Glancing quickly back over his shoulder at Dante and the two young Pokemon, the redhead narrowed his eyes, deciding that it was time to end this. Looking back at Artemis, he was fairly certain that the Swellow felt the same way. Her body had undertaken a faint, red glow, but it did not hide the painful-looking burns that decorated her feathers. It was easy to see that she wanted nothing more than to finish this, and take a nice, long rest. "Artemis, you can take 'em out in one shot, girl," Keegan said, an icy edge to his voice. "Steel Wing." Whatever command Jody had issued to counter, neither Keegan nor Artemis heard it as the Swellow had launched herself into the air and was now streaking toward the Zangoose, nothing short of murderous intent in her eyes. The Swellow cut down her opponent with a single, solid strike of her steel-hard wing, already loosing a victorious trill as she looped around before landing in front of her trainer.

Out of the corner of his eye, Keegan saw Jody recall her fainted Zangoose before giving him the most hate-filled glare she could possibly manage. The redhead's response was to blow a kiss in her direction, which only caused her to shriek loudly before stomping out of the room. Keegan was sure he heard her mutter "b*****d" before the door slammed behind her. "Good riddance," he laughed, looking back to Artemis. Something had to be done about those burns. After a moment of thought, he smiled, and dug into his backpack for the small baggie of Lava Cookies he'd bought on one of his recent return-trips home. Most would consider them an acquired taste, but part of the Lavaridge Trio's daily routine had been trekking up the mountainside to buy them, and they'd spend the entire walk back down laughing and crunching noisily on their well-deserved rewards. Keegan broke the cookie into smaller pieces before holding them out to Artemis, who ate them slowly, but the look she gave her trainer was anything but appreciative, even after her burns had disappeared, leaving only a few charred feathers. The Swellow was not an instant fan of the Lava Cookie, it seemed.

With Artemis' burn taken care of, Keegan returned her to her PokeBall and stood up, brushing the few remaining Lava Cookie crumbs from his hands. He looked back at Dante again and smirked before motioning for him to follow, and with a growing sense of anticipation, Keegan strode across the room and opened the door, a feeling of elation and relief flooding his system when he saw "Gym Leader's Room" written on the posted sign. "Finally," he sighed as he and his little entourage entered the final room, and he gazed over at Norman, grinning almost darkly. "So, here we are. I guess it's time for that official match, huh?" He placed his hands on his hips, waiting for Norman explain the rules for the battle. This was it, he was finally here! After what felt like years, here he was, finally throwing down the challenge for his fifth badge.
=====
The blue-haired Gym Leader relaxed a little as he saw the mouse fall, and he closed his eyes, calling Pidgeotto back to his side with a snap of his fingers. The bird was visibly tired from the match; it had been fairly close, after all and it allowed its master to stroke its feathers before recalling it into its PokeBall. "You did well," he called over to his young challenger, realizing then that he didn't even know the lad's name. "Your Pokemon fought valiantly and bravely. It isn't often we are able to overcome such a type disadvantage." Falkner's voice had taken on a hint of warmth, replacing the cold, aloof one he adopted during battle. The Gym Leader had no doubts in his mind that the next time this boy and his Pikachu entered the gym, they'd be walking away with his Zephyr Badge. "Your Pokemon are in need of treatment," he went on, giving a shrill whistle. Almost immediately, his magnificent Pidgeot landed at his side, and Falkner climbed onto its back. "I trust we'll see you again, and sometime soon, at that," he added, flashing the boy a rare smile before the Flying-type took to the skies with a single flap of its powerful wings.

The bandanna-wearing boy hadn't made it halfway to the Department Store before Zorua had once again decided that being put inside her Pokeball was the worst sort of oppression ever. At first, Jasper assumed the Tricky Fox's company would be quite welcome, but he'd soon changed his mind as she once again assumed her creepy-child guise. Zorua only added to the ruse by clinging to his side, making walking very awkward. It also had the effect of making every single person they passed by give them a very wide berth. Jasper sighed and chose to just go with it; even if he were to recall her, Zorua would likely pop right back out of her Pokeball to continue freaking everyone out.

He had only the slightest hesitation before entering the multi-storey building, as it took a few moments for him to remember that he was actually still allowed to enter this place (shockingly). His dislike of elevators forced them to use the stairs (he wouldn't call it a fear, more like a mild aversion to them), but it was helpful as it allowed him to read the directory for each floor as they reached them. Zorua had changed back to normal as it was easier to hop up the stairs, although she only got as far as the third floor before she sat on the bottom step and cried loudly until Jasper picked her up.

