Quote: "I-I'm sure you w-would not be left alone for long," T'go murmured reverently. He could not imagine someone like Canoake sitting alone during the hatching. She was too beautiful for that. He fidgeted, wringing his hands. Though he did not know what to say to her, for he was so unworthy of her attention, with everything going on in the weyr he found that speaking to Canoake, while still terrifying, was not the greatest of his worries. "Yes. This is a s-sad night. St-Stoloth is, um, he is v-very upset but in a few weeks I think he will c-calm down. Are you alright?" He seemed genuinely concerned. In his imagination everyone was just as distraught as him and doing their best to appear strong, just like him. He worried what Canoake would think of him when Yirath went Between. He just knew he would cry. Stoloth rumbled and looked toward the Sands. He had missed most of the hatching and found it difficult to stay interested. Under normal circumstances he would have paid close attention to all the dragonets and new weyrlings. The Queen's imminent death overshadowed his usual curiosity. "I do not like change..." Canoake touched his shoulder ever so slightly and gave a wispy smile. Arranging her skirts, she settled into her seat and looked out to the newly Impressed leaving the sands. "You are kind, T'go. We are holding up the best that we can. Kestril wasn't the best Weyrwoman, at least in all her actions, but she was ours. And losing Yirath this way is truly unfortunate."
She allowed a few tears to leak out. Some guys couldn't resist a girl who cried. Though the truth was she had felt like breaking down and crying. But there was no one she could, correct that, would trust to hold her besides her own Tatath. "Tatath may help ease Stoloth down. She does have a way about her. But please, stay with me when Yirath--" Canoake didn't want to finish the statement. She couldn't and truth be told would be grateful for T'go's presence.

The rest of the eggs had been wiggling about, some more violently then others, and when at last the pipping chirp of a plaintively calling dragon drew attention back to the collection of eggs, it became evident that in the days of the eggs hardening, an egg had been buried out of sight. With the other eggs near it now hatched and the pressure eased, the little dragonet had forced its way up and out much like the hatchling crocodiles of earth, and was so covered in sand it was difficult to tell at first what colour the hide was.
Squawking indignantly, the dragonet shook from head to tail, spraying sand over everything near. And so vigourously did it shake that it stumbled and knocked against another egg. A green was revealed from the hidden egg, her eyes whirling red and green rumbled at the remains of the eggs that had suppressed her.
How long had she been struggling? It was impossible to tell, but this one was a hale survivor, that was certain.
Beyond, the second largest egg - the Jovial Eclipse - in the clutch was rumbling too as if the green's bleets of annoyance had roused it fully and after a moment, a leg burst through the shell, followed by the tail as the dragonet moved around, trying to orient himself. Backing out and covered in egg icor, the newly hatched bronze - Three! Three in this clutch! - roared a greeting, loud in volume and posture, looking up to his mother for a moment and then turned to roar his enthusiasm at the rest of those gathered. And then he called, still loud as can be, to his sister as well. What was she up to?

B'nas smiled as the eggs hatched and the dragonets Impressed, this was good, there didn't seem to be any lingering at all. Suddenly one of the greens looked towards the girl that he was watching the green curled around his neck for and he had to hold onto it, it seemed that the girl had Impressed... yes, there it was, that look that couldn't really be described on the girls face and he almost Whooped out loud for her, but a glance at the golden Yirath stopped him and he settled for excited waving instead, maybe Milnth would catch her green after a few years, his lovely Brown didn't often chase a Green on her first ever flight.
He held onto the flit, knowing that it might not be entirely welcome right now and he gave it some dried meat from his pocket, he kept it there for Syndri because it helped to settle the red eyed Green flit.
He spotted a girl in front of the other candidates, saw her step back very quickly and almost laughed at her silliness, if the sharding fool had been watching she wouldn't have gotten seperated from the others. Oh well she'd learn, if she didnt Impress this time round......well ... it would be some turns before this new gold was ready to bring a clutch onto the sands and the sudden realisation hit him like a shockwave and he went white for a moment, eyes staring blindly at the clutch until the Blue Impressed. His focus back on the eggs, waiting for the next shell to crack and was mystified when he heard a piping of a dragonet, when the hidden Green emerged, he gasped, along with most likely several other people around him. Well, this girl was a survivor, it wasn't often that a buried egg hatched, let alone survive to emerge unscathed but the red in her eyes had him slightly concerned.

Pahlen inhaled— a hidden egg?
"Look at that..." he breathed, then winced when the bronze's shrill hatchling's roar careened around the echoing cavern. It cut sharply through the Weyr's omnipresent hum like a wing through the air, and the thrumming closed back in behind it just as surely.
Three, that made three! He risked a glance at Jordan; that was impressive, right? He'd never been a scholar of records, but he knew Bronzes were the truest sign of a strong clutch, and three...
Had Yirath hidden that egg in hopes of somehow keeping one of her children? Or rather, was it just keeping them safe from them, the candidates.

