Ten minutes. A ten minute shouting match between a Cyndaquil and a Hoothoot. It was at the four minute mark that Scarlet sat down and watched, trying to translate the “HOOT!”s and the “QUIL!”s. After six minutes of straight fail, he huffed and frowned, extending finger toward the fluttering Hoothoot. Scarlet was the trainer. It was his job to end this fiasco.
”Cindy! Tack-“
With a rather frightening little squeak, Cindy lunged at Hoothoot and tackled it to the ground. And she waved around her tiny little arms, weakly smashing them at the owl’s giant eyes. Scarlet ran over to run interference, lifting up his raging Cyndaquil and walking away from the woozy-eyed owl lying on the ground.
”HEY. HEY. NO. We do NOT have catfights with enemy pokemon. That’s silly. You’re a mouse. … I think.”
Cindy barely managed to fold her almost comically short arms, barking indignantly before settling on pouting.
”I don’t care who started it. We can’t have you needlessly getting hurt before we get to Violet town. You already got nailed with two tackles.” With a grin starting to creep across his face, Scarlet put his little buddy down, starting to walk a bit deeper into Route 30.
Cindy tilted her head to the right before running off after her partner. ”Quil?”
”We’re practicing a little more. By now, you should have a nice new trick that should make you a hell of a lot harder to hit. First trainer we find is gonna get crushed.”
With a mischievous smile, Cindy snickered, glancing toward one of the five pokeballs wrapped across Scarlet’s belt line.
The future League Champion glanced back at his tiny little friend, then at his belt. ”Ah. Don’t you worry about that, pal. We’ll make some new editions in Violet town after a bit more leveling. Then we’re gonna take that gym leader and crush him…”

"Wow," Justin snorted, folding his arms over his chest, "you can actually attack me now. I'm scared. Go, Zigzagoon! Use your Headbutt!"
The Zigzagoon in question charged forward without a moment's hesitation. It was heading directly for the unmoving Ralts! How foolish! Zigzagoon growled, only to run headfirst into a tree trunk. It shuddered in response, just like the three observers did at the very loud thunk!
"...So, yeah," Jett said, casting a smug glance towards the now twitching Justin. "Confusion, River! Let's show them how scary we are now."
River wasn't worried about being scary as she sent another telekinetic blast at the Zigzagoon. She was more worried about the likelihood of the Tinyraccoon Pokemon mentally functioning following this battle. The Zigzagoon darted to the side, but it was still slightly caught by the attack, forcing its balance to fail as it tried to scurry into a good attacking position.
"S-shake it off, Zigzagoon! Use uh..."
"You really wanna try for another Headbutt? That ended out so perfectly last time."
"S-shut up! Zigzagoon, use Tail Whip!" And so the Zigzagoon began chasing its own tail again, distracting River from its danger level and inevitably lowering her guard.
"Growl," Jett retorted, watching River let out her most menacing growl. And again, it managed to be about as menacing as a new-born Eevee.
"Tackle! Tackle it and end this battle!" The Zigzagoon was in control of itself as it charged correctly towards River, who stood her ground.
"When I say 'Now,' River, you use Confusion," Jett instructed, waiting for just the right moment to get the perfect hit in. The Zigzagoon neared and leapt into the air, intent on tackling the Feeling Pokemon one last time.
"Now!" River let a telekinetic blast loose right in the Zigzagoon's ever-nearing face, the point-blank Confusion working like a charm. The Zigzagoon was hurled back, tumbling in the dirt, before it let out one final growl and fell unconscious. Jett settled his suddenly icy gaze upon the silent Justin.
"...So, about those directions."