"This floor is very... shiny," the youth observed with a quick glance around. It wasn't unlike the small TM section he'd seen back at the PokeMart in Azalea Town, and he smirked a little as he imagined the wide-eyed expressions on Jett's and Scarlet's faces if they could see the immense selection he was looking at right now. Jasper frowned a bit as he wondered what those two were up to. Hopefully they'd both challenged and defeated that Bugsy kid by now. Still wondering what his friends (it did feel a little strange that he had actually managed to make some) were up to, he began to browse, quickly discovering that these TM things were a lot more expensive than he'd initially realized.

Hayley let out a loud cheer when she saw that Tisyphone's attack was successful, and even she could see now that the Nidoran was looking a lot less apprehensive about battling. Brock didn't seem bothered by it, and in fact looked quite thoughtful as he commanded a Rock Throw from Geodude. The attack was just what it sounded like as the Rock Pokemon had quickly picked up and chucked a rock at the bashful poison type, hitting her right between the eyes.

"Tiss, Are you okay? Tiss!!" Hayley cried, her voice nearly drowned out by Mya's. The Nidoran was visibly shaken and slow to get to her feet, but her eyes were narrowed in grim determination. There was no way that she was going to lose to this... this... rock! The Nidoran threw back her head and loosed a sharp cry, a white-hot light practically exploding from her body. It lasted for only a few seconds, but the results were permanent, as now, instead of a timid-looking Nidoran stood a larger, fierce-looking Nidorina. Tisyphone didn't wait for a command this time and charged at the Geodude, intent on raking her claws across its face. That ought to teach it not to throw rocks!

Kasiya faked a pout as she watched the majority of Digger's venomous needles ricochet off Vesuvius' solid shell. Not that she was overly surprised or anything, but she had been hoping for it to be at least a little more effective than it had been. Digger, on the other hand, didn't look as though he could care any less than he did right now, staring blankly ahead at the Torkoal as it poked its head back out of his shell. "New plan!" the blonde announced loudly, flashing a cute smile in her boyfriend's direction. "Digger, use Sand Tomb!" The Sandslash, still looking genuinely apathetic, raised his claws, a small, sandy whirlwind blowing out from under him. A wider vortex of swirling sands began to form around the Torkoal, attempting to trap the Fire-type (though it wasn't like he was really going anywhere to begin with).

Oak dismissed Kressen's concerns with the damaged section of the lab with a wave of his hand. "I was thinking about renovating that section anyway," the older man laughed. "It's not a big deal. Besides, the important thing is that all of the Pokemon are safe and sound." Speaking of Pokemon, Kressen introduced his rather feisty-looking Krabby. "Gilgamesh, is it?" the professor said, carefully watching the Water-type. "You've got yourself a rather impressive Krabby right there. I trust the Pewter City gym won't be too much trouble for you now."

Professor Oak straightened up. "I suppose you'll be heading up that way now," he said, giving a knowing nod. "I've been hearing reports that the Beedrill in the forest have been acting strangely territorial lately. I strongly suggest stopping off in Viridian City to stock up on medicines and antidotes before you head into the Viridian Forest. It's quite the natural maze, after all, and it could be some time before you find your way out of it and into Pewter City."

Erika had been in the process of watering some of the flowers on the edge of the arena when she became aware of another person nearby, and she set down her watering can before turning to look. She smiled at the sight of the tall, raven-haired girl. "Why yes, I am Erika," she said, giving a slight bow. "As the Leader of the Celadon City Pokemon Gym, it is my duty and privilege to accept your challenge." She took position on her side of the battlefield, indicating for her challenger to do the same opposite her. "Tiffany shall officiate the match," she added as a girl with pale blonde hair and a khaki outfit appeared at the sidelines, giving a small bow of her own.

"The battle shall be three on three. The usage of items is not permitted, and there is no time limit. The battle will end when all three of one side's Pokemon are unable to battle. Begin!" Tiffany raised her arms to signal the battle's start.

"Thank you, Tiffany," Erika said, smiling at the girl. "I shall be the first to choose my Pokemon. Ivysaur, Darling, you're up!" With a graceful flick of her wrist, the Seed Pokemon appeared, giving itself a shake and grinning toothily across the field. "You may have the first move, Miss...?"

There Samuel sat, minding his own business, his lunch pail open on his lap (Momma made PB&J today!) and his Weedle, Robbie relaxing quietly in the grass next to him, snoozing so hard that there was an expanding and deflating bubble of snot that could possibly threaten to cause him lift off. Compared to the hectic battle between Bugsy and that boy with the not so chill butterfly pokemon a few minutes ago, things were quiet enough. Sammy doubted he’d have to do much battle, especially with Holly handling the new challenger quite loudly on the other side of the small wooded forest. So, the eight year old snapped open his lunch box, and was just about to retrieve the most delicious crustless whole wheat sandwich when he caught a crimson blur in the northern edge of his vision.

