He smiled and said, "It has been my pleasure, milady. I'm just glad I could find you sooner, and not later, to return your jewelry to you."
Jaster's usually happy demeanor was flattened ever so slightly by her next question. His face fell, and he proceeded, "Unlike you, as you say, I spent the first decade of my life living with my parents. I was approached by a knight, and he took me on as his apprentice. Since that time, my teacher, my parents, and my family have all been killed. I had always had something to anchor me, something that I can fall back on should times turn to the worse. Now, I do not have that. In the past few years, I have had nothing but myself. I suppose the only reason it saddens me is because I find it rather easy to become lonely." He sighed, then looked up. "I suppose you needed not to hear my life's story, though." He looked up, and thought to himself, I don't know what you're telling me, but if you intend for me to do your work, it would be good to have allies.
He looked over at Kernyel and added, "I think the only place I'm not going, milady, is Tier. I'll be heading north somewhere. I know not where yet. I would glady accompany the both of you, if you do not mind my company."
Jaster watched Alhana perform her ritual, and watched in amazement the sword known as Mishizuri. It put the sword sheathed on his back to shame, he thought, but then he smiled. His sword was his sword. It had been crafted for him, specially tuned to him, and perfected for him and him alone. And the sword didn't matter too much in a fight. One's skill was almost everything. He smirked and imagined fighting side by side with the one who would wield that weapon.

Kernyel woke early in the morning and smiled in anticipation. She was ready in five minutes flat, even including washing up. As she tied off the end of her long braid, she looked expectantly at her companions, impatient to be off. It would be a good day, she thought to herself. And without further adieu, she was off and headed north on the road to domachi with two new companions, humming an intricate and mysterious tune to herself. It would remind most listeners of rain on tree leaves and waves lapping lazily at the shore. Her spirits where high again; a time to be cherished by any who stuck around long enough to see her shiftyness...
((My day's been tough; someone else come up with an interesting occurrance, please...))

((Interesting, you say? Ask Spoof. 3nodding Have some insanity at breakfast. It's the best I can do.))
Alhana heard and listened to Kernyel's humming and invisioned what she was humming. Eh, if I don't get breakfast going, someone's going to complain, and having been a mother of four, I'd rather not have that going on. Alhana said as she uncurled herself from under the cabin, her 'bedroom' door in actuality lead to a hollowed out area she had dug out herself. While it did have all of the amenities to let her take care of herself so she didn't look like a beggar, it was mostly meant for a dragon.
Cleaning herself up, she ascended up the stairs and entered the main cabin room. "Kernyel, whaddya want for breakfast. I can come up with anything and everything? Oh, and Jaster, you get a vote too if you're up."

Jaster awoke early that morning. He sat out front, by the door, and removed his platemail. He tediously polished every facet; he wanted to look his absolute best going out into the world with two new comrades. He finished with his polishing, and put the platemail back on. He sheathed his sword behind his back, and hung his crossbow by his side. He straightened everything twice, then did it again. Finally, he decided he was ready. He stood out front and waited for Kernyel and Alhana. He didn't have long to wait for Kernyel, as she came through the door ready. She looked like she wanted to be off with them, so Jaster made no argument. All he said was, "Milady, I don't think Alhana is quite prepared to be off yet." He flashed a toothy grin and looked round. It was only here and now that he suddenly noticed the absence of the shadows attacking him. Now that he thought on it, they hadn't attacked him for a few days. He looked at Kernyel, then back at the cabin where Alhana lay. Providing everything went well, this was already looking to be a change in things for him.

