"Not tha' nice, but certainly not worth pity," Rory answered, shifting the carton around in his hand a bit to keep the deformity less noticeable as he ate. "What's a shame, eh?"

Shaking her head in a mock sympathetic fashion, Hailey scooted closer to the boy, looking into his eyes. "Lee's not as innocent as she seems. For as long as I've known her, she never gets serious about any guy. I mean, she pretends to, but she's really only using them for... well, you know." Before he could protest, she went on, looking away as if she were telling a shameful secret. "I know, it sounds crazy, right? She really doesn't seem the type, but I know from experience how dangerous she is. It's like a game to her or something. I really don't understand what she gets out of being with so many boys at once. She's a man eater, Rory. She gets some kind of... sick satisfaction from getting you to fall for her so she can just crush you. I've seen it happen too many times, and... And I don't wanna see it happen to you, too." She certainly sounded like she believed what she was saying, and as ridiculous as her story was, she was at the very least a talented actress.

"Hm," was Rory's initial reaction. "Well, tha's all? Let me tell you what I know o' me girl, yeah? I know she came here married t' our leader's son t' escape an arranged marriage. I know they had th' marriage annulled when he got her set up wi' her own place. Her ex-husband introduced her t' me." He watched the girl, eyes narrowed a bit. "Lee's a good lass. I've met both her parents an', while they donnae seem t' be too approvin' o' me, they donnae seem t' act like Lee's a--how did you put it?--man eater. She's a good lass an' I hae a hard time believin' what you say."

Jerking back with surprise to hear Lee'd almost been married once, and actually was married another time, she collected herself again, shaking her head and looking back at Rory. "She doesn't go around telling people about it, so of course her parents wouldn't know. We were close, like, best friends, and she would brag to me. And, come on, she isn't even an adult and she's already divorced a guy. I think, if anything, that's just more proof. Really, how long have you known her, hm?"

"Couple o' weeks," Rory admitted, shrugging. "An' tha' guy she wis married t' is a good friend o' mine. I trust him. He didnae do anything wi' her. His true wife would've killed him. She hasnae done anythin' wi' me either save a few kisses." The boy decided it really wasn't Hailey's business to know he stayed over just the previous night in Lee's bed. "Why're you tellin' me all this anyway? Thought most outsiders didnae care what happens t' pikeys."

"And I've known her years. I think I know what I'm talking about." Hailey didn't touch on the husband comments, finding it best to stick to what she could argue with. "Like I said, I don't want to see her hurt another guy. That and... I like you." Her words came out confidently, and she smiled up at the boy, eyes glancing back and forth between his. "Lee doesn't deserve someone like you."

Rory eyed the girl. "Doesnae deserve me? Are you daft? She's a rich outsider girl an' I'm didikai. It's th' other way around, girl. By th' grace of gods and sheer luck does she actually deign t' e'en look at me, much less want t' be wi' me. Me own kind doesnae e'en think I'm worth th' trouble and Lee doesnae see me like tha'. She knows me an' she doesnae care about me eyes or the deformities." He held up a hand for Hailey to get a good look at the unnaturally long fingers and extra joints. "How d'you like me now, eh?"

The girl's face softened a bit as she looked over his hands, actually finding him more attractive with the new discovery. "Ummm... why would she not like long fingers?" Smiling up at him mischievously, she looked down, tilting her head. "So that's why you like her? You know, I fit that description, too."

Rory rubbed his temple. The girl was stupid. That had to be it. He could drop anvil-sized clues on her head all day and they'd likely bounce right off. "I care about Lee because she's real. I feel tha' in her." He looked Hailey over. "Why do you want me so bad, eh? Sixteen years o' bein' ignored an' in two weeks I got outsider girls all o'er me. What th hell, eh?"

"You make it sound like a bad thing..." She bit her lip, smiling up at him and giggling. "I don't get to see a lot of cute didikai boys, ya know. My parents don't let me see any." Hailey twirled the ends of her hair, leaning even closer to Rory.

"Plenty o' lads here willin' t' take a chance on an outsider," Rory said, looking down at the carton to get the last fries out and not noticing her moving closer.

Cocking an eyebrow, she smiled, looking down at his hands. "I want you, though." She would have leaned in for a kiss had he not been chewing on fries, and instead sat back, pouting a bit. This didn't seem to be getting her anywhere. "Okay... I was lying earlier, about Lee. You were right... But she's so boring. Don't you want a girl that's just a little more exciting?"

"Ah, well, she's plenty excitin'," Rory said, leaning over to pitch the empty carton in the trash. He looked back at Hailey. "How borin' can she possibly be t' be accepted int' th' clan, eh? Our leader's own son gave her his old vardo t' live in. She ain't afraid o' much, neither, 'cept maybe haen t' watch while I train th' horses." He smiled at the girl. "You seem like a nice lass, Hillary, but I like Lee an' I donnae want t' do anythin' t' upset what I hae wi' her. D'you understand?"

"That's not what I meant by exc-- Hillary?" Genuinely pouting, she folded her arms, looking away from the boy. Sighing, she looked back at him, her smile back on her lips. "Fine. I'll leave you alone if you show me where your home is."

"Well, then, guess I'm just stuck wi' you. I ain't showin' you me home," Rory said, standing up and dusting off his jeans. "Your name's Hillary, ain't it? I wasnae sure I heard it right when w' wis introduced."
