*sigh* when are the new chapters coming out???
PostPosted: Mon Jul 30, 2007 7:55 am

I appologize to everyone for the long drought in chapters. It's all the fault of my parents. Every time I try and write the chapters on the new computer, they run me off it, saying I've been on the computer for too long, and that I'm not allowed to use it for the rest of the day. However, they don't care about me using the computer in my room, so that's where I go to type my chapters. The problem is, the phone line in my room is dead, so I can't connect the old PC to the internet. It's too old to utilize flash drive technology of any type, and the CD burner can't use rewriteables.

Essentially, the only way to move stuff off of it is on a floppy disc. There in lies the problem... the new computer cannot use Floppy discs. I used to have two methods of moving the files...

1. Use the computers at school, which I have accsess to every day. However, I can't do this right now, because it's summer break.

2. Use the computers at the public library. The problem is, I haven't been able to go to the library in a while, since I have both driving school and other obligations to deal with. Plus, it's an hour long walk to the library before I can do anything.

Thankfully for all of you, I have driving school tomorrow afternoon, and afterwards, I will be going to the library and posting episodes 12, 13, and possibly 14, if I finish it tonight. And once school's in session again, there won't be this problem anymore.

Code SPIRAL 12 - moving targets

"I'm leaving for LA. I'll be out of contact for a while. - Eyes." Read the sticky note that Kosuke found attached to his forehead when he woke up. He groaned as he stood up and stretched. He had been sleeping on the couch of Rutherford's penthouse. He yawned as he grabbed a donut from the small connected kitchen and got dressed, preparing for his first day back...

"Hey Jeremy!" Aelita rushed over to Ayumu and Jeremy at the breakfast table. "I've got bad news."
"What's wrong?" Jeremy asked.
"He's back. Kosuke's come back to the school." Aelita explained. Jeremy's jaw dropped.
"But... he..." Jeremy stutterred. Kosuke had been gone for months... he had been "studying abroad" since he left after he revealed himself as one of the blade children. For that matter... he wasn't even present at the school after the return to the past that day.
"If he's back... something's going on." Ayumu stood up. "Think about it. What would he have to gain from coming back here unless it's some kind of blade children operation?"
"Where is he now?" Jeremy asked.
"He's in the schoolyard. Come on... we'd better keep an eye on him." Aelita answered as the three of them stood up and headed for the cafeteria door.

"So... where did you go study?" Sissi asked demandingly to Kosuke. He was leaning up against the wall near the vending machine, looking extremely annoyed.
"I told you... it's none of your bussiness." He replied scathingly.
"Oh, come on..." Sissi whined at him. The three of them looked at this scene, confused.
"Did I miss something?" Jeremy asked them.
"Yeah, you did." Said Millie as she and Tamir walked up to them. "Haven't you read the gossip column this year?"
"I... don't really read the school paper..." Jeremy muttered hesitantly, fearing some reprisal from them.
"Why? What's this about?" Aelita asked them.
"You see..." Tamir replied. "Since Ulrich transferred out two years ago, Sissi hasn't had anyone to chase. But when Kosuke came here at the start of the year..."
"She went head over heels and was stalking him until he left." Millie finished. "And now that he's back..."
"It's starting all over again..." Jeremy grinned. This was too rich. Being stalked by Sissi wasn't something he'd wish on anyone... except Kosuke.
"Kouske! Why won't you talk with me?!?!" Sissi argued as she grabbed his arm.
"Because you're driving me crazy!!!" Kosuke exclaimed, breaking away from her. He tried to walk away, but she continued to follow him.
"Come on! Kosuke! Sweetie!!!" She continued as she chased after him.
"Get away from me..." Kosuke broke into a jog/run to try and lose her.
"We need a distraction..." Ayumu muttered. "Jeremy, any ideas?"
"One..." Jeremy pulled out his cell phone. "But it's gonna cost me some minutes." He dialed speed dial # 2. "Hello... Ulrich? It's me, Jeremy. I need a little favor..."

"This better be good Jeremy..." Ulrich sat up in his bed. He was currently in his home, which was in a different time zone. It was around 6:00 AM.
"I'm going to put Sissi on the line. I need you to keep her distracted for five minutes."
"Is this xana related?"
"Well... uh... no." Jeremy replied. He was met with a dial tone. Ulrich threw his phone against the wall as he plopped back into his pillow. He was grumpy in the morning.

"Well that doesn't sound like it worked, did it?" Aelita smiled at the dismayed look on Jeremy's face.
"It looks like we got lucky." Ayumu pointed across the scene. Mrs. Hertz had arrived, coming up to Sissi.
"Elizabeth, your father wants to speak with you." She said.
"Oh... fine." Sissi whined. "I'll be right back, Kosuke-darling."
"And I won't be here..." Kosuke muttered under his breath as he wore a fake grin and waved at her. As soon as Sissi was out of sight, Kosuke whipped around to make a break for it, but found himself face-to-face with Jeremy. "Oh... hey Belpois." Kosuke said casually, surprised to see him. "Damn... that girl IS a leech."
"What are you doing here, Azuzuki?" Ayumu said from behind him. The three of them had practically surrouned him.
"Somehow, I doubt you're here just to further your education." Jeremy said grimly as he adjusted his glasses."
"That's none of your concern." Kosuke said to Jeremy. "I'm just resuming my cover, now that were not at war with eachother anymore."
"And why do you need cover here?" Aelita asked him.
"Why keeping an eye on you of course! After all, the hunters are after you too." Kosuke said calmly.
"That... and I'm guessing there's also someone around here you want dead." Jeremy implied. "Who is it?"
"I didn't come to kill anyone in particular." Kosuke bounced a six-sided dice in his hand. "All thought there's a few people I wouldn't mind "taking care of" while I'm here..." Kosuke stated, implying Sissi. "In fact... I think I will..." Kosuke stood up and tried to walk away.

A few seconds later, a girl came out of nowhere and delivered a flying kick to his head, knocking him to the ground.
"You won't be causing any trouble on your first day, Kosuke, you got that?" The blonde girl Yumi had spoken of stood looming over Kosuke. Kosuke rolled over onto his back, looking up at her. A large red mark remained on his face, which he was clutching.
"Ryoko..." He whined. "Now it looks like you're the one trying to kill me!!!"
"Right... as if you'd die so easily." Ryoko replied slyly. "Now get up tough guy."
"Cheap shot... flying kick outta nowhere..." Kosuke muttered as he stood up.
"You're a man, aren't you? Now stop complaining like a baby and go get me some breakfast."
"Hold on... why should I?"
"Just go get it..." Ryoko walked around behind him. "NOW!!!" She leaped up and kneed him in the back, knocking him forward a few paces. Kosuke groaned for a few seconds, and then silently headed for the cafeteria, head bowed. The three of them watched this play out, struggling to avoid laughing. Still, they were all completely bewildered, accept Jeremy, who drew the connection that this was the girl Yumi had spoken of. "Sorry about all that. I'll put a collar on Kosuke, so you won't have to watch your backs all the time."
"Now hold on..." Ayumu stopped her. "Don't tell me you're a..."
"Sure am. I'm one of the blade children. Ryoko Takeyami." The girl replied.
"Just... how many of you are there?" Jeremy asked her.
"I've heard a lot about you three... and I'd suggest you try keeping a low profile for now."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Aelita asked her.
"It means you ought to have some fun while you still can. See ya." She waved her hand and casually walked away. After a moment, Jeremy spoke.
"So... any idea what they could be cooking up?"
"No." Aelita answered.
"All I know is... Azuzuki is completely whipped." Ayumu grinned.

"Here's your breakfast." Kosuke sat down at an abandoned breakfast table across from Ryoko.
"That's a good boy." Ryoko replied as she reached for the crossiant on her plate. "Eyes explained the situation to me... so that's Aelita Hopper."
"Yeah... pretty cute for the b*****d's daughter, huh?"
"I guess so." Ryoko munched on the bread. "And the boy with brown hair is Kiyotaka's brother as well..."
"He's not really that bad either... it's Belpois I can't stand."
"How's he involved in all this?"
"He's the one who restarted Xana. He's pretty much useless. I'd have gotten rid of him a while ago, but Aelita's totally flipped for him." Kosuke explained. Ryoko remained silent. This silence continued for a moment or two, until Kosuke spoke again. "Ryoko... I'm sorry for getting you involved in this. I know you probably won't believe me, but... I tried to stop Eyes from bringing you back. You're the last person I intended to get caught up in this." Kouske pleaded. Ryoko continued to say nothing.

"Oh... why do I have to do it?!?!?!?!" Sissi argued with her father.
"Now, now Elizabeth... where's your compassion?" Delmas stopped her. "Didn't you know this girl at all? She's been lonely and alone in her hospital room for two months. Is it really too much to ask my own daughter to visit her and cheer her up?"
"Well... yeah! Especially on the day my boyfriend finally comes back!!!" Sissi exclaimed.
"Boyfriend?" Delmas raised a speculatve eyebrow. "Who are you talking about?"
"His name is Kosuke. He just got back from studying abroad..."
"Kouske Azuzuki!?!? That delinquient is your boyfriend!?!?!" Delmas exclaimed angrilly.
"Well... sort of... you see... uh..." Sissi twiddled her thumbs nervously. Delams beat his hand on his forehead to try and calm himself down.
"Look... I'm going to pick someone to go with you. The two of you go spend a day with Rio Takeyuji at the hospital. I'll arrange for the both of you to get out of your classes."
"Oh! Can Kouske come with me?!?!" Sissi grinned pleadingly.
"No." Delmas shot her down. "I need another female... someone who's trustworthy and won't let you break off and go to the mall or something..." Delmas muttered. "Where did I go wrong..." He muttered to himself, but not loud enough for Sissi to hear. He flipped through a few windows on his computer. "Ah... Aelita Stones. You know her, right?"
"Mrs. Einstein?" Sissi muttered. "What a drag..."

Aelita was called to the principal's office as first period started. Delmas explained the situation to her, and she reluctantly agreed. He personally drove them to the hospital, and during the class switch, she called Jeremy to let him know what was going on.
"Alright... just be careful. Rio is a loose cannon."
"I don't think she'll try anything with Sissi around..." Aelita whispered to him. "Alright... I have to go. I'll talk to you later." They stopped in front of the hospital as Delmas let them out.
"Alright you two, I'll be back to pick you up around five o'clock." He said to them. They both nodded before he turned and drove back to the school. Sissi carried a small bundle of flowers which she was told to give Rio, and Aelita had nothing.
"This really sucks..." Sissi complained as they walked down the hall "Why oh why did my father have to do this on the day Kosuke came back?!?!" She whined.
"You know... somehow I get the feeling he doesn't like you." Aelita interuppted her.
"Oh... what do you know, wallflower?" Sissi yelled at her. "You don't know the first thing about love."
"I just know a stalker when I see one..." Aelita said as she shrugged.
"Just shut up." Sissi said scathingly.

