The Break Up Natsumi pays Newt a visit with some bad news. Natsumi: Deep breath... Just relax. This wasn't hard, she wasn't even technically breaking up with him. She was simply bringing over a get well present and giving back the necklace she felt like she couldn't keep. They hadn't even been dating, she couldn't brak up with him... So why did it feel like she was? Ugh. The poor little Japanese girl's head was already starting to hurt as she neared Newt's duplex, double checking the number, then checking to make sure she had everything. Get well basket.. Check, necklace... check, courage... No check. Swallowing, she lifted a webbed hand to lightly rap on the door, straighting herself up as her stomach twisted. There was a picnic basket in one hand, something she had salvaged from the main building to serve as her get well basket, around it's was a bow, tied neatly with a local flower tucked into the knot. Inside were as many bugs she had managed to find, worms, beatles, alot of the things he had brought to the picnic, all alive and trying to get out of the tightly sealed basket. It'd taken awhile to get them all, but she was hoping it'd be worth it. She was dressed casually, hair done up like it always was, the necklace had been moved to a pocket instead of around her neck, and a nervious smile topped it all off. Newton: After the knock, there was the sounds of distant music being dimmed and a flicker at the drawn curtains as someone peered out to see who it was. She could almost hear the squeek of terror befor the duplex fell silent again. Natsumi: Natsui waited, heartbeat rising in anticipation for the anxiety producing interactions that were sure to follow. She didn't always understand what people were saying, but she wasn't cumb... Thom had told her Newt liked her, which meant giving back the gift wasn't going to be a good thing... And Newt was already so shy to begin with. Speaking of shy, she caught sight of the curtains falling shut, the gecko in her mind breifly worrying that some sort of predator had just tried to pop out of nowhere before her mind could regester what that had been. And when it did, she frowned alittle, waiting to see if that squeak meant he was going to open the door or not... Gaius had said he wasn't looking that great. When no responce seemed to come, she knocked again, trying to speak up through the door "Newton-san?" She started, leaning in "I brought you a feel better gift." Newton: What was Natsumi doing here?? Of course she'd come by, she had to have come by sooner or later, right? Newt leaned against the door, his heart racing as he clutched his swollen stomach. He couldn't let her see him like this! He couldn't... but he had to see her eventually right? But not... he wasn't ready! He didn't even have any proper clothes to try to hide it... he was practically in his underwear! She could hear a terrified ribbit through the door befor his voice wobbled out, "KrrKIT! I... I'm n-not home!" Natsumi: Natsumi frowned alittle, debating wether or not she should just leave the get well present and flee, give up on the whole 'sorry heres your necklace' stress. He didn't sound well enough as it was... She didn't want ot add to that. Not home...? A brow raised. That was a pretty silly thing to say... "Newton-san..." She frowned, pausing... she could run, she really could... Nono! She'd run from everything enough. She'd been running from her problems since she got here... Hiding from them. Heck runing from a problem was the reason she wound up here in the first place. No leaving, no hiding. Deep breaths. "Gaius told me about your change... So I brought you this... And I need to talk with you." Oh the dreaded we need to talk, she paused a moment, before adding one last thing "You are home." Newton: "N-no I"m n-not! G-gaius... g-giaus w-was lying!"* Natsumi: "Why would he lie..? And if he did then why are you hiding?" She argued, frowning even more as she tried to be more forward than she ever liked to be, but it was kind of hard to play the submissive role when the person you were with beat you in every area on it. This was turning out to be more work than she'd imagined. She'd atleast thought she might make it through the door before it got complicated. Newton: "I... I'm n-not hiding!" Newton was a terrible lier. Maybe she'd go away if he kept at it? No, he didn't want her to go away. He wanted her to come in and tell him it would be alright, that he was still a beautiful person on the inside and she loved him anyway. He didn't see that happening, though. So instead he called out, "J-just... j-just leave me alone! KrrKIT!" Natsumi: Mn.. headache. "Then let me in...?" She asked, almost pathetically. Her senses were going crazy with her back turned to God knew what, blindly facing the door, without any good places to hide. The gecko wa screaming this was a bad idea, and the human was starting to think that too. She stepped back from the door as the next part reached her. Leave him alone? There was a mixed feeling in that, one she was slightly mad he was taking it this way... the other was hurt that he actually wanted her to go away. She wasn't in love with him, but she still liked him, he was still a nice person to be around... "Alright." she shifted, kneeling to place the basket down, digging the necklace out of her pocket and placing it ontop. If he wanted her to go, then she would, she wasn't one to fight people. She went to turn and leave at that, before getting a pang of guilt and moving back