“Ah, I didn’ know there were any red flyin’ types, Robbie,” Sammy told the stirring Hairy pokemon, who took the word ‘flying’ as a warning and scuttled under his trainer’s legs. The weirdly flailing bird didn’t seem so good at that flying part though. In fact, it seemed to be on some sorta parabolic arc. … A really sharp one. With an ending point to the- “Oof…” Ground.

Sammy got up and approached the failed flier. “You alright there, friend?” the boy drawled as he almost reached his destination, only to hear something no bird ever said in the history of ever.

“Karp,” responded what the boy now knew was just a surprisingly aerodynamic fish. The red magikarp’s eyes were furrowed in an almost terrifyingly angry leer, its single visible pupil shooting a death glare toward the forest, which judging by its probable trajectory, was where Holly sent it hurtling through the air. It flopped in place rather aggressively.

“… Think I’ll take that as a no.”

---

“UGH THIS IS A JOKE,” the blue haired girl practically screeched. Cindy thought it was hella melodramatic. I mean, did the silly bug catcher think Scarlet was going to ignore the fish she’d apparently sent soaring across the cosmos? The quilava lowered her eyelids slightly for a moment, before her general distaste for shrieking bug users gave way to her general enjoyment of setting bugs aflame. Without waiting for any more complaining, the flames on her back lit up like the sun, and with about zero percent effort, she spat a fireball across the grassy field at the oddly unconcerned looking venonat.

“Gah! Counter it with confusion!” came the girl’s shrill voice again. Cindy frowned as the little insect’s eyes glowed, and a vaguely violet aura blasted from in front of it, crashing into her beautiful ember and fizzling out. It looked quite similar to that trick River used against her. Fortunately, from the look of it, it didn’t quite measure up to the damage the kirlia could output. It looked weak enough to take a small risk, anyway. She dropped down on all fours, scuttling toward the now not-so-unconcerned looking venonat in a breakneck charge. The flames on her head and tail blazed up, and Cindy became vaguely aware of the hilariously pointless order the girl gave her venonat to dodge. The purple thing tried to turn tail and run. It ended poorly for it.

Cindy leapt into the air and curled into a tight ball, spinning toward venonat like a flaming buzzsaw of doom. Flame Wheel didn’t feel quite… right like ember did, but it was certainly a hell of a lot more fun. And judging by the pained shriek the Insect Pokemon let out, it worked just fine. It fell over, and didn’t seem to have any plans to get back up, so the quilava trotted back over to her corner and stood on her hind legs, waiting politely (okay, with a cheeky smirk) for the bug catcher to release her next chew toy.

---

“Man, that was awful,” Scarlet frowned as he navigated his way through the dense, but not terribly large forest this man (or rather absurdly badass boy) planted in his gym. He absentmindedly wondered if maybe it would’ve been quicker to go around, before his brain dragged him back to the fact that he let his pokemon get blasted to the opposite side of a pokemon gym, anyway. “You think she’s okay?”

The general rumbling gravely sound came from deep inside the mantle pokemon, whose feet were shuffling in a blur to keep close to his trainer. Scarlet had no clue what it meant, but it was at least slightly reassuring. It didn’t take terribly long to clear the wooded area, and thankfully he didn’t run into a pinsir, or a scyther, or god forbid, a Viy. And there he found, surprise, another bug catcher, this one kneeling beside his magikarp, feeding her a piece of what looked to be the most gourmet of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Sledge let out a series of high pitched clicks, sliding ever so slightly from behind the redhead’s leg. It seemed to have what Scarlet believed was the roggenrola’s desired effect. Halibel’s eye darted toward the two of them, and with a series of “KARP!”s, she flopped and splashed her way into Scarlet’s arms.

Riza breathed a small sigh of relief as Erika introduced herself as the gym leader, as it meant she no longer had to force her way through that indoor jungle. Erika seemed to be quite pleasant and kind herself, and Riza glanced over as a girl named Tiffany had been appointed as the referee. 'Okay, where's the safari?' the raven haired girl thought with a quiet scoff as she took in the girl's outfit, but kept her thoughts to herself and instead nodded to show that she understood the rules for the battle.

