Chel found herself turning her head to kiss her way up his neck; not in an inviting way, but as yet another idle motion, something as comfortably familiar as breathing.

"Prequels?," she said, intrigued by the notion. A storybook reopened. Then again, if it was a story about Smeagol or some s**t she wasn't sure she could sit through three hours of it. "We'll find out I guess."

Though she didn't move to get up, she did at least say, "Alright husband, what next?"

"Hmm..."

He glanced at their cans of beer, the freezer that still housed the ice cream he had completely forgotten about, then out to the open space where the wall had collapsed. There was a chill layered over his exposed face, but the moonlight looked inviting at the same time.

"We could do the graveyard tomorrow morning," Jack suggested as he turned to face her, hands sliding up her thighs in idle motions of his own. "We've gotten too cozy to ruin it." That, and Chel was at least a little toasty after those drinks. "Got a runic dagger or something to set up a defense around here?"

Not even a honeymoon could completely wash out the instinct.

"No," she admitted like a student who hadn't done the homework and was now asked to turn it in (a situation that wasn't entirely foreign). "Sorry." That addition, at least, was different.

"S'okay." He leaned in and gave Chel a short kiss, adding, "I'm being paranoid."

< If something did take notice of you, they have had plenty of opportunities to strike. Be at peace for a night, dear one. >

"Probably would alert something if we activated more runics here anyway." Jack yawned. "Think we could move the nest to one of the walls? Just to have our backs against something solid."

"But-" that's more work she almost whined before recognizing what Jack was really asking.

She still gave a dramatic groan as she pushed herself off of him, if only because it was funny. She still didn't stand up, but at least leaned forward far enough to turn the runic generator off, which in turn switched the TV off.

What followed was an eerie kind of silence and an awkward stare from her to him before opening her mouth again. "Which wall?"

He was already moving by the time she asked, scooting them to one of the niches formed between an intact wall and the V-shaped, broken one. Jack partitioned some of the blankets to act as a buffer between his back and the cold stone and laid against it with another yawn.

"This'll work," he whispered, gesturing Chel to come over. She'd get the privilege of staying between a warm body and a blanket, which she deserved for putting all of this together.

"You sleepy already?" she asked him, following close behind and helping him arrange the blankets. She didn't like it when others did work for her. Too nice.

"Cozy," he corrected her, and then he grinned. "I'm not opposed to other ways of keeping warm if you're not sleepy."

"Perv," she said with a grin of her own, choosing to lie down on the pile next to him rather than on him (all with due time).

Rather than express her usual behavior, she instead curled against him and merely waited. For what, she wasn't sure.

Behind her a light rain picked up and created a delicate, pretty sound against the Castle's moat. From that a chorus of frogs began to croak, filling the hazy air with some kind of serenity.

From the natural quiet she said, "You ever hear what the Greeks said 'bout soulmates?"

"Husband," he corrected with a cheeky look.

But as they settled in and the drizzle began, Jack let himself sink into the blankets and dropped the grin. It was that twilight state of not wanting to go to sleep but not needing to keep his eyes open either. It didn't help that the soft noises, though soothing, couldn't help but trigger a what if we don't hear something coming? thought.

< I can listen and watch for you, dear one. Do not fear. >

"I haven't, no." He curled an arm around her and remembered a different time when it had been about genius. "What'd they say?"

"a*****e," she countered.

Chel liked the quiet of the rain. It reminded her of nights she would spend with Chris under blankets with a flashlight as he read books to her or they played pokemon on a shared gameboy. Even now she was delighted to think how fortunate it was that she was curled up with her husband in a warm place rather than outside, drenched, performing some horrible mission or another.

"Don't they teach you nothin' in those mad science labs?" she began with a tone of feigned exasperation. She settled into his arms and began tracing a thumb on his cheek lovingly. "Back when humans was first made s'said they got double of everything, right? Like everyone's got four arms an' legs, two noses an' all that. So we were dudes and chicks and we got the strengths of both y'know?" Now she too was remembering the story about Genius. Didn't he ever get tired of this?

"Anyways, Zeus an' the other gods got all sorts of pissed 'cause they were worried we was gonna ******** 'em up. So Zeus bein' the smartest sent some lightnin' bolts and split us all in half." She took a pause for dramatic effect. "Apollo feels bad for us 'cause we're dyin' and s**t, so he uses ... ******** I dunno, some gay a** thread or somethin' and sews us back up. Zeus is happy 'cause now he got twice the number of worshippers, but we're left feelin' empty."

Chel wasn't a bad storyteller by any means, but she did have a way of getting distracted. "So now we're doomed t'search for our other half. S'cool 'cause they never said it had t'be like married love neither. Just love."
PostPosted: Sat Jan 30, 2016 12:03 am

He let the strokes continue before trying to capture her fingers in his teeth for the hell of it. "Zeus is such a ******** meddler," Jack complained jokingly. "Granted, sounds like we were bizarre looking ******** back in the day."

Unsurprisingly, however, he had his reservations about the idea.

"So Greeks think we're not whole? I'm not a fan." It implied the most important purpose was finding someone to fill the void, and while he was more than happy with this marriage, it'd be a lie to say love had always been in Jack's mind. "You know me. We're already our own gods."

Chel had mixed reactions to his response. The first was mild disappointment (of course he found loopholes and disagreement, of <********> course-) and the second was familiar acceptance. She loved this fighter.

"Yeah I know you. Can't take a good story for s**t," she murmured, crossing the short distance between their noses to give him a kiss. One that might have accidentally leaked her annoyance, her affection.

Her eyes cast down for a moment, unworthy to look upon his oh so godly visage. "I don't think I'm cut fer godliness anyways."

And it was something hard to explain; being so insecure that while he viewed himself through the lens of a god (as he should, because he is and he is-) she didn't see the same. That she really did feel her existance, at some level, was made only to compliment his. It was just who she was and how she was made.

She was doing it again: deflecting, deferring. And it'd be a lie to say in some part that he didn't like being held up like that, just one more bad habit he couldn't be rid of. But as Owain pointed out with his own third party opinion on the matter: was it better to be worshipped, to be feared, or to be loved?

"Hey." His hand, entangled in her hair as they had kissed, gave a small judge. "Look at me." Like in her bedroom so long ago, less morose and far more warm. Only when Chel complied did he continue.

"You're a Hawthorn now." That divide between names had been so important to her, maybe a reminder would help. "Means you're Important People."

"I know," she said softly, but they both knew that knowing wasn't the same as believing. With soft, doughy eyes she admitted, "Just a hard name t'live up to." Like an ivory idol, I adore you.

The rain swaddled her confession, made it holy. Another shortly followed. "Do you ever think about runnin'?"
