Alyx handily dealt with the spiderling, and was already on to the next one even as he was being showered in crystal shards from the first one's death. He couldn't be sure, but it felt like he was actually moving faster somehow. That he was just becoming much more fluid and streamlined as his gaming continued. He also felt like he was doing himself a disservice by not blocking as much as he should have been, but come on, what was he supposed to do? He couldn't deal damage while he was blocking --at least, not much-- and soloing was very much a damage-dealing job. He was making himself a weaker tank, but there was nothing to do about it. He was still upset about his lack of training in block, though. Sure, his block and One Hand Straight Sword were both roughly neck and neck, but he was having trouble remembering the last time he had actually had to block to absorb damage. He was becoming complacent. Too high level and too immune to damage to actually be challenged by his environment. I mean, look at him. He was soloing the strongest mob he'd ever seen in this game, and he hadn't blocked once. What was up with that? He might as well go pure DPS and heavy armor, and be done with it. True, he didn't need his defense that much while he was soloing, but when he was actually in a group, he was extremely beneficial. Due to that utility, even though it wasn't exactly terribly effective in solo combat, he should make the effort to utilize the skill whenever he could, to stay sharp. That was, against mobs that weren't the size of school-buses. He decided that he would make more of an effort to keep his block skill up, so that he would be of benefit when he finally got a team together. That had been a grand challenge, and for much of the fight, Alyx was merely throwing his shield in between the young boy and the Bear. Without Alyx there, Abaddon would have certainly died, and he almost had, despite Alyx' intervention. Alyx had made a difference in that boy's life. He'd saved that boy, and he could do that for everyone else. No longer would he be the last man standing by dint of his massive damage output alone. He would be the reason that his party succeeded, not merely an onlooker as his party is slaughtered, helpless to draw aggro for fear of being killed himself. Alyx raised his sword and readied for the next assault, standing firm with the spirit of his future emanating from within. Alyx was thrown off balance, but managed to regain his footing in time to turn and attempt another dash attack at the rampaging monster. He was doing well, if he would stop trading blows with this thing hit for hit. He hadn't dealt nearly as much damage with that last attack as he would have liked, and he'd lost a sizable chunk --almost ten percent, by the looks of it-- of his healthbar. Well, that could have gone better. He clenched his eyes and shook his head to clear it as he raised his sword, which flashed in its oh-so-familiar way and carved a vicious line in the air as Alyx rushed forward to strike. An inhuman --literally-- scream echoed through the chamber, and whatever paltry attack the Queen had offered to Alyx in return was ignored by his heavy armor, made from the corpses of her slain children. Alyx was laughing in a vindictive, cruel manner as he watched the Spider Queen's limb fall to the ground and explode into a shower of shards. "One leg down. You want to lose some more?" Alyx' eyes kept track of the monster's health bar, and saw it dropping steadily until it was almost at the halfway mark, Alyx' notification fading from view. He had wrecked this thing.

He not only slashed a vicious, glowing scar in the body of the beast, but hacked off another leg, which exploded and left the Queen more or less symmetrical in her deformity. Alyx was still laughing that horrible laugh and readied himself for another attack before the Queen realized that she was clearly having a bad day and ran away again. Only two spiders came to her aid this time, though, and Alyx taunted them. "What's the matter? Are you getting scared, or have I just killed all of your little brothers and sisters already?" Alyx shook his head and pulled out a rookie health potion. Better safe than sorry, honestly. He had taken a few hard hits, so he knew that the Queen could deliver them, and it had been a bit since she'd really whaled on him, so he was probably coming due for a good hard critical. He actually managed to stumble out of the way of one of their attacks, and the other, while it managed to hit him, did not hit well enough to actually deal damage, and was thus not a threat. Alyx shook his head as the potion's taste settled down in his throat. He really didn't like the taste of these things. He should try to never have to use them. Ideally, as a tank, he should not be taking so much damage as to be incapacitated, but usually, as the tank, he would be taking an incredible amount of damage over the course of his character's lifespan. The taste of the potion was still on Alyx' tongue, and he smacked his lips in disgust, even as the warm trickle of energy flowed throughout his body, healing the minor cuts and bruises that he'd accrued throughout the fight. He was halfway done with this fight. At least, the Queen was halfway dead. There was no telling how much longer the actual fight could last, but it was at least closer to being done than it was before he'd started, and he'd been terrified then. Now, with his health resting somewhere just into the green, he felt comfortable in knowing that her health was deep within the yellow. He was coming close to getting this done, and reaping his rewards. His mouth was wet with the idea of treasure. His eyes alight, Alyx lowered his sword swiftly at the last spider in his way. Alyx charged his attack, watching the glowing white light of his sword reflect off of the six remaining eyes that the Queen had. Yeah, I've got this handled. He allowed the power to break through him and he felt his feet leave the ground as he was pulled behind the impossible momentum of his venom-coated sword. There was no way that Alyx could lose this fight. Not after he had come so far. He was going to be victorious. And rich. Don't forget rich.