Rio sat in her bed, staring out the window. Something seemed strange to her... ominous. She could feel it in her bones. She suddenedly felt something... a pressence from just outside in the hallway. As the door slid open, she ducked for cover.
"Hello?" Aelita asked to what appeared to by an empty room as she stepped inside. Sissi followed after her.
"Maybe they changed her room..."
"Oh... it's just Aelita." Rio sighed with relief as she stood up from hiding behind the bed.
"Oh, there you are." Aelita said casually. She had to maintain a friendly facade around Sissi, and she hoped Rio would take the hint and do the same.
"What were you doing under the bed? Playing hide and seek?" Sissi asked obnoxiously.
"Of course not... you can't play hide and seek with only one person..." Rio said calmly and quietly as she sat back into her bed. "It's strange..." She thought. "I could have sworn I smelled bloodlust from behind the door..." She tried to keep her senses focused on her surroundings without becoming too distracted by her visitors. "What are you two doing here, aren't you skipping class?"
"Actually, my father got us out of class so we could come visit you for a day. He didn't know any of your ACTUAL friends, so he sent us." Sissi explained. "So yeah... that's why we're here." She plopped down into one of the chairs and flipped on the TV, effectively ignoring them.
"Don't mind her... she's always a grouch like this." Aelita explained to Rio. "That, and she's been stalking Kosuke."
"Oh... right." Rio replied. They found themselves in a situation where they were unable to have a serious conversation about lyoko, Xana, or the blade children. So... they were forced to talk of other things... or at least pretend to in order to fool Sissi. About half an hour past irrelevantly. Aelita already found herself strained for topics. So she turned to one topic that in hindsight... she should have avoided.
"So Rio... is there anyone you like?" She asked. The question seemed innocent enough, and woudln't sound strange to Sissi.
"Actually, yes." Rio replied.
"Really? Who?"
"Jeremy Belpois." She said with a grin. Aelita gave her a fierce glare, but Sissi, who's eyes had begun to sag as she watched a routine episode of Jerry Springer, suddendly perked up. Her ears actually appeared to twitch as she heard this. She whipped around with surprise.
"Did I just hear that right?!?!" She exclaimed. "I can see it now... Elizabeth Delmas, ace reporter, breaks the scandal of the century to the Catic Herald! Love triangle between Aelita Stones, Rio Takeyuji, and Catic valedictorian Jeremy Belpois!!!" She exclaimed with an abnormal amount of glee. "Oh... those two are just gonna eat this up!!!" She grinned manically.
"Sissi!" Aelita cried out in protest.
"You can't tell anyone!" Rio aruged. While she was a bit more worried about the hunters and everything else going on, she still didn't want things to be further complicated if that got out.
"Oh no... everyone's gonna find out about this!!" Sissi exclaimed. She reached for the door handle. "And no one's gonna stop me!" She pulled open the door and tried to walk out, but collided with a pair of doctors. They wore the hospital uniform of white, one was male, the other female. The male had orange-ish blonde hair, the female had black hair. They both had the same hairstyle, a simple straight down cut that came down to the height of their noses. Rio suddenedly jumped. "Those aren't the regular doctors..." She exclaimed in her head, but before she could say anything, Sissi found herself knocked out by the same gas that had been used to knock Aelita out before.
"Run!" Aelita and Rio exclaimed to eachother almost simultaneously as they both tried to break past the two and out the room's one and only door. But both were quickly captured, Aelita by the female and Rio by the male. They're hands wrapped around Aelita and Rio's mouth, gagging them and preventing them from making any sound. Before they knew it, they had both been gassed as well. Aelita and Rio hit the floor at about the same time. The last thing Aelita remembered before passing out was Rio's voice. It was faint, and weak, but still audiable.
"These aren't doctors... they're hunters..."

Ten minutes later, the three were smuggled out of the hospital on stretchers, carried out to an ambulance. It seemed like security at the hospital was mysteriously lax, but all the personel in the wing made no effort to stop them. As the man slid the last stretcher into the ambulance, the silver ring with the eye of Xana on it glinted in the afternoon light. The get-away was smooth, and no one questioned the fake ambulance leaving the hospital.

Back at the school, lunch hour arrived. Jeremy sat down at his table, finding himself completely alone. He thought he would dial Aelita... but when he did, he got her voice mail. He left a message for her to call him, and then hung up. Ayumu was nowhere to be found... he had recently taken to using the lunch hour to wander. But unexpectedly, Kosuke and Ryoko arrived and sat across from them at the table.

Ayumu wandered the streets a few blocks around the academy. So long as he was back on time, no one would notice, and he munched on a bag of chips from the vending machine as he paced. The faces of Kosuke, Ryoko, Rio, and Eyes all floated in his mind.
"They're all converging... but why?" He muttered to himself. An ambulance with no sirens on passed him, but he thought nothing strange of it."

"So where's Aelita?" Ryoko asked him.
"She went to the hospital with Sissi to visit Rio, on the principal's orders."
"Yes! The witch is gone for the day!" Kosuke exclaimed. Ryoko looked concerned.
"Why do you care anyways?" Jeremy asked.
"Look... she is one of the blade children. We like to watch over her a little."
"That's something I've been wanting to ask you." Jeremy said to them both. "You keep talking about Aelita... you say she's one of the blade children. It would be a lot easier to understand if you just explained what the blade children are." Ryoko raised an eyebrow, then glanced at Kosuke, as if seeking his approval. Kosuke shook his head in response.
"Sorry... but Eyes doesn't want us to tell you yet." Ryoko said. Jeremy frowned. It was clear that Eyes was the leader... it was his orders that was keeping all the information from him. But what did they stand to gain by keeping it a secret? "When was the last time you spoke to her?"
"This morning, before she got to the hospital." Jeremy replied. "I've tried to call her, but she doesn't pick up."
"Doesn't that seem a little strange?" Ryoko said to Kosuke.
"She's probably just following the rules by turning her cell phone off in the hospital. I know that no one ever does it, but maybe she is."
"Aelita never turns her cell phone off unless she's with us. We use them to contact eachother if Xana attacks." Jeremy stopped him.
"Hey, Kosuke. Try calling Sissi." Ryoko ordered.
"What?!?! Are you out of your mind?!?! I spend all day trying to get away from that wingnut, and now you want me to call her?!?!" He exclaimed.
"Just do it. Just have the number, right?"
"Yeah... she didn't give me much choice." Kosuke pulled out his mobile. "She stole my mobile and programmed it in." He flipped through his phone book and found the number, and pressed send. The phone rang three times before being answered by a voice mail. He flipped the phone closed without leaving a message. "I got her voice mail too."
"Sissi doesn't strike me as one to EVER turn her cell phone off." Ryoko said as she sucked chocolate milk up a straw.
"Maybe one of the doctor's made them do it?" Jeremy suggested.
"I dunno... something just seems off..." Ryoko muttered. "See... we blade children kinda have a "sixth sense" about these things. It all comes with the eyes." Ryoko said as she blinked, casually flipping her golden eyes on and off."
"Don't tell him that..." Kosuke said in an annoyed tone as he put his feet up on the table. "If you're so worried, we'll head over there as soon as school ends and visit Rio, OK?"
"Alright." Ryoko replied. "You can come with us too if you want. Aelita will probably still be there."
"Alright. Ayumu and I will meet you at the hospital then." Jeremy replied.

Later that day, Ryoko and Kosuke were the first to arrive at the hospital at 3:30. They found the hospital to be strangely quiet... no doctors roamed the halls, and there was no sounds of anyone really at all. Ryoko and Kosuke noticed this... but they were sure if anything severe was going on, it would be chaotic rather than calm. Ryoko stood in front of the door to Rio's room.
"Rio! I hear you're still as short as ever!" She teased happily as she slid the door open. But no one was in the room. "That's wierd." Ryoko said with strange curiosity.
"Yeah... she's been in here her whole stay." Kosuke added.
"Did she mention... a room change... or a check-up in another part of the hospital or something?" Ryoko asked nervously.
"Both of those seem unlikely." Rang Ayumu's voice. He and Jeremy had just arrived, and stood directly behind them.
"Wha... where's Aelita?" Jeremy exclaimed as he stepped into the room. Ayumu glanced nervously out into the hall, then stepped deeper in and shut the door.
"Jeremy... scan for a tower." Ayumu ordered.
"If there was a tower, the super-scan would have found it."
"Just do it manually, okay. Xana's been tricky lately." Ayumu re-asserted.
"What's this about?" Ryoko asked.
"What did you mean about it being "unlikely"?" Kosuke asked.
"You mean you can't tell?" Ayumu stepped towards the bed. "Look." He pointed at the bed. The covers, the pillow, they had both been displaced. The fabric was ruffled, as if there had been a struggle. "Judging by the circumstances... there's a high possibility they were taken."

"So the hunters that Rutherford was talking about..." Ryoko thought.
"Finally showed up." Kosuke finished the same thought.
"So... the people who kidnapped them... are the from the same organization that tried to kill Eyes at Christmas?" Kosuke and Ryoko remained silent. "I'll take that as a yes."
"This is blade children business. Stay out of it." Kosuke stopped him.
"Take my advice. You don't want to get involved in this."
"Don't get me wrong... we'd love to sit this one out... if we could." Ayumu spoke for both Jeremy and himself. He stepped over and bent over one of the chairs pulling a pink hair off it. "But Aelita and Sissi have been taken as well... so like it or not, this is our business."
"Ayumu... you were right. Activated tower in the mountain sector!"
"We have to get out of here, now!" Ayumu exclaimed as he opened up the window.
"Wha... why?" Kosuke exclaimed.
"The reason the hunter's got away with them so easily... the hospital staff is posessed!" Ayumu exclaimed as the door was slid open. A middle-aged, heavy-set nurse stepped into the room menacingly, her eyes flashing with the mark of Xana. She groaned at them menacingly.
"Ryoko! Take the nerd and go! I'll hold her off."
"Kosuke! Don't kill her!" Ryoko exclaimed as she grabbed Jeremy by the collar.
"Grr... fine." Kosuke responded hesitantly. He drew out his knife and activated his eyes. The woman lunged at him, but Kosuke deftly dodged it and slashed at her leg to try and disable her, but it was phased through. She grabbed his leg, and before he could break free, sent a charge through his body. He cried out in pain as he was thrown against the wall. But he managed to recover with surprising speed as he scrambled out the door and down the hall. As he ran down the hall, he was surprised to encounter principal Delmas.
"You... you're that Azuzuki boy! What are you doing here?" He asked with surprise.
"Long story..." Kosuke shouted to him as he ran down the hall, stopping right in front of him. "Evil nurse... like one of those slasher films." Kosuke said, out of breath. He handed Delmas the knife. "Your problem now!" Delmas looked at him bewiledered as Kosuke ran past him down the hall.
"Now hold on one second! What is going on here?!" He exclaimed. In response several more xanafied hospital staff stepped out of assorted rooms. Many were carrying scalpels and other surgical tools. They groaned like zombies as they crept towards him. Panicked, Delmas dropped the knife and ran after Kosuke, trying to flee.

Aelita felt a sense of deja vu. As she awoke, she found her hands once again tied behind her back. This time though, she was in a completely unfamiliar place, and she was seated in a folding aluminum chair.
"So... you're awake." Said Rio, who was already alert and awake, but in the same situation. They were back to back, and Sissi was also tied to a chair next to them, but she was out cold.
"We were... kidnapped..." Aelita tried to remember what had happened, trying to overcome the effects of the gas.
"Thanks to her." Rio pointed her head towards Sissi. "If she hadn't been distracting us... I would have felt the hunters coming."
"Is she alright?" Aelita asked.
"I don't know. The knockout gas the hunters use is really strong. It has to be... since we're blade children, it doesn't last nearly as long as it does on a normal human. So while it only knocked us out... a regular human like her could wind up dead from it." Rio explained as she struggled to find a way out of the handcuffs.
"I... I think she's alive." Aelita said with some relief after watching Sissi for a few seconds and seeing faint signs of breathing. "But the fact that she's knocked out leaves us free to talk. What's going on?" Aelita asked her.
"I'd say that's obvious. We were kidnapped by hunters."
"What are... hunters?" Aelita asked. She recalled Kosuke and Ayumu using the term before.

