My school has, Hebrew (native language) English (2nd language) Arabic (3nd language. It was a compulsory at middle school but a subject of choice at high school)
I think that it would had been much better if there was the same emphasis over Arabic as there is with English here. Fluency in English is very important for communicating with people all over the world, however, considering the fact that I live in a country which is surrounded by Arabic speaking countries only and most people (including me) cannot even hold a superficial conversation in it... rolleyes Moreover, I think there should be more stress over practice speaking a language that is taught rather than writing it. I don't know how it is in schools aboard, but there is a great lack of practice speaking in the Israel. Our teachers make huge efforts to instill us a wide vocabulary and a good grammar, but it is meaningless as long as we can't speak fluently.
Anyway. In my opinion, it should had been, Russian (as about million people here speak it and because Russia is still a powerful country) Chinese (a raising economic power) Fersi Yiddish Ladino German French Spanish I actually tried to assemble a group of 15 students who are interested in French in order to turn it into another subject of choice for high school, but it hasn't worked out.
I wish it would have had, Polish Finnish Czech Swedish Italian

At my school, it was French and Spanish. Latin WAS offered for my first year, but the teacher retired and they couldnt afford another one.
And in my state, 2 years of a foreign language is mandatory to graduate ^^;; French was 1 and 2, and Spanish went all 4 years!

At my previous school they had these languages: 1. Dutch (Native language, obligatory) 2. English (Obligatory) 3. French (Obligatory for the first 3 years, if you like German better, you can quit this) 4. German (Obligatory for the first 3 years, if you like French better, you can quit this) 5. Spanish (Took it for 6 months, learned nothing and quit) 6. Latin
I would've like to learn more languages at school. Like REAL spanish, because my teacher kept bitching about how the ETA worked in Spain. Sheesh... Or Italian, would've been cool. At some school in my country (The Netherlands) they do give Chinese, heard it wasn't even that hard.

My high school offered only Spanish and French as foreign languages, with a mandatory English class every year.
I don't quite know what my University offers, but I do know that Japanese and German have been added into the mix. I wish Swedish was offered, it is hard learning without a class. ninja

My high school offered: 4 years of French 4 years of German 3 years of Spanish...which was weird because Spanish was the most popular by far, yet they took away the last year. Even the Spanish teachers were confused by this.
My university currently offers majors in: English Spanish French Latin
...Minors in: English Spanish French Latin German Arabic (finally! yay!) Japanese
...and classes only --no degree-- in: Chinese Italian Greek ASL Russian Quechua Portuguese Slovakian (sp?)
The Arabic and Japanese minors are actually Middle Eastern Studies and Asian Studies, so it's focused on the culture and the language unlike the other degrees. You have to do at least the first 4 language classes, but there are 6 offered in total, unless you already speak the language and test out of that part. rolleyes
The last 4 are all offered as part of an MLA class...they alternate semesters. Like, one semester Russian is taught, next semester will be Portugese, etc. It's ridiculous, especially because they usually don't even go past the first level.
I wish you could get a major in Arabic. And at least a minor in Chinese. In todays world, the government pays good money for Arabic-speaking people. And with all the economy and business stuff with Japan and China, a lot of companies need people that speak those languages.

At my high school, they have the obvious regular English classes, but that's not really a language-learning class, so. As for foreign languages, they have German, French, and Spanish; a basic Latin course designed primarily to deepen understanding of the Romance languages and English etymolgy; and ESL classes. On that topic, I think if they had the opportunity they should let people learn Vietnamese - there are a lot of Vietnamese people in this area and in school, and I see more people speaking Vietnamese than Spanish here.

My school only has English and Spanish. gonk
The last one I was at had English, Spanish, and French. Turns out the German teacher quit two years before I got there. stare
I think that they should bring French, German, Latin, Japanese and Mandarin into the school. I don't know who is incharge on the foreign langauge department, but they need to wake up and offer more than just Spanish. Arabic would be great too, and Swedish, although it would be highly unlikely to have.

My current high school offers Spanish and French only. xD My old high school I went to had Latin included though. Not much languages offered which seems pretty sad... Anyway, I believe they should offer more others like Italian, Japanese, Russian, German, and Chinese. Even though, right now i am more interested in learning European languages though especially Russian and Italian. Most people i met around my school is interested in learning asian languages so schools should offer at least two of it for other people who are interested.

For all schools, Chinese and English, since they are becoming the most important languages to know. Also if possible French because it's also very widely used. (Africa and Europe)
In America, Spanish, because it's widely used here. (both North and South America) In South America, Portuguese.
In both Europe and Asia, Russian.
In Europe, German because it's useful.
At least that's what I think..

The problem with languages in public schools in the US is that what they offer depends on what teachers are available. My school taught only Spanish and French when I went there, but the last four years they couldn't keep a French teacher there longer than a year (it's like the cursed DADA position in Harry Potter xd ). They were going to offer Chinese, but the levy failed so they couldn't hire the Chinese teacher they were planning on hiring. Now it's just Spanish, I think. It's all very depressing. Thankfully, my college offers tons of languages!
