Grabbing the punk to finally see what kind of concoction he made, Jack winced a little as he set it alight, his eyes watched the flame as it licked at the incense's end, sparkling and sputtering to life before wicking out again, replaced by a small ember that burned down the stick, wafting through the air softly, like a spirit dancing with the small breeze in the building, sometimes flickering with his breath.

It was so mesmerizing, and curling his legs up under him, he closed his eyes and just breathed in the scent, his tail thumping ever so softly on the mat floor. It was nice, just sitting there, and allowing it to envelope him. Like the smoke from the burning incense, he invisioned a dragon dancing overhead, white scales shimmering in the sunlight of his mind.

It asted a lot longer than he believed, his eyes finally opening after what felt like a short while, but as he came too, he realized that there were a lot less bodies there, he took pen to paper, hoping to express what he felt in words, so that Invictus could imagine what he had felt.

((Even (6): Things seem to be good ))

LW entered cautiously yet curiously, sitting quietly as she regarded Invictus. The she-wolf had to admit she rather liked the...uhh, 'calmer' air about him. Sort of. More like she enjoyed the fact he wasn't giving them very odd lectures or snarling at them because that's just what he did. Yes, she sort of enjoyed this class. Thing. Whatever.

Once he started speaking and explaining what they were doing, LW felt a small part of her wince. Oh Jack. Hopefully all the scents in one area wouldn't give her a headache. Or make her sneeze constantly. Sensitive nose, you were a b***h at times. But the incense that Invictus lit was rather nice. Calming even. It made her think of the outdoors. And LW felt her own slight nerves at being in here ease. This wasn't so bad then. And it didn't seem like too difficult a task. Right?

....right. She should know better by now then to not have a proper wariness about things that seemed too simple.

Picking a place, LW set her incense up as instructed, carefully using the punk (teeheehee) to light it after paying the candle a visit. For a brief moment she held her breath, expecting it to backfire in some horrible fashion. But the incense lit with no problems and everything seemed to be going okay. The scent drifting up was soft and almost watery, making her think of a light drizzle of rain with a hint of...something. Sand? Wet earth? Whatever it was, it was nice.

JD snuck into the back of the class, listening to the horsemen's instructions while hiding behind one of the partitions. He'd really hoped to avoid anyone SEEING him in his ridiculous get up, but the candle was out in the open and...

Well. Whatever. He sauntered out from behind the screen, DARING anyone with a dangerous scowl to comment on the fact that he wore short skirts. He started to bend over to light his punk (while visualizing Boxers) and realized what he was doing halfway through. He knelt swiftly, glaring at the floorboards before the instrument was lit and he could shuffle away to the privacy of his own cubical-thing.

Invi had probably seen his drawers.

He slumped down angrily once in the safety of his area. Jabbing the incense into it's holder, JD carelessly lit it and sat stock still, staring at it for quite some time. Visualize? That sounded dumb. But as he watched burn down ever so painfully slowly, his mind started to drift. First, he fancied that the incense was Boxers, and his hair was on fire... But he quickly tired of that. He next imagined that it represented the pile of dresses Auri had selected from this morning to outfit him in his little number. He smiled a little as, in his mind's eye, they smoldered away. Inevitably, however, he mostly ended up contemplating the back of his eyelids.

Hours later, JD was startled awake. Wiping the drool from the corner of his mouth, he noticed the incense had FINALLY burned down, and he was free to go.

(( ignore the roll~ Missed that we don't have to roll if we did well enough the last class. :U;;; ))

Arriving back at the class the next day, Mei moved to take her seat in the class room. Curious, she waited for Invictus to explain what was to be done today. When he announced that they were to actually light their incense, Mei froze. She knew she had rushed it more towards the end, and had not let it set long enough. Today, that might cost her.

Following Invictus's instructions to set it up as he had, the doll moved to light it with the punk when others had already done so. It was the moment of truth--would the whole thing crumble and fall apart, or would it burn up in an instant? Or both? Either way, Mei was sure she was about to fail this part of the class for sure.

When lit, it burned a little faster than she had intended it to, but not so fast that it would go out right away. That was a good sign at least. The gum of arabic seemed to be holding fairly well to boot. Okay, so everything was..fine? Right? Now she was to inhale the scent, not the smoke--obviously--and attempt to visualize. Money: she had no need for, but luck and success--she definitely needed those. Mei was anything but lucky, maybe she that was what she needed to visualize on? It was worth a shot.