to the door "If you need anything just call... Friends are there for eachother, ne?" Newton: His own guilt finally bubbled up and he deflated, taking a deep breath. Finally, the door cracked open and a large green eye peered out, "G-gaius w-wasn't l-lying...." Natsumi: She was about to leave, when the door cracked open, almost regretably so... She'd almost made it out without having to deal with the stressful confession, but when she saw a little green eye poke out she momentarily forgot about the whole speech of staying friends, Gaius indeed hadn't been lying... He looked very... Changed, what she could see anyways. With a frown, she kneeled to meet his froggy level, then offering a reassuring yet sad smile. "It is not that bad..." she tried, the eyes were pretty cute infact. Like some of the keychains she'd had in middleschool. Yea, that was a more positive approach. Newton: He made a little noise in his throat as though trying to ribbit and not ribbit at the same time befor hopping back away from the door to open it for her. What she could see of his duplex interior was shocking on some levels... and yet in others very unsuprising. The carpet was as muddy as ever, his bathtub still converted into a permenant source of swampy wet, large piles of mud brought in from the outdoors to house ferns and vines he had planted fomr the outdoors to make the place seem more habitable, and his workbench covered in his bug-traps were as effective as ever, filling the room with buzzing and whirling insects all trying to get at the delicious scent of his carefully created composts.* Natsumi: She smiled alittle as the door opened up, moving forward to a stand, grabbing up the basket and necklace in one fluid motion. The jewlery was held tightly in her palm, trying to hide it for the most part until she was ready to get to that part of this visit, which was feeling less and less like something she wanted to do. But then she was met with the sight of mud... And not just that 'oh i tracked some in on my big enourmous feet' it was like... a swamp. It came as a bit of a shock, newt was a janitor afterall... But who was she to judge? She was the one who wanted to dig a hole in the beach and live in it afterall. So she entered, trying to ignor the weird uncomfortable feeling of mud on her bare feet. The buzzing of insects made her wonder if she even needed to bring a basket... but it was the thought that counted, right? So, now that she'd made it inside, she turned to greet him and hold out the basket with a reassuring smile. Newton: Carefully, timidly, he peered out at her from behind the door, a hand raised to cover his scraggly, nearly-bald head befor he finally closed the door to keep the bugs inside and hte preditors out, reveiling his now rather rutound form. The muddy bathing suit indeed left little to the imagination, his large, cream colored froggish belly quite the contrast to his previously skin-and-bones frame. He didn't notice the basket, his eyes lowered shamefully as he waited to hear her reaction. Natsumi: The door closed, and she had to hold back a distasteful look at the sight she got. It didn't look like newt at all, chubby slimey thing... Ech. But... Despite the look on the outside, she mentally reminded herself no one was goign to look good. And atleast he didn't look like he was about to eat her alive. So she held her smile, if not a bit of a wavered one, and continued to hold the basket out. "Here." She urged when he didn't seem to notice it. Newton: He glanced up, eyes trembling as he blinked at it, "Ah.. w-what is...?" Natsumi: She held it out further, shifting so that she didn't slip in the mud, "A feel better present." Newton: He shifted befor finally hopping towards her to take it, biting his lip as he did so. It was evident he was still getting used to the weight shift, as well as the self conciousness of his current appearence. "S-so... so he w-was right, w-wasn't he?" He murmured quietly, settign the basket down in front of him to peer inside curiously. He didn't get presents often! But the joy was rather dampened by the situation. Natsumi: She offered the basket forward, using her free hand to gather the hem of her skirt so she could kneel without it dipping into the mud, which she then did so. "Who? Gaius-san?" Was that the "he" Newton was reffering too? She was a bit thrown off because.. well. It was fairly obvious Gaius had been right that Newt changed. When the little basket was opened, a few bugs that were just waiting for release spilled out of it, though there were probably more bugs in the room than in the basket ther ewas still a fairly decent amount. Especially for Natsumi, who had plenty of trouble catching the crawlies without aid of a projectile tongue or any other abilities. And in the middle was a bottle of asprin, though it was a tad late for his changes. Newton: Newt nodded, giving a little suprised cry as the bugs scattered, and without thinking his tongue snapped to work to quickly catch them with a delightfull crunch and slurp. Natsumi: Natsumi half smiled, half cringed. On the one hand, it was good that he was eating them... On the other. Ew. Bugs. She still couldn't settle her human mind with that no matter how many she ate. Her hand shifted tighter on the jewerly... Now the hard part... Which was then put off alittle bit longer. "Other than the change..Have you been well?" Newton: Other than the change. So she was avoiding the subject. He didn't blame her. He swallowed, throat inflating