"They can say what they want, but I'm sure most girls here would love the queen. It's just plain facts," Nan argued, though the grin was still on her face. She firmly believed that every straight girl who'd got a touch of that queen egg would have liked it very much. A green would have been a nice substitute, or so she thought, but no girl would ever deny a gold. That was just how it worked. Even if Raena hadn't exactly hoped for a gold, she had probably wanted it secretly, and Nan knew all about secrets. At the mention of Cil, she turned her attention back to the newest bronzerider. "I knooooow… Shards they are going to be the cutest thing ever." Manly bits cannot save you now, Cil!

Nandeli giggled at her new friend's words, watching the pair with increasing amusement. Poor Cil. If she had known he'd needed a hug this much she'd have given him one a long time ago! Oh, but he was stopping, and was probably going to feed the poor little thing. Good on you! "There he goes. Good for him." She nodded in agreement to Elae's words about the green, however her attention was pulled back to the hatching when eggs began cracking left, right and centre. What a hatching! This was amazing!

Though she was disappointed as several greens passed her by, she let is go as what had to happen. If she wasn't meant for them then that was how it was meant to be. Dragons always knew what they wanted. She sucked in her breath when the queen egg began to shake, watching it hatch with bated breath. This was it. The moment of truth!

-

Gamoira nearly moved to block the rushing dragon, before she realized it didn't have quite the same expression as the others. For one, his eyes weren't whirling red. For another, it looked like it was moving with a purpose. It took her less than a minute to figure out what that meant. This dragon was going for her friend. This dragon belonged to Hesendek. It took a great deal of effort for her to move aside, allowing the bronze to lay down at the feet of her friend. He had to have his day to shine. This was what he had been brought here for.

For just the slightest moment she disliked the bronze, feeling almost as though he had taken her best friend away from her. But she brushed that thought aside faster than it had appeared in her head. She would not think such things about Hesendek, or H'dek as he would be now. They were friends. They stuck together no matter what. "Very nice, H'dek," she murmured, nodding to the dragon.

Greloren watched as the African Wild Dog egg shattered, releasing a rather odd looking bronze. He smiled. He'd been right... it was a bronze... But his smile slipped when the dragonet rushed past him for one of the older boys. The weyrbrat glanced back towards the eggs. All that was left was the queen egg... and she wouldn't want him. But the boy didn't move. He'd been so sure he was going to Impress...

The fact that every single new rider was at least 3 and more like 4 or 5 Turns older than him did not register. He was weyrbred. He was supposed to be a rider... it was in his blood... The boy stood still as several of the other boys started to leave the sands. The queen wouldn't pick any of them... so the Hatching was over for them. They might as well retreat to where their feet weren't going to burn to watch the little gold hatch and Impress.

And hatch and Impress she did. The little gold didn't take very long to find Hers and then it was really over. Greloren still didn't seem to register this, looking around, sure that there was an egg SOMEWHERE that they'd all overlooked... Right? RIGHT??

Finally, it all snapped into place and the weyrbrat fled as his fostermother made her way to comfort him. She'd known he'd put too much hopes into Impressing his first time on the Sands... and while she'd hoped he would, she also knew that if he didn't, Greloren would not take it well.

But the weyrbrat fled before his fostermother arrived, seeking a hidden place far away from the Hatching Feast and the new weyrlings. A place all his own where he could cry without anyone knowing. As he left the Hatching Grounds, Night appeared over his head, circling, his eyes whirling with the mixed emotions he was getting. Strongest was from his bonded, that of despair and rejection... but almost as strong was the love coming from all the new weyrling pairs and the dragonriders who had relived their own Impressions while watching twenty young lads and lasses become dragonriders.

For a moment, a brief moment, one shining moment, it seemed the Gold was hers. Staring into the eyes of that magnificent little Gold, Reana couldn't help but reach for her. Heart speeding, she waited to hear the little girl to say her name and claim her.

The next breath's exhale brought dashed hopes like broken egg shells. It was not her that the little Gold looked for; the one she chose brought a smile to her face nonetheless. Sure she could taste her want for the Gold, but Anne got her. Annelie was one of the closet people she had to a friend, they got along very well. She was so happy for the girl, after the excitement wore of a little, she would come to say her congratulations.

