only one trumpet, sadly...

I saw this guy practicing his trumpet befor a concert, and he was going so high with his notes, my lips hurt just hearing them! I've never even heard a flute or piccolo go that high!!

hey fellow trumpet players I was just wondering how do you tongue multiple sixteenth notes in a row. Like two sixteenth notes are easy but how do you tongue 4 or 8 sixteenth notes in a row WELL without slurring them?

Its called double tonguing, I'm surprised your band director/ section leader hasn't screamed it at you yet lol.

he hasn't really told us how to tongue that way yet. He says he will soon. He likes students to try things out on their own before he tells them.
I don't know if I do it right, but I say "tika" repeatedly..the ti tounges with the tip of your tounge and the ka actually tounges with the rest of your tounge.

My band director was the same in teaching us how to double tongue. We had played a piece called Rosamunde, I think, and it required a lot of double tonguing, but we had a lot of fun with it.

He had us start up ticka'ing, and then increase in speed until we adjusted to it properly; it was great, overall.

Has anyone got any tips on how to play 'top C'. I can do it, but not with ease.
My BD has written an arrangment for Christmas and thought he would be evil and shove a C in there for the 1st trumpet part. Lucky me.
+ Last time I was playing it, a pain kept swimming through my head.. does that happen with anyone else? I think that it may have just been a bad day tbh.

Anyways... any tips? =]

do you feel dizzy, and like someone with giant hands is squeezing your head?because I was like that when I first started playing higher notes...

I talked to this guy who was playing notes so high, my lips hurt just listening to them...he says it's all about having air, I suggest doing a lot of breathing excersices...though I don't know if it'll really help...

It does feel rather like that (Phew! I thought I was abnormal for a moment there!)

I'm sure its worth trying.

Thanks for the advice!

It's so horrible. D: My trumpet is one of those kinds where you can't use a 'regular' lyre, so I have to use this one lyre that needs to be tightened by hand... and it doesn't work! I can't tighten it enough, so it falls over while I'm playing, and on top of that, the rubber has fallen off a bunch of times, so my trumpet now has scratches in it. D: D:

And when I took it to a music store, the guy said he can't fix it; the scratches are too deep. ):

At least it prompted me to memorize my music quickly.

oh don't worry.. my trumpet has duct tape on it! and the mouth piece won't come out. plus all the water stains all over it. same thing i went to my band director and the store and they were like "yeah i'd get a new trumpet." damaged instruments are just as good as brand new! biggrin

Just don't force it. I've sort of screwed myself over because I've tried to pound out a high range for the last 2 years of marching band and my embouchure is crap. I can't decide if I want to try and fix it before my college auditions or fix it the summer before I start. Anyways, moral of the story is to do long tones and work your way up rather than trying to squeeze your face into a high c.

I think I should buy some lip chap...*hasn't owned any for three years*

Wowz... thanks for all that advice! It seems to work better when I arpeggio up from middle C, or even scale up sometimes. Its strange how G seems so easy, A Ok, B is not bad neither, its just so difficult to get that little bit further!! I'll keep trying and take everything into account. Thank you so much for all your help!!

Youch!! Whats caused them to bleed? The cold weather?!

I'd be so gutted if I couldn't play for a while. I was gutted when I got braces and suddenely struggled more than usual (I was so glad when I finally got them off lolz). Often when you can't play it makes you want to do it even more! Psycological torture or what?!?!

to be honest, I think it's the bassooon I've been learning to play...it's a huge jump technically, especially for the lips...brass your lips vibrate int he mouthpeice, double reed, the mouthpeice vibrates inside your mouth...it's very foreign to me.

My lips are better now, I'm back in jaz band, and SO happy about it...trumpet is my true passion, bassoon is just an experiment.

I know, it was terrible!

last year my lips bled during winter, but I ignored it...I'm not "taking the pain" this year, because cleaning the blood out of my trumpet was a real pain...

not playing is also a pain...