slightly in an embarassed fashion, "KrrKIT! Ah.. er... y-yes... I sup-suppose... I... I f-fixed M-mr. S-sid's t-typewriter for him! It w-was a b-bit tricky but rather a f-fun p-puh-puzzle." His wide mouth trembled into a Newtish smile. Natsumi: She wasn't nessicarily avoiding it, just it was fairly obvious how he'd been when it came to that subject, there was mud everywhere and he obviously was a bit selfconcious... Which meant 'not good' as far as how he'd been. But then again, maybe that was avoiding it... Who really wanted to talk about that? "That is nice." She smiled, somewhat impressed "I could never.." Good good he was smiling. She hated when people were upset. Newton: "I've.. always b-been g-good with g-gadgets," He admitted with a touch of pride. Natsumi: "That is amazing!" she complimented, smiling alittle more, tail shifting to curl up around her legs. Alright... Just do it... Her stomach twisted and her expression dropped alittle, "Newton san..." Just do it... her eyes shifted to a wall, as her hand moved forward to uncurl and hold the necklace out to him. "I.. I can not take this. I... I think you should give it to a better girl... I mean, i think you are great but.. I ... " As quick as it all seemed to blurt out it all came to a stop, leaving her with nothing to say or do. Newton: The brows above his enormous eyes on his forheadless head forrowed as he looked down at it in confusion, "B-better... b-but I d-don't... know of any b-better g-girl for it," His nervious smile returned as he twisted his hands demurely. Natsumi: Guh, why couldn't this be easy... Like one of that dating sims games her brother had borrowed from a friend. You mess up, you just restart the game, simple as that. Heck, she'd even take just getting mutiple choice answeres. She tried to give him a reassuring smile, "But... I do not think I am the one for it.. I mean... It is really nice, and you are nice and... You can find someone who is just wonderful for you..." The more she talked, the more awkward everythign seemed to feel and get, only leaving her words more and more awkward. Newton: Things seemed to slowly come together in the timid frog-man's mind, and his eyes suddenly widened, "Y-you... I... I... it..." He stammered, not sure what to say, although it was difficult to hide the growing tears in his enormous eyes. Natsumi: She couldn't hold back a little frown as it seemed to hit Newt what she was trying to get across, guilt sweeping over her... Part of her desperatly wants to just pretend she liked him, make him happy, she felt he deserved it... But the other part of her wanted her to be happy, somewhat selfish but... In this case, weren't you supposed to be selfish? And if she wasn't happy, but went along with it, she'd just wind up hurting him further... Kinda like what was happening now. But the part of her that wanted him to be happy urged her to keep speaking, and mentally wish he knew Japanese... It would have been so much easier to try something this complicated in her native language. "But... You are great. You are smart, and funny, and you build wonderful things..." she tried to give a reassuring smile, despite how bad she felt for that teary eyed look growing in his expression. "It is just.. Me... I..." she trailed off again, pausing to try and figure out what else she could possibly say. Newton: He fell silent, lips pressed as he stared at the necklace being handed back to him. "Ah.... oh." It was difficult to tell exactly what he was feeling, and the absence of his usual tremble was undoubtably odd. Natsumi: Natsumi fell silent at the oh, teeth digging into her bottum lip, she'd said it all, so now she just had to wait and see if he had anything else he wanted to say before chaning the subject as fast as she could, to something more happy. Something friends would talk about. Her stomach turned some more in the silence, making her glad she hadn't had too much for breakfast. Newton: He opened his mouth and closed it a few times, silently attempting to form words but seemed inable. "I... I'm s-sorry... t-to... to h-have.. t-to have b-bothered you..." He managed finally, in a strained, forced voice, and finally took the offered jewerly stiffly. Natsumi: She swallowed hard, shaking her head allitle and drawing her hand back as the jewelry was taken... Step one... "No... You have not bothered me." She corrected, with a tiny smile, "It made me happy." And it had, at the time, it'd been wonderful to hear she was liked, and part of her really wished she could give him the same. But that would be lieing, and lieing was bad... Her mouth opened to try and find a subject change, but the air had suddenlly gotten tense, no suprise really... So she gave an awkward expression, "I... Should go then?" She offered, juding by the look on his face now might not be the best time to linger around for casual conversation. Newton: "If.... if y-you w-want..." He murmured distractedly. Keep your breathing even. Don't look up. His eyes were locked on the necklace in his hand, but the tremble had returned to his eyes. How long had she felt this way? How long had he been making a fool of himself? The girl had just had a miscarriage! She was young and afraid and upset about turning into a lizard! Of COURSE she wouldn't... not to mention the fact he was a fat ugly frog, that didn't help matters either, did it? By the time the tremble had reached his hands again, he couldn't see it from the water that had welled up in his massive eyes. Natsumi: