laurelia We don't have any guy flutes in our band, but we have 2 guys who play clarinet. They compete with each other all the time, but they're good friends. They're also good friends with me. There's a guyflute player in 8th grade in my school district and there was a guy that played clarinet...well, he still does jsut not in school band(bassoon). He's a real jerk (to put it nicely...) He switched to bells in marching band this year because he wasn't going to be clarinet section leader. He's not section leader in bells either... blaugh

Our band doesn't have any male flutists this year... we had one last year, but this year he's playing percussion. He's a LOT better at that than he was at the flute...
Whee~ I had a playing test last Thursday and got bumped from 7th chair to 3rd! =3
Anyone else have any playing tests recently?

Miangel KitoYasha We don't have any guy flutes in our band...just us girls, and most of the freshman flutes don't even play. It's depressing. =/
I have a little bit of a predicament, if anyone would be willing to help me. As some of y'all know, I just recently rejoined band this year. Well, I've certainly gotten over the "ZOMGICAN'TEVENPLAYHIGHD" thing easily enough, but the problem is my endurance. I can barely go three measures without taking a breath, and I don't even have asthma. I practice at least three or four hours a day as it is, and it just doesn't help my stamina...any tips? Thanks in advance.
My Christmas concert is December seventh. Yay! =) We don't have any guy flutes either. We used to have a couple, but they both graduated last year.
As for the endurance thing... breathing exercises and longtones. Flute is, like, the worst instrument ever for air resistance. :/ I can hold a note on my sax twice as long as on my flute. Flute takes SO much more control. >>;; So yeah, breathing exercises. We do some in our band but I can't quite explain how to do them. Ask your BD if he knows any.
Our Christmas concert is the fifteenth of December. I'm excited because the next day the steel drums class gets to go out for lunch. smile Miangel, try taking things slow or fast if you like, it really helps if you start small....you'll eventually be able to play six or more measures in one breath!!! xd

That's what band was like for me last year. I hated it. I totally bombed my auditions and got put in varsity band which SUCKS. I was originally 8th chair ((out of 12)) varsity, which shows HOW badly I bombed my audition. I personally think I should be in symphonic band because I know I'm better than a few that managed to scrape by and make it. The band directors said it wouldn't be fair if they seated us by how they KNOW we can play and therefore they seat us based on the 3 minute audition, which I think is bull. They should seat us they way they think we should be seated, then have challenges. At least, that's what I think. gakihime congrats for getting 3rd chair!!! go for first!!! Thanks! =3 I'll definately go for first. The two people in front of me were about four chairs behind me last year, so I think I'll pass em' sometime this year. 3nodding Haaa... I'm so competitive. xd

We have playing tests twice a year. When I was a freshman, I was 2nd chair. This year, as a sophomore, I'm yet again 2nd chair, but I'm treated as principal chair. Our 1st chair doubles on piccolo, so she is usually playing that. Also, most people ask me questions about their parts etc.
For our second playing test, I'm hoping to get 1st seat hands down.

LegolasGreenleaf Well, we can challenge but I think they know who is who when we test so I never bothered because the one director doesn't like me. Doesn't matter if the director likes you or not, when you challenge it's in front of the entire band, therefore they have to give you your rightful spot if you win because they'll look stupid if you clearly win and don't move you up. My director made it clear that in band you'll only be judged by your playing abilities. There was this kid he didn't get along with, but that didn't stop the kid from making 1st chair symphonic. =P

I have a question for anyone who plays an open-holed flute.
I just recently got mine today, actually, and found that it was really easy to adjust, except for the G key (3 on left hand). You see, it's an in-line G, and I have really small hands, so it's extremely hard to reach. I have the same problem reaching the gizmo key to get the 4th C out, and using a different alternate fingering isn't really working. I've tried playing the correct way with the in-line G, but it just pulls at my muscles too much.
Does anyone have any tips on how to be able to reach that key as soon as possible? I have a solo in our upcoming winter concert, and I want to have as many plugs out as possible.

We do it where the director is blindfolded or facing the wall, and the two people enter and one plays the scales, and then it's the other's turn. Basically, you get peer pressure from the one you're challenging or being challenged by. And if I recall correctly (I don't want to challenge, don't really need to at this point, can't move up, and I would be scared), the two play a piece chosen by the challenger together, and the director uses his HECKA GOOD hearing to figure out which one sounds better. I'm serious, this guy is like almost 60, and his ears are like super sharp. Scares me.