((Wow, i think our story might just fall away and die at my rate of creativity recently....Sorry!! Let's go with George's tidy melding of our two posts))
Kernyel made a frown about the hold up, but courteously reminded herself to be thoughtful and accomodating (sp?) to her newfound traveling companions. She poked her head in long enough to hear the last of Alhana's statement and George's reply before returning into the house with a huff of impatience. "Fine, flap-whatcamacallits, then..." These being furnished for them all by the too kind Alhana, Kernyel promptly gobbled hers up and stood up tapping her foot impatiently, waiting for the others to get a move on.
............
FINALLY, everyone was prepared to set off. And set forth they did, towards the north; the road to Domachi. With their journey once again commencing, Kernyel was once more in her jovial mood, practically skipping her way down the road a few paces ahead of the other two; innocent and content as a child. She even had the time to gather a few flowers and twine them playfully in her own hair before moving on to Alhana's ((assuming you're in your human form...)). In her plain-woven, forest-green dress, she truly looked like some sort of paradox between woman and imp-child. The only thing that drew away from this illusion was the wicked gleam of her two long daggers as she danced her way in and out of the trees along the road. ((Dear me, I'm going far, far down the road of childish fantasies, aren't i? Oh well, such is her personality anyways; always changing....))
The Sun was between noon and dusk and their feet were getting tired. With a small sigh of exhaustion, she turned to her companions, "Shall we break for camp?" With a nod towards an ever so convenient stream nearby. ((XD))
By the time the sun was setting, camp was made, a fire was going, and a delicious stew was bubbling over it courtesy of Kernyel's freshly gathered herbs that day and a bit of game newly caught by one of her companions.
They stayed up a while, eating, making preparations and a few plans. Kernyel volunteered the first watch that night (She hated getting up for second watch...). After she was sure George was asleep, she wandered over by Alhana to see if she was awake. She wanted to talk to her; the woman seemed knowledgeable enough and perhaps she had some information on the creature she'd seen watching her from the pool... and other things....
She stood over the woman, watching her even breathing, willing her to be awake, despite the calm appearance she saw before her.

((First off, Alhana uses an elven form. No one expects a hawt elf chick to smash through someone's plate armor. xp Oh, and it happens, don' worry about it. ))
Alhana had only the guise of sleep. She had always found that when one had their eyes closed, their hearing became sharper. Dragons were no different.
Her eyes opened, blinked a few times, and focused on Kernyel. Finding something pressing in Kernyel's eyes, she sat up, and yawned, feigning sleep. "Yes, Kernyel?" She asked with a quiet voice, hoping to not disturb Jaster..
Quite frankly, when the three companions were traveling, she had found Kernyel to be too childish for a traveling companion. Maybe when Teir was still under her hands, and Auren's as well. That shot a lightning bolt of pain, where Auren's soul used to reside within her.
That bolt of pain was reflected in Alhana's eyes, tried as she had to hide it.

Kernyel was relieved to see Alhana wake up, but she looked...hurt? Kernyel, misunderstanding the reason behind it, felt almost instantly guilty for bothering the woman, and almost turned to go. But she needed answers, and Alhana was one who might have a few of those....
"Um...I'm...sorry, for bothering you. I, erm..I just wanted to talk with you...about the other night, in the woods." She spoke so softly, you might have thought it was nothing more than a breeze on the leaves, but she was sure Alhana would hear; the woman seemed to have a myriad of heightened senses.
Taking a deep breath, she looked at the beautiful-faced Alhana and began. "Last night, when i was in the woods? Well, i had found a small brook and pool to sit beside. I was happy there. The woods hadn't moved or anything...it was just....peaceful. But, when i looked into my reflection, i saw....something. It was black and had the most piercingly malevolent red eyes...and it was right behind me. At least, it looked that way. I mean, if it had been truly there, i'd have thought the thing was resting on my shoulders!...But, when i turned to face it, I saw nothing. Absolutely nothing. Not only that, but there was nothing in the sounds and mood of the forest to indicate that it had ever really been there... it was like what i saw and felt was a frozen instant in time that nothing else seemed to experience!" By now, she was shaking a little. Not for the first time, wondering if she was somehow insane as an after effect that day in the water. She looked pleadingly into Alhana's eyes, willing her to know something, anything about what she'd seen that would somehow restore her trust of her own mind.

Alhana chuckled softly. It was not to be mean or anything. "Teir is a blasted, cursed place. The land is recovering, and there are still many demons running around making fools of themselves. You see, fifteen years ago we killed their lord and master. Well, I didn't, but I was part of the group who had been with the Priestess. I didn't go to the island of Laos, since I was still grieving for Auren. But I digress. Since their lord and master are gone, so is the majority of power. Many of them try to feed off the fear, pain and terror of creature, men, women, and children. I kill them when I can, but that's not often. They stopped showing up right about the time my son left home."
Alhana stood up from her camp blankets. She had wisely decided not to sleep in her natural form. She didn't need her two companions to flip out and run in terror. That would not have been productive. Not at all.
"Speaking of mourning for Auren... You may or may not want to watch this." Alhana said quietly. She took out a knife that was painted black on one side, and seemed that it could've easily blended into heavy armor, roughly one and a half times heavier then Jaster's plate, and built much differently. She then ran the blade along her palm, and pushed heavily into it. The cut obviously started bleeding, and she put the knife away. Squeezing some of the blood onto the ground, she took her other hand and dipped her fingers in it, to run the blood along her cheek-bones. It was Auren's way of mourning something, to signify something lost forever such as a loved one.

