gaia_crown Koichi Mori, the Prince of Ruin gaia_crown
"With my feet planted firmly upon the lands of those who came before, I seek to create a better tomorrow for those who are yet to come..."

Sera was right in that they were fortunate to have found this place, but what was a real mystery was why so few people outside of the two of them had shared the same thought. The Imperial Palace was, with perhaps the exception of the Diet, the most guarded and heavily fortified location in the entire country. Shouldn't this have been one of the first places that people went in order to seek sanctuary against the devils and the Apocalypse which gathered beyond its walls? There were hundreds of possibilities that he had already thought about; maybe there were people and demons were inside the palace, having cut them down already and devoured them, or perhaps the people who were inside had gone underground and were in hiding, or perhaps the people who had tried to get inside were delayed and killed/devoured by demons, or perhaps the people who had been inside of the Estate had decided to take refuge elsewhere, a secret location somewhere else, and had sent out a message which warned people away from the Estate out of fear or duty to the crown? The latter, however, seemed unlikely; from what he had gathered, the Conception had struck almost all at once. Most people hadn't had time to flee, and those who had probably didn't make it far. It was still a bit strange to be here, though...to see it so empty. It was best if they were safe moving forward, and didn't take anything for granted.

Even one very powerful demon could have cleared out the estate (which was, admittedly, in a little bit of a state of disrepair when they had arrived...as though there had been rushing, panic, but with little signs of combat or struggle at all) and be waiting in a hidden door or something to catch them when they had their guards down. Speaking of, as Sera suggested what they might do during the day, he smiled faintly for a moment and slid out of bed beside her, letting his cat linger in the bed a little longer, being lazy and not quite ready to join them facing the day.

"It was nothing," he kissed her quickly but didn't quite buy into the idea that he had done anything special just yet, "I've had my Lilim searching the estate for enemies or refugees, and my Preta patching holes in the wall and the gate outside all night. So the two of us should spend the morning shuddering the windows, to finish fortifying the Estate."

He let his expression fall serious again as he glanced out at the hallway beyond the door. They had a plan for the morning, but she was right...there had been so much death already, and if he wanted to do as his father would have done to preserve the people of this country that they loved to some measure, they needed to get out and start rescuing some of the survivors.

"Afterwards...we need a plan," he spoke quietly, mind working a thousand miles a minute as he considered the safest way to do so, "My father...would have wanted to preserve not just the country, but her people as well. I can do no less if I want to honor him..."

It was swift work helping to patch up the rest of the Estate so far, and scouring it for any other signs of life had turned up nothing. The next step of securing their place in this Estate had been pulling down the shudders and locking them over the windows, making any sort of entrance to the building other than the front door and the keys (or a full-force explosion or attack to the walls, but then, there were some demons that any barrier probably wouldn't be able to keep out if they were inclined to come here) unlikely to be breached by the lesser of the threats to their lives out there. They could have taken a breath, but Koichi was already out into the lobby stretching out as his devils returned to him, ready for action once more. He nodded at each of them as he prepared to head out to the yard and get a ground-level view of the area around them. This would be the best way to understand the types of threats that could assail them and their options for repelling them should the worst come to pass. Getting onto the roof and making a similar plan later would only confirm that, but one step at a time.

With their base secure from the inside, it was time to start putting together the outer defenses. If they were going to bring people into this place, not all of them were going to be able to live inside the estate if they had any success at this whatsoever. As he considered his options for alternative housing, Ser Pounce lazily bounded up onto his shoulder and settled there, bringing a small smile to his face.

"Come on, then. We have work to do."

"So I heard that you all were looking for a good story to act out. Well I happen to know a fantastic storywriter..."

Having successfully cleared another mission sent, as well as gaining another demon, he was on the fast track to power. A track that he highly did not wish to be on. But, as he had turned a corner, he noticed that he was surrounded by demons on all angles. "Wonderful... absolutely wonderful..." Those were the only words he spoke as he summoned his new demon and dived in, sadly getting into the groove that he was thrusted into. Hopefully, at some point, he would be able to get back into his own wavelength, but for now it would be best to ride it as far as he could.

"What do you mean you don't see them? The storywriter is right in front of your eyes!"

With the horde dealt with, all the nervous tension seemed to melt straight out of his body. having a moment to himself seemed to be sparse during this time of chaos, but each moment that he could get, he took happily, cause each moment of down time was another moment savored for planning.

