Dear Journal,

One of our assignments for the week is to keep a journal about stuff we do at home and what we're thinking. I think that would really suck if someone else got ahold of it though and could tell everybody about your secrets. Good thing I don't have any.

I had to go to class this morning. I don't like it there because everybody is younger than me and sometimes I feel like Ms. Haughton expects me to know everything because I'm bigger. Mom says real school won't be that bad and I'll be with kids my own age. But Raven's going to be there too so it can't be -that- good.

After school I watched TV with mom and Arkie. She says Arkie's not my brother but I think having a little brother would be cool. Its not like Raven didn't brag her stupid head off about Nozomi and said when she was old enough they were going to gang up on me. Now the sides are even!!!! I'm going to show Arkie how to make mudballs and throw them at the holes in the fence when they try to look in at us playing. They can't get mad at him since he's only a baby.

Gotta go. Mom's calling me for dinner

Elliot walked back into the clinic yet again. The young red head looked as if he was looking for someone. Perhaps a doctor. In one hand the boy was carrying a red game boy advance in the other he had something small clutched tightly in his palm.

Youko padded into the clinic, a small toddler in his arms as Raven trudged along behind him. The foxcoon girl was NOT amused by this trip and scowled as she looked around and didn't see anyone else. No wait... there WAS someone else. A redheaded boy she didn't know... with a Gameboy! Grinning, she reached into her pocket and made sure hers was still there, as well as the wireless connection that she used whenever she and Kendall played Pokemon together. Maybe this kid had that game too?

"I'll be over here, daddy," she said, waving him off and walking towards a set of chairs near where Elliot was. She didn't speak to him or get his attention yet... no sense in looking like you were desperately wanting diversion, after all. That was when she noticed something else in his other hand. Curiosity got the better of her then and she tilted her head to the side, ears pricked up. "What's that?"

Youko watched her go, then went to the counter and signed in, cradling Omi against his hip. It wasn't that anything was really wrong... but it was high time Raven got her vaccinations for school, regardless of how much she hated needles. Once they were signed in, he moved to a set of chairs near the desk, bouncing Nozomi on his knee as he watched his daughter.

Elliot jumped a bit supprised. He laughed and looked around a bit nervously leaning in when he opened his hand he showed a white pearly tooth. " I losst it today...so I want the doctss to gwue it back in..." He said with a bit of trouble. Without the tooth the little boy sounded funny when he talked.

Kaze looked over at the Maternity Clinic as she saw a handsome kitsune walk in with a (not-so-happy) baby. This piqued the wereduck's interest: she loved children, and even if she couldn't aquire an appointment she'd love to see all the happy families and babies.

She let out a happy 'squee' as she dashed to the door of the clinic. She took a deep breath and adjusted the Ducky Hat that rested on her head before poking her head in.

"Um... h-hi?" she squeaked as she looked around. Seeing that she wasn't the only one there, the wereduck scuttled in and softly closed the door behind her. She looked around at the cute (a lot of things were 'cute' to her) waiting room before quietly sitting down in one of the chairs, wringing her hands nervously.

Ala landed outside the clinic and folded i her wings, she looked at hte building and smiled, she was a very happy woman right then, and would be even happier when she was pregnant. With that thought in mind she walked up tot he door and pulled it open entering. She looked around "Hmmm not very busy this mornin." she mused to herself

Youko waved to the two newcomers, Omi bouncing in his lap as she chased his tail. It was a grand game to her... he would flick his tail here and there as the girl chased after it and tried to grab hold. It kept the toddler amused nearly every time, and he was grateful for that.

Raven blinked, staring at the tooth as her eyes went wide. "They can do that?" she asked, looking up to Elliot. "Really?? Maybe they can glue this one back in before it comes out!" She smiled then and huffed out her breath, one front tooth wobbling slightly as she did. It had been loose for a few days now, and part of her was scared to death that she was going to wind up walking around toothless for the rest of her life. Her father had sworn that it would come back with an adult tooth, but she wasn't sure if he was serious or if this was another situation like "The goldfish will come back, you'll see!" and he had just gone out and bought another one when he thought she wouldn't notice.

Kaze sat up in her chair before waving back.

"H-Hello, I'm new here, umm..." Kaze noticed that one of the prongs of her Ice Gauntlet was getting rather warped due to the wringing. She meeped and put her hands to her sides like a military soldier before nodding, "My name's Kaze... Kaze Taco." She took a moment to look at the darling little girl chasing his tail, and over at the two children talking about teeth.