She frowned alittle, "I can stay as well." Goodness this was hard, why did she have to pine for attention like that? If she'd just said this to begin with it wouldn't have been so bad, would it? Atleast he still would have had his hair back then. She tilted her head, to catch his expression, which was sadder than she coul dhave hoped, big watery frog eyes had to be the most pitiful thing on the planet, far worse than any puppy eyes someone could pull up. She felt a pang of guilt, leaning forward and letting her knees and skirt drop into the mud to draw him into a friendly hug. "Gomen..." She mumbled, then quickly corrected herself. "Sorry." Newton: He flinched backward as though stung by her touch, his throat pouches inflating and he gave a defensive croak. Natsumi: She gave the breif tighten of a hug before quickly dropping it, and backing off. That would be the sign that she needed to leave, let him come talk to her if he wanted, but until then she felt like she might get a 'you've done enough' responce. "Sorry." she repeated, then stood, quickly moving to the door to retreat. "Please feel well... and be safe." A hand went to the handle, lingering there to wait to open it. Newton: "Ah-" He opened his mouth to try to speak, but whatever it was that made him stutter also strangled his voice in the back of his throat untill th eonly thing that could come out was a dismayed ribbit. He wanted to say "Stop!" He wanted to say "But I love you!" He wanted to ask if it had been the party or the way he dressed or if he should ask the labs for a wig and a girdle, but he couldn't even bring himself to speak. "KrrKIT!" The frog spoke for him. Natsumi: It looked like maybe he wanted to say something... But then there wasn't anything. Just a frog noise... Which was sad too, who wouldn't feel sorry for someone like that? Especially when you felt like you may have just crushed them. "Bye." She spoke up after the ribbit, opening the door and peering out to do her routine check before she could fully move out. Newton: He let her go, clutching the necklace stiffly as he did so and concentrated on breathing. In... out... krrKIT... In... Out... Natsumi: Coast was clear, Newt didn't have anything more to say... And she was out, shutting the door behind her and hurrying back down the paths to her duplex. There... It was done... With that thought came a mixture of releif and guilt... Thos normal thoughts that came with such things, what if you messed up and all the sorts. But it was done now. Newton: Once left alone, the frog-man dropped the necklace as though burned. With a strangled, miserable ribbit, he lept to his overflooded bathroom to sink deep into his mudbath and cry where the world couldn't see him. The wet dirt was all he needed, imagining it to be invisible arms around him in a gentle hug. It was alright, it was fine, really. She didn't want him. He didn't blame her. His father had so often reminded him how he wasn't wanted, it was a familiar feeling. It didn't make it hurt any less, though. And so, sunk into his mud, the frog cried his little aching heart out over the gecko he had tried to woo so hard.

Cody Archer In front of the door of your duplex lies a small gift wrapped in regular paper by a string. There are some words scribbled with ordinary pen, saying: "Merry Xmas. From Cody" The gift On a small piece of paper under it is written "Sorry" ((Cody doesn't remember the number of most of the duplexes his friends live in, so he painted gifts for everyone))

Outside your door Christmas morning sits an unusual sight… a coconut. But this one has been cut open, the insides cleaned out, and part of the top made into a base of sorts for it to sit on… And on the side is painted a bright green "N". On a note inside it: Quote: Merry Christmas Newt!
Great work on the project, keep on trucking! Hope you have a happy holiday!

Natsumi Tanaka One of the many Christmas gifts would grace another doorstep, this one happend to come late at night, after the sun had set. A paper crane with red and green painted tips, was placed carefully on the doorstep, a small stone settled on one wing to keep it from blowing away in any gust of wind. Underneith was a folded note, carefully written on torn-off peice of notebook paper.

Newton Filinas Another day, and Newt was almost through his afternoon routine. Mornings consisted of waking up, locating some breakfast (larger and larger things he could find, these days, although those tended to be more difficult to catch. He usually ended up emptying out one or two of his bug traps for breakfast and a piece of toast and a cup of tea.) and then he was off for his rounds. When he had been a janitor, he had had a tight schedule. Wake up before the labtechs, water all the indoor flora, sweep out the animal's cages, remove all of the garbage out into the large dumpsters behind the main building, then enjoy a cup of tea and something to eat and avoid those security guards like the island's resident bovine who had taken it upon themselves to make sure his life remained miserable. When caught in situations like that, it was a matter of regaining his composure before moving in to answer any clean-up calls on his radio. Then it was a strict schedule to be able to empty all of the trashcans in his section by the end of the night before his superior yelled at him for taking too long, and a mop up of his assigned halls and wings. This all dotted by the occasional snuck cigarette, it was a fairly repetitive lifestyle. He'd