Sighing a little, she stayed where she was and watched all the dragons with their new riders.

Kiera felt her heart swell at the sight of the baby Queen. Watching her Impress was like a spell. She hoped she would be able to watch, and learn, and hope. She knew she was running out of chances to Impress, but maybe even if she didn't Impress the majestic creatures, perhaps she could work somewhere where they were as well. All these pairs would grow together, and she wanted to witness it.

After all, these were things of legends. These were creatures who kept their homes safe always. Her eyes smiled, even though her smile had fallen to a look of grim determination. There was always....the other clutch.

Lynna nearly rushed to help the tiny queen free herself, but was beaten to the punch by another girl. The one the tiny queen now looked to.

Shattered to the core, her sudden disappointment turned just so fast to rage at her mother - not due to anything that had been said, but would be said, again and again, and again. Lynna steeled herself for it, her demenour becoming icy. If her mother DARED to say a word to her, she wouldn't hear a word of it. She wasn't hopeless. That greenrider hadn't lied to her! His dragon sensed in her the potential to impress! She looked to Kella and said, "There's still a clutch on the sands. We'll be riders. I promise."

It didn't strike her as a silly thing to say at all. More than ever, she wanted to overturn the curse on her family. Since in her mind it was a curse.

And as quickly as it had begun, it was over. Mador could not stop the way he visibly drooped. His hopes had been worked so high, and now he wasn't sure just what he'd do. There was no way he'd impress now unless another clutch was laid in the next turn. It was disappointing to have his hopes so high and to see them shatter before him. And there'd been so many gorgeous hatchlings...

With a reluctant sigh, the young harper turned and made his way out of the Hatching Sands. No doubt Fiari would be glad that she had him all to herself still...

~*~

Nenda wasn't quite as disappointed as some of the other Candidates were. This was the first time she'd stood, but it wouldn't be the last. She'd find her dragon eventually, no matter how many turns it took.

So that was it, only the queen egg left, and unless he had somehow changed gender in the past couple of minutes, this hatching was over for him. He wasn't upset, though he was a little disappointed, but there would be other hatchings.

He looked over, watching the little queen hatch. They weren't the most graceful of creatures, and he wondered why no one was trying to help her. She couldn't impress if she couldn't move, could she?

In any case, it appeared that she had impressed, and Dusen wished the whole lot of them the best of luck with their new hatchlings.

In the flurry of hatchlings Pendra had felt an overwhelmed observer. What a glorious clutch but none of these had been her's. She sighed sadly and looked around at the happy new pairs making there way on to the first of their weyrling lessons, how to properly feed their dragonets. "Someday I'll be one of them," she said giving an emphatic nod and joined the other disappointed candidates in exiting.

Handra's heart was beating so loud that he could swear that everyone in the Hatching Sands could hear it. He watched as greens, blues, and even one brown made their way through the candidates, some choosing quickly while others took their time to pick the one that they wanted. The number of eggs were dwindling rapidly now, and the former shepherd – perhaps not former anymore – was beginning to believe that there was no one in the clutch for him. It was okay, he told himself in what he thought sounded like a brave voice, if there wasn't one for him. He'd have more chances. He really would.

But it didn't stop his heart from leaping into his throat when a blue dragon made his way through the boys. Look at that one! He looked... like he was smiling! The smile made the corners of Handra's mouth twitch, and he couldn't help but grin back. He didn't know that dragons could smile. It was adorable. The blue's expression gave him heart, and as he stood up a little taller a voice in his head nearly made him jump.

Oh good, there you are, mine! It is so nice to find you, I am quite hungry! My name is Dievath, said the blue as he curled around Handra's legs and poked him in the chest with his nose.

"You're… you're hungry?" Handra whispered, almost unable to believe what he was hearing. Did the dragon just talk to him? Was he dreaming? His question was answered when Dievath bumped him affectionately in the chest. Yes! Hungry! The young man's expression turned from shock to complete and utter happiness and he flung his arms around his dragon's neck. His dragon. Oh this was his dragon and he was so perfect and just… just amazing! "Thank you thank you thank you," he said into Dievath's neck, before he pulled back and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. Looking up into the stands, Handra – now officially H'dra – finally found F'sey and waved merrily at the green rider.

