Sorry bad typo I did mean she xP but she has a male avatar on Zan
And yeah, she's not at gaia much anymore.

It's not necesarily the style that I like, but the amount of detail, and the power the image has. It'd make a great reference of my characters when I want to commission others.

edit: also... I don't have a clue what a nov. '03 is worth...
I barely visit gaia anymore

Is something severely wrong with my contest? Honesty, please, it is the only cure.

I ask because the contest has been open since August 16th. It was scheduled to end tomorrow originally, but as there were only two entries a month ago, I extended to Feb 15th.
There's still only two entries right now.

Prizes total to 500k, with more prizes added the more entries. First place 255k, second place 150k, third 55k.
There's also a pool of 10k per character (totals 40k) that is divided evenly amongst each entry of that character, so that everyone gets something.

Two entries. I wouldn't even be able to give out first, second, and third right now.

What did I do wrong? Really?

Your thread isn't set up in a difficult way (at least to me) and I think your characters are interesting so I don't think it was that. Maybe advertising? Did you advetise a lot? I'm not very familiar with the art contest forum but it seems like more and more people are becoming disappointed with their results :

I think it's getting harder for any contest that doesn't have a very large prize (older donation items, etc.) to get a good number of decent entries. That, and I've seen that there's a pretty wide 'death period' of seasons that don't yield much participation.

sad Sorry to hear that your contest didn't go well!Better luck in the future.

I don't hear contests getting much attention unless they're offering 03 items nowadays.

Maybe, you could end it - give the artists both something they think is fair? Like... maybe 100k each? I dunno, that may be too much or too little depending on the piece quality. I think I heard of someone who did that when she had to close her contest early.

Hmmm..... Looks pretty good to me...especially the run-down and rules bits. wink <3
Heh, actually though, the layout looks nice. Well organized, complete--but not too wordy, nice graphics, etc.

The only things I can think that may have been a turn off for artists are the legnth and the number of prizes.

Six months...thats...really long. Unless you're offering a huuuge prize, I don't think people want to wait around that long. I imagine when it first opened, people saw that the end date was so far off and either they didn't want to wait, or they made a note to come back when it got closer to ending, then forgot. Once you actually were getting close to the end, the page count was way up, and really, people tend to look at old threads less. I think it's important to garner as much interest as possible before the thread gets too many pages. After 6 months of seeing the same thread on the front page of the forum, I imagine it gets skimmed over by artists' eyes looking for a new contest to enter...

As for your prizes...not bad ammounts, but there's just not very many of them. Part. prize pools--lovely idea, but it doesn't really encourage a lot of entries because the more entries there are, the less money they get. Beyond the prize pools, there are only 3 prizes. I think many artists don't want to enter when there are so few prizes to win. Someone might think, 'oh, I'm not good enough to pull in a 1st-3rd place win, but I can probably pull in a prize in one of these lesser categories...' I think the lack of lesser prizes scares off the....*cough*lesser artists. >.>; ...and the better artists just don't like the odds.

Welp, that's my brutaly honest opinion on what already is. whee ;;; What's to come? Personally, I would cancel. Pay each artist that entered a nice chunk of change (the participation prize?), and shut 'er down. Or if you're really wanting to try to breathe life into her agian, re-open it in a brand new thread, change the thread title to something more attention grabbing and keep your Feb 15th date. "500k OC art contest ONE MONTH ONLY!!"

I'd stop the contest, and give the participants a certain amount of gold for participating.

There have been lots of failed contests I've heard of lately, and I was thinking of setting up a contest too

Now I'm wondering if that's a good idea or not.

Thank you! Advertising is, admittedly, a weak spot of mine. When the contest started I PMed invitations to everyone who entered my first three contests [A lot of people, hahah], and a lot of them PMed me back expressing their interest... but... hmm.
I dunno. I did link exchanges when I could and included links in all my other R&C threads, but advertising is, admittedly, always a weak spot for me.

I've been noticing contests declining slightly as well. I mean, my first contest had the DTail so obviously was pretty fab, though honestly I think my third went better than my second.

Perhaps, yes, perhaps. I hadn't intended for it to be a massively long thing, but I also really didn't want to cut it too short.

There was to be more prizes added as more entries came in, but every contest I've held before always took on a "quality over quantity" approach to the entries, and there's always been.. well, frankly too many prizes compared to the number of entries the contest receives.
Which is why, this time around, I was just going to add more as the contest continued. I did mark that down, but, hmm.

Hmm.

I love holding contests. I dunno what it is about it, I just like maintaining the thread and setting up the posts and everything... but, hmm. Two entries seems a little extreme on the side of...

Well. You know.
I hate to complain, but really. Two.

Well, maybe you just had, I don't know, bad luck...? My last contest had half year timeframe, only 250k for prizes, and ended with 86 entries, most of them really fabulous...just look:

I felt guilty for having only that much gold for prizes >.>...
