Eh... well, Ganguro is just the most commonly used name of the entire group of all the different types of gal.. I think the extreme look is called Yamanba? But I don't remember what is what. There's ganguro, gonguro?... and... more... I don't.. remember.... Brain... frying....
Wikipedia says: "The term yamanba derives from Yama-uba, the name of a mountain hag in Japanese folklore whom the fashion is thought to resemble"
That makes me giggle.
The fashion... It's different. I would NEVER wear it, but after the initial shock, it's just another branch of Japanese fashion to me. Like decora. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I don't hate it.

I think that some Ganguro are pretty, but to be honest I really don't pay much attention to the fashion. I'm used to seeing women with extreme tans and blonde hair, I live in California.

Ganguro fascinate me almost like watching an animal documentary.I mean,we get girls who fake tan here, but ganguros go to whole new extremes with everything else. And it goes so against traditional japanese beauty I almost respect them for that.So I don't dislike it.I just would NEVER in my life do that. Not much of them left anymore anyway, just regular fake n' bake girls.

Ganguro and Yamanba girls are extreme rebels. The Ganguro, and a slightly more extreme form only around for a couple years, Gonguro, were dying their hair and tanning to rebel from their parents. They usually wanted nothing to do with Japanese culture, so they turned to the Valley Girls as inspiration.

Ze Winged Kitty Cat Ganguro and Yamanba girls are extreme rebels. The Ganguro, and a slightly more extreme form only around for a couple years, G onguro, were dying their hair and tanning to rebel from their parents. They usually wanted nothing to do with Japanese culture, so they turned to the Valley Girls as inspiration. Really? But Valley Girls are 'parent-money-munchers', as I like to call them. Or at least all the ones I know are.

They lived on not very much, and were semi-homeless. They would leave home if they got mad at their parents, go clubbing, and come back in a week. Just to escape normal Japan. Extremeists. But the real money munchers are Gyarus. If they get a stain on a shirt, they get $500 from theit dad for a new one. Of go on "paid dates" in extreme cases.

Well, even if I don't like their style, O-gals don't seem that bad to me. The gyarus, on the other hand, don't sound very lovely. (>.<)

Okay, I've read it so many times that I'm a bit concerned.
I live in California -San Diego, in fact- and I've never seen such extreme tans, at least not on normal looking humans. I've seen Ganguro girls in Harajuku, and it is much, much, MUCH more extreme than any tan I've seen (again, on normal, attractive humans... I see bums with dark tans like that though).
Despite how my post sounds, I like Ganguro. Like most people have said on this thread, it is not for me, but I think the deep tans with white/light makeup is an interesting look. Quite refreshing, actually.
Still shocked me when I first saw it, and I am Californian.

I still like to look at it once in a while. XD

I know that most use makeup to get that effect, but I wonder just how dark the average Japanese's skin can go. Kind of weird questing/musing... oh well.
