“Excuse me.” Loctho looked and saw a gloved hand on her shoulder, presumably belonging to the owner of the cultured voice behind her.
She turned around far too quickly and winced as her left lekku flew up in the man’s face. “Sorry –” she began, but stopped short as the hand that was on her shoulder whipped up to catch it too fast to see, before it slapped the man across his face. He was humanoid, but didn’t look like any human Loctho had ever seen – at least, not like any live one. Gray hair also, from Loctho’s experience, didn’t normally appear on the heads of humans whose faces were as smooth as this man’s. Hooded eyes – were they yellow? – fixed her with a piercing gaze which would almost have been alluring if his fine-boned features hadn’t been completely ruined by death-gray skin, crisscrossed with tiny veins. “Who are you?” Loctho managed to ask incredulously once she had her voice back.
“Maraz Vax,” he said diplomatically in a clipped voice, replacing Loctho’s lekku on her shoulder. His smile would have been pleasant if not for those eyes, Loctho decided. “And you are?”
“L-Loctho Peylo,” she stammered as Maraz took her hand in both of his, bringing it to chest level.
“Charmed,” he purred, and brushed it briefly with his lips, never breaking eye contact. He hadn’t blinked since he had snatched Loctho’s lekku out of the air. The edge of her mouth twitched. Ignoring her expression, he continued: “You travel with one Sorani Tillin?” At her nod, he explained, “Tell her I wish to speak with her. I’ll be waiting at the Gundark’s Ear – she’ll recognize me.” His unnerving grin curled wider and his eyes narrowed. “I trust I’ll see you again,” he stated as he leaned over Loctho’s shoulder and murmured in her ear, “I always did have a weakness for a lovely woman.”
For a moment, Loctho’s heart fluttered, but it soon seemed to stop entirely and drop into the pit of her stomach. A few years ago, the secondary effect would have had no reason to happen, but now, as Loctho was confronted with this walking corpse with dragon’s eyes, she felt a bit sick. She stood fixed to her spot as Maraz swept away, robe trailing behind him, and vanished into the crowd. As soon as she could move her legs, she dashed off towards the ship.