filled this void for structure by coming up with his own new schedule that involved searching for any little bits of wire, plastic caps, pieces of wood or used tin cans from the cafeteria dumpster to form his hoard. Fidgeting with little things kept him busy and he liked it. He wasn't as extravagant or useful as Gaius and his construction, but he was happy to be of any help to the pegasas-to-be that he could manage. It was approaching noon, and getting fairly hot out, despite the clouds, and his beach-combing rounds had brought him to sit froggishly in the surf, staring down at his large flat feet with a wide-mouthed frown. Emerwyn Emerwyn had spent the night in her little stranded position where she and Thom had departed. She never did have a problem sleeping in the jungle. As a matter of fact, that was where she always slept nowadays. However, never had she shut her eyes to unfamiliar sights and smells. She was still stranded, unable to hunt her way out. The girl had probably wandered in so deep that all sense of direction had been thoroughly mangled up, much as she thought when she'd met with the giant cobra. Giving up finally, the Doe curled up in some thick undergrowth and fell asleep. When she awoke, it was to find that the morning had already begun to wane. Momentarily fazed though she was at having slept so late, she quickly resumed her hunt for a way 'out of the woods.' It was at least a large relief that food was not hard to come by, at least for her. She could not to any extent imagine the horror of feeling the urge to actually eat a fellow - 'human being.' In her musings, she did not notice the distinct smell of salt water, and the faint sound of rushing waves until she was nearly out of the thick. Noticing it, however, Emerwyn felt the urge to continue. She could then see the sun, learning her direction, and she could have a straighter path to the duplexes. It wasn't that she'd stay there when she returned, no. She just needed to know where she was. It was important to her human self. Emerging from the thick foliage, she squinted her eyes tightly at the sudden bright light, reflecting on the hot, white sands. In the distance, she could see a little squatting figure, very near the water. Perhaps he, or she, would know how far away the village was. Emerwyn made her way towards him. Newton Filinas He was a fat little fellow, all green froggish skin and silly lily-pad decorated swim trunks (thanks to the labs), and his feet now had completely disappeared under the rushing sand and water, although his frown still remained, wide bulbous eyes watering slightly at some unspoken memory. Emerwyn Emerwyn's hair was all a mess, dirt and the like caught in it, her green clothing now quite faded. However, her bright eyes stood out from them. And those bright eyes had laid themselves upon those large, sad, green ones before. She recognized him, however vaguely, from their brief, and thoroughly awkward meeting. Hoping to make amends, she smiled warmly. "Good afternoon," she said. "I do believe we have met before... though I daresay our meeting was interrupted." Newton Filinas At the sound of an approaching person, Newt gave a startled croak and instinctively made to hop away. Unfortunately, with his feet so thoroughly anchored in the sand, he merely managed to straighten up to his nearly forgotten six and a half feet before being snapped back down onto his back in the sand with a startled expression, "Ah.... ah... I... I hadn't h-heard y-you... ah... c-coming!" He squeaked as though that explained everything. Emerwyn Emerwyn started back in surprise when the froggy fellow made such a ruckus at being startled himself. "Oh! I am so, so sorry. I did not mean to frighten you..." She walked around him, and leaned over, offering her arm to help him up. Newton Filinas His throat trembled as he watched the hoof-like hand for a moment before timidly taking it to help him at least sit, his feet anchored deeply. "I... I... ah... w-was s-sinking," he explained, "I... ah... hadn't r-really... s-since I... ah... f-for a while." He wriggled an ankle, trying to free up the large appendage. He... somewhat remembered the deer, but couldn't for the life of him remember her name. Not even the beginnings of it came to his sticky tongue and that made him feel even worse. Emerwyn "Please," She finished helping him to a sitting position, and actually sat down on the moist ground beside him. "You needn't explain yourself..." She looked out across the ocean before them. The horizon was high from her low position. "The water is wide... Cannot see what lies beyond it. It is hard to think that anything truly does exist at the water's end." She turned back to the frog. "My name is Emerwyn. And we may both feel as fools, for your name also lies forgotten in the dusty attic of my mind." Newton Filinas Newt wiped his cheek with a slimy arm as he watched her curiously. Goodness, did she speak strangely! "Ah... I'm er... N-newton. N-newton F-filinas. Er... m-most p-people c-call me N-newt, although I'm... n-not s-sure I like that," He offered her a timid smile. "Er... I've... n-never heard of th-the n-name Emuh-muh... Emerwuh.... Emerwoo... aaah... er... y-your n-name b-before... wh-where d-does it come from?" Emerwyn "Newton..." She nodded. She preferred that one to Newt. After all, it was a terrible notion, that he should be one amphibian and named for another. "Emerwyn. Though, I have known friends to call me 'Emer.' Like you, I am not certain how