They worked all morning making sure the place was safe and secure enough. The girl brushed the sweat away from her forehead and tied up her hair in a tiny ponytail, a sigh escaping her. It didn't compare to fighting demons and risking your life, it was true, but it was still a lot of work, and darn was it exhausting. Her back hurt, her hands were full of little scratches and her demons wouldn't shut up.

The place was huge, and it hadn't been in the best conditions when they had gotten there. Not as bad as some of the buildings they had seen on their way there, but it had definitely seen some kind of confrontation. No sign of people though. She didn't know what Motonari Mori would have thought in this kind of situation...but she was sure he probably had some kind of contingency plan for the End of the World. Back in the Bad Future, he had practically constructed an underground city to keep as many people safe as possible. It had been a remarkable feat, really.

In this world...it was up to them to do it.

Her hands rested on her hips, the pinkette turning to look at her boyfriend with an amused expression. "So...we go out for a little fresh air? Not that we are getting anything fresh out there, but... you understand. See if we find some survivors out there..."

"With my feet planted firmly upon the lands of those who came before, I seek to create a better tomorrow for those who are yet to come..."

Their luck was holding. Koichi couldn't help but let out a small sigh of relief as they stepped out of the large, reinforced doors of the Imperial Estate onto the lawn and weren't attacked immediately by some rogue demon looking for a bite of fresh human to devour. And as he looked out across the ruined grass of what had once been the most immaculate yard in the country, he could only see an occasional straggling demon either rushing this way or that, or lazing about, easy pickings for the two of them to clear out before they moved out to the gate at the edge of the grounds and started back into the city to look for survivors. Far in the distance, the sounds of continuing battle could be heard, and occasionally the beating of wings...angelic, demonic, it was hard to tell...could be seen far off in the skyline as they passed between buildings, hunting down the various prey that they were after. But whenever they had come here before, they had migrated away from this spot for the time being. If they were lucky, it was going to stay that way for a while longer. If they were lucky. But a Mori didn't rely on luck, and he had already begun to think about what sorts of defenses they could mount at the estate and possibly even an alert system to allow them to know when a stronger devil was heading their way.

A relay beacon system was always useful; mounting multiple demons on rooftops in any direction from the estate with flammable materials and a standing order that should they see one of the Fiends that were utterly decimating the city heading in their direction, they would light the beacon and then pass the fire along, beacon-by-beacon, until the Estate had received their warning long before the threat reached their doors. To do that, he would need more devils, however. And he needed to get out and fight and gather Macca to do that. ...And that was just one of his plans.

"We should clear the lawn of demons first; our secondary objective is to head in directions where the fighting is less severe and find any people still hiding out, avoiding the worst of it," the young would-be Shogun spoke with his serious expression returning as they stepped down into the lawn and began to summon their demons to their side...but as his feet pressed gently into the grass he looked at Sera with an apologetic smile, "I know that heading away from the combat might be to abandon those who are caught in the war zone right now, but the truth is, we are not yet strong enough to survive there, ourselves. We need to build up strength, and staying away from the epicenter of this war for as long as we can to prepare is our safest option."

It was one of the tough choices his father made every day. To press into overwhelming odds for the fool's hope of saving everyone, or to strike where they could do so with certainty to ensure that they saved as many people as was reasonably possible without failure. And after thinking on it overnight, Koichi had found his answer. For now.

Behind another corner, he turned, planning every action that was to happen, and what he faced when he noticed was something similar to all the others that happened before when he heard chittering nearby: A horde of demons ready to maul. With a sigh and summoning his aquans, he readied for another slaughter.

"What do you mean you don't see them? The storywriter is right in front of your eyes!"

"On it!" the girl chirped, her gaze having been locked on a group of funny looking Nozuchis trying to settle in the yard. Unfortunately for them, Koichi and her had arrived there first, and had called dibs. This was their Palace...and no Nozuchi or any other demon would take it from them. And unlucky for them...Sera wasn't really all that gentle. She punted one of those furry balls, and the others scattered away without resistance.

"Sorry, you were saying?" Sera listened to Koichi's plan, and her gaze followed his as he turned to look at the fighting in the distance. It seemed the fighting was concentrated in the center of Tokyo...and it probably was were more people were gathered. Still... he did have a point. It rubbed her the wrong way though...knowing she wasn't strong enough just yet...and that she could risk his life and the lives of the people she was trying to save. "But...the people fighting are the ones in more danger. And if we get their help...our own strength will grow." No, he was right. As much as she hated to admit it. Not that it was any news...Koichi was always right. They would take too many risks...

