'Growth all you want, boosts are meaningless if you can't land a hit,' Riza thought darkly. She gazed coldly across the battlefield at the Ivysaur, clearly not caring just how much Erika planned on raising its stats. 'Do it, Eris,' she thought shifting her weight and crossing her arms over her chest. If she hadn't seemed defiant before she certainly did now. As if able to hear her trainer's thoughts (and maybe she did, as she did seem to possess limited psychic abilities after all) the Quilava burst through the ground in a cascade of dirt and slammed herself into the Ivysaur, giving a sharp cry as she did so. Riza smiled and said nothing more. Her little Eris was definitely no pushover, and she made a mental note to send Keegan's parents a thank you note or flowers or something in order to show her appreciation for them giving her such a great little Pokemon.

Roscoe's teeth were grit and he took a step back as bolts of electricity flared off in all directions from the Electabuzz's attack. His Scizor seemed to have the advantage right now, but that Electabuzz was tougher than he'd predicted. He also wasn't a fool, he knew well enough that the electric-type's Static could kick in at any minute and paralyze his Pokemon and then they'd be at a real disadvantage. "Scizor! Back off and use Focus Energy!" It was time to regroup and think of a different way to approach their opponent. The Pincer Pokemon sneered at Kord as it relinquished its hold and jumped back, using its wings to give itself a bit of extra distance. It then began to focus its mind, its reddish body glowing a little as a result.

Katie frowned as she saw the Scizor back off. Apparently this Roscoe moron wasn't such a moron after all. She'd been counting on Kord's Static to slow his opponent, but that wouldn't be the case now. The orange haired girl still smiled, however, as she gave her next command. "Wanna run away? Fine by me. Kord, Thunder Wave!" The Electabuzz stomped the ground a few times, a blanket of static electricity covering his whole body before he directed it at the Scizor. Being too preoccupied with its Focus Energy, the Scizor couldn't do a thing and it gave a cry as its body locked up, feeling heavy and sluggish.

The Staravia and Golbat, meanwhile, continued their aerial fight with Reggie calling out for the large bat Pokemon to use Bite. Noa's shriek of pain as the bat's fangs sunk into her drew Katie's attention back to her other Pokemon and she grit her teeth. "Noa, use Double Team," she shouted. The brownish Staravia gave a second cry and her body flashed as she seemed to suddenly fly off in all directions. 'Maybe that Golbat ought to get a taste of Kord's Thunder Wave next,' Katie thought, a wicked smile spreading across her face.

Nothing else really needed to be said just then so Brock just watched, a grin of pride appearing on his face as the gym's floor began to shake violently. 'Here we go,' the gym leader thought, bracing himself as the huge rock snake burst out of the ground and descended upon the Nidorina. Brock stared hard into the cloud of dust and dirt that had sprayed up, wondering how the poison-type would fare and what Pokemon Hayley would send out in its place if it were to fall.

The Memory Experiment

The memory institute was a modest three story building. It seemed to be built on the premises of some long closed private school. A red brick wall surrounded the similarly constructed building. Wrought iron spikes protruded from the top of the wall and a gate, also of iron, barred the trios way. Claire waited as Moti went over to an intercom and talked with someone on the other side of the gate. After a few moments the gate swung open with the whirring of an electric motor. As the group walked up the pathway a man in a white lab coat came out of the teal colored double-doors that rested in the center of the building.

“Velcome, my name is Doktor Luria. Moti has already arranged for you to tour our facility. Unfortunately ve are very busy today. Vone of our doktors makes a big breakthrough today vut, I show you to your rooms in the vest ving of the building. Follow me.”

With that, Doctor Luria turned around quickly and began briskly walking back into the building. Claire would have loved to ask questions, but it seemed the doctor was in a hurry. The blonde girl imagined that Rajasi appreciated the Doctor’s brisk demeanor. On the bright side, their big discovery did give the trio plenty of time to do their mission.

As the crew made their way through the building they saw several more scientists, grad students, and undergrads moving about. It seemed that most of the research was conducted in the east wing. Two flight of stairs later, the doctor had shown them to their corner of the old dormitory that was still apparently used for the very same purpose.

