Woo!I play the Clarinet! whee So far I only used about 4 reeds altogether when I played it, so I guess it's in good condition still. ^^

Really? Our section has every reed known to mankind... I use Rico when marching though.

I've never used flavored reeds... Do they taste good, and play well?

I used Hemke 1 and a 1/2. And some Vandorens too. They're for my alto sax.

Quite true; most regular ricos do have bad tone, but I've been playing alto sax for 7 years, and the ONLY reed I'll sound good on now is a Rico Jazz 4. I went from using a vandoren 2 1/2 to 3 during junior high, then jumped to 4 (rico jazz). It took me 3 months to get a good sound out of that reed, but now I'm jammin like crazy. It really is a good reed.

All in all, if you want a good reed, use vandoren 2 thru 3, but if they get too 'squeaky' like they did for me, then move to rico jazz 3 1/2 to 4 1/2. It has a much better tone once you get used to it.

(BTW, I'm the section leader in my band, so I should know this stuff. It's true for all single reed players.)

Reeds don't worsen the condition of an instrument, buddy. (Unless you're really skilled and crack it, then shoot it through your horn and get it stuck in one of the keys, like I did. xd )

My BD gives out Ricos to the clarinets, at least that's what he gave me when I bought some over the summer. Last week I saw a base clarinetists buy a Vandoren reed. I'm considering buying a few of those from my BD even though I've got 3 extra Ricos in my case. Vandoren reeds play so much better.

Also, I've got a question. Right now I'm a freshman, I've been playing for 5 1/2 years, and I use a size 3 reed. Region Band auditions are coming up in the winter, and I wonder if I should switch up to a 3 1/2? If I do decide to go up one, I would want to do it soon so I can get used to playing my scales and solos comfortably.

Only do so if you feel you squeak too much or can't hit some notes. Other than that, if those don't apply to you, just keep doing what you're doing.

I'm very new to reed instruments and I have no idea what kind of reed I use!

I just started bassoon, and I wnated to know if anyone here ever got small splits in their lips when they first started off with reed instruments...

I'm used to brass instruments, and I've noticed that when I play the bassoon, I get small cuts on my bottom lip, and I really need to know if that's normal, or if I should just not play a double reed instrument.

Well, if it's ON your lip, then you should just see how it goes for another week. If it continues, then ask your bd about it.

Other than that, when I first started the alto sax, I got some cuts on the inside of my lower lip. Now, my skin there is really resistant, so it doesn't happen at all anymore, no matter how long I play.

Don't buy flavored ones e.e. If you squeak, you sould like a goose and they make your lip colored.
