"Not unless I know the name already. Some things are easier to figure out than others. Like your shields. I figured they'd be safe to try. I wouldn't want to say, cast something that was supposed to set a bone when there were no broken bones around."

Relm gave a laugh. "Sometimes it's fun, the element of surprise. Sucks when painting a fire based monster & accidentally healing it with one of it's own fire-based attacks hoping it might have been something different."

Kaleb nodded, it all made sense to him. He was lucky in that he would never have to worry about the intricacies of offensive magic, he just had to make sure the recipients for his healing and shields wouldn't reject the elements.

He looked down at his book with an almost wry smile. "I've never seen any monsters other than what they showed us at the magical institute. Adventuring sounds exciting, but I think I would be to scared."

"Adventuring is exciting!" Relm swung her legs in girlish delight beneath her. Of course if she knew how she appeared without "pretending" to be so sweet the once percotious youngster who kept Granpa Strago on his toes would probably cringe. "The trick is to make sure you're with some fighters, or others that are willing to protect you so you can cast effectively. It's not fun going down in a fight." The pictomancer shuddered, once again remembering how little it normally took to take her down.

Kaleb smiled a bit in return. "I don't think there's much need for adventuring these days, but even if there was, there would be be better white mages to take than me." He fidgeted a bit and looked down at his paws, he would probably be too neurotic for adventuring.

Relm snorted at that. "You never know when some crazed idiot gets it in his head to take over the world." Cocking her head she studied the mage intently. "And why would you say that?"

Kaleb's eyes widened briefly, thinking on another conversation he had earlier, but he quickly dismissed the thought when he heard Relm's question. Then he blushed brightly and fidgeted. "I-I w-wouldn't be able to handle it, really," he stammered quickly, "I..."

He paused, looking all manner of nervous and uncomfortable as he debated telling Relm the truth. In the end he gave a dispirited little sigh. "I-I feel faint at the sight of blood."

All prepared to say that of course he would be able to handle it, Relm opened her mouth & closed it again. A perplexed expression crossed her features. "Really?"

But her quick mind was already spinning with possibilities. She knew Kaleb would not have said it unless it were true. He was not a beguiling type. And Relm would know. "Have you tried blindfolds? Our kitsu's have a friend that tries what he calls "no eyes seeing" because his mate is blind. Or I suppose you could see about creating a spell so that you could see without seeing through the blindfold... or a spell that made it so you couldn't see blood!" Her eyes lit & her head straitened at that thought, her legs resuming their swing that she had not noticed stopped when Kaleb had stumped her. "Maybe even a spell just to ward off fainting! Those Weasley talaye make new trick spells & items all the time -I'm sure with your studying, Scholar, you could find something!"

Kaleb blushed brightly at her question and couldn't bring himself to raise his eyes, he knew how ridiculous it sounded. A white mage who spent so much time healing others shouldn't have such a weakness.

But he looked up with a surprised expression as Relm continued, completely unphased by his admission. The blindfold might already work, even though he hadn't thought to apply it to his current problem. With his mastery of shields and forces, he was already adept at 'feeling' his surroundings based on how his magic pressed against them. It was the same skill he used in locating injuries but applied to a larger range. A spell that warded against fainting would be even better, so he wouldn't have to maintain so much active magic to feel his surroundings.

He frowned a bit as he thought on it more. "Usually blood happens when you least expect it," he said, almost cautiously as though he didn't want to get his hopes up. "I would need to know it was coming before I could use any of those strategies."

Forehead creased in thought Relm frowned. "No. No. You're right. If you pass out, you won't be able to cast anything. No. There's got to be a way..."

Hopping up, the pictomancer started to pace back and forth in front of where Kaleb sat on the bench. "There's gotta be a way to make the spell permanent. Like what I do when I turn magic into permanent paint." She huffed in frustration. "The Wizards do it all the time! There's gotta be a way for us mages!"

Kaleb chewed on his lower lip a bit. He had some self-maintaining shields, but those wards were inflexible and tedious to set up, and likely couldn't provide a proper effect. But then again, could he even 'cure' his fainting? He would be getting into the neurlogical reactions to the blood stimuli, or the hemodynamic responses that followed, and altering both of those permanently may not be in his best interest.

But even if he went back to the idea of simply preparing beforehand if he knew he might encounter blood, perhaps not even the blindfold would work. He wouldn't be able to wear a blindfold out on jobs as a Turk, and people coming to the emergency room where he did his part time work wouldn't feel confident being treated by someone with a blindfold, regardless of the fact he usually healed without needing his sight anyway.

He hugged his book tightly to his chest, even thinking so hard about it was starting to make him feel a little ill and lightheaded. "I-I don't know if I could make anything work," he said in a quiet and trembling voice.

She stared at him pointedly. Stubborn, the pictomancer had never been one to back down from a challenge once she had set her mind to it. "Maybe not today, but we will come up with something. Even if I have to go to Fred & George! I'll get Remus & Ginny in on it too. Wizard magic, like I said, is a heck of a lot more permanent than most things I can do. And if you don't think you could do it... I'm guessing more permanent than you know too."

She was still pacing, and her white hooded cape fluttered defiantly behind her, snapping in the wind over her words though Relm paid it no mind.

Kaleb frowned a bit, completely forgetting his earlier discomfort now that his focus had just shifted. Was Relm questioning his magical skill? And his ability to create a permanent effect of all things, when that was something any white mage of his level should be able to do?

"I can make a permanent spell as well as any wizard who has studied as much as I have." He said, looking up with a determined and almost indignant expression. "That's not the issue here."

Kaleb's tone brought Relm up short. She spun to look at him & blinked to see the indignant look on his face. Then, slowly, a crazy grin spread across her face. "Oh. So you do have a backbone after all? That's good to know, Scholar. Very good to know. Questioning your skills does it? Yes. That would make sense."

She laughed softly, walking over to sit next to him again. "I didn't mean to make it sound like I don't respect your skills, Scholar." Almost an apology, but that was still all the precocious female was likely to give. Those at least seemed to come more readily from her thanks to Keme's influence. "I don't like my skills questioned either. You can do all sorts of magic I can't and that's always something I can't help but admire. But the way the Bookwoom & Mischief Squared work magic is different than what I do. Probably different than what you do too, since there are similarities between ours more than I've seen between theirs & mine."

She breathed out heavily, pressing her lips together as if unhappy with the way her words were coming out. "I bet if you could see the magic door they set up you'd be able to understand! Or the fire pit Mischief Squared spelled for Blondie & Romeo's campout. Spell should still be around that."

Kaleb looked suprised, and then looked down at his book with a blush. "I-I'm sorry, I-I know y-you wouldn't doubt me. I-I wasn't thinking." He fidgeted a bit as she sat down next to him, and glanced over with a sheepish and apologetic expression before looking back down at his book.

"I-I know there are lots of differences between wizard magic and mage magic, the institute where I learned trained both. But I don't think it's a difference of what we do so much as how we do it." He offered a small, lopsided smile, although he was still embarassed about snapping earlier. Even if it was only a gentle snap.

She waved his apology aside with a grin. "Not at all. Always good to see you take a stand. Like when you stood up for Buzzer at the bookstore." Relm chuckled softly with a slight shake of her head, finding it vastly humorous how everyone but who they were trying to pair up that day was now together. And Buzzer now found love elsewhere & is moving out... who could have known?

"As for the magics... maybe wizardry is just better at permanence." She shrugged with a short laugh. "I'm a painter, not a scholar. Still... no harm trying to find out."
