((Alas! Finally, the urge to procrastinate has taken over!))

Laurentius stared the four girls down. After a very long pause, he finally spoke. "If she is not here in three--"

"My apologies, your Majesty." He was interrupted as the third servant appeared in front of him.

"Good," he said sharply. "Now would you please tell me why my daughters were running about the forest unescorted like commonfolk?"

"It is my fault, Father," Ismeine said, boldly stepping forward yet still keeping her eyes to the floor. "I went in of my own free will. They followed out of concern for my safety." She silently prayed he would never hear of the Jahrran knight.

Laurentius paused. "Your disobedience will be punished shortly. As for now, servants, tell me why you decided you needed to follow her rather than alert me so I could send strong and able knights after her?"

Merewyn remained silent during this exchange. She trembled, knowing that her father chose to leave her out of the discussion because he had intentions of speaking to her privately. Questions played across her mind: Does he know of my interaction with Sir Laurence? Did I act improperly around him? Ismeine seemed to think so; did she tell him? No, Merewyn, do not be ridiculous. Did I do anything wrong?

The men finally packed up, and they rode back to the castle without any further problems. Once there, Laurence gave his horse to the stable boy and, without further adieu, went to report to the king.

"Did you find anything?" the king asked once Laurence had bowed in.

The knight braced himself. He had thought about this the whole ride home and had decided to tell the absolute truth. The truth shall set thee free, he quoted to himself before answering, "Yes, Sire, but no threats. We encountered four maidens; they all claimed to be maids, but my suspicions are that two of them were Merewyn and Ismeine de Maisone, daughters of Laurentius de Maisone."

((Okey smokey, back to work. sweatdrop ))

Azalia kept her eyes glued to the floor and her mouth shut. She knew it was bad not to answer him, but she couldn't think of anything to say. She had followed Merewyn, but didn't want to place the blame on her, because she could have ran back. She hoped any of the other girls would come up with something quick.

"our Majesty," Scarlet began, "If you were to send a strong, able force after her, would that not only cause a resentment, a rebelliousness only quenched with going out into the woods, or further, at another time? I followed to help bring them back and to assure that some kind of immediate help would not be needed. I am sure that being chased by figures unable to be made out in the dark in the woods would certainly give any young lady a fright, and would hate to find out her father was in charge of it." Scarlet said. She hoped she hadn't said too much or that her tongue wouldn't get her in trouble. In her head she paryed, Lord, please forgive my lies...

Inira couldn't think of anything to say, even that she wasn't following Ismeine, which she wasn't. She knew that if it were found out that she had taken one of the horses out at night, the minimum punishment would be a flogging. She took a silent, deep breath, hoping the king would think rationally.

Ame groomed her mare when she returned. "I wonder how Sir Laurence is doing at the moment...?" she whispered to herself. She looked at her horse. "D'you think a war shall escalate?" Her horse snorted. "I'll take that as a 'I'll get back to you on that.'"

((Well, first Sean came in on his staflyer account and made his apoc (now caustic) account captain. then there was a big tizzy about that and some people sent in nasty PMs, which wasn't nice and then he said he was going to leave and then it was like, sorry, please stay, so he did but there's still be some people (I dunno who) who say they don't like the way he runs things. You missed a lot.))

((Oh... weird.... I don't like change. >.< I'm sure caustic will do splendidly, though.

Okay, Jewlz, how did you figure out my surprise ending for the RP?! Wait... you're not one of THEM, are you??))

Furious that the servant had been able to give a logical response, the king drew a deep breath that he hoped would make him look bigger and more foreboding.

"I will decide the best way to retrieve my daughters, thank you!" he roared. As he continued to rant at all present in the room, however, the realization dawned that he had no reasonable charges on which to behead them or even fire them. He finally decided a threat would do just nicely.

"If this happens again, the consequences will be dire! Servants, leave here, and whichever one of you is the princesses' maid will start making plans for Ismeine's wedding now! Prince Aureo is in the weaponry room adjacent to this one if you must speak with him. Ismeine, hold your tongue, you will do as I say!" he finished as Ismeine let out a cry of protest. "Leave here, I must speak with your sister!"

Enraged, Ismeine stormed quite unlady-like out of the room, leaving Merewyn with the king.

*

Long after Laurence had left, the king still pondered the interesting news. The twin princesses in the forest? He could hardly believe it. But Laurence was his best, most perceptive knight; surely he would not say so without being almost certain. But what would they have been doing? Spying? Of course not. What kind of king would send his daughters to spy for him? Still, the circumstances were suspicious. He must find a way to question them.

The king paused as this last thought entered his brain. Kidnapping two young ladies, princesses no less, would be quite ruthless of him. He would remain restless, however, until he found out what they were doing in the forest that adjoined the warring kingdoms. Having made his decision, he called a different knight to the room; one of his more cunning and ruthless knights.

"Yes, your majesty," Azaliz replied quietly, curtseying deeply. She hurried after Ismeine. "Ismeine, wait!" She called. She did not want the wedding to happen, either, but she knew storming off would only result in another episode similar to the one they'd just had.