"Riza, Riza Harding," Riza answered politely, looking on as Erika revealed her first Pokemon, an Ivysaur. 'Another one?' she thought, but again kept her thoughts to herself. She did smile though, knowing the perfect opponent for the Seed Pokemon. "Okay Eris, it's time to shine," Riza called out, and the Quilava appeared in a bright flash of light, the flames on her head and tail already flaring up. Riza remembered what Mike had said yesterday about the Quilava being somewhat close to evolving, and for the first time since before losing Shiro, she felt a small flutter of excitement, even if it didn't last for more than a second. "Start off with Smokescreen," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. Eris gave a bark and pawed the ground, the flames on her back hissing and dying down until nothing but a thick haze of black smoke was pouring out, obscuring the battlefield.

'How exciting can space rocks be?' Katie had thought as she accepted the pamphlet and walked away from the stand, the magazine tucked under one arm. She was thinking about what a grand waste of time this little side trip had been even if she did get the chance to stop at a small snack bar and get herself a delightfully cool and sweet Watmel Berry Smoothie. She enjoyed several long, refreshing sips before pausing to look at the little brochure. Sure enough, a map to Veilstone's most famous tourist attraction was displayed in front of her, and the orange haired girl sighed dejectedly. "How boring and utterly unhelpful," she grumbled, crumpling the piece of paper and jamming into the small pocket of her skirt. "Drop point, my foot."

Still sipping her smoothie, Katie had started walking again, but she only went about half a block before she spotted a billboard on the side of a building for the Meteorite Park. That same little map was printed up for all the public to see and Katie glared at it, suddenly wondering how many people would notice if she sent out Genki and had the Monferno set it on fire. Her pyromaniac urges would have to wait, however, for as the more she looked at the map, the more she realized something was off. "Wait a moment," she mumbled, setting her cup down on the curb as she unfurled the crumpled brochure. Katie uttered a silent swear to herself as she compared the map on the billboard to the one in her hands. They weren't the same at all! "Heh, go figure," the girl laughed, picking up her smoothie and heading back toward the department store, as it was currently the best landmark to gain her bearings with.

Brock winced as the rock had struck the poor Nidoran in the head, but rather than suffer permanent brain damage, it only seemed to tick the poison-type off, and before he knew it, the Nidoran had evolved into a tough and healthy looking Nidorina. 'Aha I knew it!' Brock thought, knowing that this was bad news for his Geodude, but at the same time, he knew that Hayley had done a good job of raising her Pokemon. The Scratch attack that Tisyphone used in retaliation wasn't the most effective of attacks, but the contact did manage to inflict poison (how could a rock even be poisoned?). "Use Tackle again, Geodude!" Brock called, figuring they were too close to try another Rock Throw, and seeing as how it had already been poisoned. Growling despite the weak feeling now filling its body, the rock-type launched itself at the Nidorina, intent on slamming into her with its full weight.

"Ah, a ghost Pokemon." Brawly remarked as the Ghastly was released. An interesting choice. More often than not it was a Sableye, as some cheeky trainers capture them from the cave up north. While this certainly complicated things, Brawly wouldn't be a very good gym leader if he didn't have safeguards against his most easily exploitable weakness. "Ride out the attack, Machop, and use Foresight!" Honestly, he never really enjoyed using his blatant type advantages, but to each their own!

The Superpower Pokemon flinched as he prepared for his upcoming tongue bath. Oh joy of joys, he loved this attack. Machop endured the experience, but twitched as he felt the ectoplasmic slobber drip down his face. Shaking it off, the Pokemon regained his focus, slapping his hands together and closing his eyes. After a brief moment, he opened them, his eyes flashing blue for just a second. Soon, the Ghastly's immaterial body became much more visible, and Machop smirked, more than ready to put his fist right where its nose should be.

Yeah, Torkoal weren't really known for their speed. Well, I mean, technically they were known for their lack of speed, which could be argued to be sort of-nevermind! Point is! Vesuvius wasn't doing much in the act of dodging Digger's Sand Tomb, and soon found himself trapped in a miniature sandstorm.

In the way Mike reacted to Digger's enthusiastic attack, you would have thought that Kasiya had offended the honor of some overly-entitled parent, not her boyfriend. "So you want to snuff out his dreams, huh?" he huffed with all of his vocal might. "I'll have you know that not only is my little Vesuvius an accomplished sprinter, but that two can play at his game! Fire Spin!" With all the overly dramatic flair that was necessary (and some that wasn't), Mike commanded for his Pokemon to prove Hammurabi proud and put the Sandslash in a trap of his own.