The Steel Singer

Mawile frowned as her target moved behind a rather tall brick wall. There were plenty of trees to use to help her get over from the outside, but getting out stealthily wouldn’t be as viable. Of course, she could just break the wall with one of her attacks. Yeah, that plan would work out just fine in the worst case scenario where she wasn’t sneaking off before anyone could tell the egg was gone. Even the hardiest Pokemon would sleep through a small racket like a breaking brick wall after hearing her special song.

Mawile cradled her egg. It was nice and warm in her false jaws, but it didn’t seem to be wiggling as much as it had before. Somehow it the egg knew when she was in range of the other egg and it became more active. Although Mawile didn’t think the two eggs were actually related pokemon, they did have some kind of mystical connection to each other. Just another reason to make sure the eggs were reunited in her care.

Mawile scurried up the nearest tree. She could see her target following another human in a white coat. It’d be harder to track him inside the building, then again she did have the wiggly “dowsing” egg. She’d have to strike soon. There was no telling how long they would stay nearby. Mawile knew the humans could disappear in an instant with their flying type slaves (if they had any) or in various metal contraptions.

Needless to say, Georgia was more than a little intrigued to watch the strange Exeggcute in action. She'd never seen one in person before so the match was quite thrilling, even if it wasn't eggs-actly bursting with action (yeah, I went there). Carnivine didn't appear to care that it was under attack, its vines still curled snuggly around the seeds it held within its clutches. Georgia pouted, brushing the auburn hair from her face. "C'mon, Carnivine! You can't just sit there all day and sleep! Exeggcute is not your stuffie for cuddling!" The trainer stomped her foot, but to no avail - Carnivine remained sound asleep, at least for the time being.

The smoke had mostly lifted by now so Erika was treated to a clear view of the Quilava bursting from the ground and inflicting even more damage on her poor, battered Ivysaur. The Seed Pokemon stood strong, however, looking weakened but definitely refusing to give in. His body had taken on a bright, green glow as well, signaling that his Overgrow ability was now active and the Grass-type was on his last legs. The dark-haired Gym Leader's eyes narrowed. "Ivysaur, Razor Leaf," she called, only then noticing the small, unfamiliar Pokemon at Riza's side. Ivysaur gave a roar, his body glowing as he shot off a larger, more powerful barrage of Razor Leaves than before. He knew he was just about spent, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to try his hardest for Erika!

Jaeshan had reached up to fidget with his new hat, trying to get some of his unruly blond hair to stay down when Lisa's question hit him, and he froze, feeling a strange, painful pang of both guilt and longing shoot through his chest. "Uh, no," he said, having sat back down in his seat after a few moments of awkward silence. "I mean, the thought crossed my mind, but, what would I even say to them? Hey, you seem like really nice people! Terribly sorry I don't remember you! I'm sure you were great parents, and I bet there are all kinds of good memories just locked away in some hidden vault deep within my subconscious, but other than that, you guys are like, total strangers to me! Sorry for the inconvenience!" He laughed ruefully, and shook his head, not caring that his cheeks were streaked with tears. "Yeah, I guess you can say I've considered it," he said, standing up. "But I don't really think that's fair to them. I mean, yeah, sure, I'm alive and all that, and I'm sure everyone thinks they deserve to know that, but let's face it - in reality, I'm still lost to them. When - no, if - I get my memory back, then I'll set things right, but until then, they're better off just not knowing." His voice had cracked a few times as he spoke, and he forced a weak smile as he turned left the cafeteria, having had enough of crying in front of people for now.

Again Lisa listened with rapt attention, though she did not expect what she thought was a seemingly-harmless question to provoke such a response from the blond. She tried to interrupt him, but he didn't seem to notice. Before long, tears were streaming down the blue-haired girl's cheeks as well. She wanted so much to help him, but it seemed like everything she was doing for him had the opposite effect. That, and she knew that finding out what happened to Jade had probably trumped his amnesia, at least for now. She closed her eyes and lowered her head as he left her alone in the cafeteria, a shaky sigh escaping her. "I'm sorry, Jae," she whispered to no one, "but... they already know."