"Hunters..." Ryoko explained to Jeremy and Ayumu as they ran. "It's a term we use for everyone who's been hostile to us and our cause. Anyone who's tried to hunt will maim or kill the blade children."
"So you collectively call ALL your enemies, the hunters." Jeremy summed up.
"So they aren't all one big organized group?" Ayumu asked.
"There are a few independent ones... like Imazato, and Xana. But the rest are all working in unison." Just then, Kosuke caught up to them.
"I'll leave the hospital staff to the police or something. They won't know what to do either, but we have other priorites." Kosuke explained.
"Kosuke, where's Rutherford?" Ryoko asked.
"He left for LA this morning."
"Damn... just when we need him."
"I won't let them be hunted..." Kosuke gritted his teeth.
"We need to rescue them before Aelita can deactivate the tower." Jeremy reinforced. "I think we should..."
"Actually..." Ayumu interuppted him. "I don't think we need Aelita to stop the attack."
"Huh?" Jeremy stumbled.
"Kosuke... can you do what you did before? Deactivate the tower by destorying it?" Ayumu asked.
"Yeah." He reponded.
"I can do it too. We all can." Ryoko added.
"But..." Jeremy tried to interrupt, but Ayumu cut them off.
"Xana can do some real damage while we're carrying out the rescue. Someone will wind up dead. Stopping those zombies is our first priority. We'll have to sacrfice the tower, but it's the only way. Besides, we don't even know where they're being held." Ayumu explained. Jeremy tried to find a counter argument that involved resucing Aelita at a higher priority, but he knew Ayumu was right.
"Fine. To the factory." The four of them continued to run.

"Somehow... this just feels really strange..." Jeremy said as he started up the process and the scanner doors opened.
"Yeah... just a month ago, we were all trying to kill eachother." Kosuke shot at him sarcastically.
"You know what... I don't even want to know what exactly went on before I got here." Ryoko scolded Kosuke.
"Just send us on our way Jeremy. Before Ryoko starts beating up on him again." Ayumu urged him.
"Happy to oblige. Transfer: Ryoko. Transfer: Kosuke. Transfer: Ayumu." The doors closed down below. "Scanner: Ryoko. Scanner: Kosuke. Scanner: Ayumu. Virtualization."

Code SPIRAL - 12 - moving targets... end.

Code SPIRAL 13 - maze of death

The three materialized in the mountain sector. Ayumu and Kosuke dropped in first, as they had already been scanned, but it took a little longer for Ryoko to materialize, as her form was loading for the first time. As she dropped to the ground, she landed with her fist on the ground, leaving behind a small crater. She wore a white karate robe, with a skin tight red shirt beneath it. A red headband was tied around her head, and she wore no shoes or socks. She appeared to be unarmed compared to the other two.
"Ryoko... looking good..." Kosuke said with a small whistle.
"You shut up." Ryoko shot him a glance.
"Jeremy, you got vehicles?" Ayumu asked him.
"Coming up." Jeremy keyed a sequence and materialized the three vehicles. Ayumu leaped onto the overbike, mounting his halberd on the front, like a jousting lance. Kosuke leaped onto the overboard, and Ryoko on the overwing.
"The tower is south of your location. Just keep going straight on your current path." Jeremy instructed them. "I've also got a swarm of monsters on my radar. Hope you guy's can handle it."
"No sweat." Kosuke replied, zooming off ahead of them towards a swarm of six hornets hovering above. Ryoko and Ayumu rode side by side. A krab, two tarantuals, and a megatank rolled on the path in front of them.
"I've got the krab." Ryoko told him.
"Then I'll take the tank. Then we'll split the rest." Ayumu cut his direction to one side to avoid the megatank's first eliptical blast. Ryoko spiraled off in the opposite direction, heading higher up in the air. Meanwhile, Kosuke hurled his first flurry of knives into the swarm of hornets, destroying one. As he dug into his bottomless pouch for more knives, he did a number of complex manuevers to avoid the lasers.

Ayumu ducked low against the bike to get more aerodynamic, as he aimed his lance for the weak spot of the megatank. It saw him coming, and then quickly withdrew into it's shell. Ayumu struck the metal side of the tank, the angle and force sent it spinning out of control on it's axis. Ayumu, seeing that his attack had missed, turned around and dismounted the lance from the bike, aiming it at the ground. He stabbed it into the ground, tightly gripping it while he gripped the bike tightly between his legs. The momentum of the bike sent him flying up, and he released the bike the exactly the right moment to send it carreening into the megatank, sending both the tank and the bike into the digital sea. Ayumu pulled the spear out of the ground and used it to deflect a shot from one of the tarantulas, but was hit by a shot from the other. Meanwhile, as one of the hornets, flying lower than the others, buzzed by the overwing, Ryoko swung her fist and managed to connect with it. As her fist struck the Xana mark, the hornet exploded as if it had been struck with a weapon. Kosuke hurled another knife and took out a third hornet. Ryoko glanced down beneath her to aim, and then leaped from the overwing, heading for the ground, head first. She landed on top of the krab, rolling slightly and pounding her fist into it's Xana mark. She rolled off the krab's head and onto the pathway. As the tarantula's continued to fire on them both, Ayumu continued to deflect shots off his spear as Ryoko acrobatically dodged them. Above, Kosuke had destroyed a 4th hornet, and was taking aim at the fifth. Unfortunately, one of the hornet's struck his overboard which dissapeared out from under him just as he flung his knife, destorying the 5th hornet. He found himself plummeting towards the digital sea.
"Kosuke!" Jeremy exclaimed. There wasn't enough time to bring him in. Kosuke, with his last fleeting thought, plunged his hand into the pouch, and drew out another knife, which he thrust into his chest. He devirtualized just before he hit the sea. Jeremy let out a sigh of relief. Meanwhile, Ayumu hurled his spear straight up into the air, impaling and destorying the final hornet. But he was now un-armed, and the tarantula took aim at him. It fired, and he was devirutlized. During the instant this occured, Ryoko rushed forward and swept her leg low, taking the tarantula's leg's out from under it. Then punching the xana mark and destorying it. Ryoko was shot in the leg by the final tarantula, but still managed to somehow destory it with a kick to the head. She took a deep breath, relieved the combat was finally over. The tower was only a short distance away, and, without a vehicle left, ran towards it. She entered the tower like Aelita, and ascended to the top. She placed her hand on the panel.

Ryoko

Code... SPIRAL.

The walls of the tower began to spin in various directions, the floor of the platforms cracking. A red glow ememenated from the outside of the tower... and then the tower shattered like glass, it's fragments fading out like all debris on Lyoko.
"Tower destroyed." Ryoko said. "Bring me in, Jeremy." She shouted to the intercom.
"In progress now." Jeremy said as he pressed the enter key, and Ryoko faded off of Lyoko and reappeared in one of the scanners. Back at the hospital, principal Delmas, who was about to be overtaken by a mob of the possessed staff, was surprised as they all suddenedly collapse. Unfortunately, as they passed out, they were all piled on top of him, and he could not move.

The three of them came back up to the computer lab to find Jeremy already frantically at work.
"I'm hacking into the a satellite to track the signal from Aelita's cell phone." He explained. "In only a few moments, we'll know where she is."
"Did you think that perhaps the hunters might have simply dropped her phone somewhere so you couldn't trace it?" Kosuke suggested. "That's so obvious."
"I don't understand... if the hunters want to kill them... why didn't they just do it at the hospital? Why'd they kidnap them... and why are they keeping them alive?" Jeremy questioned as he waited for the signal to go through.
"Come to think of it... when that other hunter... Yamato, kidnapped Aelita, he didn't kill her right away. He waited for her to wake up, monologued for a little while... and tried to shoot her, right?"
"Yeah." Kosuke confirmed.
"This may sound strange but... they have a system." Ryoko tried to explain.
"As you're aware... we've had certain restrictions placed on what we could do... the promise made to Kiyotaka. It's kind of like a code of honor. That's what all those games were for. They were to give you a chance. For some strange reason... whoever's leading the hunters have placed similar restrictions on them." Kosuke explained in full. "They have to beat us mentally before they can kill us. Or something to that effect."
"But were still not sure if there are actual rules... or if the hunters just like to piss us off." Ryoko added with a snarl.
"I'd have to say the second is more likely." Kosuke responded.
"Any luck?" Ayumu asked Jeremy.
"I... can't get the signal anywhere. It's either been destroyed... or it's in a location guarded with electronic jamming." Jeremy said with frustation.
"It's hopeless then. Unless you have another way to track them?" Ayumu asked.
"Ahem... aren't you forgetting something?" Kosuke leaned on the shoulder of Jeremy's chair. "A certain function..." He hinted. Jeremy smacked his head.
"Duh! Now that the tower's gone, if I just launch a return to the past, then they'll be freed, and the hunters won't remember anything."
"And then... we can lay a trap and try to capture the hunters when they try to kidnap them again." Ryoko exclaimed. "It's perfect."
"Do it Jeremy." Ayumu said. Jeremy nodded, and keyed a sequence, his finger hovering over the enter key. "Return to the past..." He started, but before he pressed the button, he was stopped.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Rang a voice from the computer. Jeremy froze. A window opened in the center of the screen. It displayed a video feed, of a dimly lit room. Most of the shot consisted of the bottom half of a man's face. He was wearing a white t-shirt and a blue jacket. He had a gold earring that resembled a series of rectangles, it made an insteresting jingling sound when it moved. His eyes and up could not be seen, but they could make out some dark brown hair. His jaw rested in the palm of his hand, keeping it propped up, as if he was bored. The silver Xana ring was clearly visible on his middle finger. "If you press that button..." The feed flipped away from the man and to a feed of another room. It was a large, empty room, the only light coming through the windows. Aelita, Rio, and Sissi were all tied up to chairs in the room. "Then I detonate the c4 bomb hidden beneath the floorboards directly below them. They'll be dead before the return reaches them." Kosuke slamned his fist on the top of the monitor.
"You b*****d!!! You're the same one who tried to kill Eyes, aren't you? I recognize your voice."
"And you're the red haired freak who jumped me." The man responded as the screen flickered back to him. "What's your point?"
"How do you know about the return to the past?" Ayumu demanded.
"I'm quite familiar with all the supercomputers functions. After all... we helped design it."
"Huh? What's he talking about?!?!" Jeremy turned to Kosuke.
"Damn it... fine, I'll tell you. The hunters... or at least, the original ones... were scientists for Project Carthage. Many of them had even been scanned... so they know all about return to the past and it's effects." He explained, gritting his teeth.
"For two groups that are supposed to be working together... you sure keep eachother in the dark." The man taunted. "Unlike you... we and Xana have an... understanding."
"What do you want? Why are you taunting us like this?!" Ryoko demanded.
"Why... I want to play a little game, or course!" The man grinned. "If you win, you can free the hostages, and you'll all go free. Fail, and you'll all meet a quick, but painful demise." He chuckled. "Oh... and even if you do manage to initiate a return without me triggering the bomb, I'll remember. I'll just skip the games and kill them all with snipers within a day after the return. So it's in your best interests to play along."
"What are the rules?" Ayumu asked.
"There aren't any. The hostages are being held in the abandoned "x-cellent" hotel on the outskirts of town. You have until midnight to save them. If you can't... boom." The man grinned as the window dissapeared. The four of them glanced at eachother nervously... and then nodded, as they stood up and headed for the elevator.

Back at the hotel, Aelita and Rio had fallen into an uncomfortable silence.
"Rio... you told me... the hunters just want to kill all the blade children."
"Yeah."
"So why are they doing this? If they wanted us dead... couldn't they have just killed us at the hospital?"
"Well..." Rio pondered for a moment. "The truth is... I think we're being used as bait."
"Huh?"
"With me being held hostage like this... Kosuke and Ryoko won't sit idly by. They'll come here to try and save me. I'm sure Jeremy and Ayumu will do the same once they learn you've been captured too.
"And Sissi?"
"She's just an innocent caught up in this. She was there when they weren't expecting her... they weren't expecting you either I guess... but they didn't have any choice but to take her too."
"So what you're saying is... the hunters are trying to gather us all up. The lyoko warriors and the blade children..."
"Yeah. They want to kill us all in one big haul."

