He’d wanted to help but how did you fight an enemy that seemingly had no weakness, an enemy that ripped entire bodies apart as though it were nothing? There was nothing they could do but watch in horror or die themselves, until the room was splattered red, until it simply was red, until the red swallowed everyone and everything and then there was nothing.

He was nothing, but he did not know he was nothing, had not the awareness to know he was nothing. He was only grey and colorless, a wisp of any sort of self, driven by his longing, by an intense desire for something intangible, something he could never quite reach and couldn't describe, an appetite that was never sated. He wandered aimless, because there was no direction, only need and insatiable want.

There was just one point of focus now. The fog condensed into a form, a figure. She was red, she was true Destruction, all of her, but she was not Insanity.

'This is the predicted end', she spoke, and her Heart began to crackle and slowly shatter, piece by piece, 'Summon me and I will give you everything you desire in this world.'

The illusion collapsed and so did their loss of sense. They were all just Hunters. They were all just alive, neither fog nor Insanity, nor anything in between. They were standing in an open room, the door behind them unlocked. In the center of the room was a single fragment of red. It hovered in the air, it sang of power and then-

- BANG-

More figures were entering the room. They were distinctly not Hunters, wearing greys instead. All of them had a pin on their shirt, a circular pin, a serpent eating its own tail.

"I'm sorry, but that actually belongs to us." She was holding a weapon, it looked exactly like any Hunter weapon, a sword. She was holding a weapon, and pointing it towards Gale.

When he regained his sense of self, it was to find a sword pointed directly at him.

It took Gale a while to realize that the illusion was, in fact, an illusion, and it collapsed around him fast, Gale and his team left standing in the middle of an empty room. He stared around, blinking in bemusement, and it wasn't until the door had burst open and the sword pointed at him that Gale started to piece things together.

A circular pin.

He slowly pivoted to look at her, and then at the red fragment, the long, white form of Jinhai appearing in Gale's hand. He pointed the rifle at the girl, his expression quite calm, though inwardly his heart was beating too fast for his liking.

"I'd really rather you not," he said, hoping he sounded a lot braver than he actually felt at the current moment.

She was Nobody, who were you? Just a gray form with a longing, unsure of what to do but deciding to find comfort that there were others like her. Maybe someone would tell them what was going on, or maybe--

There. Something different, someone with power. What the figure offered was a dream come true . . . maybe? . . . She didn't know. But an offering was an offering--

--And then she was Stormy instead, and the illusion disappeared. But the red fragment had not.

The greatsword hung limp in her grasp but quickly rose as people in gray cloaks (circled pins) filled the room. The terror from the bunker hadn't quite left her and returned in full, her heat beating quickly as the adrenaline pumped. She was still near Gale as before, but the woman had her weapon out; she could probably swing faster than the trainee could defend.

Nevertheless, Stormy readied herself to move and glanced at Gale before moving to the rest of the opposition, watching for now. This was still his mission, she had to trust his decisions.

"Oh come on now, this is the more humane alternative to putting you guys in an arena and broadcasting everyone killing themselves in public right?" The girl grinned, and didn't put away her weapon. "I hate to have to do this, but we are Couriers, and we really need that piece of the Heart to get things done, so-"

- "Wait, let me do this." A hand restrained the first girl talking, as a second petite girl broke the ranks. She had long blonde hair, curly, delicate and perfect and wore a simple grey one piece dress with tiny grey boots. She looked exactly like the deceased Moon Assistant.

"Hi Gale," Charlotte took a step closer. "Don't be scared. It's exactly as it looks. I'm here to save you."

Gale shifted his feet, the rifle to direct it towards the girl. His stance grew more protective, one arm spread out a little behind him as though to keep the others from being injured - not that he could do much, in the long run. The expression on his face flickered and then hardened.

"No, that's okay, I'd really rather you - " he started to say, but the rest of his sentence trickled away into nothingness.

Gale stared. And then stared some more, because what he was seeing could not possibly be the truth whatsoever.

"What the bloody hell is going on?" he asked, his voice loud in the echoing room. "Why are you here? I saw you..." Gale trailed off, his gaze narrowing slightly. "Was that just a ruse? Or are you not really Charlotte? Or were you working for them this whole time?"

"Gale, slow down, I'm safe, we did the broadcasting as a precaution of sorts." Charlotte really had abandoned all pretense of accent or her old personality at this point. "We're on your side. We have always been. You know that right, we've been trying to rescue everyone off the Island. That's our primary goal. To save you and everyone else. You'll be safe with us."

She didn't understand Gale's shock but tucked the detail away for later. The rescue bit was getting her attention, especially paired with the word broadcasting. "Safe with the people who asked us to murder each other for fun?" Stormy couldn't help but ask, incredulous and wary.