Mitsu merely nodded, removing her scarf and jacket, stuffing them into her bag causing the brown thing to practically double in size. The girl was left in her boots, skirt, and a fairly plain purple camisole whose sole decoration was a small strip of lace at the top. Still the volcano was far too hot for her tastes and she could feel a bead of sweat start to form above her brow. The purple haired girl had followed silently until they reached their destination. But all her silence and her cool demeanor was completely shattered once she saw the scene before her.
First of all there was Nina, a great friend whom she had not seen in a very, very, very long time. And then Sabrina, who. . . who was supposed to be dead! Mitsu shook her head, figuring there would be an explanation later. And truly, she didn't really care as much about this fantastic news as she cared for Mike's safety and well-being at the moment. Lastly, the most heartbreaking scene was Mike who looked both terrified and hurt at the same time. And, of course, this was a complete understatement.
Tears welled up and started to fall from her face. Mitsu, jumped from the small ledge that they had stopped at and ran as quickly as she could to her friend. Wordlessly she threw her arms around him giving him a hug. He was a lot warmer than she remembered, or maybe it was just the volcano. She managed to pull away, a bit because it was too hot to continue hugging him.
"You're hurt Mike," Mitsu whispered taking a good look at him. Closing her eyes she concentrated, trying her hardest to summon the ability to heal. She hadn't done it in a while for very good reasons and it was becoming harder and hard for her to call upon the skill she'd developed through unfortunate situations. After a few moments her hands began to glow a lively green aura. Tracing over Mike's scratches and cuts Mitsu caused them to seemingly, magically disappear. She allowed her hands to linger where bruises were and where she imagined he would be sore. Lastly, she moved her hands to his face. She moved her thumb over his cheek to remove the cuts and scrapes that had accumulated themselves there. She held her hand over his forehead much like a person would do to check a patient's temperature to see if they had a fever. The gash seemed to invert itself, though one couldn't see this, as it healed.
Mitsu tried to pull her hand away, having a bit of trouble as her powers continued to heal further than the superficial exterior. Perhaps her powers were penetrating his mentality, healing things like headaches, though Mitsu couldn't be sure. When she finally managed to pull her hand away, a scar remained where the gash first was. She was very much light-headed and fatigued. "Feeling better I hope?" she said, trying to fit a small laugh in there, tears still streaming down her face. Her voice sounded more sorrowful than anything. "I'm sorry," was the last thing she could utter before collapsing, her weight falling forward onto the boy she'd so desperately wanted to see.

Riza was still silently fuming when she heard a voice speak up from behind her, and she quickly came to the realization that the people she'd heard behind her had figured out something was wrong. 'People should mind their own business,' she thought angrily, whipping around to face the intruder, though she stopped when she realized that it was a girl, maybe a year younger than her. Riza's angry words were forgotten as she studied the girl's dress, which was nothing short of gorgeous. "Oh, uh, yeah, we're okay," she said, looking over her shoulder at Shiro. He'd stopped walking as well, but he didn't say anything and looked a the newcomers with the most indifferent expression he could muster, in true Crenu-style. "Just a little disagreement between friends, is all," she said, nodding a little.
Fantina allowed Ryka to be the first to speak up, though the purple-clad gym leader practically hovered over her shoulder. "Oh, what have we 'ere? A lover's quarrel, peut-être?" she cried, her voice light and airy. It was safe to say that she didn't quite believe the dark-haired girl's answer, as she seemed very upset, perhaps by something her tall, blonde and spiky-haired companion had done or said, and that seemed to be the case as she studied his icy and cool demeanor.
"Lover's what?" Riza scoffed, shaking her head. "No way, nothing like that," she grumbled, looking towards the woman that was hovering over the pretty blonde girl's shoulder. Almost immediately her grey eyes went wide with recognition and her posture straightened right out. Elaborate, fancy gown, hair done up right, wearing that unmistakable purple motif. "Oh my goodness, you're Fantina, aren't you?" she cried. "I've seen you on TV, you're quite a famous coordinator! My name is Riza, and this here's Crenu. I'm a big fan of yours!"
"Mais oui!, zat iz me!" Fantina cried, giving a graceful curtsey. She was a little bit surprised that a trainer way out here in Kanto recognized her, but then again many of the contests she'd competed in had been televised. "Je suis l'élégante et gracieuse Fantina! And zis belle jeune fille est Ryka. Eet iz a pleasure to meet both of you. I love meeting my fans!" She stepped forward and shook both Riza and Crenu's hands, chattering on incoherently in French.

