl wasn't immune to fire as he was. To prevent her from being too stupid and burning herself, he licked the wicker despite M.A.'s protests.

Playfully, the girl half-lied on, half-hugged the canine, who wriggled half-heartedly under her grasp. She felt his muscles ripple under his silky fur before he flailed his limbs around so that Mary-Anne was forced to her back, and suddenly jerking his spine around so that he was standing above her. She blinked, pouting. "You win!" she giggled, docking him on the side of his head with a light fist. The canine wolfishly grinned before lapping her chin and cheek, then stepping off to lie next to his master, finished with his display of affection for the day. His eyes slid over to his master, who had picked up another candle to play with. He eyed her thin arms, her generally scrawny outline, and sighed a little bit to himself; with a weak little body like that, how was she ever going to protect herself if he wasn't there? With a pang of regret, he remembered the Beach Party that the Rockets had crashed, remembered that he hadn't been strong enough to protect her altogether.

Ah, well. Tomorrow he'd get Mary-Anne to let him train with that dumb fatass of a Donphan, Tora. That was one thing she was good at.

Meanwhile, Diego was gazing blankly out of the window. His master was nearby somewhere, alive. A torrent of emotion swirled beneath his sleepy gaze. Overwhelming joy, relief, apprehension, anger. Why hadn't he come back to find him? Por que? Had he been abandoned? What if they found him, and he turned them away, having thrown Diego away on that Slateport beach?

Mischievous Ulani snuck up to Diego and pounced on the artist, nearly knocking him over. He didn't shout or make any show of surprise, greatly dissatisfying the Cotton Pokemon. 'What's wrong?' the bird asked, blinking, noting the artist's more-somber-than-usual demeanor. 'We're going to find your master tomorrow! Aren't you excited? M.A.'s terrible with directions, of course, but that's where Daemyn and me can figure things out.'

The Pokemon nodded slowly. Ulani, perching on his shoulder, glanced at his sketchbook. What the what? He was painting another woman again! There, unpretentiously squatting on the page, was the old seaman's Pelipper. 'She's ugly!' The bird squawked. Diego, who tended to fall mildly in love with every new muse he encountered until he finished painting them, glanced at the old man's Pelipper sleeping on the fireplace mantle, and smiled lop-sidedly. Ulani could've sworn she saw hearts flashing in his eyes. Burning with jealousy, the Swablu swallowed some air, inflating with petty anger, and snatched his book away. Diego, snapping out of his general slothfulness, painted himself some wings (which materialized on his back like bright purple angel wings) and gave chase. His book! He'd die of embarrassment if she saw what else he'd been painting.

They zoomed about the common room, knocking over an occasional book or two (Mary-Anne called out that they be careful of candles, almost hypocritical advice) until Ulani, having taken the time to Peck the unsuspecting, good-natured Pelipper on the head, was taken down by Diego. He, like Daemyn to Mary-Anne earlier, also pinned her down. However this time, there was much more tension in their unblinking stare, an intense sort of smoldering, until Ulani was forced to look away. Forcefully, Diego snatched his book away, sulking as he reclaimed his spot by the window. The bird, sulking too, flew over to bother Daemyn instead. Diego had never painted /her/. Yeah, he was a little flirtatious in the beginning, if Ulani recalled correctly, and she had ran away from his advances then, but after he started traveling with M.A.'s little group he had stopped paying attention to the bird altogether. He fell in love with every other female he encountered and painted them all save for Ulani herself! What, wasn't she enough of a girl for him? She was cute, too! Cuter than that Pelipper, anyways. Hell, he even painted Tora one day! And Mary-Anne, when he ran out of subjects to paint! What the what!

Mia raced toward the bathroom after kindly thanking Nurse Joy for taking care of her three Pokemon. Rhyme, Jello, and Scuttles really deserved a good rest after a long day of training. She needed to freshen up before heading to bed. A good night's rest was key to winning a Gym battle! Her dad had taught her that. Mia wondered silently how she would ever beat her father, he was SO great! And SO strong!

The blue haired girl pushed the door open, to see a set of sinks and mirrors on one wall and some stalls on the opposite wall. She elected to hit the sink first, pausing before the mirror. Mia slowly removed her large hair pins, a gift from her father Crasher Wake. They made her look a lot like her father. Even her current clothes, purchased by her father, were chosen to give a sort of matching effect. Crasher Wake had truly become even more attached to his daughter after an unfortunate event had devastated the family.

But now. . .without the hair pins she didn't look so much like dad. A faint smile crept onto her lips making her smile slowly and gently. She had her mother's unmistakable blue hair, it was chopped a lot shorter than hers but the color was true to its roots. Mom would have made sure I looked more girly, Miyamaru thought fondly, though Dad never thought I looked tough enough. But they both thought I was pretty. Brushing her hair from her face she stared at the resemblance to her mother. "How are you mom? I hope you're having a lot of fun wherever you are. I miss you," she whispered quietly.

Mia washed and cleaned up before moving to a private room to sleep. How she'd managed to get a room was amazing, there sure was an influx of trainers in Oreburgh lately. Either way, she'd be the first of them to beat Roark! Mia slowly drifted into dream land as she sunk under the cotton sheets. It was sure nice to rest once in a while.

Tackle and Withdraw, that's all we've got to work with, Jake thought, looking towards the Pachirisu as she danced around Beth, very much proud of herself thus far. Beth seemed equally pleased though she quickly regained her composure. "Peaches, calm down!" she shouted. "We're still battling!" The Pachirisu stopped running and skidded to a stop, looking up at Beth and grinning broadly. "That was a good Quick Attack, try it again!"

"Pachii!" the squirrel shrieked, sprinting at full-tilt towards Turtwig, white light streaming out from behind her.

"Withdraw," Jake said, brushing his hands through his blonde hair, and he wondered idly to himself why it always stuck up the way it did. Maybe I'll have to invest in some hair gel, he thought as Turtwig's legs were pulled in closer to his body, and he tucked his head in. His shell, as it was made from clean and nutrient-rich soil, lacked the qualities of shells similar to Squirtle and Shellder, and he couldn't withdraw into it fully like they could, but it did give off a bit of a sheen as the Tiny Leaf Pokemon's defenses were raised. The Pachirisu named Peaches came barreling into him a split second later, and a Turtwig-sized rut was left over the ground from where he'd slid.

"Twiiig," Turtwig growled, jumping to his feet. All these collisions were starting to hurt. He narrowed his eyes and gave another loud growl. The two leaves atop his head began to glow and suddenly several glowing orbs went spiraling across the battlefield before slamming into a very startled Pachirisu. They seemed to disappear into her body for a second before reappearing again, and they quickly flew back to Turtwig where they vanished into him, and he gave a slight shimmer as some of his health was restored, at Peaches' expense, of course.

"Oh, hey! Your Turtwig knows how to use Absorb!" Beth cried.

"Absorb?" Jake repeated, looking down at Turtwig, who gave a smug smirk in reply.

"Yeah, it damages the opponent and heals your Pokemon at the same time. It's very nifty," the excited girl said, the words coming out of her mouth so fast they nearly formed a single giant one.

"Apparently," Jake mused. Tackle, Withdraw and Absorb. Rowan was right, these little guys certainly do have the potential to grow stronger... He looked over at the Pachirisu. "Absorb," he said simply. It seemed like keeping Turtwig as healthy as possible was a very good idea.
