More often than not, the reasoning behind that is for an evolution glitch. Since the GTS doesn't actually make sure that a certain pokemon was traded, only that a trade happened.
Because of this, you can do something like... put a kadabra on offer (For something impossible, so you can keep your pokemon. Level one gyrados, crap like that.) And then browse the GTS. Make a trade, then pull your kadabra.
When you pull it from the GTS, it should evolve. Not sure if this works on HG/SS, but it does in Platinum at least.