"So if you go the opposite of the direction you were going, you should be fine..."
"...Thanks," Jett grumbled, peeking at the map Justin held. The path seemed pretty straight-forward. Maybe we'll have a new addition to the team before we get out of this place... Jett thought with a small smile. With a tad more sincerity this time, he thanked Justin, picked up River, and headed north.
"That was so amazing, River!" Jett grinned. Now that they were out of sight of other people, it was time to gloat and brag and support. "You held up wonderfully under all those Headbutts! And by the time we're out of this forest, we'll so be ready for Roxanne!" The Feeling Pokemon smiled at her trainer's suddenly sunny disposition. She clung to Jett's head, patting the inky black head that talked at her as it carried her through this not-scary-anymore forest.
"You wanna go back in your Pokeball and rest a bit?" River nodded and Jett recalled her into her home.
A sudden confidence was clear in the teen's eyes as he strode forward. Not only did he learn he wasn't absolutely alone in this forest, but he also had his first trainer battle and won! River was capable of fighting!
I bet that kid has nothing on Roxanne, a cool voice retorted in Jett's mind. He frowned slightly. You've heard the stories. She'll bury that poor Pokemon alive with rocks! ...Or something.
"Shut up," Jett muttered, shaking his head. His fingers gingerly touched River's Pokeball. I'll give her an hour's rest. That should be more than enough. Then... Jett cast a worried glance to the tree-tops, that glimpse of light almost gone by now. He was going back into the deep forest.
Then we'll start training again.

Jun stared intently into the barely distinguishable eyes of the three-feet tall living nest of vines situated before him on a stool. He often boasted that he could conquer any bed of hair, be it tangled, disorderly or stubbornly resistant to colonization, but this was a whole new level of madness... He couldn't follow a vine with his eyes for more than an inch before it intertwined or knotted with another vine, or ten other such navy vines. But there was no such thing as impossible in Jun's vocabulary! (Except for making pantylines classy. Not possible.)
"You have... /remarkable/ volume, my dear," Jun said, faking some cheer. "Alright, but there's no sense dilly dallying. On to business, shall we?"
The Tangela nodded silently.
"Here's the lowdown. There is beauty, which requires accepting, emphasizing, and /embracing/ the natural... then there is style, which is generally spoken as /rebelling/ against the natural. You seem like the type who'd quite enjoy something... /sophisticated/, yes? That is what your aura tells me."
(The quest for aesthetics was imbued with colors and auras and the such, and Jun, being extremely sensitive to emotion and beauty, could more or less understand vain Pokemon and uncooperative people this way. Not that he was psychic, or anything... Jun's ambitions were sometimes unrealistic, and that characteristic bled into his persona, probably.)
"So, then, rather than polishing your tangles, we're going to /abolish/ them. It will likely take quite a while... Possibly hours. /More/, even. But before we start... umm... This might sound silly, but I'm /no/ Pokemon extraordinaire, I just know beauty... your face isn't a... well, you know... a black /hole/ or anything, is it? Or you won't die, being an untangled Tangela?"
The Tangela chortled, shook its massive head. It then, however, shifted to one side, before unhashing some garbled confusion of "Tange" "La, la, la!" and so forth.
Demi, Jun's Jynx, kindly translated for him, which was possible for a couple reasons. Demi was no Karri or Anna; she couldn't portray impress her thoughts upon others and so speak. But with Jun's ability to read into auras and hearts, tied in with Demi's Psychic nature, made it possible for the two to more or less understand each other's thoughts without specific words.
"Oh, so you're saying... you have tried to untangle yourself. And the product I have in my hands right now doesn't work, does it? How about... this one? No? This one? No? .... (And so on and so forth) ... But there must be /some/ answer to this! Beauty is a science; we might not understand how lightning and frizz descends from the heavens now, but give some time and we'll discover the rocket science /fabulousity/ of sleek precision. "
Jun thought for a moment. What was wrong with these products? They could not soak through and treat her thick hair -- vines -- wait!
"Posh! Come on out. I need your chemical experience," Jun suddenly called, releasing his Roselia. The prudish flower preened, haughtily giving the new Grass-type a once over before deciding that she, of course, was much more beautiful and he was hardly worthy of her audience. "What's the name of that... conditioner we use for your vines?" Jun asked, rummaging through his Mary-Poppins-esque stockpile of products within his luggage. At last, he pulled out a gray bottle that had no name on it. "Actually, Posh and I over there made this solution /ourselves/," Jun grinned wolfishly. One of these days, my dear flower chemist over there and I are going to open up a line of products... There's only one bottle of this left, Posh, sorry; I'll be using this for our current customer, we'll make more later, alright my darling?"
The Roselia pouted, sulked, pranced back into her Pokeball.
"She's always like that," Jun sighed. Divas. What could you do about them? But anywho, he squirted the aloe vera infused conditioner into his hands, rubbed them eagerly, and got to work.

