Kaleb found the job of being a good listener to be much more challenging than he had anticipated, particularly because Relm's magic completely distracted him. It was fascinating, since he had no appreciable skill for illusionary magic, Kaleb was appropriately awed by his friend's mastery over it.

The little healer tried to set aside his thoughts on the magic a bit so he could concentrate on what Relm was actually saying to him. In all honesty, he would have loved to see more of her magic. but instead of asking he just smiled lopsidedly. "If it's a happy feeling, maybe you just need to get used to it. Any change takes some adjustment."

"Yeah... I guess you're right." Relm shook her head, laughing at herself. It was funny, suddenly being the same age as everyone. Sometimes she still thought of herself as being only 10 -or was she 11 by the time they had saved their world? Did it really matter now? Her age? It had been so much of an issue in Thamasa... she was too informed... had too different of a gift in her magic to really be close to any of the other children there. And of course to the adults she was always a child. She quirked her head at Kaleb curiously as she wondered how old he was. Or how old Keme was for that matter. She laughed & brushed it aside. Most seemed to think she was the elder sister, but the pictomancer knew Rikku had 17years of experience in her before. It was an interesting if diverting thought.

"I guess it's like being in a dessert. You want water, dream of water... but then when suddenly faced with the ocean..." She spread her hands & shrugged her shoulders with an almost embarrassed look on her face. "It's almost too much. You're afraid of drowning."

"At the same time -it's the most wonderful thing ever. You want to dive right in."

Kaleb returned her curious look with a confused blush, wondering why she was looking at him like that. "I-it sounds kind of frightening, I don't think I would be able to handle it," he replied quietly, caressing the edge of his book with one finger. He had always been prone to fearing things, and in a way, falling in love was one of those things. He certainly didn't want to be falling anywhere.

((*laughs at self & goes to change "dessert" to "desert"; sheepish*))

Relm grinned. "Sure you would. Like you said, just need to get used to it. It's worth it. It really is."

Then she chuckled silently. "But you'd feel better talking about magic wouldn't you?"

Kaleb blushed brightly, he would feel much more comfortable discussing magic, but he didn't think it would be polite to say that out loud. Magic was a nice safe topic. "I-I w-would really like to see more of your magic sometime," he said in a timid voice, indirectly answering her question. He really hoped he wasn't stepping over any bounds or anything, some mages could be rather touchy when it came to unique forms of magic.

No need to worry there. Relm was as much an actress at times as she was a painter & loved the attention. She beamed with pride, her eyes lighting up with delight. "You would? Really?"

The hint of disbelief in her words could easily be attributed to the president of ShinRa's snub on magic appearing to be a snub on her type of magic with a tinge of concern that perhaps if Kaleb had started working for them that he felt the same. Still, her hand clutched her brush eagerly a threads of magic started to pool around its tip.

Kaleb was delighted that Relm was so willing to show off, and he grinned lopsidedly as he nodded in response to her question. "I-I really like seeing what magic other people can do. It's fascinating, and sometimes the concepts can help with my own research, even if I can't perform the spell myself." Caught up in his excitement, the little mage didn't seem to display quite so many nervous behaviors as he usually did, and even managed to look up for more than a few seconds at a time so he could watch without missing anything.

Noting the change in his behavior Relm grinned. "All right. You asked for it!"

Relm played with the threads of magic. Of course to her, they were like an artist's palate. She mixed her "colors", dipped her brush & "painted" Kaleb. Tweaking the magic both within her & without she held the duplicate in her "control" and caused the life-sized fully dimensional painting to make a silly face & wave eagerly.

She nibbled at the corner of her lip lightly, a feint line of concentration forming on her forehead. "The minute movements.... are a lot more difficult." Relm explained.

Kaleb's eyes widened and his mouth fell open a bit, and then a bright blush streaked across his muzzle. He hadn't expected her to paint him. "Th-that's amazing," he said, torn between watching the 'painting' in front of them, and ducking his head a bit to hide his blush. In the end he couldn't help but smile back at the image.

If possible, Relm beamed even more. "Thanks! I usually control paintings for combat."

Releasing the "hold" on the painting Kaleb's current movements Relm’s eyes moved as if they might be reading down a list. They widened slightly as she did so & the pictomancer breathed an incredulous "... espers..." Picking a shield spell Relm "controlled" the double to cast it. Now the magic would be something very familiar to the scholarly mage as his duplicate cast the shield exactly as he would have done.

Kaleb's eyes went wider than before as he was simultaneously stunned and awed by the image's movements. "Th-thats..." He couldn't find the right words to express himself, it was absolutely astounding to see what looked like himself cast his own unique shield spell, and it was even more astounding that he could feel the magic behind the shield and recognise it as his own type. "H-how do you get the energy for that shield?" He finally asked, glancing over at Relm with an expression of amazement.

Shield cast, Relm just let the simulacrum rest. She tilted her head almost apologetically at Kaleb. "I... don't know really. Some from myself some from around. When I "control" something I can get it to do almost anything that the original can. No combining of skills; just one thing off the list at a time. Maybe 'cause it's already magic it's easier to use magic. I'm really not sure. I... do have a limit. When I first started adventuring I had much less control, the attack was random. But by the end... well... I was much better."

The duplicate Kaleb just stood there placid. It did not move, not even to imitate breathing. A thin line of magic trailed between it & Relm's hand through her brush but it was if all the strings that had been moving it while controlled had condensed to one that now hung almost limp.

((*giggles* I love making up & describing how magic works.))

Kaleb found that lack of explanation almost as fascinating as the magic itself. He had a large measure of innate skill and capacity for casting magic, but no innate magic abilities, so he had to know how his magic worked and how it was formed. "Th-that's amazing," he said in a quiet and awed voice, glancing between her and the still image of himself.

Always the researcher, the little mage had what felt like hundreds of questions he wanted to ask. "How can you tell which spells I know?"

((Indeed. XD ))

Relm grinned. "It's odd, that, because it shows up kind of like a list. In my handwriting too; like when I make notes on the side of a canvas for other things I might want to do later, or elements I would like to try & bring in. Each spell or ability is given a name. Like Attack."

Flicking her brush again the strands separated. The simulacrum un-slumped, walked over to a tree & kicked it. The pictomancer giggled, thinking that Kaleb probably attacked much like she did. "Of course, I don't always know what they mean... but sometimes that's part of the fun."

Kaleb listened attentively, only looking away briefly to watch and smile at the image of himself. His mind ran through all sorts of questions, like how the list was organized, and if it was all visible at once, and even if the names for each spell on her list were the same as the names he had given them. Then he wondered what his unnamed spells would look like, since he only had names for the most basic, and the strongest which had usually been named by his friends or professors.

Then something in her last sentance struck him. "Y-you don't always know what you're having the image cast?" He asked in a nervous voice, fidgeting a bit. That thought made him rather frightened, because his own spells weren't always helpful. In the course of his experimentation he had often stumbled across destructive elements. He shuddered at the thought of ever actually using them, but they would likely still appear as spells he knew.