I feel about the nickname, but it is endearing in its own right. The name comes from old Celtic roots, though I dare say my parents spiced it up a little." She smirked a little. Her parents never did tell her just why they'd named her the way they did. So, in her youth, she'd spun her own fanciful tales as she would. Her favorite was that she had been named for a great warrior woman of the old, from the ancient woods of Britain. She was one who led many people, and loved one man. How far her 'descendant' had fallen. Newton Filinas "M-m-might be easier to s-say," He smiled weakly. For some reason he wasn't so nervous around her. Maybe inwardly the frog knew a deer wasn't going to bother it. He gave his foot another tug, trying to pull it free with a jerking motion that sent sand spraying over his flat face and round front. "Ah... b-blast!" Emerwyn "If you wish, you may also call me by that name." Emerwyn flinched as Newt valiantly tried to free himself from the sand trap. Wiping away sand that had flown her way, she leaned over to Newt. "Would you like a hand? If I dig the sand away, you should be able to free yourself." Newton Filinas "I... er... if... if y-you could?" His sad, wide froggy smile wavered slightly as he shifted to give her better access to his still stuck ankle. Emerwyn Curling her hoofs into makeshift shovels, Emerwyn scooped at the sand around Newt's foot. She moved gingerly, as not to scratch his soft froggy skin. Soon enough, Emerwyn's 'fingers' were lodged with sand, the foot had ample room to remove itself. Newton Filinas "Er... th-thank you," Once freed, he hopped backward to shake the sand from his rolled up jumper and the remnants of his scraggly hair. Emerwyn "Do not think on it - my pleasure." She smiled. Then, suddenly, the woman remembered why she had approached Newton in the first place. "Newton," she said. "You wouldn't happen to know which way the village is. You see, I got myself quite disoriented in the trees and vines the other day, and lost all sense of direction." Newton Filinas He took a moment to glance back and forth along the beach before pointing a webbed hand upward, "Er... I b-believe it's th-that way..." He allowed himself to steal a glance at her doeish features, curiously trying to gauge how far along she was without seeming rude. Emerwyn She looked off in the distance, then her face trailed up, looking curiously in the direction of the sun. She could have learned it from Him, as well. What a silly girl! But she gave credit where it was due. "Many thanks to you, noble sir." She looked questioningly now at Newton, seeing something searching in his enormous eyes. Then she smiled. "I know, I must look a wreck, do I not? All I have been doing since last I transformed was running and running... Never stopped to see just how many layers of mud caked themselves in my hair." Newton Filinas "I... I s-suppose th-that's n-natural f-for... er... a d-deer, is it?" He kept feeling like he was caught in the middle of a candid stage play, and cleared his throat nervously, "Ah... I.. I m-mean, if th-that's wh-what you are..." Emerwyn "If I am not, then I have been sorely mistaken for a very long time." Emerwyn idly plucked the sand from between the hoofs with her thumb. Her bit of stage business. She still looked up at Newton, however, who was seated center stage. "It certainly feels natural to run, no question there. What feels natural to you, Newton?" Newton Filinas He glanced to the side with an embarrassed sort of fidget before the familiar croak popped from his throat, "KrrKIT I ah..." He swallowed, and ended with a bit more enthusiasm, "H-hopping I sup-sup-suppose... b-but... b-but I... I d-do like t-tuh-tinkering." Emerwyn Emerwyn laughed softly and appreciatively. "Yes, yes, I do suppose that hopping would suit one of your build the best... Tinkering? Do you mean, tinkering with gadgets, and the like?" she asked curiously. Newton FIlinas "Ah... Er... l-little th-things, yes," He wet his lips with his sticky tongue, shifting to try to straighten up now that the spotlight had swiveled to him. "I... w-with... um... " He pointed his fingers together, trying to illustrate without saying it. "Er... fuh-fuh-ff-ff..." Emerwyn Her head tilted to the side. "I'm sorry? I don't quite understand you... Could you... spell it perhaps?" Emerwyn wasn't sure if Newton was a stutterer, or just a very nervous fellow. She was leaning toward the latter, but all the same... Newton FIlinas "F-find th-things and... " He blurted out, but was interrupted by his throat swelling slightly before releasing, "KrrKIT! Ah... er.... s-seeing if... if I c-can reuse them." Emerwyn "That's fascinating." Emerwyn said honestly. "Do you find many things washed up on the beach?" That part particularly interested Emerwyn. The mere concept of finding things from the outside world would become an all-consuming prospect. Newton FIlinas "N-not... n-not usually, except... b-broken glass and.... c-c-cans from... th-the p-parties and s-suchlike..." When she showed interest, it seemed he managed to at least stay at a level that he could keep some sort of rhythm to the wording. "I've b-been.... s-saving l-little b-bits I've f-found all... p-po-polished up by the r-reefs. Thought I'd m-make a w-wind ch-chime or something if I c-could... d-drill a little hole in them or s-something." Emerwyn Emerwyn became a little crestfallen, but she still listened aptly to Newton. "A wind chime," she mused. "That would be absolutely lovely... It