Taking in an unneeded breath of air, she calmly exhaled, and began to visualize. Or tried to at least.

Lucinda was a bit hesitant on lighting her incense, she had rushed on making it so anything could happen. She used the punk to light it after a moment, the tip glowed orange as smoke began to drift away from it delicately. She smiled and settled back down to a comfortable sitting position. She let the smell fill her nose, it was such a nice smell. She started to visualize herself with lots of awards for her grades, piles upon piles of tests with A+'s on them in the top right corner. Every class was easy and gave her no problems during the testing periods too.

She smiled and watched stared at the smoke for a minute, it made a beautiful design as it floated up above her. This class was really nice, better than she had expected and very relaxing this time. She let her mind get lost in the scent again and pictured all those beautiful grades with a huge smile on her face.

(( For the sake of completing this before time's up, I'm going to roll again-- hope this is OK. The first time I rolled a "9," but couldn't find a matching result for "9" on the assignment. See here for my first roll/question ))

After yesterday's disastrous class, it was with great apprehension that Ouranos touched punk to incense. Would it manage to hold? Would it burst into flame, along with any hope of passing this class he may have had? The slight wrinkle of Oura's forehead betrayed his calm appearance. In fact, this may be the most agitated anyone had seen the boil in a long, long while. The terrors of incense!

His breath escaped slowly as the stick began to smoulder, and smoke. Ouranos slumped back in relief, his body clearly expressing what his face did not.

Now that the worst was over, the boil gently placed the incense upon its stand. Smoke coiled into the air, tendril upon tendril; Oura leaned forwards, eyelids closing unconsciously. There was the bay, strong and sharp; the soft tones of sandalwood followed, melting into the rich, warm musk of myrrh. Ouranos took the scents in, slowly, comfortably. As it had during class, his mind gradually emptied, his body floating away on the sea of consciousness.

This was the state he entered when crafting dreams. Ouranos breathed, and thought of sleep. Visions of darkness, of never-ending tunnels filled his mind; he thought of screams, of unsaid fears, of night terrors. He thought of the deepest secrets locked away within human hearts. This was his purpose. To bring darkness to sleep. To bring secrets to light. Ouranos wished for success in mastering the most subconscious of horrors-- nightmares.

Slowly, he opened his eyes; the classroom, smoky and still, materialized once more. The ghost of a smile touched his lips.

((Link to Cat's homework for the first day that I missed. Thanks for letting her make it up!))

Catriona blinked as she walked into the classroom, taking a seat near a corner so she could watch most everyone in the class. She did as instructed, setting up her incense just like the instructor's.

It seemed their only task today would be to....light their incense. She sighed a little, but made her way to the front of the class. Green eyes surveyed everything they could land on as her heels clicked and her dress swished delicately around her legs. She lit her punk and took it back to her seat, blowing on it to make sure it would stay orange. Once back in her seat, she glanced around, blinking a little as there was at least one person who lit a fire instead of their incense. Carefully, so as not to make the same mistake, Catriona lit her incense and watched it. It seemed to burn far quicker than others, so she closed her eyes and visualized herself as a very wealthy, successful demon. She smiled at the vision, but as the scent left her nose, she opened her eyes to see that her incense was already gone.

The next day, returning after her second attempt at the dance training, Levi came back to see a somewhat different room. This time, they'd be sitting in seclude spaces with their own incense- it was time to light them and see what had become of their creations.

In the heir's example lighting, she noted the particularly green scent coming from his incense and took another good whiff. It was pleasantly calming somehow; somehow it relaxed her almost instantaneously.

Levi did as Invictus instructed, setting up the punk, and then lit the ends of the sticks with the provided candle. Levi worried about blowing too hard, the things looked pretty dry. There would be ash in someone's eye if she blew too hard. Just a wisp of air escaped her lips and the tatzel enjoyed the sweet scent coming off her own incense.

Her tail began to waver but she quickly coughed and refocused herself on where she was. It would be bad if she knocked things over in here.

That day when the students came in to sit, there would be no sources of fire. He'd probably learned that giving the students fire was a horrible idea. Either that or the fact that he'd already established that he would be moving on to a secondary topic days before was coming into effect.

Still. It was likely no fire was because of how many fires people had started last time.

