Flash_flood Hi, I just joined the guild, and I thought I'd post here. I play flute in concert band, and piccolo in marching band, 4th year playing. Nice to see other people in the section. Welcome to the guild! =3 My school does the same thing with the flute=concert band and picc=marching band. I'm glad we have piccs. You can't hear the flutes too well over the rest of our band.

Hey all! I just joined! I've played piccolo for 3 years, Flute for 5 years. I played French horn last year, and I'm going to play trombone next marching season. But I'm still a flute freak through and through.

All right, some of the older members might remember how last year I was REALLY frustrated with my flute section and how eventually I just switched to tenor sax full-time because I couldn't handle dealing with them anymore, especially in sectionals. Well, we just had our first sectional yesterday (well, second actually, but the first one we had I went with the saxes) and I had to go with the flutes because all we were working on was the 1812 Overture and I play flute for that song. So I was totally dreading it, like, "Oh no this is gonna be a nightmare." But guess what?
I made it through the sectional without wanting to kill a single person. And apparently I am back in charge; we got in there and I had people telling me to count us off. Go figure! (For anyone who doesn't know, our band is very informal and doesn't really have section leaders, but there's generally one person in each section who everyone pretty much agrees is in charge. Usually it's one of the older players, but I've been "section leader" since I was a sophomore, so it's not too important.)
But yeah. 1812 Overture is death to flutes. >>;; Hardly any rest, and it's all like 16th run things and crazy stuff. And the thing is, it wouldn't really be THAT bad, but it's 20 minutes long. ;_;

LegolasGreenleaf Success!!! blaugh page 2 sorry it's small, but hey! I got it! *is proud of herself* HOMIGOZ0R I LOVE YOU! ::Huggle!:: I can't thank you enough for that! And thank you for putting forth such an effort as well, it's touching. =)
Go flutes! (Except those icky preppy ones who can't even reach a C coughcoughAmandacoughcough.) As for the 1812 Overture thing...I've only heard the song once, in music class during the seventh grade. It sounded absolutely amazing but killer, and I'm glad you got through it. ^_^ I can imagine it was a pain to play, though, being twenty minutes long...

HE said that more than one piccolo on the field would cause horrible intonation We have 15 flutes + 1 piccolo and we can not stay in tune. I'm getting better at keeping my piccolo in tune, so maybe next year I can play my respective octave. Mostly, the flutes aren't all that concerned with being in tune. Like, they'll move their headjoint around, but that's it. We've tried going to every person and tuning, but it doesn't work out. I'm thinking if I'm section leader next year (or even if my friend Karen is (we're going to share the section leader title)) then I'm going to say "Hey, lets tune with each other and then go find the other flutes and tune each of them to us." Hopefully that'll work.
