The "bulb" is called the esca that lights up by bioluminescence, an ability that is found in fireflies, glow worms, some other insects and some fungi, but usually reserved for deep sea organisms as a way of attracting their prey.
And yeah, only females have it because the males are actually a fraction of their size.
They leech on to the female and are only considered sperm pockets for their entire life.
Once they are "used up", they begin to dissolve into the female's body.
Quite saaad.

I bought "The Deep" a few weeks ago because I'm absolutely in love with deep sea creatures.
This is actually my favorite animal... ever.

Only after being up all night do I realize it's probably just generally referred to as a "lure".
I like the octopus though.

The whole structure is called a lure... dorsal fin and esca.
I think.
The caption in my book for that octopus is "... What are they doing there, sitting so quietly in the dark? Nobody knows."

I like the dragonfish. Draw a monocle and top hat on it, and it's perfect. You can imagine it singing opera, or just shaking it's feelers towards the sky in defiance. The ******** thing is awesome.