He had done it. He was a dragonrider!

Anneellieeee

The voice that was suddenly in Anne's head made the poor girl give an audible yelp and she turned this way and that, trying to decipher who --

She looked at the baby Queen. No... this... had she really just said her name? Had she really just chosen HER, ANNELIE, a servant who spilled soup on men just to get away, who washed dishes since she was five turns-old, who never thought she could amount to anything remotely dignified, who danced when no one was watching...

Her body started to shake, and something in her just sort of went 'POP.' In a flash, she skimmed around the gaggle of other girls, pushing one or two to get onto the sands where HER baby was. Hers... she was HERS.

By the time Annelie skidded onto her knees, sand tinkering up in a small wave, and was at Yansanth's side, tears were streaming down her sticky cheeks and her hair was disheveled about about her face. With skillful hands she broke the shell around the dragonet's neck and wiped the goo from her face with her white robe. Yansanth quickly looked away from the big Queen and to her Mine, her eyes swirling with worry.

I got you ... don't be afraid now, Anne said, trying to make her voice as soothing as possible despite the sobs that were choking at her throat.

But they're so... intimidating! Aren't you scared? the small gold asked, her head cocked to one side and Annelie held it in her hands.

Anne nodded, but gave a funny smile and then quite abruptly hugged the Yansanth's head to her. Always scared... but we'll be ok. We'll find something else ... Do you like to dance? It was a silly thing to ask a dragon, Anne thought, but why not? She felt like she could let Yansanth know anything, anything at all. She found that missing half that she had never even known was lost.

Yansanth gave a sudden trill and buried her head closer into Annelie. Mine? Can be dance together?

Of course.

Two of ours just Impressed… C’ren corrected himself as the little Queen found Hers among all the Candidates. He smiled once again, pleased to be wrong for once. In this day and age, it was such a rare thing when someone pulled themselves up from the ash heap and got to the top of society. It was nice to see it actually happen. And you’ll never guess which one is was, Ceylith.

Ceylith tilted her head to one side and tried to remember all the Candidates she had Searched, the ones she had marked as having potential. Well… there was the merchant girl? I think? Something like that…

Not her. Not this time around. But she has time.

Then who…? she gave it some more thought for a while longer before sighing. I give up. Who is it, C’ren? And who got the Queen? Judging by the cheers in there, the little Queen just Impressed.

Annelie. You found her, didn’t you? She had just been serving dinner or something when you pointed her out. And you were right. She’s the newest Goldrider. He paused for a moment before his natural pessimism and bitterness took over. Too bad it’s human nature to abuse that kind of power. She had started in the lowest part of the Weyr and was now at the top. Sooner or later, however, C’ren was certain she would begin to act like all the others in that position. Like those who had been BORN into that sort of position, anyway, the corrupted Lord Holders and others like them. Sooner or later…

Well, it was time for the feast. In other words, it was time for C’ren to go hide out in his weyr while Ceylith was off being social and crooning over the newly hatched babies.

Quinnel watched the young gold, a vaguely confused expression on her face. She had always thought that Queens were bold, proud, and sure, but this Hatchling was almost seemed – dare she say it? – scared. Not what she expected, but she supposed she shouldn’t be so quick to judge. After all, she herself was an example of one who was not as they seemed.

Tonight would be a night of celebration. Quinnel hoped that, Apprentice though she was, her talents would be called upon. However, before she joined any celebration she knew she needed to play, to vent, to release the emotions she had accumulated during this Hatching. She did not want her feelings to ruin what should be festive occasion, or to conflict with her music, should she be asked to play.

Giving a farewell bow to the mother Queen, Quinnel made to exit the cavern and return to her sleeping quarters so that she could pick up her pipes.

Leikkun
The blue dragonet glanced around as Hanumanth Impressed as if affronted. He'd not even chosen His yet! But that was all right, he knew His was among the boys here... just had to find him.

His pace sped up marginally, but he didn't look over all the boys. No, he knew which one of these he wanted as soon as he looked at him. With an excited squawk he sat before Terroll, looking up at him lovingly.