It was on the opposite end of the town... it was around 8:00 when they arrived at the abandoned hotel. It was a unique building... a work of art and modern architecture. While it was under construction, it was being dubbed the "hotel of the future". Even though it had been in the mid 90's it was already set of offer computer integrated rooms, high speed connections, and other conviences that still aren't avalible everywhere in present day. However, before construction finished, the .com bubble burst, and the company in charge of it dissapearred. And so, it was abandoned... incomplete and unused until this day. They split up and surveyed the perimeter of the building. They met back near the front.
"No sneaking in around the back." Ayumu reported. "There are mines buried everywhere."
"Mines? You've got to be kidding!" Ryoko commented.
"Afraid not." Ayumu replied.
"All the first floor doors and windows we could sneak in through are locked." Kosuke said. "And even if I pick the locks, they've been rigged with explosives. The instant we open one, we go boom."
"The only safe way in then is the front door." Jeremy grimaced. Of course, that's what the hunters wanted. It was too far back from the road for anyone to take notice, but the light's were on in the first floor lobby.
"Looks like we're expected." Ryoko comment.
"Fine hunters, you're on." Kosuke said firmly.
"Still... there's no dobut... the whole building is probablly booby-trapped. We must proceed with caution." Ayumu said. They all nodded to eachother silently, and then headed towards the front door.

"The game finally begins." The man said to himself with a smile as he watched them set foot in the lobby on a security camera. He was in the security control room of the building... every floor under surveillence on numberous monitors. Another sat in the control room with him, the female hunter from the kidnapping. A third man stood in the back, hands in his pockets. He was wearing a tan trenchcoat, and his face could barely be seen behind the zipped up collar. He stood stiff as a board, nervous.
"Relax, old man." The female hunter said to him. "This will be a peace of cake."
"Don't underestimate them." The man in the trenchcoat ordered. "Reyson... is everything set up?"
"Yep." The man sitting in the chair answered, as he picked up a small, wired phone up off the tabletop.

As they stood in the middle of the lobby, the phone rang. Not their cell phones, but the phone at what would have been the reception desk.
"Are they trying to lure us?" Jeremy asked.
"Lure us to the phone? Get real." Kosuke responded.
"Just answer it." Ryoko ordered.
"Huh? Why do I have to do it?" Kosuke complained.
"Now!" Ryoko shook her fist at him, and he hastily rushed over and picked up the receiver.
"Hello?" He asked.
"The hostages are on the top floor." Came Reyson's voice. "Too bad..."
"Wait... what do you mean too bad?" Kosuke exclaimed. In response, he heard a dial-tone. "Damn." He placed the receiver back down. Kosuke turned around to see that Ryoko had turned her eyes on.
"Do you guys hear that?" Ryoko asked.
"What... you mean they enhance your sense of hearing too?" Ayumu asked.
"It sounds like ticking... there's a bomb! But I can't tell where it is!!!" Ryoko exclaimed. Jeremy quickly surveyed the situation. All the hallways on the first floor were boarded up. The elevators were shut down. The only path was a single spiral staircase that led up to the next floor.
"Our only choice is to go up! Hurry!" Jeremy shouted to them as all four of them made a break for staircase. A few seconds away from the staircase, they heard the explosion behind them.
"Bombs rigged to the phone lines?!?! You've got to be kidding!" Kosuke whined.
"Hurry!" Ryoko urged him. They heard yet another explosion behind them as they climbed the staircase. Another bomb had been detonated at the foot of the stair. As they broke onto the second floor landing, Kosuke started up the stairs to the third floor, but instantly stopped, spun around, and tackled all three of them, knocking them onto the second floor.
"Look out!" He cried as a bomb exploded on the portion of the staircase between the 2nd and 3rd floors. The path became impassable... and if they had been on the stairs when it had detonated, they'd have been dead. The path back down was also impassable. "I guess there's no turning back now." Kosuke commented as he extended his arm to help Ryoko up.
"It might be better if we find a way down rather than continue on ahead. I'm sure there's another way... maybe if we gain acsess to the elevator shaft somehow..." Ryoko suggested. A light flipped on behind them. The lights had come on in a single hallway, the only one acsessible from their present location. The hallway was short, only about twelve feet long, and led to a pair of doors on either side. But in between them and the doors, was a grid of wires about 6-inches above the ground. Each square of the grid was only about 8 by 8 inches. The wires were connected to red boxes that lined the sides of the hall.
"Claymore mines." Ayumu muttered. "Someone's having a little fun with us."

"Such an unexpected twist... I had no clue Thomas' son was involved in all of this." The man in the trenchcoat muttered from inside the control room. "I don't know if it's goodwill or pity, but conspiring with those demons makes him no different from them. If he too must die... so be it."

"THIS SUCKS!!!" Kosuke shouted violently. "They've got traps everywhere we go!!!"
"Looks like everything's going exactly like they planned." Jeremy agreed.
"They're doing everything they can to match wits with us. To prove they're better." Ryoko commented.
"It looks like they're testing you... the same way you tested me." Ayumu stated.
"From the looks of it..." Jeremy started. "The only parts of the building with electricity are the lights... phones... and the security system."
"Security system?" Kosuke questioned.
"Surveillence cameras. The way they've been timing the lights and the bomb detonations... the hunters are watching us from somewhere."
"Which means there must be at least one enemy in the surveillance room, wherever that might be, watching our every move. It'll be tough to do anything without them knowing, so we should take care of him first." Kosuke stated.
"Not a good idea." Ayumu stopped him. "I doubt he'd go down without a fight... it's a waste of time."
"What do you mean a waste of time? It's game over once the detonate a trap we get too close to."
"No... they can't detonate any of the traps themselves. I can say with certainty that every trap in this building is run with trip-wires, motion sensors, and pressure triggers." Ayumu held up his cell phone. "Look... no service. I usually get perfect reception in any building. The entire building is being electronically jammed. No wireless electronics of any kind work here. It's to keep us from calling for help, but that also means they can't detonate a trap with a signal either."
"They can still use traps with wires though, so let's avoid any phone lines if we can." Jeremy suggested. The other nodded with agreement.

"That just leaves the path ahead." Ryoko muttered. "If we so much as graze one of those wires, those mines will take out this entire floor."
"It's too low to the floor to crawl under, and there's not enough space to step between the wires." Kosuke examined them closely. "Yeah... we're screwed." Jeremy surveyed the surroundings. The hunter had said that this was a game. And if it was a game, there had to be a solution. All he could see was a security camera in one corner of the room, as well as a pile of abandoned construction materials. Steel poles to be used for construction, assorted pipes, industrial strength rope, even a few simple tools like hammers, saws, and drills. Then it hit him.
"I've got an idea." Jeremy told them as he stepped over to the pipes, and began to assemble various materials and tools from the pile.

It took him nearly half-an hour, an accidentally cut finger, and a whole roll of duct tape later, it was done. It had been difficult, but he had fashioned a pair of makeshift stilts. He nervously got up on them and tested their strength. They seemed steady enough.
"Kosuke... use these to get across the hall." He leaned the stilts towards Kosuke. He also picked up the industrial rope and slung it over Kosuke's shoulder. "Take this with you, and tie it to something when you get over there. Then the rest of us will use it to climb across."
"Wow... good thinking Jeremy." Ryoko commented.
"Hey... hold on a second!!! Why do I have to do all the dangerous stuff?!?!" Kosuke argued.
"Because I said so." Ryoko said in a falsly pleasent voice. Kosuke sighed.
"Yes ma'am." He said as he reluctantly got on the stilts and crossed the hallway, narrowly missing the wires that triggered the bombs. He secured the rope to a sturdy pillar on the other end, as Ryoko tied a strong knot to the pillar on the opposite side. The result was a suspended rope they could use to cross the hall. Ryoko and Ayumu crossed it easily, but Jeremy struggled to cross, nearly falling on two occassions, but he managed to survive.

They now stood at a fork. To their left was an open door which led into a stairwell. To their right was a closed door, which also lead to a stairwell.
"Which way?" Jeremy asked them.
"Both paths are probably booby-trapped." Ayumu commented.
"We take the closed door." Ryoko replied.
"Why? That door's got to be rigged with explosives?" Kosuke argued.
"Exactly. The easiest trap to avoid is the one that's easiest to anticipate." She replied as she wrapped a layer of duct tape, still attached to the roll, around the door handle, everyone pressed themselves up against the other wall, away from the door, as she yanked the whole roll, turning the door handle and yanking the door open. She released her grip on the tape as the metal door exploded outward, blown away by the force of the explosion. Kosuke grinned as they all stepped into the stairwell and headed up.
"If they're trying to test us, they're about ten years behind the curve." Kosuke commented.

"They may be children... but they are resourceful. We really don't give them enough credit." The man in the trenchcoat said.
"Whatever. They're just lucky." Reyson commented cockily. "And even if they do get past the traps." Reyson paced towards the wall and picked up a rifle leaning against the wall. "Boom."
"The intruders have entered the north side emergency stairway." The female hunter informed them.
"Give them some light." The man in the trenchcoat ordered.

The lights flickered on loudly in the stairwell they had just entered.
"Bastards. They're leading us on." Kouske muttered as they climbed the stairs. "How many stories is this building again? And we have to climb all the way up? This sucks!"
"Stop whining." Ryoko snapped at him. "I know I'm in good enough physical condition to do this, it's you three I have to worry about."
"Well Ryoko... looks like you don't have to worry about that." Jeremy stopped her. They were on the fifth floor landing, and the passage up to the sixth had been caved in.
"Looks like they want us on the fifth floor." Ayumu stepped towards the open door that led to the rest of the floor.
"Are you sure you want to give up on this staircase? I bet we can find a way through." Ryoko called out to him.
"How do you suppose we'd do that? It's completely walled in." Ayumu disagreed.
"So you would prefer to just walk head first into another trap." Ryoko shot back at him.
"We've been in a trap since we entered this building..." Ayumu peered cautiously through the door frame. "No harm accepting one more invitation."
"Hey, you're the one who said not to rush ahead." Jeremy chased after him. Ryoko followed them wordlessly. Kosuke groaned as he reluctantly followed.
"Jeez... you're all the same..." He muttered.

"Jeremy? Are you there?" A voice said from outside Jeremy's door at the academy. It was his father. After getting no response for a little while, he opened the door to find Jeremy's room as it always was, astrew. It was past the student curfew, so Jeremy should have been in his room. His suspicions jumped once again to the abandoned house in the woods where Jeremy had hidden before. He needed to talk to Jeremy. Something had come up.

"Are you sure about this?" Thomas stood arched over, hands on the front of the cheif's desk. "Everything that they told me was made up?"
"Yes. I made a call to local police over in Canada. I asked them to check the facts of her story. No match what-so-ever. Furthermore... whatever is being covered up here, your son is a large part of it." The chief explained, and Thomas gasped. "Think about it... he spends nearly half a year being defensive about her... then suddenedly has a change of heart and tells you everything? What they told you was clearly a vast falsehood they created to throw you off the real scent."
"But... why?"
"That's what you were supposed to figure out. But I can see now you're too attached to this case because of your son to do what needs to be done. I'm afraid I'm going to have to put someone else on this case."
"No... wait! I can still handle this! Trust me!" Thomas pleaded. The chief looked at him speculatively.
"Fine. But we're taking a new angle to this investigation. I want you to investigate the people closest to her. That means, your son. If we find out what he's hiding, it will inevitable lead to her secret as well. Also... we have some new intelligence... the murders of Jim Morales and Imzato Shiridan, have all been connected to this. We aren't sure how yet... but we need you to find out. I trust that you can investigate your son objectively and unbiasedly?"
"Y-yes." Thomas said after hesitating.
"Don't let them find out they are being investigated again." The cheif ordered him before sending him on his way.

He returned to the present, ruffling through Jeremy's belongings, looking for clues. He could find nothing of improtance to his eye, and any attempts he made to hack his son's computer proved fruitless. He decided that, perhaps, Jeremy might have hidden something at the abandoned house, and carefully replacing everything as it had been when he left, he shut the door behind him and set out for the hermitage.

