Indeed, Owle would find the mental structure of the magpie being modified: it was no shapeshifter, neither had it been forced to submit to someone else's will. But in fact, there was another psionic entity in the bird's mind, it had accepted to lend someone its senses and its mobility.

"What do you know about my brother?"

He stopped advancing forward, instead moving in a slow circle aroudn them now, walking carefuly along the ground.

"What do you?" Was the simple question in responce. A smirk. "I know he always beat you up when you were kids...and that he's made a fool of you now."

"Knights!" The greenhaired man cursed and spat. Then grumbled where a flower grew up where it landed. He hated that.

"Jean I can say what I want...s'not like he doesn't know, just doesn't WANT to. Doesn't want to remember what made him stronger..." His eyes narrowed when Vahn started to move around the circle of flattened grass. Jean backed up into the longer stuff to avoid coming in contact. "Doesn't want to know what he actually IS."

"Neither does Dei-dei," Knights went pale.

"He doesn't have to remember," A horrified whisper that made Jean look down. A pause as he drew himself back up and leaned back grinning at the darker man.

"...Vahn Fah, DOES."

Knights reached into his pocket and pulled something out. It was a CD case.

File 377 Runes TOP SECRET, scrawled across it in big red letters.

"You wanna find out what happened to Sunstrike, don't you..." Jean seemed too horrified over his reaction to her earlier statement to hear Sun's name used casually again.

He tucked the recording back into it's place. "Well, I don't think you deserve to, you are too weak. Come and get me...beat me and it's yours, cause I ain't ever gonna give it to you willingly."

With a loud crack, the length of his flamberge hit the ground, splitting it slightly as his left hand gripped the handle, his right massaging the back of his neck.

"Either we're going to play...or you're giving me that disk. Dig?"

Yellowed eyes stared out with no emotion, even as steam rose from the blade's length, his entire attitude suggesting no mood for games.

Knights snarled softly when the earth was torn by the sword.

"Then we're gonna have to play, aren't we." A hiss of metal as his thumb pushed a small portion of the sword out of it's sheath.

There was a soft rumble along the ground under Vahn's feet, a split-second warning, before a pillar of dirt, about 2 foot high, slamed out of the earth, smaller then the one that had launched Knights and Jean over the wall, but ultimately the same magic.

To someone unprepared, it would send them sprawling. And even if Vahn took that second to move back, he'd feel the broadside of Knights' shoulder ramming into the already bruised portion of his chest, and bringing the sharp edge of a sword in to scrape across the darker mans side.

Owle watched the conversation, the new made flower, and the magpie with interest. The magpie wasn't nearly as interesting as Jean was right now...she could tell that two minds were peering through the bird's eyes, but a closer look would require going a bit closer to someone who probably knew more than a smidge about telepathy, and right now that was probably unwise. Sure, Owle would probably register as a very powerful telepath to their senses...it only took ten of the 256 snakes that resided within her to match the power of your average, off the street (NPC) telepath. However, that power was raw and unfocused, as though she didn't use her gift much...it would be like someone with a huge-a** sword and no training going against a master fencer. No, Owle didn't want to pick any fights with other telepaths.

So she let the bird be, and took a few slow steps toward Jean. Owle's hands were empty, and she carried no obvious weapons...on Gaia that didn't mean much, but there was just something about Owle that screamed she wasn't a fighter.

"Hey!" Owle waved to Jean. "It looks like they're gonna be at it for a while. You wanna...chat, or play tic tac toe or something?"

She didn't want to watch the fight. This was something she couldn't interfere in, so she didn't want to see what happened. She knew she'd wince every time Vahn got hit, and she really didn't want that.

She also figured she'd be safest over by Jean, and, by the same token, the girl would be safest near her. The man Vahn was fighting seemed to have some attachment to Jean, so doubtless he'd make some effort to avoid hitting the girl...and Vahn would make the same effort to avoid hitting Owle.

"!?" The ground shifting wasn't expected but it didn't mean he was going to go landing face first.

As the ground rose, he juste barely managed to keep his balance on his right leg, using the flamberge in his left hand as a counter-balance.

However, this also left him open the green haired man's attack. His opponent's sword barely deflected aside from the lifting of his flamberge, causing a short echo of sparks to fly as Vahn was knocked back earthward.

The rebound from the blow shoved both men backwards, sending grass and dirt flying into the dim light of sunset.

Being the original striker, however, afforded Knights the opportunity in the battle, by being prepared for the counter to his blow, rather then the person knocked off balance.

Digging in, he launched himself forward. For this, he didn't need to be too close or creative. The buisness side of his three and a half foot blade would come in for a low diagonal, hip to shoulder slash, right to left. Depending on how quickly Vahn countered would mean the differance between a shallow cut and being gutted.

This would mean that he'd be very prepared for the sword coming in from the left should Vahn retaliate with that. Unfortunately this meant a small window to his own left side.

He was really REALLY trying not to divide his attention between Vahn and what started between Owle and Jean off to the side.

----

Jean blinked and stared at the girl that had moved over to stand next to her, before grinning broadly.

"Hiya! I wouldn't mind playing at all, but if Knights told me not to it's probably best if I stay out it, he gets a little cranky if he see's my playing while his life is on the line."

She said this like it happened all the time. She smiled, wincing over the clash of swords and the sparks.

"What was your name again? I can't remeber if I asked before or not..."

"I'm Owle!" the shifter replied, grinning back. She knew she'd be making Vahn's assailant uncomfortable, and that was fine with her. It occurred to her she might be making Vahn worry, too, but, eh...he'd get over it.

"Mind if I sit?"

