The soft red-brown kitten kept one eye closed as her forehead was cleaned. "Good, I'm glad." She said with a smile which gradually faded as she listened intently to what her foster father. "Okay, I'll keep away from that smell." She didn't really understand why, but Cowslip seemed serious about so Wren would do as she was told. There would have to be a good reason why he didn't want her to go near it and that was good enough for her.

A little worried expression formed on her face. "I won't, I promise. I'll stay down here unless you come with me." She didn't like the idea of being seperated from the warren. It scared her. That's how her mother disappeared, leaving her alone in the first place. "Will they come back? The two who got in trouble with Bracken-rah?" Wren didn't get out much yet and hadn't yet had the chance to meet any playmates around her age.

She held her tongue at his words. Mud had a right to be on edge, so there wasn't much she could say. Plus, it was obvious that he was indeed older. Perhaps just about Outskirter age truthfully. She was careful not to disturb him as he worked on widening the hole, doing her best to keep distance but still be near by. Soon it was deep enough for her to get in completely, which wouldn't do but was still good progress. While working, she thought there was a whiff of something... bloody. She shook her head, exhaustion must be making her silly, pebbles and soil don't bleed.

But there it was again. She checked her paws, but there was just the spice of dirt there to sniff. It had been so faint, maybe she was imagining things. Backing out of the hole and into the dying light Frith was giving off, she was nearly certain she could smell it again. Looking up the Down, Ivy swore she could see some movement. She motioned for Pepper and Mud to stay where they were as she took a few cautious bounds up the Down.

It reeked of blood, and oddly enough like... like Dewberry. And Bramblebur? Ninebark and that horrid Owsla Cocklebur? What in the name of Frith was going on?!

Coming closer, her fear was confirmed. They were marching to the scrapes, with Cocklebur in tow, and a very ragged Dewberry. The poor thing looked like she was two breaths away from seeing the Black Rabbit herself. With horror she called out to them.

"Bramblebur! What has happened?!"

"Spare me your excuses," Cocklebur grunted, but seemed to not be in a mood for fighitng at the moment, just a lashing of his sharp tongue. "Your pretty little doe thought she could welcome herself into our burrows. You know what our chief had commanded, and she blatantly ignored it! I warned her to leave but she paid no heed. So I had to use force." Cocklebur wasn't without his own scratches after all, but his wounds were not nearly as severe as the ones he had inflicted upon Dewberry.

"Fiesty little runt, I'll give her that. Or... well, not so much anymore." Cocklebur began to move away from the trio when Bramblebur mentioned the scrapes. "I'll do no such thing. Staying with the likes of you is not something I intend to do. Your lot has brought nothing but trouble to our warren and clouded the mind of our chief. Play upon Bracken-rah's sympathies all you like, but you'll get no such from me!" With that he proceeded off to find his own place to hunker down until he was able to return to the warren.

"Dewberry..."

Ninebark uttered her name, not the nickname he had given her all those days ago, and there was a clear ring of worry to his haunting voice. Sure, he had hated her only hours ago, sure, she may of been marked to die no matter how much she didn't want to believe, but her injuries were horrid and no rabbit deserved to suffer such infliction.

The hefty, crimson furred lop moved forward, covering her other side, now that Cocklebur had stalked off to find his own place. He had remained silent, otherwise, letting his Captain handle the situation with Cocklebur, as he felt he wouldn't be able to contribute without possibly making the matters worse.

Perhaps Dewberry would be on her way to the calling of the Black Rabbit, but he couldn't tell for sure. Clouds seemed to drape over her and obscure his thoughts.

"There is still a ways to go, to go... Once there, there will be rest and we can take a look at cleaning your wounds." He bit back any want to scold or to tell Bramblebur of the cloudiness that hung around her, trying to sound positive instead. Amita was already gone... Like each other or not, they had to stick together.

"Hnn? Yes, I'm sure of it. Once Bracken-rah says that they and the strangers are safe to come here. They have to wait for the sickness to pass, if it will pass." He explained in a hushed, soothing voice. He made a note to, once things had blown over, possibly speak to one of the does with kittens. Surely Wren would be interested in romping about when the warren was safe and she was a little older.