Lucky the Dunsparce was both looking and feeling a whole lot better as the feathers floated down around him. "Lucky Ancient Power." Norman called out watching his pokemon with critical eyes. The normal type might still hit itself and the fact that it was still new to gym leader battles were causing the gym leader to be a bit more critical of the pokemon then he would be of his others. Still it seemed that Lucky got lucky a second time as a look of concentration appeared on the land snakes face as a bunch of rocks started to float around it before speeding off towards the sleeping Kangaskhan.

It seemed that Kasiya was still off in lala land for the most part. Based on the stars in her eyes, she was more than likely daydreaming about some grand future battle or performance. While it was super cute, Mike figured it was time to kick the battle up a notch. Can't have her mentally dozing off in a real fight now can we?

"Vesuvius! Let's give Digger a little something to wake him up! He seems a bit sleepy. Flamethrower!" Bam! But seriously. The Sandslash's apathy towards the match was a bit annoying.

Vesuvius hit the ground, spinning a few more times before popping out of his shell and planting his feet and breathing in. The crags on his back began to glow, and the flames that shot from his mouth were accompanied by a blast of white smoke from the Torkoal's large pores.

That'll give him something to react to.

"Crap we're in trouble. Jill let's focus the charmander." Whispered Jack. His girl nodded and they yelled out their attacks. "Sandshrew poison sting! Meowth use bite!" They cried out together pointing at the Charmander. Gigas gave a bit of a squeak as the two pokemon charged him. He jumped out of the way of the poison sting, but the Meowth bite down on his arm causing him to cry out and flail around as the normal type held on for dear life.

"Hang on Gigas! We've got them on the ropes!" He hoped. It could still go either way, but Mateus was still unharmed. "Mateus use Confusion on the Sandshrew!" Obliging the ground type glowed with a strange light before it was lifted into the air, then slammed down hard into the ground.

"Gigas stop flailing around and smack it with your tail!" Growling his approval Gigas smacked the cat in the face with his burning tail causing it to yowl and let go. It seemed the winners would be decided soon since the other team was looking rather haggard now.

Keegan continued to watch silently, his face void of emotion as he watched the Dunsparce's Roost heal a chunk of its health. Moeder dozed on peacefully, unaware of anything going on around her. The redhead finally pulled out his PokeDex and looked over the Dunsparce's entry, gazing up as the odd, pink Pokemon launched an Ancientpower on Norman's command. Keegan narrowed his eyes, but continued to say nothing as the rocks smashed into his still-sleeping Kangaskhan. Wake up, Moeder, he thought, still very much wishing for a cigarette. It's time to take this annoying Pokemon out.

The rest of the odd little group's lunch passed by quite quickly, after which Juliet found herself to be forbidden from helping with any of the cleanup. Instead, she played out in the yard with Lottie, Claire and her Panpour. It didn't take very long for the younger girl to attach herself to Juliet's side. The blonde trainer watched fondly as her Riolu engaged in a friendly game of hide-and-seek with the Water-type, but the more she observed, the more suspicious Juliet became that Lottie was using her ability to sense Aura to give her an unfair advantage in the game.

"Are you and Charlotte gonna go and win all the gym badges?" Claire asked quietly, looking on as her Panpour scrambled up the playground equipment, Juliet's Riolu in hot pursuit.

Juliet thought for a few moments before answering. "I suppose we're going to have to if we want to get into the Unova League," she said, smiling as the two young Pokémon chased each other around the swing set. "My mother was a formidable trainer in her younger days and made it to the top four twice. My oldest brother entered last year, but he lost in the first round after the qualifiers. I think it'd be pretty awesome to get all those badges and enter, and make it farther than they did. It won't be easy but, yeah. It's totally something I want to do."

Claire had been looking up at the older girl, the stars mirrored in her large eyes as Juliet spoke. She adjusted her glasses, and nodded in agreement. "That sounds really awesome, Juliet! I bet you guys will win it all for sure."

Juliet smiled down at the smaller girl. "I sure hope so. What about you, Claire? What do you want to do when you're old enough to set out on your own?"

