Demare smiled slightly, not expecting the girl to understand. He never told her about the memories of his past, and decided that it would be better not to mention anything of it. Maybe if she asked one day, but for now, he was more content at leaving it a mystery.
"Yeah, true," he replied, leaning his head against hers a little bit. He grew silent for a long moment, shifting his hand to entwine his fingers with Mayu's. "Do... Do you think we'll always be like this...?"

"I hope so," Mayu replied, closing her eyes to really reflect on the moment. She was... thankful. She was thankful for Kimiko having called Demare over, for him even coming over to see her, for... having even met him in the first place.
And she would prefer this to any fancy restaurant or ballroom in the world.
"Do you?" she asked, glancing up at him curiously. She was curious to see if he felt the same way.

The halfling began to blush, his wings flittering for a moment. He couldn't stop smiling at the answer, but it faded for a moment when the question was returned.
He looked at her, even his black eye looking bright in the light of the moon, as if the girl were able to light up even the darkest of places. Even though they were usually blank and void of emotion, at that moment she'd be able to read his feelings very clear; that irriplacable hint of love.
"I wouldn't give you up for anything in this world or the next," he said a bit quietly, his smile returning to his lips.

Mayu blushed at his reply, giving a downcast look. Without noticing it, a single tear slid from her eye, running down her cheek and dripping onto her skirt to form a dark patch.
She let out a loud sniff, bringing her arm up to wipe at her eyes which were quickly tearing up. Finding that she couldn't stop the tears, she buried her face in her arm, turning away from Demare so that he couldn't watch her cry.

Not that it would help, as Demare definitely noticed. His smile faded once more as he gently placed his hands on her shoulders, his face now carrying a worried look. Had he said something wrong?
"Mayu, are you okay?" he asked, moving himself to kneel in front of her, moving one hand to try to get her to look up at him. "What's wrong? Why are you cry...?"

"I'm okay," she managed to get out through the sniffles, shuffing down from her seat to wrap her arms around Demare. Leaning her head against his chest, Mayu took a deep breath and released it shakily, hoping that it would help stop her tears.
"I don't want tonight to end," she let out another large sniff, wiping away the last of her tears with her hand. It was a stupid reason to cry, she would admit, but the moment was just too tearjerking not to. To think that the magic would be gone come morning, that was just too depressing to even imagine.

Demare was honestly a bit surprised, feeling his own eyes tear up a little bit as she put her arms around him. Shifting himself down so that he could sit on the ground, he held Mayu close as he closed his eyes, resting his head lightly against hers.
"I don't want it to, either," he told her, pursing his lips a little bit. Time was such a cruel thing sometimes, tricking people into thinking that it lasted forever. The halfling held her tighter, rocking her back and forth in his arms. "...As far as I'm concerned... it doesn't have to..."

Mayu dabbed at her eyes, making sure they were dry and that they would not start tearing up again as soon as she got up. She allowed herself to be rocked back and forth, finding it even a bit comforting.
"...What do you mean?" she asked, looking up at Demare. "We can't stay out here all night, can we?"
Even with the doubt in her voice, there was a small glimmer in her eye that maybe they would be able to stay out all night, evading their parents until morning. And she didn't even care about the heavy scolding that she may get from Kimiko at the moment, she just didn't want to go home. Not yet.
She wasn't quite so ready to face the heavy moods at home so far, especially after such a happy moment.

He didn't know what to say. In a way, it could work, since Neko knew he was at Mayu's and Kimi might figure Mayu was staying with him. However, if her mother called the house... There had to be a way.
Then, it occured to him.
"We could... we could search for the Haven," he realized, opening his eyes. "I could create enough light to scare any of the beasts away, and fight off the darkness."
Perhaps it was a crazy idea, especially at night. But it could work!

"The... Haven?"
Mayu blinked, looking up at him with a slight frown. But it was so dark! And even if they were to have lights, the woods was still a dangerous location...
...but she was also the one who had been crying just a few moments earlier about not wanting to go home.
"Okay, let's go," she stood up, dusting off her skirt and stretching her arms before offering a hand to the boy. A confident look remained on her face despite the warnings her mind was giving her; she knew that she would be able to get out of trouble if she was with Demare at all times.
And besides, it sounded fun.

Demare hardly knew what to say. She agreed? She wanted to stay with him and help him find it tonight? Not that he was complaining, but a part of him had figured that she would decline since it was so dark. Carefully, he stood up, dusting off his long shirt and pants.
"Really...?" he asked, just to be sure in case she wanted to change her mind. "You really want to go look for it tonight?"

"Sure," Mayu grinned, hooking an arm through Demare's. "You said we'll have lights, so it won't be so bad."
At least, that was what she was telling herself. There would also be nocturnal animals in the woods, and what if the lights couldn't scare away all of them?
Mayu bit her lip, trying not to think about them so much as she pointed a finger towards the pathway up ahead.
"Let's go!" she proclaimed boldly once again, masking over the shakiness in her voice amazingly well. She stopped for a moment, unhooking her arm, and picked up the bag of foodstuffs before linking arms once more.

The halfling still couldn't believe it. She really wanted to go... and he wasn't going to argue with her. While he was still in bad shape, he was well enough to make the journey, as well as fend off anything they needed to, but he was more worried about his limits.
"Alright," he said with a nod, smiling down at Mayu for a moment. Gradually, the orb of light came back into view, along with several others, so the children were surrounded by an array of lights. "Let's get going."
Waiting for her to pick up the bag of foodthings, he began to walk toward the path in question, a part of him frightened of what they might find. What if they ended up getting lost...? Demare had never been out this far, and it was possible to not recognize things in the dark. ...What if no one came looking for them...?
He shook his head a little bit, trying to get rid of the doubts in his mind. No... Everything would work out fine. Nothing could go wrong... or could it?

"Nice and bright~!" Mayu chirped happily, swinging the bag to and fro at her side without noticing, or caring about, the small rips that were beginning to form in the plastic.
She marched along the path, sandals slapping the back of her feet each time she lifted her leg up to stomp back down again. It wasn't so bad, with the lights surrounding them. It was almost... awe-inspiring, with the orbs around them and the glitter of stars above. Perhaps she shouldn't have been making so much noise, but... she wanted to show that she wasn't afraid of whatever might be ahead in the darkness! Even if it wasn't the real truth to her inside.
"So, what do you want to do once we get there?" the child asked in curiosity, looking over to Demare. She really hadn't a clue as to what they would do herself, other than finish off the bag of snacks.

"Hmm..." he hummed in thought, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. He hadn't really thought about that... What WOULD they do when they got to the tavern? Neko had told him that the place would be fairly empty, and probably dusty from not having been used in so long, but whatever was left behind would still be there. "I guess we could explore it a little bit, see what's there and all..."
The halfling heard a rustling in the bushes, turning his eyes toward the sound to see a red and white tipped tail disappear into the darkness. The lights were probably scaring off the nocturnal animals, realizing that nothing had really come out of hiding. This was for the best, he figured, to be on the safe side.
"Though, we probably should get some rest when we get there, too. It's been a pretty long day for us..."
