 The afternoon glow of the sun tinted the ocean with a slight shimmer like liquid gold. The ship reached the port, the troops heading for their quarters. Those from the island returned to their families and their farms. Music poured from every building in celebration, the streets deserted; Johns' boots tapped on the flagstone streets, the echoing making a lonely sound. The sun hung high overhead, but it brought no warmth. All the while, he thought of the ring in his pocket. It felt heavy. He took a deep breath as he approached the estate, cursing the colonel for giving her his journal. *Click the link on the word "ring" to view the image*

 Keira woke up with a start as happy maids rushed in with excitement. "Excuse me but what is the meaning of this? its too early in the morning." Keira wanted to go back to sleep but instead of that, one of the maids got hervup while the other drew the bath water. Everything was happening too fast as they scrubbed her every inch as she now smelt like lavender and roses. They clothed her in an red elegant dress with golden lace that complimented her golden honey eyes. Once they clothed her they started with her hair. "Dad!" Keira paused as she realized she called the Colonel father and she blushed. She hope he didn't hear her even though she shouted. The maids placed cherry blossoms in her hair then let it hang loose as her hair curled at the tip. "Would someone please tell me why i am being dressed like a porciline doll?"

Henry, who was just down the hall, chuckled when he hear Keira shout "dad". He opened the door and poked his head in the room as she asked in annoyance, "Would someone please tell me why i am being dressed like a porciline doll?" He stepped into the room, closing the door behind him.
"You called," he asked, smiling, "John is returning tonight, as are many of the soldiers who live here. They will see their families again; it's a cause for celebration. As such, we will have a ball tonight," he said, hiding the true meaning of the ball. He winked at a maid who hid a small smile and winked back in confidence. Keira would never suspect, even if he did give her the journal.
"You look very pretty," he said, and promptly left. He had many things to prepare if tonight was going to go prefectly, starting with John.

Keira huffed as the maids finally finished so she thought. Here they come with jewlery. "But, but a ball. I shouldn't go I am not made for balls." In honesty she never been to one and now she knows she is going to make a full of herself. "Don't worry me lady you will be fine. As the Lord said you look beautiful." They finally finished and breakfast was served. She groaned. "Oh man why didn't you feed me before you dressed me? Now I am afraid to get it dirty." Keira pouted. "No worries my lady we can take it off from the side so you can eat." Keira was now lost in her thoughts as the Colonel said John was returning. Her heartskipped but she still wonder if she can face him. She only read that one page in his journal.

John stood in front of the mirror, dressed in his formal uniform. His coat and pants were pressed, his shoes shined, his gloves an almost impossible white... Tassles, medals, badges of honor and the like adorned him. He sighed heavily. "I guess this is it, isn't it?" The kind, wisened old butler smiled. "It will be wonderful, I'm sure. The ball is being prepared as we speak. Your young bride-to-be won't suspect a thing. Shall we run through it one more time to calm your nerves, young man?" John nodded. The butler cleared his throat and began. "First, there will be the arrivals. You and the colonel will greet each of them. Then there will be dancing and the feast. After the feast, there will be drinks and more dancing at which time you lure the young lady away and ask for her hand. If she says yes, you enter the west entrance and we will all toast to the new bride and groom; your engagement ball will commence as scheduled. And -" "And if she says no, I enter the east entrance and procede to the terrace on the other side where I will throw myself to my death," John finished dramatically. "Come now. Do you really expect her to say no?" John looked back into the mirror as the butler straightened a pin. "I do. And she will..."

Keira was tired and exhausted. She walked in heels for about two hours so she won't trip. She walked until her feet hurt and then after that she pratice using silverware. She never been so tired in her lifr as she didn't even ruin her dress. Keira learn the dishes for anothe two hours and the last thing she had to learn was dance. She remember John teaching her at the festival of the faries. "Dance but I never danced at a ball in my life." The butler and maid poditioned her right as music started and they danced. Keira was dizzy of to many turnrs and remembering each step. Her dress twirled as she spinned and it literally made her feel like a princess. "Yes we are done." She sat down now resting as her hair was now fixed again and her dress is smooth.