The little girl's face scrunched up in thought, and she looked over at her Pokémon. "Someday, I want to go on a journey with Panpour and travel to places like Kanto and Johto and meet all kinds of new Pokémon and people. I want to learn everything I can about as many Pokémon as possible, and I wanna make new friends, too." Now grinning broadly, Claire looked up at Juliet again. "Are you going to make some new friends too, Juliet? Are you going to catch some new Pokémon?"
PostPosted: Wed Jul 24, 2013 7:22 am

That question didn't require much thought to answer, and Juliet nodded quickly. "I certainly hope so. Lottie's tough and all, but I'm not sure she can do it all by herself. Battles are easier if you have more Pokémon, and different types, too." At the mention of her name, the Riolu's ears had perked up and she darted over to her Trainer's side, the blue Water-type right on her heels. "I don't know what kind of Pokémon we'll add to our little team, but when the time comes, we'll be ready."

Claire petted the odd tuft of hair sticking out of the top of her Panpour's head, apparently satisfied with the older girl's answer for now. "Um, this might be a lot to ask, but…" Claire trailed off, her gaze drifting between Lottie and Panpour, "would you and Charlotte have a practice battle with Panpour and me? I'm not old enough to be a trainer yet, but I've watched Jack and Brett batting before and Annie has taught me a lot about Panpour's attacks. If you don't want to, that's okay, but I'd really, really, really like to see how Lottie battles! Please, Juliet, please?"

The small girl's blue eyes were impossibly wide behind her glasses, and Juliet just knew that there was no way that she could say no to her. She looked down at her Riolu, who gave an eager nod in return, and she smiled. "Of course, Claire. Charlotte and I would love to have a practice battle with you."

The smile that appeared on the young girl's face was unparalleled, but true to her nature she kept herself fairly calm and reserved as she motioned for Juliet to follow her. "Thank you, thank you!" she said as she led the way, stopping to point out the mid-sized battlefield that lay on the far side of the property. Juliet knew that she shouldn't be surprised by the fact that there was a battlefield here, given that the majority of trainers started out at a young age and that as a Daycare for both children and Pokémon, it was only natural that they'd have a place for them to work out and get some exercise. As the two girls took their places on opposite ends of the field, Juliet noticed that Jack and Brett had been freed from their cleaning duties and were hurrying toward them, their Pansear and Pansage following along close behind.

"Oh, awesome, we're gonna get to see Lottie battle!" Brett said excitedly.

"Cool, I'll be the ref!" Jack announced, positioning himself midfield. "This is gonna be good!"

After Ben reached the routes, he spent the entire afternoon training both his Pidgey and his Pikachu, pushing them to their limits in an effort to make them even stronger for his next Gym match. Things had been going really well, as his Pikachu was looking stronger than ever, and his Pidgey had mastered his Quick Attack - something that he was sure would prove useful against Falkner. As Ben sat, hot and tired beside his weary and exhausted Pokemon, he could only smile, knowing that this sort of progress and effort were what Pokemon training was all about. It felt good to work this hard, and hopefully, he would be rewarded for it.

Picking his Pokemon up in both arms, he squeezed them in a tight hug and nuzzled them. "You guys are the greatest.. No way are we gonna lose next time! We're gonna wipe that cool look off Falkner's face!" He grinned with a new burst of enthusiasm and confidence, standing up and running back toward the PokeCenter. He'd have to make sure his Pokemon got plenty of rest after that hard workout - Falkner was coming up soon! And this time, he would be walking away with the Zephyr Badge!

It was time to finish things. Jack and Jill had one last trick to play. "Sandshrew use Defense Curl! Meowth roll him towards the Charmander and bowl him over!" Obliging their trainers Sandshrew rolled up as Meowth pushed him along at startling speeds toward Gigas. A hit from that combo would surely hurt, but Kressen wasn't going to let that happen.

"Mateus use String Shot, Gigas use Ember!" The string shot hit the sandshrew binding it in its balled up form and caused the Meowths paws to get stuck to its partner. Then ember hit igniting the web and burning the two pokemon in a glorious combo move. After the blaze went down Sandshrew and Meowth lay on the ground looking singed and obviously down for the count. Jack and Jill sighed and recalled their pokemon.