is long since many of us have made any music. The sound will fall blessed onto weary ears." Newton FIlinas He beamed when it seemed like she liked his idea, (or at least he think she did, with her strange way of phrasing things, he wasn't entirely sure if he misunderstood something or not,) throat puffing proudly, "I... I.. I c-could m-m-make you one for your d-duplex if... if you w-wanted one!" Emerwyn Emerwyn positively glowed when Newt said that. "Would you, really? That would mean a great deal to me, Newton. It really would." She smiled. Newton FIlinas "Ah... ah... I'd... I m-mean... I'm s-still working on it... it's d-difficult w-with... with only a f-few t-tools and things... b-but... b-but m-m-muh-maybe D-doctor L-lockheart c-could... ah... s-send me some j-jewler's d-drills and th-the like?" He beamed. His own tool kit was limited and clumsy for more delicate work, but it would keep him busy if he had more little fiddly things to do. A hot glue gun could only go so far. He had been told no moters, but maybe a little hand drill? Something he could crank himself, if it was possible to drill through glass that way... Emerwyn "Oh please, you needn't feel obligued. The gesture alone was enough for me. These things should not be rushed..." Emerwyn wiped her brow subconsciously. It was getting frightfully warm, as the sun just passed its peak, now entering the hottest part of the day. Newton FIlinas "Ah... oh..." He swallowed, shifting in his crouch to glance up and down the leignth of the beach, as though expecting someone to come and interupt them. But they were alone, and he was well on his way to making a new friend. He was rather proud of himself for that much. "Ah... um. W-well... I'll... w-where c-could... wh-when I f-finish it I mean, wh-where d-do you... ah...?" Emerwyn Emerwyn brought her legs in, sitting in a strange looking cross-legged position. "I live in Duplex number Eighteen. I am not there terribly often, but I do stop in several times a week... We should arrange for another meeting, Newton - even before your music is ready." Emerwyn had always somehow managed to be able to speak with even the most disagreeable company. Mostly, this was because even the cruelest of folk did not know quite what to make of her. But she had rarely been able to connect with anyone. Newton was so unassuming. She did not judge him, and in return, he granted her the same favor. He was truly a pure soul, and Emerwyn had taken a very strong liking to him. Newton FIlinas "Ah... y-you're... one of th-the ah... older ones," He smiled weakly, but noted the state of her patchy furr, "Ah.... b-but... y-you aren't f-finished yet?" Emerwyn "Older ones... yes," Emerwyn sighed. "I have been here for well over a year, actually. Though, your observations are correct; I know I have yet one more awaiting me. I do not know quite why... I only just reached the stage I am at now, so I may assume I shall be almost done with my second year by the time I am complete... provided it ever happens." Newton FIlinas "Wuh-well... w-well, I r-remember h-hearing the t-techs t-talking about... m-mm-mo-mo-metabolic r-rates and... and s-serums effecting d-different con-con-constitutions and the like," He murmured in an attempt to be helpful. "I... ah... h-have one m-m-more to go as w-well, I b-buh-believe..." He scratched at his head with his nobbly-webbed fingers, stomach giving a growl. Emerwyn It was true; Emerwyn was never very strong at all. And not only that, she had been severely ill for a very long time. It would probably have been very dangerous to throw her off like that. This relieved Emerwyn some. She wasn't dysfunctional, then. She wasn't... going to die. She nodded. "My thanks to you. That brings peace to me. The islanders seem to be - 'moving along' at a faster rate as of late. Or, perhaps, it is simply my being overwhelmed by just how many people are living here. In the old days, we all knew each other. I hardly see any of them anymore..." She thought of those who she viewed as good friends - Emelyn and Greer had been like sisters to her. Where were they now? Emelyn, she knew, had been hurt, but she had to be better now. But Greer? She did not know. Newton Filinas "Ah... I s-suppose it w-would be s-strange... it's b-become l-like a c-city, almost, hasn't it? D-did you s-see the theater b-being built?" She seemed like the type to take an interest in it. Emerwyn A city. That struck a cord. New York City was the last place she lived in her 'time on Earth.' You rarely saw the same person twice, lest you intended to. "A theatre?" Newton could not be more right about Emerwyn's interest. "I did not... What a glorious idea." A thousand ideas spun around her head. "Who, may I ask, is organizing such a project?" Newton Filinas "Ah... w-well, M-mister G-gaius has b-been d-doing all the b-building. He's the man to ask if y-you w-want to help at all, b-but ah..." He shifted, the nerviousness coming back to him, "M-muh-Mister W-woodrow th-thought it up, I th-think. He's doing th-the ah... auditions." His smile slowly returned as though remembering something funny, "Th-there's a r-rather... ah... m-messy letter about it on the b-buh-bullitan board." Emerwyn "Gaius... Woodrow. I am not familiar with either of those people. Mayhaps you might introduce me to them sometime?" Newton Filinas "G-gaius is r-really nice," Newt brightened up at the talk of his friend, "He's c-come up w-with the whole d-design of the p-place! I h-helped w-with the buh-benches! B-but