It was moments like this that really irritated Grayson Romack. Foolish moves made by his teammates were making him debate whether or not he should reveal himself. At last he decided it would be best to see how Petrachkov felt.

"Petrachkov, do you need any assistance? If not, I'm going to maintain my hidden position." Then all the Ghoster could do was hope he could handle it.

The irritation in Romack's voice was clear. Petrachkov gritted his teeth. s**t, s**t, s**t.

"I've got it for now, I don't see anything more than a shooting gallery going on here. Keep an eye on me, if you would be so kind." The AK repeated again and again as Petrachkov ran down the row outside the grenade.

Although Petrachkov couldn't see it, Grayson nodded habitually. "Will do. Happy hunting." Romack could see that at least someone understood the value of thinking things through before they took action. For now, all he could do was as the soldier had asked. So he waited patiently, waiting for the time to strike.

The head of each zombie in the line cracked open as the targeting computer integrated into the Tyrgani Virtual Interface picked out points of weakness.

The immediate area was basically cleared by the time the chaff settled, giving them perhaps a few minutes to plan and move out before they would be disrupted by the remainder of the hoard.

"So since the chaff didn't quite get as far as I figured, I'm thinking we'll hold it until we're closer to the target. It seems unlikely that silence is our greatest tool now, but hopefully we've got enough force to move faster than they can react. Pullman, you think you can take point while the rest of us keep your back clear? In fact - Pullman, Jacobson, I suggest that you take the front while Romack and I provide sniper support. Once we can actually see the gunners, I'll get a position - perhaps from low foliage in these trees - and we'll just peg them at a distance before they realize we're in range. Then we run like hell. Any better ideas?"

"Learn the ******** range of your own ******** weapons!" Catalena hissed through the headset as the grenade utterly failed its acclaimed task. Who in their right minds even picked up something they did not fully understand? Foolishness! It was a damned good thing he made up for his folly with his shooting.

"It's as good a plan as we have; let's move!" Keeping watchful eyes both physically and mentally, Catalena began to move through the thick trees, putting a bullet through any disinterred sentry close enough to give her difficulties. "Pullman, if there is a contingent of werebeasts, I may be better suited to dealing with them, especially if they can be herded; make your priorities the sages." She considered. They were sorely outnumbered. "But kill whatever suits you, naturally."

Oddly enough, they utterly failed to encounter anything other than zombies. They soon came near a clearing, from which they could sense only a single mana signature.

Grayson Romack agreed silently to the plans made below, and followed just as silently through the overhead foliage, moving from trunk to trunk. Nothing beneath was worthy of being claimed a significant threat, and so he never bothered to reveal himself. But of course, they finally came near the edge of the thick underbrush and a sole signature pinged gently in his mind. Well ********. Just one? Can't be good. After sublimating and coming to rest on one of the mid-level branches, he felt it necessary to voice as much. "Just one ahead it seems. The only reason I can imagine there being just one is because it's some high-ranking schmuck. It might be best if we surround him."

There was a thunderous roar as a single artillery piece in the clearing fired, then began an automated reloading sequences. A dull pair of mana signatures - zombies - seemed to be working the artillery, while the single strong signature - the mage - stood in the middle of that area.

"I know the '******** range' of my '******** weapons'," Petrachkov grunted as they moved onward. "I just didn't realize the zombies were gonna, y'know, keep standing."

Upon the approach to the clearing, Petrachkov nodded slowly. "Mmkay, so this is working out a bit too well. I like the idea of the demonologist and the psionic sticking together, or rather I like better the idea of having a Ghoster to ensure my safety while I peg whoever I'm gonna peg with the rifle. I'm going up this tree here now and I'm gonna see if I can get a good angle from up there with the long rifle. So, uh, just gimme a minute, and we'll see what we've got."

Petrachkov began to ascend the tree, the TVI guiding his hands where he could find handholds and telling him where to place climbing hooks where he could not. The ascent was going quite well, and would continue to so far as nothing went wrong, which it almost assuredly would.

"Second mana signature identified in the area," Cholos chimed in over their headsets. "We can't pin it down; it's unusually elusive. I'm going to get airborne, actually, but I'll stay nearby. This is strange. I just hope that isn't an Archsage in the clearing..."

The single mana source in the clearing turned away from them and walked over to the artillery piece, stopping on the other side, the enormous device blocking their line of sight.

Well, that was inconvenient.

"Okay, so second mana source. I'm still thinking I'll try to peg the operator here with the long rifle, and perhaps Romack and Pullman can cover us while we take care of that. Any other thoughts?"

Petrachkov's breathing grew slightly heavier as he labored to climb the tree.

Romack came to solidity just a few branches above and out of Petrachkov's path. "We've been lucky this far," he muttered, "But I think this is where the line is drawn. The odds say that is an Archsage or something just as strong. The only other possibility is this entire setup is a distraction for something else." He glanced over his shoulder at the soldier in his armor, steadily making his way up the rather sturdy tree. "How much longer will it be before you're set? I don't think they'll let us monkey about for much longer."
PostPosted: Sat Sep 12, 2009 11:07 am

"Well, you tell me," Petrachkov replied. "Once I'm in the branches, it's easy. Computer's'll guide me swinging through branches better than any monkey could do it, it's just the trunk that's hard gettin' up." Petrachkov laid hold of a thick branch and clambered up on to it. "Okay, lessee..." he muttered, waiting for a second for the computers to tell him where he wanted to go. Once that was done, he set off through the canopy towards the clearing, looking for a branch on which to climb out. "Say, do I have an angle on that mana source or am I gonna have to move?"

"The artillery is between us and the standing target," Catalena informed Petrachkov. "If you want a shot, you will either have to go around, or one of us will have to draw it out. As for the other, if our support can't pin down a location, I likely cannot, either." She was trying to follow it, but it failed to stay in one place for very long at a time. How frustrating.

"If someone will shield me, I can attempt to draw their attention. I have something that may distract the elusive signature long enough for one of you others to get a bead on it." She fingered the bracelet on her wrist as she waited behind a tree for a response.