"Nice work you two! That was an awesome first double battle. Thanks for the match guys." He recalled his team and offered the defeated couple a wave. They offered one back, but soon returned to their picnic as he hit the road once more.

It had probably been about seven or eight months since Jasper had last seen these three, and as he finally turned around to look at them, he could tell they were pleased to see him, though he could easily guess that it was not for pleasant reasons. "Oh, hey fellas, what's up?" he asked casually, as though he'd only just noticed them.

Jasper's cursory greeting only caused the leader of the three, a greasy-haired youth with dark, beady eyes, to curl his lip in a contemptuous sneer and in a slow motion, he carefully placed his weather-beaten fedora back on his head. The two others flanking him mirrored his unpleasant expression, though the lad on his left was built like a Rhydon (minus the big, scary drill-horn, of course) and was probably just as clever as one, to boot. "Hey yerself, Jasper; ya self-serving, backstabbing, egocentric piece o' s**t."

"Nice to see you, too, Jonas," Jasper replied amicably, showing no signs that the petty name-calling had bothered him. The other two chuckled and he decided to take a precautionary step back, only to have the triad step forward just as quickly. He felt a tug on his hair as Ditto's grip had tightened reflexively, and he nonchalantly reached up to reassure the Imitation Pokemon by giving him a scratch behind the ears. "And to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?"

Jonas' beady eyes narrowed, and he glanced from side to side at the others surrounding him. Jasper knew the both of them as well; the solid, dimwitted boy was known to Jasper only as Femur (for his love of breaking them, of course) while the other, a skinny beanpole of a boy with stringy black hair and angular features was Paul. Neither of them were ever very far from Jonah's side; Femur for obvious reasons, Paul, well, not so much. The four had worked together in the past (you could even go so far as to call them a gang of sorts), using their combined "talents" to run all sorts of scams and con ops. For the most part, the little clique had been quite successful, at least until Jasper had grown disenchanted with the whole being a "team player" thing, and he surmised that this little meeting probably had something to do with that. His suspicions would be quickly confirmed. "You and I, brotha, well, we have some unfinished business. You dig?"

Despite Tisyphone's new-found bravery and fierceness, all the courage in the world couldn't have prepared her for the Onix's brutal assault. The Nidorina was sent for a ride by the super-effective strike, and she was already completely out of it by the time she hit the ground. Hayley's lower lip trembled a bit as she recalled the fainted poison type, wondering if perhaps this massive opponent would be too much for young Ivy. She closed her eyes and exhaled slowly; no, that kind of thinking just wouldn't do!

When the brunette's green eyes opened again, she'd banished her fears, and now her second and final Pokeball went spiraling onto the field. "C'mon, Ivy! You're the closer! It's the bottom of the fourth and we're down to our last out! We need a touchdown!" Okay, so perhaps Hayley should lay off the sports metaphors, but as the Snivy made her appearance, both trainer and Pokemon had never looked so determined in all of their relatively young lives so far. "Ivy, give 'em your very best Glare!" Hayley shouted with great zeal. Ivy would not disappoint her trainer; the smaller, snakelike Pokemon glared up at the much, much larger one with a seething, hate-filled stare, eyes gleaming with a red, luminous hue.

Again Riza found herself to be feeling very disappointed that Erika's Ivysaur was still able to fight, but very soon, she would be putting an end to that, and she smiled coldly. "Alright, it's time to take the first round," Riza said as she looked down at Selena, who nodded in agreement. "Rush into it, Eris! Flame Wheel!" The Quilava seemed to agree as well, the flames on her head and tail roaring to live as she once again ran forward, whole body becoming covered in scorching fire. She felt the sting of the Razor Leaves as they cut into her, only some of them were burned away as it seemed like the Ivysaur had found some sort of last minute strength. The Quilava gave a loud cry as she hurtled toward her target, wanting nothing more than to reduce it to a pile of ashes and make Riza happy again.

