But Anakumath, bless her, sent them coordinates from Martirae, and they seized them and jumped. And a few breaths later, they were back in open air.

Her hearts were breaking and there was nothing she could do soothe them. Lireloth, Nioweth, Rixth, Nanuth, Silmarath... How many more would fall? How many more would they need to catch? How many more of her darlings would she lose? Isharath and Alquemieth had already devastated her; and what of Takarath? It was hard for the queen not to feel the loss of her kin, her friends, her loves, her hatchlings during such danger.
If she could, she would have gathered them all up beneath her wings to shield them from the devastation. And what of Mictecath? Anakumath? What of her wingmates who were being scored and injured... or suffering the knowledge knowing they had to continue fighting even while their brethren fell?
The only comfort twilight gave her was the knowledge that her ashen and grey hide was hidden. But those who knew her hearts would know she carried a heave burden indeed.
They will be well... They must be well. Olliah tried to comfort Hers, tried to tuck away her own fears. They had to focus on their duty. Any worries would distract them... And they could not, would not, let those above them down. There would be time enough to comfort, time enough to support, as soon as Fall was over. And quite frankly, there was still a long way left to go.

Quiet gripped them again, and Olliah felt her thoughts stray. She never regretted Impressing a queen, but sometimes, it almost felt ... too easy. For as much rank as they were given, for as much respect, and awe--and for what? They rarely were the ones to fall in battle, and yet... they were lauded and praised.
The real heroes of Pern were sacrificing everything above them.

But fate had a funny way of working--for no sooner as Olliah's thoughts begun to stray, but Thread fell well into their airspace. For all Fianth was not a large queen, she was trim and slim enough to be far more agile than her dam. With almost as much ease as her smallest, green daughters, the dragon positioned Olliah with ease to char the menace.
She sent Hers love... and quietly reminded her that they still did good. And they would do more, as soon as they were allowed back into the Bowl.

There was still some elegance in them, dirty and scored as they were. She was quite satisfied with her tight little turn, and even more so when the Thread they'd targeted blew away on the wind.

Niobet took a moment to close her eyes, to tilt her head from side to side until her neck cracked. It was the wrong moment. Neither she nor Aedeth saw the clump of Thread that draped itself across Aedeth's back just behind Niobet's seat, but they both felt it. With a shriek, Aedeth jumped Between to freeze the nasty stuff off.