"With my feet planted firmly upon the lands of those who came before, I seek to create a better tomorrow for those who are yet to come..."

It bothered him more than he could let on to hear Sera's disappointed response to his plan, but what bothered him more, what he couldn't allow her to see even if she knew that he was feeling it deep inside of his heart, was that he wanted to agree with her with every fiber of himself. His father had prided himself on preserving the people of this country, so long as they were willing to serve it, and no person was too small, too insignificant, to be worthy of his protection when their need was the greatest. But then, he had the benefit of his own plans which allowed him the foresight to plan for such things, to take in the maximum number of refugees, to protect the maximum area to house and defend, and even he, when the times were the toughest and sacrifices had to be made, knew where and when to draw the line for the best possible outcome for the country. Contrary to his cold-blooded reputation, it was an undeniable fact that Motonari Mori loved Japan. And he loved her people. But he came from an age where every warlord with an army had a different vision of what that 'Japan' should be, and many of them would have dismantled her from the foundation and rebuilt her in some new image, apart from the traditions and beautiful culture that had made her the unique gem of the Pacific that she truly was. To his father, those people were not Japanese...they were not worthy of his protection...and there were still those today who elicited those feelings inside of his heart, particularly within the government which had changed their culture and outlawed so much of the world he had known and protected in those days long ago. And those who could not understand that, who could not understand the decisive, painful measures he wished to take to restore their land to its rightful glory and traditions...he simply had no time, nor sympathy, for any of them.

Drastic action was needed. And he had taken that when he rose to the office of the Shogun. He knew that not everything that his father had done was...right. And much of it was cruel. But in the end...the father that he had known, the world that he had grown up in, seeing the truth of his father's devotion and love firsthand taken to the very extreme...it had never been found wanting. And he would admire that forever.

But he wasn't his father, and the whole situation had him working backwards, retracing his footsteps in the worst possible way. He had no land to protect, no people, and barely any power to do so. His plan had to be formed on the fly, after the world had fallen and before they had the resources to carry it out, but he was doing the best that he could without taking the unnecessary risks that would crush their ambitions before they began. Still...like his father, he loved this country and her people. And unlike him, his heart was more open, bigger, more willing to accept those who could not adhere to the strict traditions which his father had held so closely to his heart. He respected them, and believed in them to his own degree, of course. But Koichi Mori was his own man, too. That was why this hurt so, so bad. Bad enough that when he came across one of the devils on the Red Viper's list waiting just beyond the gate of the Estate Grounds, he opened it and swiftly took it down, only registering in the back of his mind (because little could slip past even a distracted Mori) that he had been rewarded with the Macca for the bounty.

...He wanted to respond to Sera's humanity. He wanted to embrace his own. But in this cruel world, with so little to support them right now, diving head-first into the worst of this conflict was suicide. And he couldn't condone that. No matter how much it hurt.

"I think I heard a voice in the alley two blocks down," he nodded towards something clanging a little to the right, away from the worst of the noises from the heart of the city...not entirely on purpose, because there was something to investigate, but not entirely by coincidence, either, "We cannot save everyone, Sera...I'm sorry." He told her that with a sheepish, sad look that broke through his stoic Mori mask in spite of itself...but there was certainty and finality in his words that did not betray any hesitation to follow or believe them. In spite of his sentimentality, he knew when he was making the right decision.

"But together, we'll save every last person that we can."

Sera knew he didn't like it... and she knew this was a difficult decision for him. Koichi always looked for the greater good...for the option that would benefit the most people. He took risks, but in the end, he knew which ones would actually do any good for his and his people's goals. Sera was a little less calculative in that sense...she based many decisions in hunches, in what she believed was right. She was brash at times, and took risks that would put endanger her life if it meant saving the people she cared about. Her father had been headstrong...her mother had been just as stubborn. No wonder she was what she was.

She knew this was difficult for him and decisions weighted down on him, even if he didn't show it. So when he looked at her apologetically, the pinkette just smiled faintly in return, letting him know that she was behind him in his decision. She walked up to him and brushed her hand against his for just a second in passing, turning her attention to the way where the noises were being heard. "Let's hurry then... the quicker we do this...the more people we save."