If given permission, she would settle herself down next to Jean in the grass, relaxing as much as she could while jumping to glance at the battle at every strange noise.

She didn't really want to watch...but she couldn't just not, either.

"I hope this doesn't end in either of their deaths..." And I'm prepared to prevent it either way... Owle shook her head, as though to shake the unpleasantness of her thoughts. "But, yeah, Vahn probably wouldn't be happy if he saw me playing while he was fighting. Doubt he'd notice, but..." She shrugged. What could one do?

"Who the hell do you think your playing with?!"

For a hundred years I've been making mistakes...

Even as his opponent's swrod came biting in, Vahn's right hand closed upon the blade, tightening it's grip despite the blood that flowed freely from the contact. With blade stuck in flesh, and gripped by his hand, he had the man trapped in place.

"Is this a game then? You want to play a game?!" Yellowed eyes narrowed even as he pulled the man's sword in, forcing him to coem closer to Vahn.

"Let's play a game then!" Pulled in tightly, Vahn's lips would be right by Knight's ear whispering, even as his left arm reared back, Flamberge smoking from the blood along it's surface. "How about how many times I can call you an a*****e before I finally die?"

And in the open plains, there would be two spectators. One man, one woman. Nothing but ghosts, whatching one person intently. They didnt move, they didnt speak, they just stared, standing off in the distance.

Knights glared over the blade as Vahn pulled him in, the red reflection of the Flamberge scrawling up the side of the mirrorlike surface of his own weapon.

He let the man say his piece, and then calmly let go of the hilt, bringing his elbow up to crack Vahn in the face before the other sword could come down on top of him.

The grip reversed on the hand remaining with the weapon so that it was horizontal across his chest instead of perpendicular. This supported his hold enough to actually not only crack Vahn once, but twice, second time being harder, in quick succession. This was an instinctual reaction, brought about with training.

Training with someone who focused on getting in close and using you're body as a well trained weapon. The sword was a tool, not an extention of his being.

If the connection worked, the combination of blows and the reverse grip would give him the leverage to drag his body down and underneath the upraised sword arm, leaving a nasty gash in Vahn's hand.

---

"They don't really understand, you know..." Jean, as opposed to Owle, was avidly watching, making sure of something from the looks of it. Anything she said to the girl sitting next to her would be said almost absentmindedly. "Considering they're both fighting for the same goal."

"This is petty...it isn't a game either though, Knights really feels like he's protecting everything. He's always been a little hard-headed about that. He knew Vahn would find us eventually..."

A sigh.

"But really, he should consider whats happened and worry about Dei-dei's new feeling afterwards."

((Erm, Kraun? Could I get some more details out of you? About how far away from us are these ghosts standing? Can I see them? Are they transparent? Do they look human? Do they have souls (ie would they show up if Owle stretched her telepathic sense around the area?) Is there anything ridiculously unusual about them that a telepath would notice, if she noticed them in the first place? Can Owle tell who they're staring at from however far away she is, assuming she does eventually notice them?))

Owle visibly winced when Knights' sword thudded into Vahn's flesh, that visceral revulsion rising in her at seeing a loved one get hurt. Unlike her other friends, who she'd seen pull through lots of situations that should have killed them, she wasn't quite convinced that Vahn was invincible yet...perhaps because he wasn't convinced himself. "I hope he knows what he's doing..." she mumbled, mostly to herself.

Jean's words brought her eyes away from the fight...sort of. Owle kept glancing back, against her will, out of worry. But the words distracted her, at least enough to keep her calm, get her mind working on something else.

"I don't understand any of this..." Owle answered, shaking her head. "I met a guy named Sunstrike, once...he was a nice guy, but I don't remember much about him. Has he...I mean...he hasn't died, has he?" The foreboding way Knights had said the CD contained what happened to Sunstrike, the way Vahn had reacted...

"Who's Dei-dei? What in the world is going on? I just..."

A glance up at the battlefield, then down at the combatants feet.

"I don't get it."

((Erm, Kraun? Could I get some more details out of you? About how far away from us are these ghosts standing?

One hundred meters.
Owle Isohos
Can I see them? Are they transparent? Do they look human?

They have physical form, 'ghosts' used as a metaphore because they have skin as pale as ghosts.
Owle Isohos
Do they have souls (ie would they show up if Owle stretched her telepathic sense around the area?) Is there anything ridiculously unusual about them that a telepath would notice, if she noticed them in the first place?

What would be unusual that makes them stand out is that they are undetectable by supernatural or extraordinary senses. They give off no distinct energy signature, psionics dont work around them within 10 feet, they move without sound, dont produce heat, and dont have a scent.
Owle Isohos
Can Owle tell who they're staring at from however far away she is, assuming she does eventually notice them?))

Following the eyes of the two, one has eyes of pure mercury orbs, no irises, no pupils, reflecting everything of the world in their blank space. The other doesnt. Both do not move their heads to watch said person, but the female's eyes do move, as they are relatively normal. Unless someone can zoom their vision to see facial features clearly at 100 meters distant, it is unlikely.))

His head snapped back from the force of impact, blood flying from his open mouth. "!" Soon followed by another succesive strike, but all the while Vahn's body never faltered nor did he give leeway.

He did his best to maintain a grip on Knight' sword and hold him in place, but footing was gainst him, which only caused more blood to fly-- blood which began to become thick in the air.

Blood which began to rain down in flames.

Blackened flames.

The reaction was slow at first. The unnoticeable seam running along Vahn's right arm, from where he had received healing from Yaits. A darker power at work, as something inside stirred in reaction to the blood letting. The seam glowed a deep hue of black even as Vahn extended his right hand towards Knight', "Game over!" and let loose with a fierce gout of heat.