John dragged himself down the stairs to the grand hall, his feet feeling like lead. He stood next to the colonel in the recieving line, greeting guests and making small talk. He forced a smile on his face, laughing and talking with everyone, acting much calmer than he felt. When the last guest made their way into the ballroom, the colonel nudged him and pointed to the top of the stairs. John felt all the breath leave his body as he looked up at Keira. Colonel Henry chuckled and said quietly, "I'll leave you two alone. Don't be long. We still have the banquet."

Keira was well rested as the maids finally put some final touches on her. She then was escorted out as her heart kept pounding. She collected herself until finally she was above the stairs. She looked down and the first person she saw was John. She blushed as she then stood thete and smiled at him. A male guest that was up the stairs turned to her and started a casual conversation with her. She didn't know if she had to walk to John or John was suppose to get her. But she greeted the guest that were up the stairs with her.

John felt a twinge of jealousy and annoyance at the guest. He waited for a few moments for Keira to come down with him, but couldn't wait any longer. He abandoned his position in the hall to greet any late arrivals, and climbed the stairs to her. He placed his arm in hers. "My appologies, Soldier Blau. Our Lady Keira is expected." The man nodded with a smile, clearly already intoxicated from earlier celebrations, and waved them on. John made his way toward the ballroom, instructing an officer to show late arrivals to the appropriate rooms. Once inside, he led Keira nervously to the dance floor just as the band began a waltz. It was complicated, but he was confident in the steps and kept up with ease. "I bet I look amusing, dressed in such formal clothing. Rediculous," he laughed, "You, on the other hand, look absolutely stunning." He kissed her hand.

Keira honestly wasn't paying attention as she wanted to see John. She smiled bowing to the solider then leaving with John. She was nervous as she was being escorted to the ballroom. She was nervous as she finally got to look at John. She blushed as she looked him over. "You look handsome." She moved closer to him as she kept up since she praticed all day long.

John laughed. "Handsome in all of these rediculous tassels? I don't believe it." As they spun, the ring shifted in his pocket - a constant reminder of what he had to do. Finally, the band finished their first set and the guests were called to dinner. John's heart pounded loudly, and he could feel himself growing a little pale. He was sure Keira would notice; this made him even more nervous. They took their seats next to the head of the table where the colonel sat. He gave a short toast that was met with hearty cheers, and the feast began. He picked up a glass with a slightly trembling hand and looked up at the colonel. Henry nodded to him in encouragement and turned to talk to another guest.

Keira laughed as she looked him over again. She finally waited until the song ended and then she noticed he eent pale. She wanted to ask him what was wrong but he then took her to the banquet so they could eat. Keira was enjoying the dinner as she noticed his hand was shaking. She grabbed his free hand and squeezed it for comfort as she turned to a female guest talking to her.

Keira squeezed John's hand. He smiled half-heartedly and wished he could make time move slower. He watched Keira all through the meal, laughing and talking with the other guests. He found himself admiring her beauty and grace. I watched the light play over her soft skin, giving shine to her black hair. He smiled slightly. Even if she wouldn't take him as her husband, he knew she would never be alone. Someone would always be there for his beautiful, charming love. All too soon, the dishes were cleared and the party moved once more to the ballroom. They made their way to the center floor and joined the throng of dancers. The time had finally come. He looked slowly into Keira's eyes. "Can we... step outside for a bit? Fresh air."

E Keira enjoyed the dinner as she laughed and talked with so many guest at the tablr. She then saw the dishes were being taken as the guest started to move back in the ballroom. She was ready to dance again until John lookrd at her. She smiled again. "You do look dashing in uniform. And fresh hair would be wonderful." She placed her hand in his.
