humm little dream i may have someone for you that draws males really really well and im quite fond of some of the females he draws as well. i happen to work with him and trying to convince him to start doing RL commissions as well.

his site is http://www.methodicalchaoss.com/ and im trying to get him to set up a price list over DA or on his site (hes really shy though so its hard to talk to him without him freaking out or trying to do his macho male thing).

would you be interested in something in that style?

Now that's interesting, next to all those cutie gal artists I've been stumbling upon...he's really good with macho men and monsters, something it's pretty hard to find...you think he would do a not too scary, but quite old female character?

but still, it would mostly depend on the price range :3

Within the guild, I know Woe and I both take.

That is true. I ain't goonna be able to do anyhting fast, though.

Not sure who else within the guild. Not that many active people. I suggest asking Audley or Mek. They do a lot of RL commission-buying.

Does anyone know of a decent free web host with no advertisements or pop-ups? I'm having issues with the people who were hosting my domain. (Issues where they conveniently forget I've already paid them up until October, and delete my website for "not paying them.")

Inanycase I wanted to upload character profiles someplace else for a while, until the storm's through, so I don't feel like I'm being an a*****e. "Oh yeah, I'm going to pay you for that when you finish, but sorry you can't get the information right now. Yeah, that's pretty inconvenient."

A free host with no ads? Do those exist? I'd be happy to host your pages at angstypenguin.com for a while for free. You wouldn't be able to edit them or anything though...but at least they'd be up, right? sweatdrop

They are out there, though few and far between.

But that would be stellar, Rae <3 I'll set up all the images in a photobucket account so it's just html files. Though, how shall I go about getting them to you?

I didn't get any really stunning art for a while, so I started looking for rl commissions lately, but I just can't find anybody open, who's style I like D:.... Can any of you rl-commissioners help me here xDDD?
My ideal price range is up to $50, but if the art is really good, it can be moved up to $100... I really want to kill the stagnation I'm in lately with my collection x.x

Maybe http://aullya.deviantart.com/ (formerly strahan)? She said in one of her old account's journals that she takes black and white commissions (like this one: http://aullya.deviantart.com/art/be-a-knight-75161259 ) for about $30. I dunno if that's what you're looking for though, we tend to commission different styles.

Jitsumi1221 - your friend has really nice art~! But it's a little weird that he retains Design copyright/you have to purchase it when the characters are already designed and belong to the commissioner. It's a little off-putting neutral
Maybe that's only for the concept art commissions? That would make a little more sense, even if I don't agree with it.

rae - thank you for suggestion queen zenobia [i'm so late in replying]. ;i
i THINK i already found someone, but we'll see how that works out.

mek - even if an artist doesn't state so anywhere, copyrights always belong to them unless they state otherwise in writing and the license agreement is signed by both parties.

that person is just saying that he reserves the right to sell the piece or use it anyway he feels he'd need to and that the commissioner gets no sort of monetary compensation or a percentage of his profits. for private work it's a given, but i guess there are some people who don't know that and may be upset to see an image of their character being sold as a print or however.

buying rights to an image costs a hefty sum and whoever gives that away for free [with the proper documentation] is either someone unfamiliar with unethical design practices or someone just completely out of their minds. i'd never do it myself, not even for most of my real freelance work. biggrin

I wasn't talking about where he states he retains copyright/reproduction rights of the image which I believe was this part

I reserve the right to use all commission pieces in my portfolio. Sole copyright to the work(s) can be purchased through additional negotiation.

But I think copyright of Character Design is a little different than copyright of the image. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the design of say, Alcarin with her peacock eye and multi-colored hair is my intellectual property, not the artists'. It doesn't make sense that he could redraw and/or sell her design to someone else and I have never seen in anyone elses commission guidelines (and there have been many with lots and lots of copyright information) about retaining the right of the Character Design unless they were building the character from the ground up with small to zero input from the commissioner.

This is the section I was talking about which was spaced seperately from the previous quote which, to me, indicates they mean seperate things.

I retain copyright of Character Design(s) and reserve the right to use in any way I wish. Sole copyright to the Character Design(s) can be purchased though additional negotiation.

I'm not complaining about the copyrights to the actual artwork which clearly belongs to the artist. But I can't agree with them taking the credit for the character's design as well.

I agree with Mek. Character design should belong to the character's designer. Perhaps he added it there as a clause for his own creations or designs? Best to let him know bout it though.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 09, 2008 7:36 am

Might be a clause for pieces where he's told to come up with the physical design of a character? Might as well just ask him?

Woe - Yes, that is something I considered and mentioned in my first post on the subject.

As for asking him, I'm not interested in commissioning anyone else right now, it was just something I found curious and I wanted to mention it for anyone considering/intending to commission him to get a clearer notion of what they're signing up for (and that it is a curious practice to lay claim to someone else's design just because they commissioned you to draw it) and perhaps for Jitsumi1221 to inform her friend that it's a bit unclear.

*nods* sure thing, i'll send him an email staright away quoting what you all are saying so he can understand better *nods* he was asking me if he should change anything and since i havent actually ever commishioned a piece before for real moonies i wasnt absolutely certain. he'll be happy to finally have some real input instead of my random musings ^^

thankies for the heads up

when i read this: "I retain copyright of Character Design(s) and reserve the right to use in any way I wish. Sole copyright to the Character Design(s) can be purchased though additional negotiation." my mind went elsewhere. i -thought- they were referring to characters they design themselves for other people's projects, not a character which was already made by the commissioner which the artist in turn re-drew.

trying to claim rights over someone else's character would never really hold up anywhere, so i agree with you there now that i see where you're coming from. the possibility that the text meant that the artist would try and steal/claim the commissioner's character and strip the person of their rights simply because they re-drew it never came to mind. it is indeed very unheard of and not very fair/legitimate. at all. :s