It wasn't surprising that when an hour passed, Jett and River were lost yet again. Except this time, they were lost in the darker part of the forest.
"..." The chitter-chatter of the forest was getting at the two, especially the newly rested River. She clung to Jett's head with extra strength now, and Jett felt a headache beginning to form. "...Maybe we should've gone to Littleroot and gotten a Pokedex and a map beforehand..."
River immediately descended from the boy's skull, managing to cast her best 'You're the stupidest person I know right now' look as she landed on leaves and broken twigs.
"...B-but... I don't wanna go through this place again..." River's glare was unrelenting. "...I-it'll be fine! I promise!" River folded her tiny, white arms over her tiny chest. And she huffed. Adorably. "M-maybe they sell maps at the Pokemart in Rustboro! We can do without a Pokedex for now, right!?"
River stared. And stared. And stared. Then she canted her head to the right and stared some more. It was freaking the trainer out. Her eyes were seeing into his soul. And Jett personally didn't like his soul being seen by dangerous things.
"Hey! It'll be okay! We're fine! You have your new attack and--" Jett stopped at the sight of River's growing smirk, as if she was saying, "Yes, let's test that new attack out now."
That was exactly what River was thinking as she sent a telekinetic wave right into Jett's stomach. He fell back, dizzy and angry and scared at once, and River let out another indignant huff and darted in the opposite direction.
"W-wait! River! Wait! I'm sorry!"

Jett followed River into the darker part of the forest, ignoring the curious Wurmple and disturbed Zigzagoon as he flew past, trying to catch his suddenly very fast Pokemon.
"HOLD IT, TRAINER." A boy with a wide-brimmed straw hat emerged from the shadows. "I AM BARRY, THE MASTER OF BUG CATCHERS. NO ONE WILL DEFEAT ME. YOU WILL BE BROUGHT TO YOUR KNEES BY MY MIGHTY BUG POKEM--"
"OUT OF THE WAY," Jett shrieked, offering Barry, the master of Bug Catchers, a look into his suddenly crazed eyes. "River! River!"
"How pathetic!" Barry, the master of Bug Catchers, laughed. "Your own Pokemon is running from you--" Jett angrily seized a Pokeball from Barry, the master of Bug Catchers, and hurled it at random, releasing Dusty, the master of Dustox.
"Your turn! Have fun!" Jett yelled as he ran off, leaving the empty Pokeball in his wake. "River! River! River?" It was growing darker beneath the shade of leaves and the likely lack of sunlight. There was no way River could stand something this dark alone--
A white little body with a green head launched itself from the darkness, smacking into Jett's face and clinging to his skull. River could not stand something this dark alone indeed, and swiftly, she released her trainer and fell back to the ground.
There was a pathetic attempt at a glare that tried to prove that River was still angry at Jett, but it failed to work. Jett merely raised an eyebrow, and the two looked away awkwardly, their apologies silently accepted and over with.
"...So I think we should not do that again." River nodded eagerly. "...Think we're going the right way?" The two stared at each other intensely, and then the only response was a shrug.

Sam also glanced toward the Ghost-pokemon Trainers, then turned back to Miharu. "It's nice to meet you as well, Miharu. This is Kya, I met her on the ferry to Olivine. We were escaping Cianwood together." Sam laughed nervously. She was no good at face to face interactions usually, unless she truly knew the person. "Um, we were just heading to Goldenrod actually, Kya's parents live there, and I'm on my way to...well somewhere. I can't decide if I should go to Azalea or Violet City for the Gym Badge. Well I think we decided on Violet City...But then I'd have to backtrack. And I don't have a Squirtbottle..." Sam trailed off, looking off into the distance with a blank stare. Kya stepped in, and held out her hand.
"Hello, Miharu! Is this your Ivysaur? She's very pretty! Yes, we are both Pokemon Trainers, though we are both basically just starting. Your Ivysaur could probably wipe out two of my Pokemon easy. And I've only got three!" Kya laughed affably, turning on the charm. She was a very likeable person, and she knew it. But she carried herself humbly, not wanting to come off as arrogant. Sam watched at this masterful exchange. Shoot, why couldn't she be like that? Miharu probably thought she was a little on the stupid side, going all blank in the middle of a conversation.