Never the less, the mats were set up as they had been the first day of class and as the students entered the class, Invictus passed around a box filled with variously shaped metal charms.

"Take one which you think suits your fancy, and then pass it on." he instructed carefully.

Gourd shaped, Peach shaped, Fish Shaped, Lock shaped, and then there was one that was simply shaped like a round coin of sorts, but the surface was decorated in various symbols. Some of the students would be able to read the symbols in the surfaces of their charms, others would have to wait for Invictus's explanation of each one of them.

He, in turn, picked up each of the charms to given a brief explanation of what it was they did.

First he held up the charm that looked like an Chinese coin, turning it over in his hand a few times. "An Auspicious Charm. These are said to give luck in the face of an oncoming trial. In human culture, they were used to give luck to family members who were about to undergo imperial examination. To pass would bring great posterity to their family - extended family. And thus, the family would acquire a charm to give to them. Their success was all of their success."

Luck, Fortune.

The next charm he held up seemed to almost be self explanatory, as it was shaped like a lock. Never the less, he explained it anyways: "The Lock Charm had several purposes, but the most obvious one was to protect valuables from left. However, they are often put on children as well - to both give them protection by locking them to 'life', but also to protect them from evil, and bring good luck, fortune, promotion to a good livelihood, and long life."

Life, Security.

The next charm he explained was the fish shaped one - and it didn't mean that wearing it would turn you into a fish, as some people might have been snickering about in their heads. "The Fish Charm is one of the longest held symbols. The fish itself is a symbol for plenty - children, life, monetary gain, good luck. To wear a fish charm means you are wishing for more. It is also symbolic of a tale where if a carp worked hard enough to jump over the 'Dragon's Gate', it too would become a dragon."

Hard Work, Gain.

Next was the peach shaped charm. "The Peach Charm is said to protect people from bad spirits, but also bless people with longevity. To live long and fulfilling lives." It was a simple charm in that sense.

Long Life, Protection from Evil.

And then, at last he held up the last charm he had supplied the group with: "The Gourd Charm is connected to health and food, as well as protection from disease. The gourd itself - the actual plant - has been said to have many roperties which can prevent smallpox, keep people from drowning, hold life, food, medicine, play music, as well as it's very shape - that like an 8 - is said to be extremely good luck." There was a small pause before he added, "It is also a symbol to use if you want to have a lot of children." He might have added that for humor.

Health, Prosperity.

With that, he seemed to be done with his small explanation. "For today that is all. Reflect on the charm you took from me and perhaps take some time to consider what it could mean for you.

If you've decided you'd rather have a different charm, well...." he said nothing. "You will have to give me back the one you took and then I will offer you something tomorrow."

Sounded a bit like a gamble. Never the less....

"Also, for those of you who set things on Fire yesterday, I have an extra task." he suddenly announced, which probably couldn't have been good, his expression firm. Perhaps they should have been... worried?

Maybe.

The Mechanics

Randomize a number between 1-5. This is the charm your student took from the box!

The Charms

1. Gourd
2. Peach Charm
3.Auspicious
4. Lock
5. Fish

Take your time and if you think your student would rather have a different charm, take the time to swap with Invi. However, doing such might be a gamble as you never know what he'll bring with him the next day...

Fire-Starters Anonymous

ICLY after the rest of the students have gone, those who rolled a 1, 10, or simply chose to set something on fire the day before OOCly, Invictus summons those who seemed to either have a hard time or simply felt like being rebellious to sit with him...

It seemed he was going to make them sit with him.

In disapproving silence.

For twenty minutes.

While he just stared at them.

They might have seen their lives flash before their eyes.

What to do!

I'm serious about Invictus giving people the death stare in silence for twenty minutes.

Roll one 4 sided dice if you decide to do this 'make up' prompt. Times that by 5 and that is how long your student put up with the leer of death before being unnerved and fleeing.

Doing this prompt might gain you a special bonus in tomorrow's class based on effort on top of the points for today's class.

Only quote me today if you are either doing the set-stuff-on-fire make up, or if you're turning in your charm to test your luck. If you have a question you can quote me in the thread or PM me as I will give you an answer more promptly that way.

((Serafina would have given this back to Invictus, but as I wasn't able to get to this in within a proper time, I'll just keep it! :3))

Alright, picking a charm.