Jaster was a heavy, heavy sleeper. In fact, the only thing that would ever wake him from his slumber was the sound of battle, or the sound of someone needing help. Niether of those sounds were being made, however, so he slept like a rock. After a while, he rolled over, and his snoring ceased. He looked up at Alhana and Kernyel with groggy eyes and said, "Is it my turn for shift yet?" then promptly fell back into the dreamworld.

Kernyel let out a long-held breath. She simply nodded at Alhana's answers in satisfaction. It was a with a quiet stoicism that she bore witness to Alhana's act of remembrance/mourning. It was not her way, but she could understand loss keenly, and she was somewhat honored that Alhana had let her observe this ritual.
"thank you, Alhana. You have eased my mind somewhat. I apologise for keeping you up, please rest." She walked quietly away from the beautiful woman to let her rest, walking the quiet paces of her watch until the time came to awaken Jaster.
She leaned over him and quietly spoke his name, hoping that would wake him. After a few failed attempts, she realized it would take a bit more and so with a small look of regret, she shoved him hard with her foot, right in his ribs. When he was finally awake, she went to her pallet and laid herself down next to Alhana, inhaling the sweet, tangy scent that drifted on the wind tonight as she fell quietly away into sleep.

Alhana did not go to sleep. She stood up and sighed. She had to get out and drift for a bit. She would be back by morning, and Kernyel's breathing did told her that she was not quite out yet. Getting up, she walked away from the camp site... to find a clearing to spread her wings.
Finding a suitable clearing, she resumed her natural form, which was that of a massive dragon. Well, not so massive compared to the beasts that were known as Toleranth's kind. They were... out there to say the least.
Opening her wings was a nice graceful stretch. Damn Jaster and Kernyel. If they want her, she'll be over her in her clearing and sleep.

Jaster was up, and more than ready to stand watch. It was really what he did. Fight. Battle. Wage war. He thought to himself, and decided that it wasn't so much that he enjoyed it, but that since it was all he had ever done, he expected it. So he watched, and waited patiently for something to call his attention. It wasn't long before Alhana got up and walked off. She said not a word, and Jaster merely watched her. He was sure she was capable by herself, and decided that just in case, he would extend his patrol to encompass where she had meandered off to as well. The next watch was Alhana's, but Jaster was not tired, and Alhana had finally fallen asleep. Jaster was a slight bit shocked at finding Alhana in her natural form, but managed to stay quiet and decided to not say anything about it. He would let them rest. After all, it was the gentlemanly thing to do. He smiled to himself. What a gentleman he was, yes. Cutting men down merely because they stood between him and what he stood for. They stood for something as well, but they suffered a cold death at his blade for it. Well, at least he tried. He smirked, and walked back to the main encampment.

