When you think of "enjoying music," you think of listening to it in your headphones. You don't think of singing with your friends and family, because you're convinced that you suck and would rather listen to a "professional" - EVERYBODY can make music but we've been dumbed down by the record companies to think we can only enjoy it if we BUY it. Sorry, but it's not an individual choice you've made. It's that we've been bred by a century of the entertainment business to be musically self-conscious - insecure.

Great. Just ******** great. As if being sick since Wednesday wasn't bad enough, now I'm the ONLY one in the family with a valid driver's license! This is ********. Both parents have suspended licenses now and I get to be their personal chauffeur. Let's not mention the fact that my head is so stuffed up with crap that I can't even walk straight. This is just PERFECT!

This is one of my biggest pet-peeves ever. I HATE when people say "no, I don't sing, I suck" - especially when I'm driving somewhere with a carload of people and everyone else is singing except for the one naysayer. *shrug* My rule of thumb is that if you like a song, you'd better be freaking singing along. In my car, EVERYBODY sings. And my favorite thing when I'm hanging out with my friends in their house is when the boys will grab their guitars and start randomly jamming and telling us to make up songs on the spot. It's amazing.

I'd like to learn to play the xylophone, I quit when I thought it was stupid to play an instrument that weighed so much. xp

I feel I know random Mario tracks so well it'd be fun to try banging them out instead of scat-singing them. xd

Gah, why do I have to be so insecure.

Somebody make me confident. Just once I'd like to have a date to one of these stupid family get togethers.

Yes! It's so much more fun when people can loosen up and not be afraid of making fools of themselves. If you can hold a pitch, you CAN sing. Can you sing well is different question, but unless you're auditioning, the ONLY thing you'll be judged on is your ability to have fun. Maybe I'm biased, but I think being able to sing and clap and participate with other people in music is just a part of being a well-rounded person.

Music is a natural ability and right that everyone should be able to enjoy for free. Too many people are letting that be taken away from them.

A lot of things are slowly being taken away from us, really. Soon we'll be paying for the air we breathe.

I would hate to live in a world where people were not self conscious at all though.
It would be so... terrible.
Think of all the people that don't kill because they're afraid of not being able to cover their tracks!
Heh.

The list goes on. XD

Insecurities can be quite beneficial to being compassionate.
Or being an a*****e.
I don't think that's something you can change about a person though.
At least people can get over their insecurities.
I know very few people who have gotten over themselves.

There's a very thin line between being self conscious and being narcissistic.

Oh god. I had a Gaia-related dream. <_<;

I've noticed that the main forum pages refresh, or pseudo-refresh (the icon blinks in a tab like it refreshed but the whole page doesn't change) when an ad changes, at least that's what I'm guessing because I don't have may of Gaia's ads not adblocked -- well anyway, I had a brief dream where I remember I had left a Gaia game or forum open and came back to my computer after a few hours and I was banned. I asked why and found out it was for "auto refreshing" because of the refresh script, but it was a temp ban or something.

.. I don't remember anything after that. Wtf though. xd Why would I dream about Gaia? Maybe it was one of the last things I did before going to bed.

Aivi: You wouldn't catch me singing. I'm vocally tone deaf. As I've found out from playing RockBand. sweatdrop
I mean the doesn't mean I don't try to sing, I can probably manage singing Nirvana, but that's about it.

Even though I'm almost always listening to my nano, I think of it as an accessory rather then music, even though I'm listen to music or podcasts.

I personally think of a verity of things with music, not just one thing.
But the first thing that comes to mind would probably be an orchestra.
That's just me, it's all a point of view. You can ask the same question to 12 different people and more then likely every answer would be different. neutral

Even though I suck at playing RockBand I love playing it because it's fun.
And even though I'm not that great in marksmanship, I enjoy shooting firearms because I find it fun.

Having fun is more important then being good at something, for me at least.

An excessive amount of anything is unhealthy. By that saying, an excessive lack of anything is also unhealthy. Being self-conscious where it matters isn't a bad thing; but if you can't even sing happy birthday to a friend because you're so afraid of your own voice...

I truly think some of people's flaws go beyond the individual, and are deeply rooted in something larger. When somebody kills someone, our first response is, "That person was messed up and had a bad life." It's an isolated incident where someone wasn't in their right mind; we credit the person. We don't think to examine the society that bred this person - the society we're all living in now.

So goes my belief about being too self-conscious to sing along with others. I don't think it's just the person's fault for having that personality trait. I think it has a lot to do with society's glorification of professional artists, and the industry trying to make a profit. They wouldn't make any money if we consumers all thought we could make music ourselves - so we have to be kept in line, subtly.

Of course, I'm not trying to throw blanket terms and scenarios over everybody. Nothing is ever black or white.

I also think what Urby said about self-consciousness and narcissism is wise and true.

@Aeo - I tend to have more fun when I'm good at something. I wish I were more shameless. x]

But I've been trying to shed all the invisible eyes off my back lately, so... here's hoping.

...someone care to tell me why the ******** Gaia has RICKI LAKE in the Cinemas? Y'know, I totally won't be surprised if they show vintage Jerry Springer next.

I'm just thankful they're not showing The View. rofl I couldn't even sit through five minutes of that show due to Barbara Walters' grating voice.