Carlos had finally calmed down and slowed to walk, also releasing Train's hand. She flexed it a couple of times before looking up at the sky. It was getting pretty dark… There was only a bit of sun left on the horizon, but as she looked at how close they were at this point to Mount Moon, there was no way she was gonna give up on getting there. She picked up the pace a little bit, eyeing the quickly disappearing sun as they drew even nearer to Mount Moon's entrance.+=+=+=+ Leon had since resumed walking, Ghos tucked safely away in his PokéBall again. Muuma perked up suddenly, and floated a little ways ahead of Leon. "Hm?" He mumbled, and Muuma looked back at him happily, then turned back and stared at something, veering off a little from their original direction. Leon followed her gaze and said, "Oh, nice job," as he caught sight of what she had found; the exit. He followed her and soon they had emerged from the forest and out onto the rest of the route leading to Rustboro City. He looked both ways before deciding to take a right, towards what appeared to be a bridge a little ways off in the distance, as opposed to left, which only appeared to have a little house nestled between an opening in the trees.

Miharu nodded politely to Kya, raising an eyebrow as she looked back to Sam. "Escaping... Cianwood?" she repeated, wondering what in Johto these two girls, easily within a year of her own age, could possibly need to escape from. She blinked a few times as Sam continued speaking, quickly getting the impression that she was uncomfortable in this situation. "And yes, her name is Lily," she added, nodding to the grass type. "She's pretty tough, but she's also a bit full of herself."
Lily was quite pleased to be meeting new people, and she preened at Kya's comment (while ignoring Miharu's) before walking right up to her and situating herself at Kya's feet. "Saaaur," she purred happily.
Miharu shook her head and sighed, glad that at least one of them was sociable. "Well, Goldenrod isn't too far from here," she said, nodding. "But, I'm not sure what you would need a squirt bottle for. Violet City is where the first gym is, though if you wanted to get there fast, we could always fly there." Miharu stopped and blinked a few times, quite surprised by herself. Since when do I offer rides to people I barely even know? she thought, but then laughed quietly to herself. She never had been very good at making friends, the fact that the majority of her journey so far had been spent solo proof of that. "If you want, that is. It's only a suggestion."

"So I think we'll make a new addition soon..." Jett mused as he strolled forward, River clinging calmly to his head once more. "It's always good to have back-up, right? And you can make a new friend..." River mulled this over, casting a glance to scurrying Zigzagoon and sleeping Wurmple. After a minute, the Feeling Pokemon gently patted her trainer's head, showing her approval of the matter.
"What do you think we should get?" Jett's eyes flickered over to a quickly fleeing Nincada with slight interest. "Shroomish? Though, we haven't really seen one in this forest... Maybe we'd be good with a Zigzagoon...." There was a quick, irritated chatter from River at this. She didn't like Zigzagoon ever since the encounter with Justin. "All right. I guess we'll know our new team member when we see 'em..."
The two were utterly unaware that they were being watched. Swift as can be, something shifted from bush to bush, never letting Jett Forrest or his Ralts get out of sight. There was a grin in the darkness that vanished as quick as it had come, and a giggle echoed eeriely. Jett paused, turning to the darkness as he felt River cling to him even tighter.
And then something leapt from the shadows, intent upon not letting the two get away.

