Ruth wandered up the hall, bag slung over her shoulder, and holding a suitcase in her right hand. Her left clutched a copy of The Sonnets of William Shakespeare, which was well worn and loved.
She eventually came to a stop outside of the headmasters office and sighed, tucking some honey-colored fringe behind an ear where it had escaped from her headband. She'd heard about the murder, and strangely enough, it didn't bother her other than her empathy for the deceased person and her loved ones if she had any. It was strange the school wasn't closed, but perhaps they were so dedicated to educating their students that they couldn't. That was good. Ruth really had nowhere else to go; this was her last resort and chance at the semblance of a better life.
She raised one slightly trembling fist to the door and knocked twice, before quickly stepping back and adjusting her bag. Her purple sweater was a bit big for her and old, her jeans were baggy and her boots were scuffed, but she hoped both the Headmaster and her future peers could see through that here.

Kaien awoke with a start. He'd been deeply involved with his paperwork and had apparently fallen asleep on...he read the paper's header Dispersal Order for personal effects of Deceased. Groaning inwardly, he straighened his glasses before examining the sound that had startled him awake in the first place.
A student? really? it must be a human applicant because he'd not allowed any passage through the Gateway...not after the incident. He did his best to assume a 'I've not been sleeping' voice before calling out. "Please come in."

' Alright, Ruthie, you can do this. Don't fret.'
The little blond bobbed her head once to herself before stuffing the book of sonnets away into her bag and tentatively opening the door. She poked her head in modestly before easing her way into the room, looking about with an appreciative eye.
She dipped her head in greeting, flushing self consciously as was her wont.
" Good morning sir..uh.." She reached into her shoulder bag to dig out her slightly crumpled letter, coming forward to place it on his desk.
" I hope it's all in order." It was clear this speaking up was a bit difficult for her from the soft tone of her voice.

She spoke unusually formally for someone as young as she was. This surprised him, but he made no comment as he read through the letter. True enough, he'd sent it out. He was used to dealing with teenagers who were probably less assertive than most of their peers - his Academy had a habit of attracting that type. Perhaps it was also the power of the Gateway that called to them. Their special personality types would make it easy for them to subconsciously become attuned with the power flowing through Grove. He decided to think more on this later as he filed away her paperwork.
"Ruth, is it? I'm Kaien Sordeau, headmaster here...but you probably knew that." He smiled warmly, admitting to his own superfluous speech. Before Anna had come to take care of incoming students, he had developed a bit of a script. That was the only way to cope with the sheer volume of new students. With Ruth he was finding himself oddly out of practice.
"So, how was your journey? Good I hope." He steadily relaxed his own body, leaning back into his chair and beginning to use more informal words. Hopefully she would relax also.

Ruth smiled shyly, dipping her head again.
" Yes sir, thank you. I read the way here, that was pleasant. I do not usually get the chance to read for so long." She glimpsed the headline on the desk, but made no comment on it.
" And I hope you've had a good nap this morning." There was a small smile on her lips as the 'I so wasn't asleep' voice he had used had not escaped her notice.
" Is there anything in particular I need to know?"

Evidently he hadn't done as good of a job as he had thought at hiding his previous attempt at sleep. "Ah, well we do have several rules for our hu-Grove Academy students." Let her figure it out later, Kaien he told himself as he quickly corrected the slip. A bit of discovery and adventure will do her good.
"We ask that you keep to your own dorm - which will be Maple - and that you don't go bothering the boys in Oak or the Keystone dorm. The Gatekeeper's house is off-limits with no exceptions made. As for uniforms..." He wrote the address of the shop in Moline that he had arranged to carry the student's uniforms. "You should go here as soon as possible. Other than that, your duty is to learn and better yourself. After all, we can all do with a little of that."

Ruth smiled and nodded, accepting this information quietly. She really only asked questions when she felt they were necessary, and in this case she figured she would find out the truth of it all sooner or later without really having to look. She had abysmal luck, and things had a tendency to just smack her in the face. She accepted the piece of paper from the headmaster with a smile.
" Alright, thank you. Is there anything else I need to know or keep away from, sir?" Her voice retained its soft, respectful tone despite the playful jibe she had thrown earlier, which was somewhat against her normal character. Odd. It seemed this place was making her open up already.

 "Headmaster!" MaryAnne gasped as she practically flung open the door to his office, towing in the dark haired boy by the wrist.
"Please, excuse the interruption but it's urgent," her wide, blue eyes flashed to the girl across from the Headmaster and she tucked her wings in tight, the motion one she hoped the dark angel beside her would mimic. Her eyes then flashed back to the Headmaster, searching for any sign that he knew what was going on with the boy beside her; she still didn't even know his name.

Damien quickly mimicked MaryAnne, thinking that it would be important, seeing as how quickly she had done it herself when entering the room. He quietly looked around the room, noting two people-a man and a woman-sitting at the desk, ignoring the fact that MaryAnne still had a grip on his wrist, before looking around the room in a slightly confused and awed gaze.

Kaien furrowed his brow. He remembered that the two new angels, MaryAnne and Damien, had been removed to the Keystone dorm after the Ball's incident. He remembered that Damien had fainted in the aftermath. He looked over to where Ruth sat, no doubt frightened by the previous incident.
"MaryAnne, though I appreciate your enthusiasm, I need one more moment with Ruth here before I can fully give you my attention. If you wouldn't mind waiting just outside the door..." he trailed off, thinking that since it was obvious neither of the angels was injured or dying, they would be able to hold out for one more moment while he finished settling in the new student.
"Unless Ms. Ruth has no further questions? I believe I've given you your Dorm...Maple...just look for your name on the door."
