Great Tattooist Oni So Keys, since you're obviously an art student, when are we gonna see your arts? surprised Maybe when I learn to actually finish a piece? sweatdrop I'll photograph some eventually. I don't know how well that will turn out because I mostly work in pencil this semester and I have serious value issues. Also I've been sort of working on technique over art. If I have time to take watercolor again next term, I've actually got some ideas for real pieces. (The one I really want to do in particular I planned on using several techniques that are sort of messy... not stuff I want to do inside my house.) Last term I did put a few up about midway through: http://www.fukushuu.org/art/basket.jpghttp://www.fukushuu.org/art/bubbles.jpghttp://www.fukushuu.org/art/frog1.jpg (this one was heavily photo referenced) ...and of course I've been experimenting with markers, no references and cartoon style in my sig. I never thought of myself as an art student... more like someone who happens to take art classes.

That coloring on Katrina is really something. I look forward to seeing how her hair color ends up balancing out the rose color and what choices are made on the skin. Also, is that a tattoo that she herself has under her left breast?
I don't know how tattoo artists do it. I mean, it's one of the few areas where it's hard to undo a mess up and it's not like you can just throw away the canvas and start again. (Er, I mean, save it as a study and a learning experience... ) I sort of don't want to know the details though because I'm super duper squeamish.

TweedleKeys AzurePaleSky AG seems happy right now... that's good! Go teaching Pi! And Hila as Gadget, that's cool. heart I am happily listening to the Portal ending theme. I have no idea if it is as happyfying without having seen the game or without the images that go along with the ending credits. It's not quite as fun as just the voice by itself in the last levels of the game, but I think being set to music in part makes up for it. It is a very gentle happy melody though. Oh god I love that song, it just makes me want to play the game even more! gonk Still Alive, as sung by GLaDOS, the main "villain" of Portal

TweedleKeys That coloring on Katrina is really something. I look forward to seeing how her hair color ends up balancing out the rose color and what choices are made on the skin. Jay completely freehanded the colouring. 3nodding At the end of this last session he told me to bring the original piece back in and to really work up the colouring on her hair and skin so we can collaborate on how that last part is going to look. whee Quote: Also, is that a tattoo that she herself has under her left breast? Yes, that I designed for her.Quote: I don't know how tattoo artists do it. I mean, it's one of the few areas where it's hard to undo a mess up and it's not like you can just throw away the canvas and start again. (Er, I mean, save it as a study and a learning experience... ) I sort of don't want to know the details though because I'm super duper squeamish. Practice and experience. When I asked Jay what medium I should be doing my art in to best replicate the results you get in tattooing, he said pencil crayons (which is a relief because that's what I'd guessed based on looking at flash and we seem to be using the exact same set of pencil crayons). Once you know how to achieve the desired results with the pencil crayons, it's not hard to translate that into tattooing.
Colouring tattoos is done usually with magnum needles. Your liners use a bar with tightly grouped needles (between one and eight; it's rare to use less than a four needle bar for lining) while your shaders (for colouring) are spaced out in a row (they're seperated by the width of a razor when they're made).
Using the ink is pretty much like loading a brush, and you apply value the same way.
Does that answer your question?

My friend has been in that situation, but it seemed to work out fine.

I can see what you mean by value issues, but I still love the frog. Don't worry so much about using references, because that's what practically all intelligent professional artists do. Robert Bateman doesn't paint a lynx from memory, and I don't think he goes out there and asks one to pose for him either.
It's a bit of a different story if you want to be an illustrator, but you'll still need to reference various things for getting anatomy or lighting right. Use it and make sure you're learning from it instead of just copying it.

Does that answer your question? Are pencil crayons what we call colored pencils down in the States or are they something else? I keep imagining it being like fountain pen or something. How much does the ink spread on the skin when using a shader?

It's a bit of a different story if you want to be an illustrator, but you'll still need to reference various things for getting anatomy or lighting right. Use it and make sure you're learning from it instead of just copying it.Well I should have pointed out it was highly referenced off of a photo that I didn't take nor really had permission to use ... but since I'm not selling it or posting it to the art arena, I figure it's as good a thing to study from as any. I like to keep my contour skills up, probably to a fault on not spending enough time learning to shade or training myself to see value on the paper better. A friend of mine once told me that animals were best done live. It's kind of weird since I've been told to draw what I see and not what I think I should be seeing, but maybe that's just for beginners until they learn how to see. I'm sure Robert Bateman uses a combination of photo and experience/memory. I imagine that there's a bunch of quick studies and gestures off of the real thing in action. While I really enjoy the different styles employed by illustrators, I do think it's good to have a firm grounding in how to draw real things first. Now that I'm in the mindset, I can really appreciate the editing process that illustrators must go through, probably semi-unconsciously, to get the idea of a subject across while changing it and whatnot. I suppose it's kind of like creating a font... how far can you push it and still be readable. I've done a few straight copies of work for class and yeah, I usually learn a bunch of things that barely scratch the surface of what it took to get to the final product - both in terms of techniques and in certain attributes of the subject matter. "If I did this again, next time I would..." is an excellent way to learn.