Not nearly quick enough to follow his trainer's obvious sarcasm, Vesuvius got all charged up to defend Mike's honor. Yeah! Maybe he did have dreams of running, sprinting, or just being fast in general! Who was this spiky bully to tell him otherwise?! With highly amusing gusto, the Torkoal grunted out a stream of flames that traveled across the field, hoping to encircle the Sandslash.

Mike chuckled at his Pokemon's reaction, not expecting him to take him so seriously.

"This is... stupid. And hard," Jasper grumbled to himself as he wandered from section to section of the TM shop. The wonderful amount of money he thought he'd possessed turned out to be a little more than chump change in a place like this, and Jasper was faced with the cruel and un-fun decision of narrowing down his choice of purchases - the five finger discount was definitely not an option here as the delinquent had spotted no less than half a dozen security cameras without even trying to locate them - old habits and all. Creepy-child Zorua stuck to her trainer's side like glue and offered no help whatsoever other than keeping the rest of the store's patrons away from them.

Jasper opted to stick with his original plan, which had been to get something for Koffing as he was completely sick of ordering Tackles and Smogs and Poison Gases. Thinking back to all the birds he'd just battled, the boy picked up a rather snazzy-sounding Thunderbolt TM (even if he still had no idea how to use these stupid things). Deciding then that all of his Pokemon needed new moves (Ditto being the odd one out, but then again, the Terrific Transformer didn't really need the help) he also found Double Team for Zorua and Brick Break for Paras (perhaps the ability to smash things with his claws would help to inspire courage?). He still had Aerial Ace for Croconaw, so all in all it seemed pretty fair - a new move for each Pokemon that was able. Despite his successful shopping spree, he couldn't seem shake the curious feeling that he was being watched as he escorted his "little sister" (Zorua had voiced her displeasure with a curt growl at being referred to as his brother) to the checkout lanes, looking over his shoulder in an almost paranoid fashion.

In all his time on Arceus' green earth, Jasper was certain he'd never held, nor spent so much money all at one time. He watched with a sort of pained expression as the clerk accepted his grand total of $8,000, leaving him with a modest $2,200 to his name - still more money than he had on his person on his best of days before this whole 'being a trainer' business. He muttered his thanks, not even bothering to count his change as he turned to leave. After only a few steps, however, he stopped, and looked back at the clerk with a determined expression. "This is going to sound really stupid but..."

It took more than a few moments for Tisyphone's evolution to fully sink in, but when it did, the shriek of excitement that Hayley let out could rival that of any Whismur or Loudred. "Tiss! I can't believe it!" the brunette cried happily. On her shoulder, Mya stared in awe, clearly amazed that her teammate had undergone such a growth spurt, and the tiny Rattata silently wondered if she could do that, too.

By the time Hayley had regained her composure, Brock's Geodude had hit the newly-evolved Nidorina with another Tackle attack, but this time, the poison type got right back up, growling fiercely. 'Go Tiss,' the brunette thought proudly, distantly picturing a fully-matured Nidoqueen in her mind's eye. "I think we can win this one! Double Kick!" the Bennett girl cried, punching the air. Tisyphone rushed her opponent, once again spinning before lashing out with her hind feet. She was stronger now, and she wasn't about to let her trainer down!

"Ha, the crooks gave you more incentive to renovate then. A silver lining in the mess. I really can't believe the audacity of those buffoons. Coming in to a lab to try and steal Pokemon. It makes my blood boil." The compliment made him smile. The Krabby was indeed a Pokemon to be proud of, but then again all of them where.

"You've guessed right sir. I'll be heading there next, but I don't think it's a sure win just cause I have a water type. As for the forest, trust me I know. Had some trouble with those Beedrill before we came here. I've been camping in there awhile so I know it well enough though,so hopefully we'll be challenging Brock in a two or three days." He recalled the Krabby so it would stop bothering the workers.

"Is there anything you need before I head out? I mean like helping you with Officer Jenny and filling out a statement?"

Ben was feeling a bit dejected as he walked the streets out of the Gym. He'd thought for sure that he would have that match in the bag... 'Gym leaders are really tough,' he thought with a quiet sigh, looking back up at the tall tower of the Pokemon Gym. He would have to work a lot harder, that was for sure, if was going to prove himself. What sort of Pokemon Trainer couldn't even beat the Gym in the first city? That was it. He needed to get his resolve, and not give up. He owed it to his grandpa, and to the Pokemon he was training.

Quietly, he turned to walk in to the Pokemon Center, handing over his two pokeballs to the reception nurse and going to the cafeteria to wait. He hoped his Pikachu and Pidgey would forgive him for pitting them against such strong Pokemon... He should have known that they needed more training. But he couldn't give up on them, either. He just had to encourage them and know that they can do it... Eventually...

