All this chair stuff is foreign to me. In my band generally the BD just assigns you parts (1st, 2nd, 3rd, whatever) or she leaves it to the "section leader" to figure out. As for chairs, they don't really have too much of an impact on what part you play. I'm the generally accepted "section leader," but I don't sit in what would be the first chair spot. That's because I switch between instruments, so all I have to do if I switch to tenor is to just pull my chair and stand back a row. One of my friends is one of the best clarinet players in the upper band (the only ones who could beat her would be a couple older girls) and she's in what would be close to last chair on third clarinet, because the BD needs her there. I guess that's what it comes down to in our band, because we're smaller... where are you needed?

Just figured I'd throw in my two cents on chair tests (or lack thereof) since everyone else was talking about it. smile

Wow, our class revolves around chairs, we take a week out of band each semester to do hearings to figure out seatings, and that's when everyone freaks out and usually practices for like hours the week before and during hearings. The BD used to do that at my middle school, except we didn't even have a so-called SL, and she'd pick favorites on who to play what. Even though someone may be needed on a part, it's generally based on your skill, so we end up with more weak thirds (sorry, this is about clarinets, but I play flute too biggrin Just not during class, only in MB) than 1sts. Generally, the BD will tell the SL how to split it up, and so for the clarinets, it's 4 1sts, 4 2nds, and 7 3rds (yeah, we have 15 people), the flutes are 4 1sts and the rest are 2nds, I think 6? I don't really remember.

Usually, the flutes don't really have any trouble being heard, both parts. The director usually tells them to play softer 'cause they're too loud.

My BD doesn't have any emphasis on what chair everyone is. We're just very informal I guess

Ouch. In front of everyone? We do it where the director is blindfolded or facing the wall, and the two people enter and one plays the scales, and then it's the other's turn. Basically, you get peer pressure from the one you're challenging or being challenged by. And if I recall correctly (I don't want to challenge, don't really need to at this point, can't move up, and I would be scared), the two play a piece chosen by the challenger together, and the director uses his HECKA GOOD hearing to figure out which one sounds better. I'm serious, this guy is like almost 60, and his ears are like super sharp. Scares me.

Yeah in front of everyone! Those are the best kinds of challenges. Pressure's on. xd heart

My band revolves around chairs too. We have 7 first flutes and 8 second flutes this year. My director claims that is too many yet he brings in another flute who's not in concert band!!! scream scream scream sorry. lost the happy.
This year we have 2 first clarinets, 3 seconds, and 3 thirds, and the 1st can never be heard!

I know this is the flute guild and I kind of have a question. Is Gemeinhardt the best brand for piccolo, and if so-what types/models?
PostPosted: Wed Dec 21, 2005 4:32 pm

I don't know anything about Piccolos...but I know that our 1st chair flute- who also is the first chair in State and IMEA has a Selmer. :/ I don't know if that helps though...

Sorry, I don't play piccolo either so I wouldn't know sweatdrop

I'm the first chair flute in my band, which makes me happy, but my section is out for each others throats. *sigh* So much conflict.

I believe that the flute section always contains the most drama. Guess it's just a curse but it's everywhere.

That's definately true in our band. Everyone in our section either hates each other or are friends with 1 or 2 out of 18.