The four back at the hotel stood before another roadblock. They were in a wide, long room. It was to be a confrence room if it had been finished. Standing between them and the door was a wall of criss-crossing trip wires that was about 6 feet high. At each end of the wall stood a pile of barrels, presumably filled with explosives.
"It looks like we can't force an explosion like we did with the door." Jeremy stepped back after examining the wall closely. "I don't know how many explosives are in there, but the whole floor would probably collapse if they went off. And the rest of the building would go with it in a domino effect." Ryoko stepped close and surveyed the height.
"It's not too high. If we use our Eyes, Kosuke and I could jump right over it. You guys would be stuck back here though." Ryoko said.
"Forget about it." Kosuke stopped her. "We still have a way to go before we find the girls, we need all of us."
"That's besides the point." Ayumu interuppted. "You couldn't get through anyways. In addition to the wires... there are also... lasers." He pointed to the space between the ceiling and the wall. Ryoko looked and imediately noticed black boxes on one of the walls that also formed a net of motion sensing lasers. "They to go over the next, and you'll cause an explosion big enough to kill us all."
"That's sneaky." Kosuke sneered. "So... our only chance is to find a way to disarm the bombs."
"We have neither the time nor the tools." Ayumu stopped him.
"Well then you come up with something!!!" Kosuke yelled. Jeremy had fallen back meanwhile, and was examining what appeared to be a latch in the floor under one of the tables in the room.
"We'll go under!!!" He shouted to them as he pulled up the panel, revealing a tunnel.
"How... how did you know that was here?!?!" Kosuke exclaimed.
"This was supposed to be a "smart, high tech building". Naturally, there needs to be acsess tunnels like this to run wires through. They're all over the building!" Jeremy exclaimed as he crawled down into the narrow tunnel. A few moments later, another floor panel burst up on the other side of the net as Jeremy grinned at them, climbing out. Ayumu smiled and descended into the tunnel after him. Kosuke stared at the small acsess tunnel, and held the panel open for Ryoko.
"Ladies first." He said politely. He was rewarded with a harsh slap in the face.
"You dumbass. I'm wearing a skirt!!!" Ryoko shouted at him. Kouske wimpered as he descended into the tunnel with Ryoko behind him.

They stood on the other side of the next, with no remaining options but the next set of stairs, which they guessed would lead to even more booby-traps.
"Guys... I don't think it's necessary to play around with these guys anymore." Ayumu stopped them before they ascended the stairs.
"What do you mean?" Ryoko asked.
"These guys are way to predictable. There's no reason for us to have to deal with every single one of the traps."
"So you want to find a way to trick them." Kosuke summed up.
"Even if we did clear every trap on every floor, there's still no guarantee we can rescue them safely, right?"
"Fine... do you have any ideas?" Kosuke asked him.
"Do you have a knife? Ayumu asked. Kouske nodded and passed his silver knive to him. "Jeremy... can you pinpoint the power line out of a bunch of other wires?"

The hunters watched their prey from the control room as Kouske passed a knife to Ayumu.
"What are you kids up to now..." Muttered Reyson with some level of amusement as they walked into the camera's blind spot. A moment later, the electricity went out.
"Go to the electrical room and reset the ciruit breakers. Get the cameras back online." The man in the trenchcoat ordered the female hunter as she rushed out of the room. "Planning on pulling something just because we can't see you, eh? I was expecting... more..."

Aelita shivered as the light's went off on their floor. They had felt the rumblings as the bombs on the first floor had detonated, and they suspected their rescuers were on their way for some time now.
"The powers out! Jeremy and the others must be fighting back!" She exclaimed.
"Now's out chance. While the security cameras are offline." Rio grinned, as she twisted a knife she had been concealing in the hand, trying desperately to finish off the rope that bound her, which she had been whitling away at for hours.
"Wait! You were hiding a knife?" Aelita said, realizing that Rio had the knife for the first time. "Good thinking."

The female hunter must have managed to restore power a few minutes later, as the cameras flickered back on in the security room. They were nowhere to be seen on any of them, the fifth floor camera displayed only electrical snow.
"The fifth floor feed is gone." Reyson relayed to the man in the trenchcoat.
"They think they're being sneaky, but they're still on the fifth floor even though we can't see them." The man in the trencoat muttered. "What are they trying to do?" He turned to Reyson and the female hunter who had just returned. "Turn the elevators on and go investigate the fifth floor." He ordered them.
"Sir, the power is still out on that floor, and there's no emergency lighting, it's gonna be pitch black up there." Reyson argued. "What if they plan on ambushing us in the dark?"
"Then wear night vision goggles and eliminate them if they are so foolish. You are combat professionals." The man ordered.
"Understood sir." The female hunter said as she and Reyson picked up the rifles. They hurried out of the security room to the elevators. They were on the first floor, and they had just used a special key to reactivate them. They stood in the elevator, guns at the ready, as they reached the fifth floor and the doors opened. The only light came from the elevator, and it flooded out into the room. Looking much like SWAT team members in their bulletproof vest, night vision goggles, and rifles, they scoured the room, looking for them. After a couple of minutes, they both groaned. Reyson picked up the landline, a phone hanging on the wall, and dialed a number. The phone did not even ring once before it was picked up.
"We did a sweep. They're not on this floor." Reyson told the phone.
"What?" Rand the voice of the man in the trenchcoat. "Impossible! Where else could they have gone?!?!" He glanced at all the other monitors. The one on the top floor caught his eyes. It was the camera they had trained on the hostages. They were gone, severed ropes lying on the floor. "Get to the top floor!" The man ordered. "The hostages have escaped! Handcuff them this time so it doesn't happen again! Once you've done that, scour every floor until you find those kids! Now move!" He slamned the phone down. Reyson and the other hunter obidently ran to the elevator and made for the top floor. As it rose to the 15th floor, and headed for the top floor, the 16th, the elevator shook and froze. The female hunter seemed a little unbalanced by the shaking.
"What was that?" She exclaimed.
"I dunno." Reyson said, but about 30 seconds later they started to move again and reached the top floor. The burst out of the elevator as the doors opened, guns at the ready. "Come on!" They rushed through a corridor and into the large room where the hostages were held. They found no one there.
"Where'd they go?!?!" The female exclaimed. There was a rumbling, like the sound of something falling that came from behind them. "What was that!?!?" She shouted as they both ran back towards the elevator. They rounded the corner just in time to see it close, with Jeremy, Ayumu, Aelita, Kouske, Ryoko, Rio, and Sissi inside. The man in the trenchcoat pounded his fist on the console.
"DAMN YOU AYUMU NARUMI!" He shouted. "HOW?!"

"How did you get to the top floor?" Rio asked excitedly as they descended towards ground level in the elevator.
"We tricked the hunters into giving us a free ride on the elevator." Ryoko said with a grin.
"How?" Aelita asked.
"We cut the power to the lights, then climbed up into the elevator shaft, and waited for the hunters to come fix the problem." Kosuke grinned. He still recalled the four of them, pressed up agains the walls of the elevator shaft, supported by tiny ledges.
"Then, just before the elevator reached the top floor, we stopped it by triggering the anti-shock safety systems." Jeremy explained. They had jumped up and down on the roof of the car all at once, and the simultaneous shock had temporarily halted the car's movement. Kouske had pried open the door to the 16th floor, as the elevator car sat suspended between the 15th and 16th floors. He had quickly ushered the three hostages inside and up on top of the car. Then, as the car rose up, the doors had opened and the hunters had ran out. It had then been simple to open the ceiling hatch, drop the entire party down into the car, and then press the button and ride the elevator down to safety.
"Oh Kosuke, you're my hero!!!" Sissi shouted as she nearly jumped on his back, much to his displeasure. Her speech seemed strange, slightly slurred and in a strange tone, as if she was drunk.
"I wonder why she hasn't been questioning where we are?" Aelita asked as she glanced at Sissi.
"I had to use my eyes to wake her up. She's only barely concious, so only her most basic mental processes are working. But she'll be a spaz again once she wakes up more." Rio told her. Surely enough, that was also the reason for her strange manner of speech. She simply sounded as though she was drunk.
"Hey... Jeremy..." Sissi muttered in this drunked state as she got off Kouske's back. "Guess what?" She snorted. "Rio likes you!!!" She laughed insideously as if she had just told a hillarious joke. "Uh... where are we?" She continued to stagger about in the small space in the elevator, coliding with Kosuke again. Rio blushed profusely, and so did Jeremy, although he tried to hide it from Aelita.
"You guys were pretty amazing... to get free yourselves like that." Ryoko told Rio and Aelita, ignoring Sissi.
"I can't take any credit. It was all Rio." Aelita told her. The doors opened, letting them out on the ground floor, right in front of the entrance, as they all quickly filed out.
"Jeez... you two probably didn't even need our help." Kosuke muttered, as, having no choice in the manner, carried the drunken Sissi on his back.
"You're the one who wanted to bring some automatic rifles with us, Kouske." Ryoko snapped at him.
"Jeez... cut me some slack." Kosuke joked back. Jeremy's phone rang, and he took it out, answering it.
"Hello?" He asked.
"Jeremy! It's me." His father's voice rang through. "I came by your dorm to see you, but you weren't there. Where are you?" He asked.
"I'm... uh... at a party." He lied. But before the conversation could continue, Ayumu snatched the phone away from him, a distressed look on his face. He stared at the phone's display, which displayed three bars of wireless signal.
"EVERYONE RUN!!!" Ayumu shouted. "THEY'VE STOPPED THE WIRELESS JAMMING! THAT MEANS THEY CAN SET OFF THE BOMBS ANY TIME THEY WANT!"

Outside, the man in the trenchcoat sat in a black van, parked on the main road, near the driveway which led to the hotel. He held a black box with a white button in his hand. A glint of light came from beneath his trencoat and hat, revealing the man to be wearing glasses. He pressed the button. The seven of them ran out of the building as every bomb, every trap, on every floor, was triggered simultaneously. They stared up with terror and awe at the hotel, which was now entirely ablaze, smoke billowing from the top floor. The C4 bomb on the top floor had surely brought about the death of Reyson and the other hunter.
"Oh... pretty..." Sissi muttered in her drunken stupor, as Kosuke dropped her on the ground off his back. Before they could notice, the black van had driven away.

"Mr. Rutherford! We have mail for you!" Shouted the stewardess at the hotel in LA where Eyes was staying during his brief series of concerts in America. Eyes found this fact strange... since he had not told anyone where he was staying. He was handed a blue envelope with no return address or stamp, with only his name written on it, in a hasty scrawl. When he opened the enevlope, it was dramatically different. The letter was also blue, but it was written in white ink and was ornated with elaborate hand drawn borders. The text was a beautiful cursive that was so perfect, it was as if made by a machine. The letter was brief.

Eyes,

I'm coming back. I'll see you when you get back to France. I look forward to hearing your music again... and I hope I can be of some assistance in our fight.

Your brother,

Konone Hilbert

Eyes read the note over for a second time, then crunched the letter and envelope up in his fist, shaking.

Rio and Ryoko headed back for the hospital and Kosuke towards the school with Sissi, along with Jeremy, Ayumu, and Aelita. Though it took much prodding, they convinced Kouske to use his eyes to hypnotize Sissi and "adjust" her memories. Ryoko promised to do the same to Principal Delmas and the hospital staff upon her arrival. Jeremy had at first sugested the use of a simple RTTP, but the blade children had voted against it. There were only a few memories to be erased, and they didn't need Xana getting any stronger... or risk that the hunters may still follow through on their threat of killed him after a RTTP was used. The abandoned hotel was a necessary casualty, and with any luck, the destruction cause there may draw the police's attention towards the hunters, making it much more difficult for them to make a move. The three of them collapsed in Jeremy's room as Kouske headed to drop Sissi off in her dorm. When morning came, it seemed like everything had worked. Kosuke actually came and sat with them at the breakfast table, though visibly tired.
"Those eyes of yours sure come in handy..." Ayumu muttered through his omlettee. "Enhanced endurance and agility, knocking people out, waking people up, erasing memories, creating false ones, resisting Xana... what else do they do?"
"If I told you that, I'd have to kill you." Kouske said, half-joking, but half-not. Ayumu shrugged as he got up to scrape his plate. "You know Aelita..." He turned to her. "You could use them too. Don't forget... my offer to tell you everything is still on the table." Kosuke smiled. "All you have to do is ask."