Having finished off the horde of demons, the blood squelched underneath his feet. being completely drenched in blood was not one's way of fun, or atleast not his, and after taking off some of his outer layers, he began washing them with aquans' water. However, once he was down to only his mask, he had noticed that there was a demon from Lucifer's camp staring at him from afar. Wanting to take no chances, he let his demon loose on the army member, watching as they died.

With the one soldier dead underneath his feet, he went back to washing his clothes of the blood on them, as well as the new blood that was accumulated from the new meat. It was very tiresome, having to deal with this, but with blood comes smell, and that normally attracts others, and the less hordes he encountered, the better.

With the time allowed for him to take a break, he sat down, looking at his summoning application. Over the years, summoning had become easier and easier, but with summoning like this, it became more mind numbing to it. What snapped him back to reality was the attack that launched nearby his head, the source being another soldier from Lucifer's army. Summoning the demon beside him, he sighed deeply as he looked at the demon. "Sorry, nothing personal."

With the blood back on his mask from the killed demon, he sighed as he retrieved his demon back. Once he turned around, however, he noticed that he was face to face with one of the few people he was not suspecting. "Why hello there, little one. I love the play that you preformed for me. Was it your try at courtship?" The woman spoke, having great pride in herself. "If so, I think you should try better next time." With that, she rid herself of his presence and, by using a technology he was not knowing of, disappeared. "Well that went smoother than expected..."

gaia_crown Koichi Mori, the Prince of Ruin gaia_crown
"With my feet planted firmly upon the lands of those who came before, I seek to create a better tomorrow for those who are yet to come..."

His lips curled faintly in a small measure of relief when Sera brushed her hand over his, reminding him that whatever choice he made, wherever he would lead, the two of them would be moving forward together regardless. Even if her instincts told her to do one thing, she would trust him when he really put his mind to it, and that was a comfort that he needed sometimes. His mother had been the compassionate one in his family, always looking out for others, a gentle hand and a soothing voice...her beautiful green eyes and serene smile were some of the only memories he had of her. She had been the one who gave him such a deep conviction to always look for the way to help as many people as he could, to consider taking risks sometimes instead of always choosing the path that had the highest probability of success if it meant he could help others, and it had been her who prompted him to leave his base back in the Corrupted Future which lead to him finding Sera and her companions, eschewing the dangers of potential Corruption to bring them with him back to their home beneath the ground. It had been because of his mother's influence that Sera was with him now...and he would never forget that. Could never forget that. He just wished that he could introduce her to the result of what she had given him in his youthful days...this happiness, this person...but that was a thought for another time.

On the other side was his father, whose cold rationality made it hard to consider empathy in lieu of success. It wasn't that his father didn't care, simply that he could see the forest for the trees and know that sometimes the route of the savior and the compassionate man could also be the route to the destruction and the loss of everything that one valued. You had to make the hard choices. You had to preserve the greater good if you wanted your way of life, your country, your dreams to endure. And when you made enough of those hard choices, it could condition you to a lack of empathy...make you see the world in percentages instead of seeing the people within. He never wanted to be that detached, and somewhere in his heart, he felt that his father probably didn't, either. It was simply a result of the turbulent times that had borne him. And the Mori Clan endured because of him. Even so, his father had shown in the Bad Future that he wasn't emotionless, and he was not entirely without empathy yet. He loved Koichi's mother...he loved his children...and he loved them enough to let two of them walk away when they couldn't turn a blind eye to the state of the world as it was. Koichi had stayed behind because his father could not let go of that rational mind, that fuel which drove him to do the thing that would allow their people to survive more certainly, but he knew...that the decision would pain him forever.

And those who sides of his upbringing were always at war inside of their elder son, the Prince of Ruin and the heir to the title of Shogun in these lands. He, too, had a duty to preserve this country...to protect her people...and to make both the proper choice and the empathetic one, whenever he could. With that firmly in mind, the young man rounded a corner with his two allies on his shoulder and at his side, spying a man rushing towards them with a pair of devils closing in fast!

"Preta, Lilim!" he called them out so that they landed behind the fleeing citizens, too panicked to look behind them and see that they were using devils to fight these devils...only to see the two teens as their salvation before them, "Flee to the Imperial Estate! You will find sanctuary there." He told the refugees as they nodded and dashed past him, before staring down the devils coming closer to the two of them.

As his mother would have wanted...it was time to fight.