he's really c-clever." The smile faded at the mention of the other man, though, "I d-don't like M-mr. W-woodrow m-much, though. He m-makes me... ah... uncomfortable." Emerwyn "Wonderful, I look forward to meeting Gaius, then." Woodrow was apparantly another of the more undesirable islanders. Perhaps his hard personality would make him a good director, then? "Why don't you tell me what they look like? That way I may also find them on my own." It was frightfully easy to spot people by simple statement of which animal they are, since the doctors seemed rather keen to avoid duplication, though it seemed to happen sometimes... Newton Filinas "Ah, w-well, G-gaius is v-very t-tall, w-with a... l-large, th-thick n-neck and... w-well, he's... r-rather m-muscled and... er... has th-these l-little p-pointed ears and b-bluh-black curly hair..." Emerwyn If they were different people, in a different place, this would simply sound like the description of a muscular man with oddly pointed ears. But Emerwyn's mind image was a little more exaggerated, as was neccessary here. She nodded. Newton Filinas "Er... and ah... M-mr. W-woodrow is... w-well... v-very sh-short, I sup-suppose... ah... no hair... er... m-more of a... " He gestured at his mouth, "Ah... b-beak and um... l-lots of... w-wriggly t-tentacles. H-he's... q-quite t-terrible to l-look at." Emerwyn Emerwyn frowned. All those tentacles... She certainly knew someone who looked like that, and he certainly was not an agreeable person, even by her standards. "Excuse me, Newton, but would Woodrow happen to be this man's... last name? Only because it would be a great and terrible coincidence for there to be two unfriendly tentacled fellows wandering about." Newton Filinas "Er... w-well, th-there w-was th-that... t-terrible m-man w-with b-black t-tentacles th-that... t-tried to s-scare th-the... the hop out of me too, I d-don't like him m-much either." Emerwyn "Black tentacles? I am afraid that cannot be who I am thinking of, no... The man I know... his are more of a purple, or blueish hue." So there were two cruel tentacled people... or more, if this Woodrow proved to be his own essence. "What is the name of the black tentacled man?" Newton Filinas "Er... I... th-think... th-think it w-was... er... R-richard. Th-the... the other is s-sometimes b-blue, yes! B-but um... s-sometimes he's other c-colors too." Emerwyn She sighed in relief. But, still. This Woodrow had to be Billy. "I believe he can be none other than Billy. As for Richard..." She had met a strange, but nice old man named Richard. He couldn't have possibly been the same one. After all, Emerwyn had no idea how Richard had been progressing, for she had met him fully human. "I do not know him." "Either way," she continued. "I will have to make a point of meeting with Mr. Woodrow all the same. Some things cannot be avoided, and I certainly shall not miss out on such an opportunity for the sake of a nasty and bitter man." Newton Filinas "Well... I suppose he's... g-g-got lots to b-be b-buh-buh-bitter about? I d-don't know," He shifted, floundering. "B-but... if y-you w-want to b-be in the show, you've g-got to talk to him."* Emerwyn Emerwyn nodded. She had certainly learned that, the day that Billy was in odd sorts, and had relayed to her his sad story. It was from that day that she'd harbored a soft spot for Billy, even though he frustrated her so. "You will keep me up to date on its progress, won't you? It has been far too long since I have had something to look forward to." Emerwyn wiped her brow again. It would soon be time to go. Newton Filinas He fidgeted, feeling salty and dry himself, and in need of a good dip in the river on his way back. "Er.. f-feel... f-free to come v-visit sometime... if you w-wanted." Emerwyn "And where is your duplex, Newton?" Emerwyn asked, wiping sand off of herself. Newton Filinas "Er... f-f-fuh... F-fifty two. Th-the... er... upstairs one. It's a l-little m-m-muddy though, I warn you." Emerwyn "In my condition, I am certain it will not be a problem. If anything, I should add to the mess." She laughed lightly. "Newton, I am pleased that we were able to reaquaint ourselves." She leaned over on an impulse, and gave him a small kiss on his froggy cheek. Then she rose. Newton Filinas He flinched at the gesture, a sharp "KrrKIT!" escaping his throat, "I... ah... y-yes... m-mm-muh-me too." Emerwyn "Fare thee well, Newton!" she said, coming up to full height. "Until we should meet again." With a final wave, she turned, heading in the direction of the village, shaking her hair out, quite ready for a shower.

Newton Filinas made for Emerwyn Newt had been working all night after his meeting with Emerwyn the doe-lady, intent on finishing his gift for his new friend. With the small tools the labs had granted him and the disgarded shoe-laces from shoes that could no longer fit on digigrade feet, (He had formed a rather nice collection at this point) strapped around drift wood and wound through the little holes he had managed to drill into the surviving pieces of sea-glass. Judging by the trace amounts of blood along the glass, a lot of effort had been put into the sharp pieces to get them to hang properly. As promised, he hopped to her duplex early one morning befor he hoped she was awake (if home at all) and tied the contraption up to hang from just outside her window, tinkling and glittering in the breaze. He left no note, figuring it was fairly self explanitory and fled immediatly befor he was caught.