While everything seemed well, it was not. Something else had happened the night before... something none of them could have anticipated. As Thomas Belpois scavenged the hermitage, he had found many, many clues. Vague information about project Carthage, photographs of Aelita with her parents, and other various things that aroused even greated suspicion within him. He examined the dates on the photos of Aelita, and could find no explanation to account for the ten year gap in her aging. He heard something move behind him and he whipped around, drawing his standard issue police officer's gun, pointing at the figure in the shadows.
"You there! Show yourself!" He ordered nervously. A man in a tan trenchcoat stepped out of the shadows, hands in the air in a sigh of peace.
"Relax Belpois, it's me." It was the police chief. Thomas sighed with relief.
"Whew... sorry about that." He holstered his gun. "I thought for a second you were..."
"Who, exactly?" The cheif asked him.
"I dunno. That's the problem." Thomas turned back to the room. "Do you know what this place is? Who owned it? And why are you here anyways?" The chief sighed a deep sigh, and then walked over and drew the curtains of the hermitages front window. He turned swiftly to Thomas, and placed his hand on Thomas' shoulder.
"Tell me Belpois... can you keep a secret?"

Code SPIRAL - 14 - lamenting angel

The next morning, a plane landed at the nearest airport. There was nothing special about it... it was an ordinary passenger flight, and passengers disboarded in an ordinary fashion. A young man... seemingly 17 or 18 years old, blended in with the crowd as a large number of people rode on one of the conveyor belts. He kept his hands in his pockets, and stared out the windows, looking at the clear blue sky outside with a smile on his face.

An hour later, after taking a taxi to the city, the young man walked down the street towards Catic. He carried a crossiant in one hand, which he only nibbled on as he walked. He wore a white jacket, with a red shirt beneath it. He had brown pants, black shoes, and short brown hair of even length. In his other hand, he carried a paper bag. He saw a stray cat staring at him through one of the fences he past. He casually tossed his crossiant towards the cat, which dived on it ravenously. He reached into the bag and drew out another, smiling as he bit into it.

Ryoko and Kosuke sat on one of the benches in the school's courtyard, eating their breakfast outside. Ryoko sat on the bench, leaning into the backrest, while Kosuke simply leaned against it from the other side.
"When's Eyes supposed to get back?" Ryoko asked him.
"Later today. I called and told him what hapened. He apologized for not being around to help. He's going to post-pone any more public appearances outside of France until we shake the hunters." Kouske answered as he ate a bananna.
"Did he mention anything else?"
"No... but he sounded really worried about something... you don't suppose a hunter attacked him while he was in America, do you?"
"Somehow I doubt that." A third voice interruppted their conversation. Both Ryoko and Kouske turned to the one who had spoken to them, their jaws both agape. "My intelligence indicates there are only a few hunters in America at the moment, and they're stationed mostly on east coast." The speaker continued in it's gentle, but creepy southern drawl.
"Konone? Is it really you?" Kosuke called out with awe to the young man in the white coat, who had simply walked onto their campus.
"It's been a lone time, you two." Konone smiled at them. "Oh... and just to prove it to you..." He stepped up close to Kouske, and then childishly pulled down one of his lower eye lids. Kouske stared at him confused. Konone noticed this, and then drew back. "What? I'm just proving I'm not possessed."
"Konone... you've changed so much." Ryoko stared at him.
"You've become much more lady-like yourself Ryoko." Konone complimented, "And you haven't changed at all Kouske. You could still put someone's eye out with that hair of yours."
"Hey, don't dis the hair." Kouske joked at him. "You may look different, but you're still the same guy.
"That may be so. I'm just glad you're both still well."
"So... why have you showed up so suddenly?" Kouske asked him. "What have you been doing for so long?"
"I've been traveling by myself for some time." Konone replied, but not answering the first question.
"Konone... did something happen between you and the hunters?" Ryoko asked.
"Nothing." Konone answered. "I just came to France to visit all of you... and eat some crossiants." He added as a joke. "Well... I know you two are still in school... if you have some time later, let's catch up somewhere nice, okay?" Konone turned and waved to them as he walked away. Kosuke caught his shoulder before he got to far.
"Konone... Rutherford will be back today. Do you want me to set up a meeting?" He asked.
"Naw. You know celebrities... they're always so busy. I don't wanna trouble him." Konone answered as Kouske let go of his shoulder. "See you around." He walked right off campus, with the two of them staring at him.
"That's a bunch of bull." Ryoko muttered. "If Konone came back... something big is about to go down."
"Yeah... I'm more worried about why he isn't telling us about it." Kosuke answered.

Jeremy and Aelita stood, peeking out of the vending machine alcover, spying on them. They had witnessed this entire meeting, and were curious about what it was about.
"He must be a blade child too..." Aelita whispered to Jeremy.
"Definately." Jeremy whispered back. It was then the bell rang, announcing for them to go to first period. Kouske and Ryoko didn't notice them sneaking out of the alcove as they made their way to class.

They had gym that morning... and the sport of the week was Tennis. Their third gym teacher, a rather chubby woman, barked out pairings for matches.
"Alright! Stones, Delmas, you're playing Takemaji and Clinger. Court 1!" She ordered. Aelita sighed as she picked up a racket. Why had she been paired with Sissi?
"Belpois, Narumi, you're playing Azuzuki and Osen, Court 2!" Jeremy and Ayumu both groaned. Osen wasn't too bad, but Kouske could easily destroy them both. As the four pairs made their way to the courts and began to play, a figure stood on the edge of the woods, watching the game on court 1 through the wire fence... watching Aelita carefully.

Later that day, both the lyoko warriors and blade children sat at their lunch table.
"I think it's strange..." Ayumu muttered. "That even though the hunters brought down that whole building, the police are trying to sweep it under the rug."
"I agree." Ryoko seconded his opinion.
"But what motive could the police have to cover it up?" Jeremy asked.
"We've suspected for some time... there may be a mole in the police or the government who's involved with the hunters." Kosuke answered to him. "You know... if I were you, I'd try to lean on your father to get a little information. Find out if they actually are investigating or not, or if someone in his department has been acting strange lately."
"But then he'll ask why I want to know." Jeremy shot the idea down. "And the suspicions it took so long to put down will come back." He cupped his hands nervously. "But if there are hunters in the police department... we've got a huge problem."

After school let out, Ayumu went on his ordinary, afternoon walk through town. It was a brisk day, so he stopped into a small shop on the corner and bought a cup of hot chocolate which he sipped as he walked. He was, as always, pondering things. Jeremy and Kouske were probably right about there being hunters in the police. Jeremy couldn't ask questions... but he could. He'd been held falsely in this case before, so if we went to the police station and started inquring, it would just seem like he was bitter about his false imprisonment.
"Hello Ayumu Narumi." He heard a voice from behind him. He had just walked past a small cafe, and there was a table outside, at which sat Konone.
"How do you know my name?" Ayumu asked him. He had not known about Konone's meeting with Kouske and Ryoko earlier.
"Why almost all of the blade children are familiar with you. You're Kiyotaka Narumi's little brother, right?"
"What do you want with me?"
"Nothing really. Just wanted to introduce myself." Konone held out his hand. "I'm Konone Hilbert. One of the blade children." Ayumu did not shake his hand. After a few moments, Konone withdrew his hand and stood up, walking past Ayumu. "Sorry to be so abrupt. I look forward to working with you... little Narumi."

"So... who's Konone?" Aelita asked Ryoko as they both walked down the hall of the girl's dorms.
"Who... who told you about Konone?" Ryoko demanded.
"Actually... Jeremy and I just sort of saw you talking to him today, and we overheard some of the conversation."

"Well that was sneaky." Kosuke snarled at Jeremy. They had started almost the exact same conversation on the floor below in the hallway of the boy's dorms. "He's one of the blade children."
"What exactly is his relation to the rest of you? You seemed surprised to see him." Jeremy asked.
"He was our leader for a while... he's the one who taught us all how to fight... and use our eyes. It's also because of him that we survived the first hunts."
"So... he's strong and smart... and he was your leader."
"Also... for some reason, his eyes are a lot stronger than everyone elses."
"He sounds like he's dangerous."
"But he saved us. To us, he was an angel. An angel with black wings."

"Sounds like you pushed yourself too hard." Eyes spoke to Rio. He had just arrived on his flight about an hour before, but made a point of visiting Rio before doing anything else.
"I'm fine now. Thanks to Ryoko, none of the doctors have any idea. Thankfully, my wounds didn't open again, so my recovery isn't set back. I'm just tired."
"Still... this place isn't safe anymore." Eyes said.
"I should be find for now... the hunters aren't they type to use the same method twice. It's a good thing Aelita was there, because we probably wouldn't have gotten out of that alive. I wish that girl Sissi hadn't gotten involved though. She was a complete idiot. Jeremy and Ayumu helped Kosuke and Ryoko rescue us, and we all got out pretty much OK..."
"Rio... we are who we are. Don't get so distracted." Eyes said calmly. "I know you have an attraction to Belpois, but..."
"I know..." Rio blushed. "Still... I want to have faith in them. If what Kiyotaka said is true... we could finally stop running. Stop hiding. We could be normal..."
"Ayumu is the key to escaping our fate. That's what he said. He never mentioned Jeremy."
"But... you're the one who said that he might have been wrong! You're the one who said that Jeremy could be the one instead of Ayumu!" Rio shouted at him, flustered.
"The situation has changed. We can't risk deviating from the path that Kiyotaka gave us any more than we already have." Eyes' cell phone rang, and he quickly drew it and picked it up. "Yes... is that so. Alright. Thanks for telling me." He hung up. "That was Ryoko. Konone is back in town."
"Huh? Really?" Rio grinned, almost ear to ear. "He must have come to help us now that the hunt has started for real! What do you think his plans are?"
"Rio... right now, think only about getting better quickly. I want you out of this deathtrap as soon as possible."

The next day, they had gym late in the day. The pairings for tennis were the same again, and for almost an hour, Kouske continuously delived slams into Jeremy and Ayumu's court, while Aelita surprisingly found herself holding her own against Ryoko. As she and Ryoko walked towards their rooms to change, the conversed.
"That was... wierd. I've never really been athletic... I don't know how I was able to play like that today..." Aelita rambled. She was surprised by how well she had done, but Ryoko clasped her shoulder.
"You know... there's a reason you were so good today." She smiled.
"What?"
"Your eyes." Ryoko grinned. "If you're trained, you can activated them whenever you want, like Kouske and I. But if you aren't trained... sometimes they'll come out without you even noticing, even if it's only for a few seconds." Ryoko let go of her. "Three or four of those big saves you pulled off, I saw your eyes change color. You're getting there." She broke off and walked into her room, shutting her door without another word. Aelita simply stood there, a dumbstruck look on her face. She stepped into her room, and then sat down on her bed, staring at her mirror. Her green eyes looked perfectly normal to her. She tried to will them to change color, to change, to do what she had seen the others do so many times, but she only succedded in making her eyes water. She sighed as she changed into her regular clothes. This was just more proof that she was one of them. She was reminded yet again of Kosuke's offer to explain everything to her... and his more recent off of teaching her to use her eyes. Somehow... she still didn't feel ready to face either. As she walked out, she found Ayumu waiting outside her door.
"What's wrong?" She asked him.
"I need you to help me find information on someone. His name's Konone Hilbert." Ayumu answered.

