"Good," Earendil said proudly. "She always used to love playing with you, when you were a baby, too."

"And me!" Amalirahc put in. He had heard many stories of his 'auntie' Haldia, and how she was his father's best friend since childhood. He didn't want to be left out of anything.

Earendil smiled. "Just playing. In the snow, the playroom ... with blocks ... and you loved when we went flying with her on her roc. Neither of you could really understand each other, she didn't know our language then and you couldn't speak yet, but you still had lots of fun."

Earendil chuckled. "It would probably be best," he nodded. "She always had trouble learning our language, and after this much time without using it, I doubt she would remember enough to make herself understood. So yes, if you want to be able to talk to her, you'll probably have to learn it."

He paused. "Amalirahc could help with that," he added with a grin. "He's known it all his life."

Amalirahc blushed, his dark skin tingeing pink, visible because his skin wasn't as dark as his father's. "Well, it's what Mama and Ada speak to me in most of the time, so that's how I know it," he murmured, slightly embarrassed.

Leyenda laughed and ruffled her son's hair. "Silly," she grinned. "Don't get all flustered about it."

Amalirahc blinked at Miyuki. "It's only four," he pointed out. "You know more than I do! You know Common Elvish like me, and Common Tongue, like me, and High Elven, like me, and then you know some language from your own world too!"

So he had miscounted, the point was still there. She knew just as many languages as him.

"Well, then you just have to practice," Amalirahc said practically. "Your mama and ada know High Elven, I bet they could help you with that, and I don't know what the other language is that you know but if someone else knows it they can help you with that, too. Like your mama, I bet!"

To him it was simple - if you needed help, you asked for it. You want to improve, you practice.

Earendil put one hand gently on Miyuki's arm to calm her. She might be closer to Amalirahc's height now that she had grown, but mentally she was older than him. He was just trying to help the best way he knew how.

"It doesn't need to be in lessons," he told her softly. "Simply speaking in a language you want to improve on rather than one you know better would be enough. But no one is forcing anything, all right?"

He squeezed her hand and smiled at her reassuringly.

Earendil smiled and squeezed Miyuki's hand tightly.

"It is said that the best way to learn a language is to teach it to someone," he told her. "Perhaps you and I could learn together, with your mother as our teacher. Then we could speak it as well. What do you think about that?"

For him, it would be useless for the most part, but it would give him and his family another special bond, and for the sake of that alone it would be more than worth it.