He cast a sideways glance first at Stormy, who was somewhere to his left, and then at the rest of the group, still clustered around him. Gale took a small, sharp breath, his fingers tightening around the rifle. A part of him wanted to believe that this was true, that Charlotte really had managed to somehow orchestrate everything, but at the same time, the pieces to the puzzle did not quite fit right.

"How?" he asked her, still holding the rifle. His gaze unintentionally moved towards the red fragment once before meeting Charlotte's again. "And save us from what, exactly?"

Out of the frying pan and into the fire, it would seem, gone from insanity bugs to a blank nothingness to now this, hunters but not hunters, wearing grey clothes and circular pins and uttering a word that sent a chill down his spine. Courier.

It’d been hell of a lot less frightening braving the Circles as a ghost.

Considering his only recent return to life, Shiloh wasn’t quite up to throwing himself in the face of death yet, and instead he sought out Lucky, in the room, and angled himself so he was standing beside the Life hunter, safeguarding him as any friend would.

"Of course silly, none if it was real. This whole O thing, us, it's all a stage act to intimidate and scare." Charlotte flipped her hair just a bit as she spoke. "We're just all actors and we set it up because we needed everyone to see they were destroying themselves. To gain that awareness. The greatest enemy to a Hunter is another Hunter. That's what we're saving you from. Each other. We'll give you shelter and food and you don't have to fight. No more missions or life and death threats. No Caelius. No H. Just what you want. All of you."

The sight of other Couriers had so far kept Lucky frozen exactly where he was, not even drawing his weapon, perhaps in the hope that they couldn't see what didn't move. Or maybe because he couldn't quite register the sudden jump from disembodied spirit to loyalty-torn Hunter/Courier.

Not when other people were watching, anyway.

He shifted a little at the sight of Shiloh's approach, his eyes darting anxiously, filled with a sense of dread over what he had (not) done. The coffee was certainly kicking in now; he felt jittery, and nauseous. It was the sickening feeling of his choices catching up with him.

He considered saying something, even going so far as to mouth a syllable, but instantly thought better of it and returned to his observational silence.

In an instant, she had a direction to look, because there was nothing more important than directing a fixated stare towards the figure. She liked the idea of meeting her predicted end, even if it still felt like she was missing something, but the heart looked so perfect, and red, and...

There was no heart. No shift in reality. Just everything as it had always been. Mimsy glanced towards Lucky before he eyes settled on the fragment. Power. She smiled and lifted her hand as if she might make an attempt to touch it - then froze, interrupted again. The frown faded, and she watched in silence, lowering her arm to tug her sleeve over it.

Their identity was immediately clear, and she'd known for a long time that she had no desire to be involved.

She still didn't, even when they began to explain. Even when Charlotte, skilled at deception, revealed some supposed ruse and offered them some disgusting idea of freedom.

"No."

It was a reflexive response, and the single word came spilling out before she had a chance to consider her options. Her gaze found Lucky again, brow knit with confusion at his apparent anxiety, and she tightened her fingers around her coat sleeve.

"I want none of that. I was very aware of our penchant for destruction, and have no desire to escape it. I would..." Lose myself even further? No longer have a purpose? What was there, if not successes and victories built on the destruction of those beneath her? She stared at Charlotte, and though she looked a little lost, her words were sincere. "I won't go."

Charlotte’s words rang unsettlingly true for Shiloh, who’d just witnessed firsthand just how dangerous another Hunter could be to one’s well being. It didn’t change the fact that the Circles stood to facilitate such internal cannibalism, that they facilitated it. He’d been given a chance to join their ranks before, and he knew at what cost it came. Shiloh knew better than to trust any promises of paradise without sufficient sacrifice in return, and he knew far better than to trust a snake.

“She’s lying, Gale,” he said quietly, though he didn’t move from his place in front of Lucky. He was certain they already knew where his loyalty lay, there was no point hiding it. “Even Caelius isn’t stupid enough to make a promise as transparent as that.”

No, if it had been the Death lead they were facing off against, there wouldn’t be negotiations or talking, and certainly not persuading. Not a preferable course of conversation, but it was honest, at least. He watched the Huntress in front of them carefully, wondering what she was up to. If she was a Courier, then she’d, he concluded as he shot a glance at Lucky, done something very contrary to the nonsense she was spouting to be there.

He didn't trust her - that feeling, at least, was immediate and overwhelming. The cadence of her voice, the sterile, all-too-perfect reply that slipped from her mouth, none of it sounded real. It sounded like a fantasy, a wonderful, open promise; and after all they'd been through so far, after everything that had happened, Gale wanted more than anything for it to be true. He wanted that safe and secure life with Stormy, with his friends, with everyone.

Which was why he didn't trust it one bit.

"Sorry," he said, echoing Mimsy's sentiments. He jerked his head towards her, and towards Shiloh, who had voiced the same suspicions Gale had already. "But I agree with what she said. We knew what we were up against when we signed up in the first place."

And then he leapt towards the red fragment, his hand outstretched to grab it.