It was almost a festive feel, being out here at the tables. Despite the obvious conclusion of the Hatching that was forth coming, even that sorrow didn't seem to stop the happiness that came with finding that second half of your soul-
*And that second half is going to fall over from dizziness if SOMEONE doesn't stop hogging all the meat tidbits in that bowl!*
The candidate-turned-weyrling smiled and acknowledged that stabbing hunger that felt like her own, tossing a large chuck into the waiting mouth. Only after swallowing did those jaws clamp down on her hand, sucking off the last of the meat juices.
"Can I have my hand back?" The Green paused but did not let go of said hand. Her eyes, instead, whirled a mischievous blue/green as she glanced up at Hers.
*No.*
"Why not?"
*Because I have not finished. And someone needs to show you how to clean your hands properly.*
A laugh and a tug as Mawsith tugged back, careful not to accidentally hurt hers with her fangs. The same could not be said for the robe sleeve, quite possibly.
But! Oh well! Nothing she couldn't fix later!
"Mawsith!" The "scolding" was broken by a small fit of laughter. "Give it back so I can give you more food!"
Mawsith paused and considered the idea, but only let go after a quick flick across her chosens' hand to make sue she missed nothing sublime. As they fell back into the brief pattern of food-toss-into-mouth, Mya tossed a grin towards the others around her.

Kindra stared in utter surprise as a dragonet emerged from the sands, OH! a Green! again she hoped that the match for that green was elsewhere but she had to admire the sheer tenacity of a buried egg surviving to harden and hatch successfully. OH wow, another Bronze, that was how many now ... three yes... impressive and truly worthy of Benden too. She smiled and waited, her hands smoothing down her candidates robes carefully where the were a little rumpled. It wouldn't do to look a mess when HER Dragon came to her.

Lilah couldn't see at first what everyone was gasping about. What was going on? Cautiously, she sidled to the left a little to peer out and see what was going on. A green? An extra green that had somehow been buried? And she looked pretty unhappy about it! Oh, dear.
While the bronze carried on in his excitement, the girl went back to her original place.

In the time since he, his brother, and Theirs had gone over to the meat tables to start feeding their hungry dragons, they had witnessed two greens and a blue hatch and Impress. All of them had been quite lovely, and K'en was happy to see things still going fairly smoothly. But what was this new development-- a hidden egg? That poor green-- that couldn't have been comfortable beings buried under the weight of her siblings like that, nor was it good that she was the only egg that was never touched by the Candidates. Would she be alright?
She had the strength to pull herself out from the sand, Stromath pointed out, pausing in his feeding to look over at his sister and his very vocal hatching brother. If Hers is here then he or she will be found.
"Fair enough..." he agreed, attention turning briefly to the new bronze. He certainly had a set of lungs on him, didn't he. He remembered that egg being just about as vocal at the touching. Hopefully these two would find theirs as well, but in the meantime, back to feeding his own dragon. While the other hadn't said a word, he could still very plainly feel his hunger for himself. Don't hesitate to ask for more if I get distracted, K'en remarked, testing out 'thinking at' his dragon. You come first you know.
The food wasn't going anywhere, the bronze answered simply, seemingly unconcerned. He was being fed again now, so what did a little distraction matter?

Dezima was confused at first as the newly hatched green appeared. Then it occurred to her to wonder where she had come from. Obviously and egg, but which one? She had not seen any of the eggs from the touching reveal the hatchling. So she was a hidden green?! This was very interesting! How could an egg be hidden like so? She stared at the green, still wondering and curiosity growing as another egg started to hatch. A foot and a tail appeared first followed by the newly hatched bronze. A loud bronze. Wait...a third bronze?! Shards and shells! This was rare, wasn't it? The weyrbrat couldn't remember hearing of any other clutches of Benden having three bronzes! This was definitely an eventful hatching, and one that would be remembered.

Eliaza realized she'd been holding her breath when the little green climbed out of the sand. She'd been waiting to see which egg would rock hard enough to send its occupant tumbling out onto the sands. The fact that this egg had been hidden, out of sight, surprised her, yes. Worried her? A little. Were there other eggs hidden away, other hatchlings struggling to break their shells even now? It wasn't like this new dragonet was atypical. She was a perfectly beautiful, willful, determined green. "Calm, calm calm," she murmured aloud, though whether that was for herself, Halifanth, or the green dragonet was anyone's guess.
She was so focused on the green that she didn't make much note of the bronze until he announced himself so insistantly. Three. Three, so far, and more big eggs out there? Oh, Yiranth had done herself proud.
----
There was no ignoring a dragon like that, Cormeric caught himself thinking as his grin returned again. Not a chance on Pern that that one would sneak around or, like as not, let his sneak around for any length of time. Well, he had all eyes on him, now. Determined green, healthy-lunged bronze. Better and better.

