Kaleb blushed brighter, muttering timidly, "I-I r-really didn't do much, Keme was the one who handled the situation." He awkwardly picked at one sleeve of his jacket. He knew his magic was strong, but he had always doubted his strength of will and ability to be brave. That was probably to be expected considering how nervous he always was. "I-I don't know if anything permanent would be the best option anyway," he said after a bit of fidgeting.

Again Relm waved his humble airs aside. "Look, I love Keme..." She blushed furiously, saying it aloud like that even as she continued on. "But he used his size & acted out of brotherly protection. What reason did you have? What strengths would have backed you? I'd say a sense of justice, of right & wrong. I doubt you would have used magic on the lout." The pictomancer grinned crookedly, knowing that is what she would have likely done.
Then she shrugged. "It's really up to you, Scholar. I don't want to force you to try something you don't want to." Not right now anyway. Relm surprised herself. Normally she liked tricking people into doing things her way, even if it was sometimes for their own good. It's just that I don't know enough if this is the right way for the Scholar... Not at all like getting Grampa Strago to go fight the Hideon. She told herself. "But you're going to need to find a way to deal with it. Especially if you're hanging out with the Turks." She shivered, recalling the dark painting. "I'm not saying I know anything... certainly nothing clear-cut, no details... but..."
Her gaze started pointed then faded to concern. "Your friends... we don't want you to get hurt, Scholar. It's best to be prepared for a battle when possible. With a ...condition like yours... well, it could be very dangerous. And not just to you."

Kaleb shook his head, he wouldn't have used magic unless something turned violent. As it was there had been no physical harm to protect Miranda from, so he had done the best he could to take her out of the way of emotional harm. He still didn't feel like he had done much though.
Relm's last words made him wince. He wasn't so concerned about his own safety, but he always worried that his weakness would keep him from healing others. There was no point to his studies if his magic couldn't help when it was most needed. He frowned, once again reminded of how badly he needed to be strong, so he could protect those who needed to be protected.
The little mage almost growled with frustration. "I don't want to be so weak, but I don't know how to fix it. The physiological reaction of it all is too complex, and the neurological pathways are important in so much more than just the parasympathetic reflexes that result in fainting. I can't mess with that stuff without running the risk of causing worse problems, not at the level I'm at now."

Stunned at Kaleb's frustrated growl it was a simple move for Relm to fall into a dejected slump at the impossibility of finding a viable solution. For about 2.6 seconds. "Okay. You just ran a lot of big words by me that I only barely understood but I think I get the basis of your concern."
The pictomancer grinned at him. "We'll simply have to find a way that won't interfere with your neurological pathway-things. I can appreciate how permanence on a thing would be safer to try than permanence on a living being. Still, there's got to be a way!"
She said it with such energy & force that her hood slipped off her ears & fell down, surprising her. With a laugh Relm waved her brush to send the simulacrum back to the ether then stuck it in her pocket so she could use both hands to put her hood back in place.

Kaleb had also slumped a bit after his outburst, as though simply exhausted by the speed at which his emotions were shifting. That incident with Demyx on the beach had struck him too hard, he had never felt so fragile since the time he had first buried his dreams and started over. Talking about his problem seemed to force all that nearly nonexistant anger, frustration and despair to the surface, and it felt like the sheer force of those emotions would tear him apart.
As Relm smiled, he glanced back up with an expression that was a heartbreaking combination of misery and hope. "I-I'll keep looking," he said quietly, looking back down at his book.

She smiled at that & reached over to pat his knee. "Good. I will too." Relm laughed a bit. "Or at least ask the Bookworm to look in on it. I've never been one for too serious studying -probably because I've never needed to use it." She looked Kaleb up & down thoughtfully. "Maybe I'll make an exception. It'd make a nice change of pace from painting on days I can't see Keme."
A content, almost dreamy expression softened Relm's face & smile and she sighed softly. "I should probably think about getting home soon."

Kaleb smiled weakly, somewhat comforted by the touch. "If you ever wanted to borrow a book or two, I've got lots of good ones."
He glanced up at the sky, it was a shame it got dark earlier during the winter or he would have more reading time outside. "Did you have a ride home?" He asked, glancing over at Relm.

"You know, that sounds great." Even though she was not a scholar in any sense of the word, Relm appreciated that Kaleb would have the right books for her to understand. Maybe she could get the titles of ones she liked & have Myranda conjure copies for her. "And maybe you'd like to see our library sometime. I've not had much use for it, but I bet the Bookworm & his daughter wouldn't mind some scholarly company. In fact, multiple views might help see something missed before or see something in a new light."
Relm followed his gaze to the darkening sky. Immediately she felt guilty for having kept Kaleb from his studies. "A ride? No. Not really. I suppose I could call home for Timex to meet me if I get too tired. If he's not out playing somewhere with Eiraceyln. Our Ninau seem to like the weather best the colder it gets."