"C'mon, Scizor! You've still got this! Get that overgrown spark plug with your Slash attack!" Roscoe shouted, though now Katie could hear the worry in his voice. Weakly, the paralyzed Scizor got to its feet, eyes narrowed at Kord with what could only be described as hate. It then lunged forward, but its agility had been severely hampered and Kord had no trouble jumping out of the way. The Electabuzz, seeing that his trainer was now focused on Noa, decided to take the initiative and slam his electrified fist into the steel and bug-type's back, sending it face first onto the dusty, cement ground.

Noa and her many copies had succeeded at confusing Reggie and his Golbat. Reggie had called for an Air Cutter attack and the large, blue bat's wings sent wickedly curved blades of energy spiraling through the air, eliminating two of Noa's clones. This had given the real Noa time to circle around, and on Katie's command, flew up high into the rafters as she prepared to use her newly learned Fly technique. "Time to show these guys that they picked on the wrong girl," the orange haired girl chuckled, pointing at the bat Pokemon. "Get 'im, Noa!" The Staravia gave a screech and dove down from the ceiling, driving her sharp beak and claws into the Golbat from behind and sending it to the floor, as well. Both the Scizor and Golbat got back up again, still looking eager to fight and not at all happy.

"You're starting to make me angry, you little brat," Roscoe growled through grit teeth.

"Good!" Katie shouted back. "Maybe that means you'll actually start putting up a REAL fight!"
* * * * *
It wasn't surprising to Brock when he saw the Nidorina get recalled, as she was no longer able to battle after taking a solid hit from his Onix, and the gym leader leaned back a bit, arms still folded across his broad chest as he awaited the appearance of Hayley's last Pokemon. Brock liked to consider himself to be fairly well versed in Pokemon knowledge, as he did plan to become one of the best breeders the Pokemon world had ever seen, but even he didn't know what the strange, green creature was that Hayley sent out in place of her Nidorina. Its tail was leaf shaped so he could guess it was a grass-type, and Hayley already seemed to have a strategy in mind as she called for a Glare. There wasn't much he could do to stop it and Onix found himself to be shrinking back in fear from the cold stare the Snivy was giving him. Brock frowned, being paralyzed would make this match that much tougher, especially if that Pokemon was a grass-type, which he was sure it was. "Rock Tomb, Onix!" Brock yelled, but all his massive Pokemon could do was remain perfectly still, the segmented portions of his body creaking as he tried to follow through with his master's orders. It was no good, it looked like Onix would be fully paralyzed for this round.

A feeling of nervousness overcame Juliet now that their little practice match had garnered a bit of attention, and as the blonde Trainer looked over, she saw that even Annie had stepped outside to see what was going on as well. Juliet looked back over at Lottie, and then across to Panpour. Neither of the Pokémon seemed to look worried or nervous in any way, and even little Claire was looking very determined. It'll be fine, Juliet thought, trying to dismiss her pre-battle jitters. We battled that Sewaddle earlier and did well, and even our practice matches against the boys' Pokémon always went pretty well. We got this.

"Hey Juliet, what are you waiting for – Christmas, or New Years? Get on with it, already!" Brett shouted from the sidelines.

Juliet huffed shot him a heated glare in return. That settled it; she wasn't going to let her nerves get the best of her any longer. After all, it was no different than taking the opening faceoff for the first game of the season. "Go ahead, Claire, you can have the first move," she called out, openly ignoring Brett now.

"O-okay, if you're sure," Claire answered, straightening up. "Let's do our best, okay, Panpour?"

"Paaan!" the Water-type called cheerfully.

"Start with Water Gun!" the small girl called out. The Spray Pokémon gave another cry and jumped, flipping over backwards as its cheeks puffed out, and upon landing, spat out a strong jet of water toward the Riolu.

What a Water Gun, Juliet thought, but it wasn't time to stand around and admire her opponent's attacks. "Lottie, dodge it," Juliet called, and the Riolu didn't hesitate to spring into action. Lottie darted off to the side, tucking into a roll just in time to evade Panpour's Water Gun. She felt a few drops of water landing on her as she popped up on her feet, and she spun around, feet spread apart and her arms held out as she took up a battle stance, one she'd learned from her mother. "Nice dodge, Lottie, now it's time to go on the offensive! Quick Attack!"