But for now, no. Not until he was positive things were safe and Wren would come to no harm.

"We must stay inside for now, but once things clear and we are aloud back out, and if you are hungry, I can take you to siflay. Until then, we must sit tight. Things will be fine, though, little one." He gave her forehead another lick and smiled softly. He didn't want to worry her too much, but she had to know not to wander off, at least not right now.

She seemed sincere enough, which made him feel so much more relieved.

There it was, that strange, hollowed voice that only came from the one labeled as mad and insane. As much as the other seemed to have some strange form of sixth sense, the last thing that she needed to hear right now was how death was dancing about her paws as it had apparently been doing the whole journey. She wouldn't be surprised if he was following her now. She didn't need to be reminded of it.

Strangely, though, that mockery never came, instead she found him at her other side, aiding to lead her in the right direction of the scrapes, which, as informed to her, were actually quite some distance off. But, the fact that for once he was being.. what would the word be.. positive was quite a shock to her. She would easily imagine Bramblebur at her aid, due to his duty to her father. But for one of the lowest ranked rabbits of their group; one she had mocked and harassed whenever he even looked at her, why would he want to help? Surely he'd want her to wither and die out here, left for the rats and birds to pick from.

But she was wrong, even after being such a spoilt little busybody who whipped all of the "common-folk" with her tongue and selfishness, one of them at least seemed to care about her when they didn't have to. And she knew full well now that she didn't deserve it at all. Had her tear ducts not been sealed over with drying blood, she may likely have wept at this very moment.

She had finally been punished for something that should've been set straight a long time ago. Only now did she realize what a detestable creature she had been, and now she had looks to match how she was on the inside.

Pepper did not agree with being left behind with all the action taking place elsewhere. Alas that is the curious nature of a kitten. Watching as Ivy moved away from them, Pepper glanced sidelong at Mud's burrow. Hmm to stay or to go. That was a tough choice. Turning away from Mud's burrow, Pepper bounded after Ivy. He wanted to know what was going on.

At the sight of the tattered Dewberry and angered Cocklebur, Pepper froze. It seemed that the captain of the guard would be joining them.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 03, 2009 10:35 am

Ears straight up and rotating to catch the slightest whisper, she heard Pepper creeping up behind, disobeying her. She should've known better, but the smell of blood had fretted her. Pausing for only a moment longer to watch the detestable owsla amble off in a different direction of her three comrades; she quickly turned to dash any desire to rush over and help Dewberry. She needed to focus on the kittens, Dewberry had others to help her, and she would be alright. Scared, changed, but there was no way she could die. They had come so far!

"Come on Pepper, there's nothing we can do. We might as well get back to our own little burrow for now."

She looked down at the frozen kitten with worry, and then stood on her hinds to scope out where they'd come from. She could easily see Mud and the tunnel they had made. Heading back down, she waited for Pepper to follow before diving back inside to widen and pat down the earth. If Mud didn't know what was going on, she wouldn't tell him. Best to not worry them anymore than they already where.

Tuckered out, scared, afraid for Dewberry, and torn with guilt over the kittens, Ivy scraped away until she couldn't couldn't any longer and settled down for sleep. She bade the kittens stay with her in the tunnel, though they didn't have to lay with her if they were afraid of getting sick. But she had to sleep and there was no one to help her watch them. Within moments of laying down she was out cold, fatigue winning over everything else in the end.

__________________Mud--

Mud kept digging till his claws hurt and filled with dirt and little pebbles. He pushed into his roomy but low ceiling burrow, it was perfect. He looked out to the others he seemed almost invisible mashing in with the mud and dirt.

He soon popped his head out as he saw them off but returning from somewhere. He looked at little pepper and felt bad

"Pepper you can come in here with me I touched you in the first place so you can share my warmth"

He said smiling to the kitten, it was time he knew others close to his age. And he looked at Ivy too, she understood him which was nice. He looked at her beautiful coat for a hlessi she was pretty even prettier then dewberry before she was attacked.

_____________________Duskshadow--

Duskshadow watched her Chief leave to the burrows and saw woundwort guarding. She sighed and got up and walked over to him. She smiled with her lashes up.