"W-what the he--"
"TRAINER. YOU WILL NOT ESCAPE ME." The silhouette emerged into sight, revealing a very angry Barry, the master of all Bug Catchers. "YOUR PAST ACTIONS HAVE BOILED MY BLOOD. YOU WILL NOT GET AWAY SO EASILY."
River twitched. Jett stared blankly, and then it all came to him. "O-oh! Right! The Dustox! I am so sorry for that. Really. It's just that River here ran away and she would've gotten lost and you... were there..."
"Your insincere apology is unforgiven, trainer. State your name!" the master of all Bug Catchers demanded loudly.
"I'm Jett Forrest," Jett introduced himself warily. "Look, I am really sorry about that. If I could just--"
"JETT FORREST. YOU ARE NOW MY ARCH-NEMESIS," Barry, the master of all Bug Catchers, screamed. The two shrunk back. "I CHALLENGE YOU TO A BATTLE. PREPARE TO FACE ALL THREE OF MY POKEMON!"
"...I have only one," Jett muttered, picking up River. "And she isn't even at full health... Look, look, can we make this a quick one-on-one battle? I promise, if you meet me in Rustboro, I'll battle all your Pokemon then."
"You must obey the rules, Jett Forrest, arch-nemesis! Prepare yourself! This will be the battle of your life!" Barry, the master of all Bug Catchers, hurled a Pokeball into the air, releasing a Wurmple.
"..." River hopped down without a word, glaring intensely at the foe Wurmple. "Let's make this quick, then."

Sam nodded faintly. "Yeah, escaping. Well I was escaping. Breeder's Gala drama, ick." Sam and Kya both looked to the Ivysaur as it warmed up to Kya. Sam smiled, reminded of her own diva, Star. "Squirtbottle, um...I'm not really sure either. I know my parents a few years back had an issue with a Sudowoodo blocking their path, they had to use a Squirtbottle to get it to move. But why it would still be there I don't know...Sorry I'm kind of rambling, I'm kind of...anti-social. Well not really, just more of I don't have social skills. But its not-"
"Fly? Really? You must be a strong Trainer to be able to use that. Which Gym leader did you have to defeat to gain that ability?" Kya interrupted. Sam looked to her, a tad angry at her intrusion, but mostly grateful for saving her from further embarassment. Kya glanced back at the Ivysaur. "I wouldn't want to impose...besides I'm staying in Goldenrod anyways. Its really up to Sam." Sam shook her head violently.
"No, no, I couldn't! I'm sorry, I can manage on my own of course, and how would you even get your Pokemon back? Unless you came with me, but then your Pokemon must be really strong! I already fell off of one Staravia, and Flygons don't like me- erm...Sorry. I kind of babble around people I like semi-know. It makes no sense." Sam's eyes widened, and shook her head slightly. 'God I must look like a frickin' idiot! What the hell? I was fine at the Breeder's Gala! But I guess that was slightly different. Nobody knew me there...Well technically Miharu doesn't really know me either, but its not like the Breeder's Gala where I would probably never see them again..Oh man I'm going absolutely insane...' Sam inhaled deeply and sighed. Kya kept watching both Lily and Miharu, but she worried for Sam. Sam hadn't given an answer, and instead had just dug herself a rather deep hole.

"Sudowoodo, oh, right," Miharu nodded, trying to remember that route. She'd passed by it on her bike several times and she couldn't recall seeing anything that resembled a Sudowoodo anywhere along there. "Someone must have caught it or something, because it's not there now." She forced a smile, and looked down at Lily, who seemed to be amused by Sam's ramblings. She shuffled forward and let one of her vines rest on the girl's shoulder, as if to say 'don't worry, my trainer's crazy too.'
Miharu looked back to Kya, and nodded a bit sheepishly. "Well, I defeated Chuck, and it was just this morning," she answered, feeling a bit weird for actually saying it out loud. "It was difficult though, and for a while there I wasn't sure we could even win." Lily scoffed loudly from her place next to Sam, but Miharu ignored her, her focus back on Sam. Staravia? Flygons? she thought, slightly intrigued. but figured it would be rude to check in her PokeDex right now. "Uh, don't worry about it. I'm not good with people either," she shrugged, deciding then to recall Lily into her PokeBall. "I offered because it seemed like a nice thing to do," she added, looking back at the brunette. "It's no trouble at all, really. My Pidgeot is very kind, and easily strong enough to carry us both. It's not like I have anything better to do, either." Well, that last statement wasn't entirely true, as she knew she should be starting her training for her next gym match, but it seemed like she'd done a lot lately, and perhaps it was time to tone it down a notch and possibly try to make some friends.