Kaleb's eyes widened. "Y-you have your own library?" He asked in an awed tone. If he thought about it some more he probably could have considered his own little apartment to be a library of sorts, except the books were stacked in tidy piles everywhere rather than lined up on shelves.
"I-I could walk you home if you would like," the mage offered hesitantly. He knew walking home alone in the dark could be scary, he avoided it as often as he could. "I-if I knew where you lived I could have used my portal spell, but that can be rather disorienting the first time you experience it..."

"Hmm?" Relm mused softly, having already forgotten about the library. "Oh yes. It's really Remus' refuge though it's nice for a bit of quiet between paintings on those rare times I need to cut away completely from my studio but it's too cold to go out." She tilted her head curiously at Kaleb. "It's one of the rooms the magic door goes to. I mentioned that, didn't I?"
Then her thoughts were on more interesting things. Well, momentarily more interesting to her. "Portals? Is that anything like Warp?"

"I-I don't think you said anything about it," Kaleb said timidly, he wasn't sure if Relm had ever mentioned a magic door before, let alone where it led.
He blinked when he was questioned about his portal magic. "I don't know, what is your Warp like?" It had taken him quite awhile to develop his portal spell, and the variants he was currently working on. It had been a concept on his mind since he had first seen Demyx's ability to use dark portals.

She was sure she mentioned the magic door... she had thought it would help if Kaleb saw the magic on it himself, but not being her magic she could push aside talking about it for now.
"What's Warp like?" Relm crinkled her forehead in thought. "Well, it's nothing like the wizards aparating, that's for sure. At least I don't think so. It's really not that functional, outside of dungeons. I use it sometimes to hurry out of the city. I don't know what it's like, just that it's used to take a person & their party to the entrance of a dungeon." She shrugged, not sure what else to say about it.

Kaleb listened curiously, and then smiled. "I-I think my portals are a different spell element entirely. I can open one to any place I can picture in my mind and just step through it to get there." He channeled the necessary energy and opened such a portal in front of them, which appeared as a somewhat rectangular glowing hole in the air. Unlike Demyx's black portals, this one glowed in comforting colours of white, cream, and gold.
The mage frowned at it a bit, wearing an analytical expression as he looked over his magical construct. "It's limited in several ways though. This form takes energy to maintain, and it takes more energy per time interval the farther away I need to portal to. Right now I have to be able to imagine the place clearly, but I'm working on a variant that will let me target people instead of locations, it might be more useful on the job since I won't always be needed at Rufus' office."

Relm too was looking at the magical construct of the portal with an analytical eye, her green eyes wide with excitement, awe & wonder. She of course had not seen any of the portals made by members of Organization 13, having only seen a few of them at the Halloween Party. Even then, except for the painting she jotted down of 13 figures Relm would have no idea of their connection or abilities. Of course, Relm was more interested in the practical purposes. Especially the practical purposes of a more personal interest. Like finding Keme in his wanderings.
She only flinched a little involuntarily at the mage's casual mention of Rufus' office. She would just have to get used to the fact that her friend worked for him now. "Yes. Different than warp. Different even then the wizards' aparating & disaparating. It's almost..." Relm pulled her paintbrush out to mimic the lines of power she saw in a certain section that looked familiar. "Yes... I think there are parts of this similar to how they set up the magic door. Of course that is permanent, on a permanent fixture so the magical matrix would have to be functionally altered when compared to something portable like this..." Light green eyes sparkled brightly. "This is really impressive, Scholar! I think I've been remiss, sticking mostly to my painting magics since adventuring. There's definitely something to studying, if this is the result."
Then she giggled at a wayward thought. "But if you target people... what if you come up on someone in the shower?" Relm blushed happily at the mental image that evoked, chastising herself that she really was not ready for that... that it was not even that big of a deal considering Keme usually didn't wear clothes anyway -yet tucking the thought away fondly for later as she decided she certainly must learn both the portal spell & whatever variant Kaleb came up with if possible.

Kaleb smiled brightly at the praise, but he also couldn't help but blush since he was naturally modest. "I-I had to work really hard to find the right element, this kind of spell isn't very common among mages, even at higher levels." He had maybe one book that suggested such a spell was possible, but that alone wouldn't have helped much if it weren't for the intelligence and magical knowledge backing his experimentation.
Relm's question made him blush brightly, it wasn't something he had considered. "I-I d-don't think that would be a problem," he stuttered, fidgeting in a very embarassed manner. "I-I o-only come when I get a phone call."