"Ah yes, Mr. Belpois. What is that you wanted to see me about?" Mr. Delmas asked as Thomas Belpois stepped into the office.
"I wanted to talk to you about Jeremy. I want to know EVERYTHING that's gone on with him since he came here."
"What kind of things exactly?"
"All the things he's gotten in trouble for... people he's known to hang out with... that sort of thing."
"Hm... give me a second." Delmas said as he turned to his computer. He brough up disciplinary records.
"Well... there's some detentions for skipping and acting out, but no more than anyone else. There was a graffiti incident two years ago... also last year he was caught with a girl in his room after light's out." Delmas read from the screen. "As far as friends go, had a few, but most of them moved away. His long time friend is Aelita Stones, and he's recently begun to hang out with Ayumu Narumi, who you'll remember as the boy who solved the case with Jim. You also took him in regarding the case of Rio Takeyuji."
"I'm familiar with him. Anyone else?"
"Only casual friendships with anyone else... though my daughter tells me he's recently been hanging out with Kosuke Azuzuki and Ryoko Takeyami." He closed Jeremy's window on the computer. "Sir... if I may ask, what is this about exactly? If I knew what you were looking for, I might be able to help you a little better..."
"No... what you've told me is fine." Thomas stood up. "If anything new takes place along those lines, please contact me. It's rather important."
"As you wish." Delmas said with a shrug.

As Thomas walked off the campus, he noticed a young man loitering near the gates. He decided to ignore the boy, as he was technically off duty.
"Thomas... I think I can help you." The boy called out to him, causing him to freeze in his tracks. He spun around.
"How do you know my name?"
"That's not important." The boy in the white jacket stood up and stepped towards him. "You're looking for dirt on your son and Aelita Stones, and I'm the one who can get it for you."
"How... how do you know that?"
"You know... you're the tenth person today to ask me that question." Konone said sarcastially as he smiled. "Let's just say I know a lot of things. I have connections."
"Just who are you?"
"You know... your questions are really cliche." Konone turned away from Thomas. "I'll contact you again once I have the information for you." He took a pace away from Thomas.
"Wait!" Thomas rushed towards Konone, but heard a voice call out to him from behind.
"Thomas!!!" Shouted a man who was coming up behind him. It was one of his fellow investigators, and also one of his friends. He waved at him from just down the street. He had only glanced away from Konone for an instant to see who had called out to him, but when he turned back towards where Konone had been, he was gone without a trace.

"I can't find anything on Konone Hilbert." Aelita said as she shut a window on her computer. "Well... we know he's one of the blade children because we saw him talking to Kouske and Ryoko."
"Plus, he flat out told me he was one of them yesterday morning." Ayumu sat on her bed while she sat in her chair.
"From his last name... he sounds like he might by German... but that's not even useful." Aelita rolled back in her chair. "Just how many blade children do you think exist? Is it possible there's whole groups of them in other countries, or all over the world?"
"There's no point in speculating." Ayumu ended that train of thought. "We'll never be able to find background information on them... and even if we get them to spill it themselves, there's no way to know if they're telling the truth or not." Ayumu stood up and headed for the door. "Thanks for trying." He walked out, and she sighed as she lay down on her bed. She just didn't know what she was supposed to do anymore. Maybe she should tell Jeremy about Kouske's offer... see what he thought. Her stream of thought was interrupted as her cell phone rang. She picked it up without a thought.
"Aelita Hopper... if you want things to stay peaceful... come alone without telling anyone to the fountain in the park right now."
"Who... who is this?"
"If you don't come, I'll take some time off and hunt Jeremy Belpois instead." The line hung up.

It was nearly sunset, and Eyes sat kneeled down on the sidewalk in front of his building, with the three stray cats surrounding him, eating from a wrapper he had placed on the ground, with chopped up dried fish. He had made a habit of feeding the strays, so they recognized him quickly now.
"You always were popular with cats." Konone said as he walked up behind him undetected. Eyes whipped around, his eyes flashing on in a fraction of a second. Konone made no move, and simply stood there with a grin on his face so wide that his eyes were closed. "You look different Eyes... did you lose some weight?" He asked. Eyes still said nothing, his eyes still on, staring at him menacingly. After some silence, he finally spoke.
"What do you want?"
"Eyes... we're lost. Both of us. There's a fork coming in our path." Konone said cryptically. "Eyes... I want to know which path you are going to choose." Eyes simply stared at him again. "We don't have much time left to make our choices."

"I told you before... I will not choose the path of destruction." Eyes answered. Konone's eyes narrowed a fraction.
"That's true... you did tell me before. I thought you might have changed your mind. But tell me... what is it that's keeping you on the other path? Don't tell me you believe that fool Kiyotaka... After all, to think that insignifigant boy is the key to our survival..." Konone laughed out loud. "It's just plain stupid." Eyes continued to stare him down. "Well... let's talk about this again some other day. Let's talk about something else..." He was interrupted as his phone rang. He picked it up as he closed his eyes... before the man on the line even spoke, he knew his identidy.
"Hunter?"
"If you don't want to lose one of the blade children... you'll listen to what I have to say. I have Aelita Hopper. Come to the fountain in the park right now.
"You'd only be telling me this if I was your real target... why are you going so far out of your way to involve her?"
"I couldn't find any other holes in your defenses." He hung up.
"Was that a hunter?" Konone asked.
"Yeah."
"Is there anything I can do?"
"No, I'm fine."
"I'm always ready to cooperate. All you have to do is ask." Konone told Eyes as Eyes walked away.

Jeremy's father knocked on his door as Jeremy was working on a program for Lyoko. He saved it and closed out the window.
"Who is it?"
"It's me." His father's voice replied.
"Come in." Jeremy called as Thomas opened the door and walked in, and closed the door behind him, then leaned up against to prevent the door from opening.
"Jeremy... today is the day that you will tell me everything." He said... almost threateningly to his son.
"Uh... what do you mean?" Jeremy feigned, but mentally cringed. He had disproved the information he and Aelita had given him.
"I've been patient with you up until now... but I'm about to break!" Jeremy stared at him for an instant. "I know you're involved with the group called the blade children. I know you've been involved in some way in all the murders that have taken place around here this year. I know you were involved when that abandoned hotel blew up... and above all I know that you've been hiding Aelita Stones real identidy since she came here last year... and that you're the one who forged her documents. I also now know... about project Carthage." He finally finished. Jeremy's gasp was 100 % audiable.
"How... how did you figure all this out?!?!" Jeremy demanded.
"I got the information from one of my superiors actually." Thomas said with his hands in his pockets. "He asked me to join him in a group..." He was cut off as Jeremy's phone rang. Jeremy let it ring several times before picking it up... their stalemate continuing. He finally picked it up.
"Jeremy, is Aelita with you?" Kosuke asked him in a whisper.
"No."
"Well I can't find her anywhere, and she's not answering her phone. Something's going on... there may be a hunter." Kosuke said urgently.
"I'll try to find her..." Jeremy replied. "Hey, why are you whispering?" He asked. But a moment later, someone took the phone away from Kouske.
"Hello? Who is this?" Delmas shouted into the phone as Jeremy hung up. Meanwhile in the library, Delmas shut Kosuke's phone.
"No cell phone in detention! Confiscated!" He held onto the phone as he walked away, and Kouske groaned. Back in his room, Jeremy stared his father down.
"Dad... I have to go. It's important."
"Not until you confirm what I've been told." Thomas blocked the door. "Tell me... why are you set on keeping all this such a secret."
"Listen... I don't know what you've been told about project Carthage... but if you were told EVERYTHING, you'd know why I kept it such a secret."
"If that's the case, then tell me everything!" Thomas urged him. "Prove to me that you aren't doing something wrong! I don't want you to get in trouble here!"
"There's no time for that now!!!" Jeremy yelled. "Aelita may be in danger right now, and every second you keep me here, she could wind up dead! Now move!!!" He stood up to his father as he stepped towards the door threateningly. Thomas silently stepped aside as Jermey rushed for the door, gripping the handle.
"Jeremy... this is the last chance." Thomas told him. "If you don't tell me next time I see you... I'll have no choice but to arrest you." Jeremy glanced at his father one last time before wrenching the door open and bolting down the hall.

Jeremy had only started to run, and only gone a block, when he saw Eyes running towards the park. He followed him, and the two found themselves running side by side.
"Didn't expect to meet you out here." Jeremy commented.
"I don't have time to chitchat with you." He bolted off ahead of him, as Jeremy struggled to keep up.
"Aelita's dissapeared. Where are you going in such a hurry?" Jeremy asked.
"This has nothing to do with you." Eyes argued.
"This had everything to do with me." Jeremy argued back. "I don't care if Aelita is one of the blade children... she's not like the rest of you! Why can't you people just leave her be?!"
"If that was our choice, I'd oblige you... but the hunters are not so kind."
"So she is being hunted!" Jeremy managed to keep pace with him again. The two ran for the park silently the rest of the way.

Aelita stood at the fountain, looking around suspiciously. The fountain was a popular hangout... there were about three dozen people loitering in the small clearing in the park. Her phone rang again and she picked it up.
"Look in the bushes to your right. You'll find a box." Aelita quickly paced over to the bushes and found a box poorly concealed within. It seemed like an ordinary cardboard box... about the size of a loaf of bread. It was cold to the touch when Aelita picked it up, and it weighed only a couple of pounds. "Now what?" She asked.
"Sit down and wait. Don't attempt to open the box or look inside it."

And Jeremy and Eyes reached the fountain, Jeremy saw Aelita and made to call out to her, but Eyes stopped him. Eyes' phone had just rang, and he picked it up.
"By now you've no doubt seen the girl." The hunter told him. "But don't make any attempt to contact her, or get to close to her. Let me explain the game." Jeremy pressed up close so they could both hear. "The girl is carrying a bomb. If you can disarm it, you win. If you can't the girl dies. It's an easy game to understand. Now... look in the bushes behind you." Jeremy quickly bolted over and ruffled through the bushes, finding an envelope. He opened it, and found complicated blue prints inside. "It's the blue prints for the bomb, Rutherford. I dont' mind if you're friend there helps you out. Two of you is fine with me." The hunter chuckled. "The schematic should be sufficient to help you disarm the bomb. But of course... there's a catch to this whole game. If you get to close to the girl, or the girl gets to close to you, I'll detonate the bomb. She's been instructed to carry it with her and wander through town. She doesn't know it's a bomb, nor has the game been explained to her. You also can't contact her. So... you have to figure out how to disarm the bomb without getting close to her."
"That's impossible." Jeremy argued with the hunter.
"That's the point, brat." Jeremy heard a jingling sound as the hunter hung up.
"This isn't good." Eyes muttered.
"Looking at the diagram... I think I could rewire the circuitry and disarm the bomb... but only if we can get close to it." Jeremy told Eyes. "Can you think of anything?"
"All I know is... whoever set up this game will be watching. Keep your eyes open for anyone suspicious who may follow us as we follow Aelita." Eyes told him.

Aelita's cell phone rang, and she answered it nervously.
"Yes?" She asked.
"Time for you to start walking." The hunter told her before hanging up. Aelita nervously picked up the box and headed out of the park. Jeremy and Eyes silently followed her, but Eyes seperated and followed a different path than Jeremy and Aelita, as if he was planning to cut her off somehow. She wandered a random path for about ten minutes, as Jeremy struggled to stay concealed from her. If she saw him, she would no dobut rush towards him, and the hunter would trigger the bomb. He saw Eyes waiting at an intersection on the opposite side of the street, blended into a crowd that was about to cross at the crosswalk. Jeremy rushed over to him.
"Were you followed?" Eyes asked him.
"No." Jeremy told him.
"I could feel someone following me." Eyes told him. "That mean's there's only one of him. So if we split up, he can only keep his Eyes on one of us." Eyes' phone rang.
"So... have you figured out the number of players?" The hunter asked.
"Two against one?" Eyes answered.
"Right." The hunter said, as Eyes heard a siren in the background of the call. "It's up to you two how long this game takes... and wether it's interesting or not. Come on... entertain me." As he hung up, an ambulance with it's siren blaring passed them.
"The siren was in the call. It came from the north... and we heard it on the call just before we heard it here. That means he's up the street somewhere." Jeremy pointed. "The hunter must be within two blocks from us right now."
"If he is along, then we have a chance." Eyes told him. "If we split up again... he'll follow the one who follows Aelita. But if neither of us follow her, he'll have to pick one of us. Once we know who he's following, we have to get a message to the other to find Aelita and disarm the bomb while the hunter can't see us."
"Good plan." Jeremy told him. "The hunter didn't set a time limit, right? That means the bomb isn't on a timer, it's remote-controlled. The hunter obviously has the detonator. If we can catch the hunter and stop him from pressing the button, then Aelita won't be in any danger." Jeremy suggessted.
"Also a good plan." Eyes replied. "We'll see how the situation plays out and decide once we have move information.