Terrollmine, I am quite hungry. Could you feed Kuulath? he asked petulantly.

((>>;; ::edits: smile )

Terroll's eyes locked on the first blue that had hatched. Such a lovely shade of Harper Blue, he felt himself remarking. But then the Bronze had hatched, distracting the young man's attention. Then, a sneaking little voice pulled his eyes back to the blue that was looking up at him with expectation.

With a cry of joy that could have easily come from the throat of a girl, Terroll dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms about hte neck of the Hatchling. "He says his name is Kuulath!" He'd always thought that the tradition of a candidate shouting the name of his dragon was rather silly, but know he knew why it was important - no one else had heard the rumbly little voice but him!

Patiently, Florian waited for the Impression of the Queen before exiting the Sands. He was not necessarily disappointed, though even he could admit to the twinge of envy that struck him as he watched the loves truck expression on the faces of new and old riders alike, he was instead in a state of readiness. There would be no more Hatchings, no more weeks of waiting and agonizing over what would Hatch, and would he become a Dragonrider. His life was his own know, in a way that he hadn't realized it could be.

He was free.

Though his physical body lacked wings to soar the skies, he felt both his heart and his mind clear from a dense fog of indecision and uncertainty. Now he could return to the Healer Hall without reservation, study for the rest of his Journeyman years, and perhaps return here as something more then he had been. A craftmaster, uniquely prepared and willing to treat even the most gruesome of dragon wounds simply because he could. The works uncovered at Landing had revealed a great deal of lost knowledge, and he hoped to find amongst the strangely preserved records some form of history into Dragonkind. Some long forgotten teaching hide that told their story, from the inside out, and gave the Healercraft new insights into Healing and preserving the great beasts of legends that defended the planet. So he left the Sands, not with his head bent low in defeat, but with a strong step and a uplifted chin. He knew his true purpose now, and he was ready.

Ghilani, now Gh'lan, had fed Khunoth only the choicest bits of wherry leg, and had managed to persuade the brown hatchling to follow him back to the Sands to await his friend and former roommate. Naturally, Khunoth had resisted, but Gh'lan could not shake the feeling that he was needed, so he went anyway... certain that Khunoth would follow and that Florian would be waiting.

Florian was not waiting, but Gh'lan and his brown did manage to reach the entrance before he did, and the younger lad's voice pulled him out of his revelry with a laugh when the Healer almost walked right past them. "Here I thought I'd either have to convince you that Impression was real, or console you in misery.... but my friend... you look better then I have ever seen!" He meant it of course, as he meant everything he said, and Florian could only smile at him. Khunoth took that pause to rumble deep in his belly and nudge his new rider's hand, earning a gentle grin from Gh'lan and a chuckle from Florian.

"Best run back and finish feeding him Ghil... err Gh'lan. And rest assured, you have not seen nor heard the last from me, and I expect your first long trip between together will be to visit me while I study at the Fort Healer Hall!" Florian said, bending to one knee to salute the little brown. "And you look after each other." He added, rising back to his full height.

Khunoth quirked his head curiously to the side, but he sensed the link between his rider and this young man, so he kept any sarcastic remarks to himself. Despite appearances, he did love his rider, and anyone important to Gh'lan would forever be important to Khunoth. Gh'lan noticed his brown's restraint, and his smile broadened as he started to turn away. "Alright then! We'll be seeing you soon, since I'm sure both Khunoth and I will be the first to fly!" He said, waving to Florian as the Healer journeyman flagged down a departing bluerider to take him back to his room to pack up before heading back to the Healer Hall.

I'll hold you to that ridermine. Be prepared. Khunoth added later, once his belly was finally full and he thought he might possibly be satisfied.

Maranan watched and felt elated when they looked his way, or got out of the way if they lumbered past him. They all were gone and he felt weak and sick. He dropped to his knees once he left the sands and cried. He had no idea why he was crying, but it just felt right. Neither him nor his friend Dusen had impressed, but he was happy for Kallista. She now had a dragon to care for. Once he was spent he got up and went back to the barracks. "One more time. I can do this one more time..."