"Woundwort do you think Bracken-rah was right to let them stay?"

she asked as she sat by him wanting to hear his opinion. She tried to stall him and get to be friends so she could continue.

U'tuhlroo went back down the burrows with a conflicted mind. A lot of things had happened but U'tuhlroo had stayed back observing as the Chief and his Owsla handled the trouble. At least the hlessil would soon be far enough away to be impossible to see, scent or hear. She would have to be content with that.

The Chiefs orders to let the hlessil stay had really upset her. She would rather have seen them driven away and would have been delighted to help beat up the hlessi scum, but at least Bracken didn't invite them in for silflay. Hopefully he knew what he was doing. She had to trust him, right? They all had to trust him with their lives right now.

She bristled with anger at the brown outskirter who had first ran around getting in everyone's way and then ran up to and touched one of the diseased. As if that wasn't bad enough he had lured a smaller kitten into the same trap. As far as she was concerned the outskirter could rot with the hlessi for being so bloody stupid, but the other young one was another matter entirely. It

And then the orange b***h, and cocklebur... all the blood. She wondered briefly if the doe would even survive, but if she didn't they would have one intruded less to worry about. It was a sad day indeed. That other doe who had offered to take care of the exiled youngsters seemed like the most reasonable rabbit out there today, and it was bad when a simple hlessi behaved better than the chief and his owsla put together.

Cocklebur had done a number on Dewberry and that was a grievous offense in Bramblebur's opinion. The dark captain had overreacted to the once feisty doe's show of stubborn defiance. Just being around the aggressive Cocklebur made the striped buck want to bristle. "You could've handled her better. There are other ways to get things done than to nearly kill the one who is in offense! Did you not ever think to use your head in lieu of your claws? She is not unsusceptible to the power of words. You used unnecessary brute force to get your way when confronted with someone who wouldn't bow out to your chosen method of enforcement." His tone was surprisingly unwavering when he spoke to the other captain. He was not afraid or intimidated. His anger toward Cocklebur didn't touch his voice but it burned in his eyes.

Bramblebur watched as Cocklebur moved away. "It wasn't our intention amd we do not need your sypathy, Cocklebur. I'd strongly advise you to think twice before you decide to attack one of my rabbits again. We wish to have nothing to do with your foul temper." The striped captain simply watched as the dark buck went off on his own.

A dark tipped ear turned towards Ivy before his gaze followed. He sighed and shook his head slightly. "There was a confrontation between our Dewberry and that Cocklebur. She managed to give him a few scratches so I'm sorry to say that he is to stay near us. Apparently he is above our company. No matter now. We have to get her to the burrows and get her wounds cleaned. Go keep an eye on the youngsters. I wouldn't want for them to worry." When she turned to return to the kittens, Bramblebur turned his attention to Ninebark and Dewberry.

"Don't worry, Dewberry. We'll get your wounds cleaned and tended to then you can rest in a safe, dry burrow."

He looked to Ninebark with a thankful nod. "Thanks for coming with me. It would take much longer to get her to where she can be tended to if it were just me. I appreciate it."

It made sense, what Cowslip was saying. Bracken-rah knew what he was doing when he sent the sick strangers away. It would keep everyone else safe from whatever sickness that might have been brought with the strange rabbits. Wren didn't fancy getting sick so it suited her just fine. Although, she was sorry to hear that a few kits around her age had to be turned away as well.

Wren smiled and nodded at his words. "Okay. We'll be safe together!" She nestled against the much larger buck. She didn't mind having to stick close to her foster father. The kit enjoyed spending time with him, hearing his stories, and goofing off around the calm, laid back buck. "I'm not worried. Things will be okay." She had woken up enough to stand up and stretch a little. As she had slept she had shuffled around Cowslip's dried flowers. "We're gonna have to find some new ones, daddy." She nosed one of the closer flowers.

Cocklebur merely harumphed at Bramblebur's objections and threads. Clearly he was not impressed for the striped buck certainly had no authority on his warren's down. He would just keep an eye on them from a distance for he was indeed above their company. All of them. Not even the kits would be welcomed near him.

The captain left without so much as another word to go make himself his own scrape to settle into. It couldn't compare to his warm den inside the burrows, but it would have to do for now.
