Rolling for T’tain of Brown Thespeth

A dragon (your dragon maybe?) becomes a floating platform. He or she takes you (and his or her rider if it's not yours) a little bit further from shore. They mus have been lucky because you wind up catching quite a haul! Some yellowgills, redfins, and a rare green shellback are all brought in to be salted, boiled, smoked, and dried. Tasty! +10 points

Total Points: +10

T'tain stood on Thespeth's back as he traveled out to sea a little. There they fished and fished until they had quite a bit of fish acquired. T'tain was quite proud of the lot he had gotten and began to sing as Thespeth brought him and the fish back into the shore.

R'bin and Huarangith
Quote:
61-70: You're fishing with a pole today, standing on the small floating dock. You see the bobber go under, and pull up hard. Sure enough, there's a whopper at the end of the line. It's a fight, and you can tell you've snagged the largest packtail you've ever seen. Unfortunately you yank too hard and the line snaps. Not only is your pole now useless, but the big one gets away.
Worse, your fishing luck the rest of the sevenday seems to follow suit... You wind up with a whole lot of nothin'. -10 points

R'bin didn't know a whole lot about fishing, it was true, but it seemed to him that there couldn't be too much that was difficult about baiting a line, tossing it into the water, and waiting for a fish to get hungry.

Are you sure you don't want me to swim out with you on my back, so you can fish farther from the others? Huarangith offered.

R'bin glanced at Eri, who had wandered out to join him since it was lunchtime in the creche. The boy had recently celebrated his nameday and had been much easier to deal with, for some reason. Right now, he was baiting hooks for R'bin and giggling as he lost fish after fish.

Not right now, R'bin answered.

"Those fish must be smarter than they look," Eri observed. "But - oh! - look at that packtail! He's almost as big as I am!"

That wasn't quite true, but it was an impressively large fish. R'bin cast again and shocked everyone by bouncing the bait off the packtail's nose. It snagged it and the fight began, with Eri and Huarangith both shouting encouragement as R'bin did his best to bring the fish in. He had just about gotten it to the dock when the line broke with an audible snap and he stumbled backward, just about tripping over his nephew.

"He got away!" Eri howled. It wasn't the tantrum howl he used to use, just the howl of a child who was too excited to moderate his volume.

"And the line's snapped," R'bin noted. "It looks like we'll have to call it a day. Besides, aren't you supposed to be in the creche?"

Eri admitted that he was and the pair set off in that direction.

Taibbi and Neuwith
Quote:
41-50: As you begin to reel in the net or line, you are overpowered by a strong wave, and your catch is set free. Shardit! That had been a good haul, too! Nonriders or riders without XP points, take -5 points. If you are a rider, your dragon is able to support you, and you manage to bring in a full net of packtails. Riders with XP points add 5 points to their total.

Are you sure you don't want me to help? Neuwith offered. Like Taibbi, she was standing in the water a few yards out from the shore. Unlike Taibbi, the water barely reached her elbows. For her human, the water was up to her thighs.

I've got it, Taibbi assured the green. And that was basically true. She had thick, strong arms and was accustomed to using them for heavy work. It was true she'd slimmed down a little bit in her turns at the Weyr, but she was still a solid young woman and she could certainly haul a net without help.

Of course, there was that old saying about pride and falls, and before Taibbi quite knew what had happened, she was being dragged across the sandy bottom of the water, her bare arms and shins abraded by the rough granules and her nose filled with snot and saltwater.

It only lasted for a moment or two - Neuwith was quick to recover her rider, but the damage was done: the net was lost and most of Taibbi's exposed skin was scraped bloody.

"What...happened?" she gasped around the burning in the back of her throat.

You got knocked over by a wave, and dragged a bit, from the look of things. I'm sorry I didn't catch you sooner. Neuwith sounded genuinely contrite, and Taibbi was quick to reassure her, but she did so while leaving the surf. All that salt water against raw flesh was shockingly painful.

Infirmary? Neuwith asked.

Probably had better, Taibbi agreed, unaware that they'd just send her to take a bath and remind her to use a lot of soap until her skin healed up.

I'll try to get the net back, the young green volunteered, eager to be helpful now that she was sure her rider wasn't going to drown.

Thanks.

Csinda and Tijuth
Quote:

Are you sure we ought to go out this deep? Tijuth fussed. Anything we catch out here, we'll have to bring back, and it'll probably weigh as much as I do.

It would have been difficult for Csinda to hear her dragon had they not been able to communicate telepathically, given the rain and the wind, even though they were flying low. She did hear, though, and she assured her dragon that the hauling would almost certainly be left to the brown and blue in their group.

It had better be, Tijuth grumbled. Can you imagine if I drowned? Has a dragon ever drowned before? It would be so embarrassing.

Can't you go between from underwater? Csinda asked.

I've never tried. I don't think I want to, either. So I hope whatever we catch is large enough to make the trip worth while, but small enough no one will drown before we get it home.