The dawn broke bright and early the next morning, and Kernyel was up to watch it, fully dressed and ready to go. She watched the lines of clouds on the horizon change from purple to pink and so on until the sun was high enough to make a laudable attempt at dispersing the thick streams around it. The day looked like it would be overcast at the best.
Her nose tingled at the aroma of fish that was cooking over the fire she had started. She smiled in satisfaction as she dished out food for her companions. She enjoyed the breakfast she'd made; fish was definately one of her favorite food stuffs.
__________________((Time warp))
As the three fellow travelers were trudging along their road, with ever-thickening clouds above them, the forest began to fade away until finally they came upon the open Plains. She had been long away from this part of her world. She never had liked it. Too open, too dry... Just not her prefered element. And the dust...She hated the dust.
The clouds that had been threatening from the north all day, finally converged over them with a crack of lightning and fat drops of rain. She completely enjoyed the moment. it wasn't too long until she, and the other two with her, were completely soaked. They might prefer some shelter, she thought to herself. She walked on, seemingly unaware of the soaking downpour upon their backs.
She raked through her memories, trying to identify how far away they were from one of the many shelters she'd used in her travels. Finally, she looked at her friends with a jerk of her head to the east. There was a burrow of sorts that an old friend of hers had used years ago. Maybe he was still there, maybe he wasn't. They'd see; at the very least, they could get dry there.
And so it was, that after a few meters of walking in the rain and high grass, they came upon another unimposing hill. However, once she walked them around to the other side, they discovered a worn door at the foot of the small bulge of earth.
She rapped on the wood, causing a cloud of dust to attempt and rise in the drenching rain. It was only a few short moments when a sputtering old man of suprisingly large stature reached the door and opened it just enough to spy his intruders' faces.
With a sigh of relief, Kernyel smiled dazzlingly at him and winked. He promptly threw wide the door and drug them all inside, giving her a huge bear hug in the process. "Nyela, m' dear!" He said in an affected dialect. "Sturaz, my good friend! How nice to see you!" she said, genuinely full of delight at meeting an old friend. Loving as he was to Kernyel, he was not a trusting man by nature, and he eyed the other visitors warily. " 'oo they be?" he asked her, his tone guarded. She laughed full hearted and musical. "These wonderful people are companions of mine. We head northeast. This one", she said, motioning to her flame-haired companion, "is Jaster; a brave and kind-hearted knight." She bowed her head slightly to him in Sturaz's cultural sign of friendship. "And that stunning woman over there is....Hana..." She said, with just a slight hesitation over her name. She was unsure if this woman wanted her identity spread all over heaven and back. She nodded slightly at Alhana as well, and turned back to Sturaz. "So, my old friend, what have you been up to?"
That question was enough to get him talking on his life and fixing a large, hot meal for his new visitors. His home was one large dug out room, much larger than anyone would suspect from the outside. There was plenty of room for them all and no one, least of all the large Sturaz had to bow a single head to be comfortable; he'd made a good dwelling and she was grateful for it. And so commenced the afternoon, over good food, good wine, and great stories. Kernyel laughed cheerfully at every old tale and joke he told, and later sat quietly admiring him. He was not young, but he had a body that made you think of stone or a tree; something permanent and unyeilding. Large enough to make you feel safe, and warm enough of spirit to keep you from being afraid of him.

The night was growing deeper and her companions were dozing quietly around a warm fire when Kernyel finally got around to asking him about Kealie. The look on Sturaz's face was enough to make her wish she'd bitten her tongue off long ago. It was like thunderclouds entered his countenance and his eyes actually began to tear up. "She's...she's gone, Nyela...." He stopped and cleared his thoat harshly before continuing. "she was killed a few months ago in a raid on Shurie." he trailed off and his fists were clenched. "I tried to hunt them down, Nyela, i really did...Found a few too," he said darkly, "But the leader, he's gone and i haven't been able to track him down..." She gripped his hand fiercely and couldn't speak...her eyes and his said it all.
She remembered Shurie. A small, poor village on the edge of the plains, set far off from most other settlements. It wasn't so poor as to struggle for existance, but it was no flourishing center of activity either. Kealie had been like a sister to Kernyel, and Sturaz's lover since shortly after she'd first befriended him. She always hoped they'd be married by now, but she never suspected this!
She looked around at her companions, trying to gage their reactions. She would not sign them all up for anything, but she had already made a promise to herself on the matter. Sturaz was no helpless man, but he was not wealthy enough to just pack up and make his road home until he found this man. He was a tough man and a good smith, but he was no trained fighter... "What's his name?" she whispered to Sturaz, softly enough for the others to hear, but not loud enough to require their response if they didn't choose to involve themselves.
"Larknam" he said gruffly. Quietly wasn't a word to use with his voice, but it had the sound of waves in a cave...hollow and rumbling. She nodded to him once, and he looked hard at her before putting his heavy arm over her slight shoulders, finally sharing the grief he'd had to shoulder by himself. She let him fall into her, even though it meant she could hardly breathe. He was lost in his saddness and had never been a man to hide anything genuine. A man like him seldom had to explain his actions to anyone and despite his harsh exterior, he was a gentle spirit. She tried to hold her own tears back as best she could; she didn't want to encourage any stronger tears than were already being shed by her old friend.
She did look at her comrades, though. Unsure of their reaction to such an affair. It wasn't as though either of them had any real attachment to herself or her causes. She had no expectations on them, but in her heart, she did hope not to travel this path alone. A fine way to end a cheerful day, she thought cynically while this giant of a man shuddered in anguish against her.

Alhana nodded. "I too, know what it is like to lose loved ones... More then just one..." She said distantly. "Tell me, though, what did this leader look like? My son is up north, and getting into a fight with bandits. Mayhaps they have traveled north, to Domachi?"