The blond boy groaned and then scoffed a little, raising his left hand and putting it gently behind his head. "I remember being hit in the head with a stick," he replied dryly. "I remember that I was utterly helpless to protect my girlfriend after promising her that I would. I remember that I failed her, and if she never forgives me, well then... I deserve it." Jaeshan sighed and turned his gaze away from Lisa, not really in the mood to have her watch him wallowing in his self pity.

"That's not exactly what I meant," the blue-haired girl said quietly. "I'm sorry about Jade, though. She seemed really..." Lisa trailed off as she looked for the right word, but it didn't matter as Jaeshan didn't appear to be listening to her anymore. Something else occurred to her though, and she straightened up in her chair a bit. "You kept saying that 'they' took her. Any idea who 'they' are?"

Jaeshan shook his head. "Unfortunately, no. Jade didn't really give me any specifics. All I know is that she ran away, and that she was under some kind of oath or vow or contract or something, and that she was in big trouble for running away. And that she was scared - no terrified - of 'them'. She really didn't want to go back..." He sighed again and looked back at Lisa, frowning slightly. "Say... how did you even find me in the first place? We'd been out training in the forest."

Lisa's face turned a bright shade of pink. "Well, I've s-sorta been following you since I gave you that news clipping. And y'know. Dropped that whole everyone-thinks-you're-dead bomb on you. Which... yeah. I'm pretty glad you're not. Dead, that is."

That remark actually made the blond laugh. "Yeah, well, me too, actually. And that was more like a nuke than a bomb, by the way," he added, noting the blush in the blue-haired girl's cheeks. His memories still hadn't returned to him, but as he watched her, he knew she was definitely familiar to him somehow. "So... were we like... together, or something?" he asked tentatively. "You know. Before the whole almost-but-not-really dead thing." He was still having a hard time wrapping his head around the whole not-dead thing, and not being able to remember anyone from his past didn't help matters. He carefully studied Lisa's reaction as he waited for a response, but without even realizing it, he'd crossed his fingers under the blankets, almost desperately hoping she'd say no.
=-=-=-=-=

"Riza, yes. Pleased to make your acquaintance," the dark-haired gym leader said with a bow, though when she saw the Fire-type Quilava, for the briefest of seconds, her composure faltered. Erika wasn't sure she'd ever be comfortable facing a Fire-type Pokemon, even if her gym was well-equipped to deal with the threat if flames happened to spread from the battlefield to her precious gardens. Riza appeared to be playing it smart to start, however, calling out for a Smokescreen. Very soon, the battlefield had become obscured with thick smoke. Erika wrinkled her nose slightly as it made her eyes water. "It's okay, Ivysaur," she called lightly. "Stay back for now, and use Growth. We'll be ready for it." The Seed Pokemon had taken a few cautious steps back, not liking the fact that it could no longer see anything. It gave its body another shake, which gave it the illusion that it had grown larger as it gathered power, but no one would know for sure as the smoke was currently obscuring everything.
=-=-=-=-=

Kasiya couldn't help but giggle at the overly-dramatic boy and she dismissed his theatrics with a wave of her hand. She really didn't much of a chance to retort, either, as the apparently-insulted Vesuvius had sent out a stream of flames that quickly coiled into a vortex that surrounded her unconcerned Sandslash, trapping him.

The blonde let out a haughty (and obviously fake) laugh in reply. "Ooh, we think we're so clever, huh? Digger, bust out of that fire! Rapid Spin!"

"Slash." Digger's voice could barely be heard over the roar of the Fire Spin, but it seemed that being surrounded by a raging inferno of fire couldn't even spark his interest. Once again, the Sandslash tucked his body into a compact, spiky ball and began to spin rapidly in place, sending out rings of pulsating energy that struck the walls of the Fire Spin, disrupting it completely. The display was gorgeous; wisps of flame cascading down all around while Digger's spin came to an abrupt stop, the badass pose he struck at the end adding to the overall effect (even though the pose had been purely instinctual; it wasn't like the spiky mouse had planned to look cool or anything). Kasiya jumped up and down on the spot, clapping her hands and cheering loudly. If Digger had been in a contest, well, he might have just scored himself a whole lot of points!

Oak couldn't help but laugh and stroke his chin as he listened to the tall redhead speak. "Ah, yes. A silver lining. I do suppose you're right," he said, looking back in the direction of the workers. He really did hope they would finish in a timely manner, as all that banging and sawing and hammering was really starting to disrupt the Pokemon.