After another ten minutes, Aelita's phone rang again and Jeremy and Eyes ducked away to hide themselves as Aelita stopped moving.
"Where exactly are you wanting me to go? What's the point of this?" Aelita asked.
"Hey, hey, don't use that tone... it's about to get interesting... I promise."
"I... I'm not going to play your game anymore."
"You wouldn't want something tragic to happen to Jeremy, would you?" Aelita gritted her teeth in response. "You know... it's a real shame. The real tragedy began long ago when you were born one of the accursed blade children."
"What does that mean?"
"You'll understand soon... even if you don't want to." The hunter hung up, and Aelita started walking again. Eyes tailed her, but Jeremy broke off this time... they were about to put plan A into motion. About a block later, Eyes broke off from following Aelita as well.

About another block later, Jeremy got a call from the hunter.
"Hello?"
"Well... can you see me?" The hunter asked. "Cause I can see you." Jeremy was standing on a bridge, and his eyes and head darted around the surrounding area, looking for anyone on a cell phone.
"Where... where are you?"
"Let me tell you what you're thinking." The hunter said, and Jeremy heard the jangling yet again. "You'll blend into the crowd first... and then Rutherford. You think I'll follow one of you, and once you know I'm out of vision of Aelita, you'll have the other run to disarm the bomb. Am I right? And I'm guessing your plan B is to capture me and stop me from pressing the detonator. Is that a bulls-eye or what?" Jeremy was dead silent. "You know, I'm a nice guy. I've given you the blueprints... and I'm even letting your team have one more player then I intented. But still... you won't win."

Meanwhile, Eyes had realized he wasn't being followed, and had found Aelita's trail again, and was about to make his move. Aelita was walking with her head down, confused and afraid. She walked right into someone, a man in a brown jacket, with a brown hat and a white scarf. She dropped the box, which hit the ground as she rubbed her head after the collission.
"Sorry..." She apologized to the person. "I wasn't watching where I was going." The man simply shook his head, then picked up the box and handed it to her before walking past. He walked right past Eyes, who glanced at him suspiciously. Before Eyes could move again, his phone rang.
"Yo... I'm so bored I'm dying over here." The hunter told him. "Are you guy's going to make a move or what?" Eyes said nothing in response. "Fine... if that's the way it's gonna be..." The hunter pressed a small switch in his hand. "The countdown's started. Five minutes. I know you were getting bored too. Let's get this over with." Eyes heard a loud meangerie of sounds before the hunter could hang up. Eyes immediately hung up, and then called Jeremy.
"The hutner is near the marionette clock at the toy store. He's set a timer on the bomb, so we can get close to Aelita now. We have five minutes. I'm already right by her, so I'll disarm the bomb if you instruct me."
"Alright. Get the box and open the case, then call me back." Jeremy told him as he bolted towards the toy store. Eyes hung up and ran towards Aelita.
"Aelita!" He called out to her. She spun around, looking confused.
"Eyes!" She shouted. "What are you doing here?!"
"This is a bomb." He told her as he took the box from her, setting it on the ground and kneeling down in front of it. He reached to remove the cover...

Jeremy broke into the street of the toy store, the massive marrionette clock over it's entrance just finishing it's hourly musical tone. He glanced around as he tried to narrow down the people nearby. The road was full of fairly high end stores. It was a popular hangout for both older teenagers, and twenty-somethings who had fairly large paychecks. The hunter, based on the game so far, was familiar with the geography, which meant he hung out around there a lot. The hunter also seemed to be very cocky... he was overly confident in all the calls that had been made. It seemed to the hunter that he had already won. In the hunter's mind, he was the perfect man, who could not be beaten. And also... he would naturally have a method of escape already laid out... Jeremy saw a blue van sitting on the opposite side of the road. A blonde man was sitting in the driver seat, arm out of the window, flirting with a woman who was passing by. He wore a green shirt, brown jacket, had a pierced lip. An elaborate earring which made the jangling sound Jeremy had been hearing hun from his left ear... and Jeremy could only faintly see the glint of a silver ring on his finger. That had to be him... Jeremy bolted to get across the street, trying to dodge the traffic, but someone honked at him. The hunter heard the sound and whipped around and, seeing Jeremy, panicked as he started his car. He backed into the car behind him in his hurry as he pulled out of his parking space and tried to get away from Jeremy. Jeremy was nearly hit as the hunter lost control of the car, and it smashed into a red car on the opposite side of the road. He heard a sound like something dropping from inside the car, but diesregarded it as he took off down the road, far out of Jeremy's reach, grinning.
"Pretty good kid." The hunter said to himself. "Too bad in about 1 minute, your girlfriend is toast. Heh."

Jeremy stood on the sidewalk, out of breath. His phone finally rang, and he answered it.
"The game is over." Eyes told him as he walked away from Aelita. "There was no bomb in the box at all."

Meanwhile, the hunter had just broken onto the highway, and was starting to relax again. He heard a sound he didn't recognize though... a ticking. He glanced into his backseat. A cardboard box was sitting in the back seat. His eyes widened as he glanced at the timer that was still sitting on his dashboard. Only a few seconds were left.
"OH s**t!!!" The hunter screamed as an instant later the box exploded and the flames penetrated the rest of the car, and the second it his the gas line, an ear shattering explosions eruppted on the highway, sending flames, smoke, and flying pieces of metal in every direction as traffic in both directions came to an instant halt. The hunter was, or course, dead.

Aelita stared down at the box she had been carrying. It was empty. Eyes had simply walked away and made a call after finding the box to be empty. Eyes was still talking to Jeremy.
"I seriously dobut that the hunter was just pulling our chain with all this. There was a bomb..." Jeremy saw a plume of black smoke rising a mile or so away.
"Someone must have somehow switched the bomb for an empty box." Eyes told him. Aelita's phone now rang. She picked it up hesitantly.
"Hello?" She asked.
"Did you look inside the box?" Said an unfamiliar voice. She couldn't place the voice's owner, but she knew she had heard it before.
"The box was... empty."
"That's right. I believe your future was inside." The mystery caller hung up.

That night... Jeremy had told her everything that happened... his team up with Eyes... his father's incredible revelations... and the hunter's game. As she lay in her bed above the covers, unable to sleep... unable to even close her eyes... she heard the voice that had called her over and over again in her head.
"I believe your future was inside." She repeated the words to herself. She had neglected to tell anyone about this. The voice was strange... haunting. She couldn't tell if it was a voice she had heard recently... or if it was a voice from her past. A voice from BEFORE she had even gone to Lyoko. She just couldn't take this anymore. She had to know the truth. She had to know what the blade children were... and what she herself was. She silently changed out of her sleep clothes and back into her normal clothes before heading out of her room.

About five minutes later, Kosuke, who was sitting in his bed, playing a game of Tetris on a gameboy like device, he heard a knock on his door. He suspiciously turned on his eyes as he went to the door, and opened it. He blinked them off as soon as he saw Aelita.
"Oh... hey. What's up?" He asked. Kosuke and Ryoko had not known about the hunt yet... they intended originally to tell them tomorrow.
"Kosuke... I'm ready. Tell me everything." She said grimly.

Alright... it's time for Zaber's famous "writers notes"!!!

1. If Ryoko wasn't stopping him... Kouske would have killed off Sissi by now. Direct your anger towards her.

2. I am brining Odd and Ulrich back into the main story in the next chapter. Yumi will be close behind.

3. 14 - lamenting angel was based directly off an episode of Spiral. The entire episode was ridden with visual cues and hints as to both the identity of the man who switched the bomb, and the man who called at the end. Since it was far too difficult to convey in writing. So heres the hint.

Carefully re-read paragraph 24 of chapter 14.

UPDATED HUNTER LIST

Jim Morales - (deceased) - became a hunter while possessed by Xana. Killed by Kosuke, massive impact trauma.

Imazato Shiridan - (deceased) - posed as a gym teacher at Catic after Jim's death, and tried to pass information to Ayumu to use against the blade children. Killed by Rio, carbon dioxide poisioning.

Yamato - (deceased) - kidnapped Aelita and attempted to kill her, but she was rescued by Kosuke. Killed by Kosuke, shot through the skull.

Reyson - (deceased) - attempted to kill Eyes with a sniper attack on Christmas eve. Ayumu and Kosuke managed to catch him, but he got away. He later kidnapped Rio, Aelita, and Sissi in the hospital, and used them as bait to lure the blade children and the lyoko warriors into the trap ridden hotel, while working with "unkown female hunter" and "the man in the trenchcoat". He was killed when they wer betrayed by "the man in the tranchcoat", who triggered the building's traps while they were stuck on the top floor.

Unknown Female - (deceased) - Along with Reyson, she kidnapped Aelita, Rio, and Sissi to use them as bait for their trap. She was killed at the same time as Reyson when the bombs throughout the building exploded.

Police Commissioner Kinzaka (AKA The man in the trenchcoat) - (Active)
He was the mastermind behind the bomb ridden hotel. He clearly gave orders to Reyson and the unknown female, and sacrificed them by blowing up the hotel, hoping he'd succeed in killing the blade children who were also inside. He later appeared before Thomas Belpois in the Hermitage, and presumably told him extensive information about the Hoppers, Carthage, Xana, and/or the blade children. The extent of what he revealed is not yet known, but he is still acting as the police commissioner, while giving Thomas some secret assignments regarding spying upon the blade children, Ayumu, and Jeremy.

The Bomber - (Deceased)
The bomber attempted to hunt Aelita and Eyes by turning an unwitting Aelita into a walking bomb, and challenging Eyes to disarm it without either of them getting killed. Jeremy was able to deduce the man's identity, and he fled the scene, but not before pressing the detonator switch and starting a countdown. But as Eyes tried to disarm the bomb, he found the case to be empty. Someone had switched the bomb box with an empty one... and put the real bomb in the backseat of the hunters car. The explosion killed him as his whole car blew up as he drove down the highway.

Other Hunters

Franz Hopper - (unknown) - The discussion amongst the blade children seems to frequently reveal that Hopper is involved with, or is one of, the hunters. He may even be their leader. Kosuke mentioned that he's the one who ordered the extermination of the blade children, which the hunters appear to be carrying out.

Thomas Belpois - (unknown) - Depending on what he was told by Kinzaka... Thomas may now be a hunter. It is currently unclear as to what his true objectives in the case are. Does he just want to learn the secret for the sake of learning it? Does he just want to protect his son by finding out the truth? Or did Kinzaka recruit him and convince him to aid in the destruction of the blade children?

so it's ryoko's fault.... how would he have killed sissy?
PostPosted: Wed Aug 01, 2007 6:19 pm

hmmm... okay so my theory is the guy who switched the bomb in the episode had a brown jacket and a white scarf? as for the man who called in the end... it said Aelita thought his voice sounded familiar right? then, it might not have been the same guy who switched the bomb like i first thought, because he didnt say anything when he handed the fake to her. that is unless hes made another appearance somewhere... gah! im confusing myself!

i think i have to reread the chapters to get more info.