Csinda grinned against the wind and then saw her mate waving frantically toward the water. A deepfish had risen toward the surface. Maybe the rain had brought it up?

Let's catch it! she urged Tijuth.

I'm pretty sure it's bigger than I am, Tijuth demurred. Let's not.

But if we don't, they'll say we didn't help at all, Csinda pointed out. It worked. In a moment, the green was diving into the water, wings folded very tightly and forelimbs extended.

It turned out the deepfish wasn't as big as Tijuth, but it was big enough that holding it at the top of the water long enough for the other dragons to lend a claw was a struggle that involved so much thrashing Csinda was thrown into the water and had to swim a bit away and tread water until the deepfish had been defeated. Then Tijuth came to collect her and the trio of dragons hauled their catch back to the Weyr.

Chilled to the bone, Csinda warmed herself with a hidden flask of spirits she'd tucked into the interior pocket of her flight jacket. It made things feel significantly more festive upon their return, and the stories she told about the battle with the deepfish were much better than her companions' versions.

Z'men and Brilath
Quote:
51-60: As you're preparing to run your net, you discover that the beach is swarming with spiderclaws. You decide the fish can wait, and instead, start gathering the shelled creatures. That's good eatin'! You are successful and able to bring back quite the haul! +15 points

Z'men, do we have to specifically bring back fish? Brilath asked as the pair flew over the beaches on their way to drop some nets.

The bearded bluerider reviewed what he'd been told at the wing meeting, but he hadn't really been attending and he couldn't recall whether they'd been directed to only bring back fish, or whether any sort of edible sea life would suffice.

Why do you ask? he answered.

Spiderclaws. Lots of them. All over the beach. I bet we could catch a lot of those and bring them back and it wouldn't take nearly as long.

Z'men considered for a moment before agreeing and asking Brilath to land a little bit away from the crustaceans (to avoid scaring them into hiding). As they landed, he realized that it would really be him doing all the catching, since Brilath just wasn't built for pursuing and picking up creatures as relatively tiny as spiderclaws, but that was all right. He could take his time about it and stay dry, and there was next to no chance he'd end up losing a finger or an eyeball, as he'd heard folks in other wings griping about.

It turned out if he layered the nets, the holes became too small for spiderclaws to squirm through, and after several hours Z'men had a respectable haul. Possibly not as much meat as if he'd filled those same nets with fish, but food was food, and this would make for nice variety. He and Brilath returned to the Weyr congratulating themselves.

It might not have been the biggest haul, but the bucketful of shimmering yellowfun and fingertails was at least food that would be on the tables of Western. Being tired of fish certainly beat not eating at all in Niviora's eyes. Sauzath gave a pleased hum, peering at the last few wriggles of the fish before they started to bring their haul in.

You fish with a net, and while there were a few tangles early on, you find your stride. Within your haul you find a rare but very meaty and very pregnant flatfish. This thing is ugly but its meat is known to be smoked--and its eggs are a true treat even Lord Holders pay a pretty penny for. Casgar and the kitchenfolk will be more than pleased! +15 points

Whatever minor pang that Nonami felt for dredging up the pregnant flatfish is easily washed away by the sheer delight of the food that it would bring into the kitchen. All that nice meat, and caviar to boot? Oh, the sore muscles would be worth it to have some good variety for a meal.

Hauling in the net full of silverfish was a struggle, with them wriggling and fighting against the net. First thing in the morning, as daybreak had loomed ever closer, Cortun hadn't expected to come across such a find. Though he'd been determined to get some good early morning fishing in, the discovery of so many spiderclaws skittering across the beach couldn't just not be ignored. He spent a good chunk of the morning, bucket in hand, chasing after the crustaceans while Menyherth used careful claws to dig them back out of the sand, and herd them closer to his rider.

The smorgasbord on the beach couldn't be ignored, so bundled up tight to fight against the chill and the rain, Dystzha hummed as she made her way down the beach. So much seaweed that could be dried, or even wrapped around fish. Perhaps the kitchen would be able to do anything of what she collected.

Character: Astriana and Blue Moratath

Astriana got herself a pole to do some fishing and got situated on the floating dock. Moratath was nearby, keeping an eye out for any fish that he could snag for the Weyr. The blonde kept her eyes also open, when she noticed the bobber dip down and then get pulled up. Well, seems there must be something there, as she pulled as best as she could on the pole. Yep, this one had a lot of heft to it, she could imagine what a big help this could be to their Weyr. She put everything she could into it and then heard a very loud snap.

"Shardit, I broke my pole and that fish got away!"she growled under her breath.

Hopefully that is no indication for the rest of the sevenday or we are going to be no help. Who would have known a fish would have been stronger than you, Mine,Moratath quipped, earning him a dirty look from his rider. However, she knew underneath his words was nothing but love, knowing she had done her best.
