Atrasententia HOW IRONIC IS IT THAT EXTRAORDINARY IS A COMPOUND WORD OF EXTRA AND ORDINARY? Not at all. Extra being a word mean surplus, and ordinary meaning ordinary. So extraordinary is a compound word meaning surplus to the ordinary, or out of the ordinary.

I see it as more of a surplus of ordinary. Which is not out of the ordinary.

i have to agree with Lapus on this one, though i see where you are coming from Li. not al compound words are perfectly clear, but it's a matter of undestanding the context.
anywho, i downloaded D&D Online recently, and i am in love with it. i also have to admit, that i have fallen in love with the Ebberon setting.

Except that I'm right, as always. ?? how so? you explained what the word means. it isn't like it doesn't make sense. anywho, i was simply trying to give a little bit of help to her in understanding why it means what it does. is it so wrong for me to want to be part of a conversation if i have something to contribute, however unimportant it is?

But extraordinary means an extra dose of the ordinary, more mundane than the normal mundane, so there's a huge amount of irony in the word and its definition! I mean, anyone who would argue otherwise is obviously wrong.