"Well, it's all just the same, lad. I trust that I don't have to insult you by telling you to be careful, but let's just call it the wishes of an old man." Still grinning broadly, the professor shook his head. "Everything's good here, Kressen m'boy. I feel as though I have taken up too much of your time already. You still have several hours of travel ahead of you, and I wish you the best of luck on your journey, young man."

"No worries sir. I'm always careful, but it's hard to prepare for a swarm of Beedrill appearing out of nowhere and chasing you down. I've got more pokemon to aid in the battle now so I'm sure it will work out fine." He gave the professor a grin and a wave as he set off.

"See you later Professor. I'll be sure to stop by next time I'm in town. Maybe next time I'll have another rare pokemon simply fall into my lap once more." Who knew what would happen? He certainly never expected Odin's egg to fall out of the sky and into his lap. Perhaps he'd have a legend fall into his lap next. That would certainly be another amazing experience he'd never forget.

Now was the time to plan for the Pewter City Gym. He had his Krabby and Pawniard to go up against the rock types, but as of yet Odin knew no metal type moves. Perhaps some more training was in order.

“Are you okay? You seem okay, you’re floppin’ around enough,” Scarlet only halfway asked as held the wriggling fish pokemon at arm’s length, spinning her around and checking for wounds. Other than slight bruising from the contact point of the not-even-psychic bug’s psychic shockwave, though, Halibel seemed fine.

“So that’s yer Magikarp?” Sammy piped in, tearing the remainder of his sandwich in half and dropping it in the grass next to him. Scarlet nodded, watching as the tiny bee larva pokemon inched its way over rather eagerly, beginning to nibble on its lunch.

“Well, I was gunna take a lunch break,” Sammy sighed, adjusting the weirdly omnipresent straw hat on his head slightly. “But since this is a gym, and yer a trainer tryin’ t’ get t’ Bugsy…”

All the redhead could do was sigh, vacantly wondering if there was some league rule that would at least cut him a small break if his pokemon was currently handling another team. “Fine,” he sighed. “One on one acceptable to you?”

“Yup!” The boy laughed. “All I got is Robbie here!” The weedle cried out cheerfully. Maybe it would soon evolve into the fabled kakuna, and show all that it was a force to be reckoned with, or at least maybe that he was really hard to hurt.

Without a word from her trainer, Halibel jumped from her trainer’s grasp, black dotted eye staring at the weedle with an untold fierceness in her eyes. It was almost scary to the little larva who inched back a couple of feet.

“… If you’re sure,” Scarlet said quietly, and with a deep breath, the flame in his soul reignited. “Let’s go, Halibel! Let’s show ‘em how badass you are!” The Magikarp flopped in place, eyes narrowed as she released a series of loud ‘karps’. She was usually quite a bit more docile than this, but Scarlet wasn’t complaining. His Magikarp was going to be a horrifically awesome magikarp. Hell, perhaps she’d be in the top percentage of magikarp.

“Hah hah! We ain’t gunna make this easy for yah!” Sammy grinned. “A’right, Robbie! Use yer poison sting!”

“Okay, you little cretin,” Blue Girl muttered as she recalled her useless not-even-psychic, cleverly categorized Insect Pokemon. Cindy waited quietly while the girl fumbled around for another pokeball. A new charred bug wouldn’t be too hard a goal to achieve, after all.

“Let’s see you beat my best pokemon!” There was another stupidly blinding white flash, and the newest victim was on the battlefield. Whatever it was, it looked like an oddly malformed turtle. Its bright red shell wasn’t like anything Cindy’d seen before, and it had creepy, wormy legs and an equally creepy wormy face with the dopiest grin in the history of grins. The Quilava’s head tilted to the right, her eyes narrowing.

“Hah, is that fear? Good! You should be afraid! You’ll never be able to beat Shuckle!” The girl sneered. “Withdraw! Now!” The smiling shuckle did just as he was told, wormy limbs getting sucked back into his body, leaving nothing but a shell rocking back and forth for a moment.

Cindy’s eyes narrowed. Fear? She’d show this girl fear alright. Again, she charged toward the Shuckle as quick as her legs would carry her, leaping high into the air and striking at it with a flame wheel. She landed on the back of its shell and made to jump away from what she had no doubt was the crispiest bug ever.

“WRAP.”

Well, she’d almost made it. Its freakish worm legs shot out of its shell surprisingly quickly, and bound around her body. Cindy yelped in pain. At least before she realized that it barely hurt at all. Judging by the dopy smile the thing still wore, though, her flame wheel hadn’t done much of anything either. Whatever a Shuckle was, beating it seemed as though it’d take a while.

