"My pleasure." Zen assured her and opened a refridgerator. "I can cook, quite a bit of human things... The human president showed me how! I make some pasta stuff too, my people called it clongi."

A low laugh whispered in the crater. "I call myself me, don't you?" The devil boy wasn't getting his real name out of him anytime soon. "Why're you stalking me? Besides my good looks and charm."

"Good job on that account, she was rather cute wasn't she? Zensekai's a moron not to do that himself........." Atra selectively ignored the subject of what he looked like.
"hmm.... Curious? About little ol' me? Well I am more interesting than the red head pack of stiffies, that's for sure." It was almost like this devil guy was asking for trouble, and of course Aetra was very happy to supply some.

Zen began putting a pot of water on and waiting for it to boil impatiently.
"I guess I am, I just assume so because I haven't aged in...." He began to count things on his fingers and gave up. "A long time..."He had to think for a minute for a reply.
"You can see some cool stuff and it's fun to watch planets grow... other than that it's rather terrible to tell you the truth... It gets lonely and old fast..." Zen said with sarcasm. He finally realized she was wanting comfort, and tried to save his reply.

"but I'm not a common immortal either, you should ask Des... he doesn't have a castle and a job as the janitor of the universe from what I can tell."

"Atra...said you didn't want to be saved," she said. "Is that because you've lived so long that life has just become so tedious you can't stand to live it anymore? Is that the sort of thing that waits for me?"

She wrapped her arms around herself and sighed. "I never gave any thoughts to such things before. I never really knew anything about myself or my heritage. The only person I can really ask is my father and...he doesn't really seem to like me much."

"Atra thinks he knows everything about me, but he doesn't." Zen smiled reassuringly.
"If I couldn't stand it, I'd have gone through the Gate of Avalon myself. But the other immortals and I have a promise... should one of us get into the condition you found me in, we're not supposed to waste time reviving each other when we have a universe to save. None of us would really mind dying, doesn't mean we want to............. sure as hell none of us would want to be revived and be useless like I am now, or have someone's soul sacrificed." Zen was still angry at that, but calmed himself.
" And if it's any comfort, most immortals end up dead before they get to my age anyway."
Zen was failing at sounding comforting, so he tossed a jar of pasta into the water and began mixing other stuff into a sauce pan.
"Do you like spicy?"

"Don't step on my dust bunnies." Atra commanded, leading Aku over with his voice.
"You'll be slightly disappointed I'm afraid, my body faded eons ago. I'd make myself another, but there's not a reason to since I borrow Zensekai's."

Akutenshi stepped closer to his voice curiously, trying to watch his step. "Oh? As in possession?" he mused, smirking slightly. His tail swished back and forth. "I like you already. I don't see why anyone would be afraid of you."

((Lalala...she can end up somewhere interesting or Zen can catch up and smack some sense into her. Whatever you want.

"If that's how it is, it probably would have been better if I'd been able to give Akutenshi my soul to begin with," she said. "At least you have others like you."

She looked up at him, biting her lip. "Everyone I care about--everyone who cares about me is Human. And now I'm suddenly finding out that I'll possibly be around after they've died and become dust. How am I supposed to deal with that?"

And listening to him speak, the differences between them suddenly seemed so stark. He was this incredibly old, possibly even rather wise immortal who'd seen ages and ages pass. And she was some whiny nineteen year old half-breed who'd barely seen anything.

Atra had been right that she was nursing some feeling toward Zen with which she was wholly unfamiliar--something tender and fully of longing and something she couldn't even name. And she realized now how completely stupid that was because they were too different for such a feeling to ever be returned. She put a hand over her eyes. "I'm sorry," she said abruptly.

And then she bolted for the nearest exit, pushing past two people who'd just entered without really even noticing who they were. And she kept running without looking back.