The green creeled back at her brother, stomping her feet and lashing her tail in her irate posturing. He, on the other hand, whuffed at her and cocked his head to the side, making a curious - albeit still loud, everything this one did was loud! - warbling sound.
Almost as if she were disgusted, she tossed her head and started towards the girls, stomp-stomping away. One girl stumbled and gasped as the green moved towards her, flashing teeth and whipping tail around to knock at shins. She fell forward, nearly toppling over the green.
And Yirath roared. Loud and angry enough that it stunned everyone, set their ears to ringing, a poignant reminder this was a mother unbound and ravaged by grief, backed in the corner of the hatching grounds. The loud thump of the gold's tail on the ground made the sands jump and the green bleated, darting away from the girl as she felt a shadow loom over head.
The gold, in her speed, had shifted forward and snaked her head out, teeth bared and eyes whirling a frightening red-grey blend.
The little bronze scurried out of his mother's way, calling loudly as her feet fell heavily in the sands very near her eggs, but she avoided them as only a mother could. He ran against her leg, rearing up to push on it, instincts kicking in and his protective side surging to the fore. Crying loudly, the newborn could do little to stop his mother.
And then the roar of the clutch's father pierced the air, loud and commanding as the gold's. It gave her pause, this familiar voice and the jaws snapped shut with a click as she curved to look at her mate. He stood, chest puffed and head held high, staring at her. Whatever exchange occured then was quick and private, the bronze warbling with compassion.... and she withdrew - but not completely. Yirath curled around her unhatched eggs, almost as if clinging to them.
The green looked on with wide eyes and turned to snap at the foolish girl, the sound derisive and loathing as she kicked sand at the unfortunate candidate before trotting away, head high.
The bronze, still crying out, finally managed to climb over his mother's arm and started for the boys, calling now to them instead.

Pahlan was...if not cocky then at least proud. But even he had no qualms with the terror that shot through him. No! She's going to—
He'd taken a step forwards, towards the inevitable bloodbath, without realizing it, and fell back onto his rump on the burning sands when Yirath withdrew, panting in relief and reaction.
...that....that had nearly been...
Pahlen decided that he'd be spending the next little while just sitting here, heat and dragons bedamned. Just a moment ago he'd been marveling at the stress of it all— how little he knew of suffering!

Roscoe had pretty much zoned out as a parade of greens and blues destined for the girls had burst from their shells, his attention moving inward..until Yiraths roar brought him back to his senses, almost unconsciously he took a step back as the angry queen moved forward with frightening speed...by the red star she was going to crush the remaining eggs! And it was only now that Roscoe noted another bronze had hatched - the poor brave soul attempting to save his siblings as the green darted away from her looming and distraught angry mother.
Glancing at the entrance to the sands Roscoe thought very carefully about the wisdom of making his way in that direction and might have done that very thing had not a second dragon called out - this time the proud bronze who had sired the clutch and Yirath withdrew..somewhat. It seemed the danger had passed but Roscoe and he was sure all the other candidates were quite aware that things could have gone in a completely different direction. Letting out a shaky breath he retook his place in the line and watched as the two hatchlings made their way towards the candidates again.

When the last girls Dragons had shuffled through their ranks Viddle had stepped off and away from the group a little ways to stay out of the way. She really didn't want to be, " That stupid candidate girl who didn't get out of the dragonets way". So she made sure to stay good out of the way, yet still in clear sight of any hatchling that may be looking for her. Now her attention had jumped between the girls as they impressed, and lingered shamefully longer on the grape stained girl. However then she turned her gaze back towards the clutch in time to see the green break her way through her shell then dig her way out of the sand, she'd been buried alive. The thought of it made Viddle tremble sightly, though she didn't take her eyes off the stumbling green. Even as the bronze hatched she did not look away from the green until she heard the gasps of others. Quickly she glanced away from the green and back towards the clutch and was shocked. A Third bronze? Her jaw had almost dropped but then the green caught her attention again as she screeched and her attention snapped so she was watching the green again. She watched as the green moved and watched wide eyed as someone else became the girl that didn't move fast enough. As the Queen lunged Viddle took several steps back, afraid, her jaw clenched tightly. oh shards... she thought. When the queen wrapped her tail around the remainder of the eggs she frowned. This couldn't be good.

Kindra watched the odd, and very noisy, exchange between the hidden green and her Bronze brother with interest, it seemed that the Green was standing up to the Bronze and the thought of it made the corner of Kindra's mouth twitch up into a small smirking smile, now this green was something different, something to keep an eye on, especially when she tossed her head, seemingly disgusted at how loud the Bronze was. Kindra stood perfectly still but a girl nearby stumbled.... but she soon made an involuntary squeak as the Gold roared and almost faster than she could blink, got closer than she wanted to be right now, those eyes flashing, those teeth....oh-so-very sharp were right near her but luckily aimed not at her, she moved out of the way, as any sensible sane person probably would at this point.
Trembling slightly as the Bronze father of the clutch roared, she took her place again ...after the Gold moved off. The Bronze, poor thing seemed to have tried to stop his mother but was little more than a fly on a runner's rump and could have been swept aside as easily were it not for mother instinct. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes and ran her hands through her hair, straightening it out and smoothing out wrinkles in her robes. She almost snorted a laugh as the Green kicked sand over the girl that had almost fallen right on top of her. Definitely one to watch.