Though her legs still hurt from the day before, once she got into it, the pain seemed to subside, and she was marching along at a rather steady pace. She tried to avoid battling as much as she could for now, as she knew that if she stopped the pain would come right back and her legs would cramp up. Still, this didn't stop a couple of Pidgey from bothering them. Luckily, they were easily taken care of by Pikachu. She, saw some suspiciously moving leaves at one point, and hurried past; she did not want to deal with another Bellsprout.

After what was probably an hour or so of walking, Train saw a roof just a little ways ahead. She got a little excited; maybe they were friendly and--her stomach growled… Maybe they were friendly and could offer her something to eat.

It was no surprise that Brawly opted to use a move like Foresight, despite his trainers' Pokémon not being a high enough level to use the attack yet. Still, it make the battle significantly more difficult. It didn't help that Ghos didn't have that many powerful attacks in his arsenal right now. Sucker Punch was good, but Machop were pretty resilient to Dark-type moves. Giga Drain would certainly help, though.

However, Ghos hadn't taken any damage yet, so Leon did not want to throw that attack out there just yet. He opted for a less offensive move for now. "Hypnosis."

Riza closed her eyes and sighed. She listened to Erika's command for a Growth, and she smiled, having taken out her pokedex to check up on her opponent's Pokemon. "Yes, but will you be ready for this?" she said quietly, feeling quite confident about the match. "Eris, let's keep them in the dark. Extrasensory." The Quilava stayed quiet, rearing back on her hind legs as her eyes began to shine with a bright, pinkish glow. She directed the odd, psychic attack outward, reaching out with her mind in order to deliver the mental attack to the Ivysaur.

Now that she had started from the proper place, the map wasn't all that hard to follow and after about half an hour, Katie found herself in front of a run down old warehouse. She couldn't see any doors right away and the windows were boarded up, and she walked around as much of the perimeter as the layout would allow before coming back to her starting point. "This is the place," she murmured, double and triple checking the map and retracing her steps in her head. "Am I missing something?" The orange haired girl took the small data device from her other pocket and examined it.

It was then that a previously unseen door clicked open, swinging outward in an ominous manner. Katie's first instinct was to back away slowly, but she stopped herself and instead moved closer. "Um. Hello?" she called out nervously but of course there was no answer. Her free hand closed around Kord's poke ball and she ventured forward, stepping bravely into the warehouse. Not surprisingly the door slammed shut behind her, and Katie looked around quickly but still saw no one. The inside of the warehouse was very large and quite empty, with only a single light shining down into the center of it. 'Smart people would have ran away,' the orange haired girl thought with a chuckle, having since removed the Electabuzz's poke ball from her belt entirely. "Hello?" she called out again, her voice echoing loudly through the empty building. "Is anyone here?"

It wasn't surprising to see the Nidorina get right back up after being tackled, and Brock watched with a slight frown as the Poison Pin Pokemon delivered another fierce Double Kick, this one stronger than the last. The new power from the evolved Pokemon combined with the poison made for a very weak Geodude, and with a small grunt, the rock-type fell to the ground, arms laying weakly at its sides. "Good job, Geodude, you fought well," Brock said with a nod, recalling his fallen partner. "You may have beaten Geodude, but you're not out of the woods yet! This last Pokemon of mine really likes to rock and roll!"

Brock pitched his poke ball skyward, light quickly exploding from the sphere and forming into a very large creature. Brock's Onix shook the ground beneath it as it landed and it gave a tremendous roar, glaring down at the tiny blue Pokemon below it. "Start of with Curse!" the gym leader called, and the massive rock snake hunkered down in its heavy stone coils, its whole, segmented body taking on a reddish hue to show that its attack and defensive abilities increased, but at the cost of its speed. Onix glared at Tisyphone, daring her to even think about attacking it.

The fields around Pallet town were fairly calm aside from the wind blowing through the grass. No one else was on the road to Viridian City right now that he could see, so it made it more likely he'd come across wild pokemon. He already saw bird pokemon flying over head. Pidgey and Spearow often duked it out over turf here. He'd seen a few gust attacks here and there, but nothing to serious.

The last thing he wanted ,other than a swarm of Beedrill, was getting caught in a territory war between the two bird types. It could get messy. Perhaps that's why he had only seen those two species out and about. The other pokemon didn't want to get caught in between that mess either. There was no place to take cover out in the field if something did go down so, perhaps he'd better pick up his pace.

The hoot of one of the birds hiding in the grass made that decision seem like a good one. The damn place seemed to be a powder keg ready to go off at any moment.