When she was handed the charms, she figured this couldn't be so hard. She liked charms. Charms were things she enjoyed, partially for their way to entice others and partially for their ways to make her better. It was a fairly simple desire, she supposed, and in the basket she went, withdrawing a charm easily.

... Gourd?

Serafina quirked a brow, even as she passed the object off. A gourd charm? Really? It didn't really look that interesting or exciting. It was just a plant, as Invictus said.

Still, some said not to judge a book by its cover ... though Serafina was one who did not particularly know that well, always the one to doll up the cover and make sure it looked absolutely and utterly perfect. If she didn't look perfect, after all, there would be no way to really nullify the lack of beauty that surgical mask caused... With a small huff, she pulled at it, before letting it simply snap back into place as it always did, as it always would.

Still.

She smiled under the surgical mask, looking down at the gourd. Maybe this would be useful to hold on to. Would there be benefits to it? She wasn't sure. Serafina was definitely inclined to hand the thing back--there had to be something better within his pile of stuff, right?--surely, there was--but no, this was what her hand had granted her, and perhaps, like the streamers, it would end up working out. Though the streamers hadn't really worked out the first time...

Okay, she'd ignore that part. It was unimportant.

Serafina pulled at her collar, deciding, once and for all, to hold the gourd charm close to her chest. Alright. She could do this.

Auri sat and listened to Invictus' explanations of the charms. Wealth, luck, and power, these all seemed incredibly appealing to her.

As the charm box came around to her she closed her eyed and lowered her fingers to a charm. She was going to pick this one, no that one! She hesitated and decided to go with her second choice.

"A gourd..?" she said disheartened.

"This isn't what I wanted! I don't need kids! How is this supposed to help me get rich?

There had to be some kind of mistake. Auri took her charm up to Invictus.

"I second guessed myself when I chose, I dont think this is for me,"
she said while keeping the thing at arms length. Auri feared that the longer she held the charm, the more likely she was going to be a housewife for eternity.

She gingerly dropped the gourd into his hand. "May I please try again?"

Auri bowed to him like she had learned from the training with the birds. As long as she didn't have to feed him a cracker things would probably turn out ok.

As Invictus described each of the charms, Xiu realized that most of them were familiar to her. The gourd was definitely a common sight for the baku--she could recall seeing some of her relatives wearing bracelets and necklaces that had gourd-shaped beads--as were the peach and the coin. The fish struck a hint of familiarity with her, but she had only had a vague knowledge of its meaning until Invictus described it. As for the lock...

The lock was not something that Xiu was familiar with at all. While she had seen plenty of jewelry, paintings, and crafts of the other four charms, the lock was a completely new symbol to her.

Perhaps that was part of the reason that, when the box came around to her, Xiu unhesitatingly picked out the lock charm before passing the box on to the next student. However, it was not only the fact that the symbol was new that appealed to her, but the meaning as well.

Life. Security. The life part may have been questionable for some students (the ones who were undead--she was still trying to figure out if the word "life" had a different meaning for them), but Xiu? Xiu thought it was perfect. The security part fit well too, and after that incident with Seeds...

...Well, having something that represented life and protection would be nice. The baku turned the charm over in the palm of her hand, examining it carefully before she curled her fingers in and around the small object. No, there wouldn't be any need to ask Invictus for an exchange--she would definitely be keeping this one.

Bongani stared hard at the fish charm he now held in his hand. He'd passed the box on absently while wondering if receiving this charm was somehow fated. Gain. Yes, there was much he wanted to gain from studying among the four clans. The story of the fish working hard to turn into a dragon resonated deeply with Bongani. He felt as if he were like that fish, struggling to try and become better, more powerful. It always seemed like there was something in his way, making it even more difficult to try and achieve his dream of becoming the best.

The witch doctor rubbed his thumb lightly along the raised edged of the charm in thought. This was exactly what he needed, just a bit of luck to help him gain what he needed. Bon wasn't afraid of hard work, but it was always nice to know you had a little luck on your side. Whether or not the charm really worked didn't matter. It was the thought that mattered the most to Bon and it gave him hope that someday he'd be able to reach his goals. It also didn't matter what this charm was going to be used for tomorrow. If it had to be returned on the end of the second day, Bon had decided to ask the horseman if he could keep, just like the charm it was suppose to be.

Lucinda looked at the charm she pulled from the box, it was the auspicious charm that was mean to bring luck in the face of a trial. She flipped it over and over in her hand as she wondered what trial she might deal with soon.