"You have such darling children..." she smiled, almost dreamily.

Ala's tail moved lazily behind, her wandering up to the male who had waved she introduced herself with a smile "Hello there, I'm Ala"

Youko beamed a rather proud smile, glancing to Raven, then to Omi. "They're wonderful," he answered, despite the fact that it had taken a near knock-down/drag-out fight to get Raven into the car this morning. He couldn't blame her... he hated needles too.

"That's Raven," he said, pointing to the foxcoon currently talking with Elliot. "And this is Nozomi." The toddler waved cheerily, grinning from ear to ear as she finally caught the elusive tail and began picking at the fur.

" Yes she said they can do al sorts of things! And the boy next door! He came back with a mouth og metal it was cool!" Elliot said waving his arms in the air until he heard the new information about gold fish.

" Ah your gold fish dissappeared too!?!" Elliot asked amazed. " Mine came back but it had white spots it was so cool! Mommy said it was magical!" HE said in awe that he wasn't the only one with a missing gold fish.

Kaze waved back to Nozomi, and the toddler's smile seemed to be infectious as Kaze soon found herself with such a smile on her face.

"Hey Nozomi," she chuckled, "Like coming here with your dad?" She looked over at Raven and smiled before asking Youko a question, "So, are you guys here for a check-up?"

"We're here to get Raven's shots," Youko said, whispering the last word so that the foxcoon couldn't hear him. If he was lucky, he wouldn't have to chase her out into the parkinglot and drag her back in. "She's going to be starting school soon, and needs them."

Omi was on his lap, bouncing happily as Kaze spoke to her, letting go of the tail long enough to answer. "Doker see Wav'n t'day," she said, trying her best to form the words and failing miserably. "See Omi 'nuvver day."

Raven nodded then, sighing as she slouched back into the chair, her toes brushing against the floor as she kicked her legs idly. "My fish was prettier before. It was gold and black and white. When it came back, it was just gold." She looked up to Elliot then, ears pricked forward. "Maybe my fish went to see you and your fish came to see me?" It seemed plausible, anyway... maybe that was why her father had come back with a different fish. Elliot's got lost!

Kaze whistled as she heard that and leaned back.

"I thought people were lying when they said that it doesn't hurt as much when you get older, but it's true," she looked at the ceiling, "I can hardly feel them now. But still... it's for the best, even if they don't realize it."

She practically squeed when she heard the toddler talk. She loved to hear children talk a lot, but she didn't want to act like one of those over-zealous babylovers of doom.

" Hey maybe that's what happened!" Elliot said nodding. " Maybe der on vacationss!" He said. " Oh you have a game boy too!" He said pointing it out. He held out his red SP. " wanna pway me? "

Ala tooks a seat tired of standing "I hope that goes over well, or at least kinda well, my first two grew way too fast to even think about school or shots, it'll be interesting to see what happens this time" she said with a smile "They grow up faster then we expect them too" she mused

Raven just grinned, pulling out her adapter and attaching it to the top of the Gameboy. "Sure!! I play my brother all the time, but he's with mom right now." She dug in her pocket then, pulling out a few games, including the Pokemon Leaf Green and Fire Red, the latter swiped from Kendall's games the last time she'd been over there. "Do you play Pokemon at all? I've got a bunch of the games, and Daddy says that if I behave today and let them poke me with a needle (she nearly hissed on that word) that he'll take me right afterward to prepay for Emerald and we'll get it when it comes out."

Kaze suddenly squeaked, standing up.

"I forgot something! Oooh!" she spun around, still holding Moe.

"It was wonderful meeting you, Mister Youko and Nozomi. Ala, I hope that he comes back, I know that I'll definately come back to this place."

With that, she disappeared in a flurry of feathers.

Ala chuckled "Laters Kaze" she said watching her leave. "Cute little one you have in your lap" she commented to Youko, whom she still didn't technically know but oh well

Youko smiled, nestling in the chair and letting Omi peer around curiously. "She's a Fa'e child... her name is Nozomi and she's getting to be quite a handful. Still, between her and Raven, I'm never bored." He glanced to Ala then, smiling. "Are you here for an appointment as well?"

Elliot nodded and pulled out a few of his games. " I haven't got my shots yet I get thouse next week. But I have to glue my tooth in today!" He said opening his book bag spilling some game boy games onto the floor. " my daddy sends me lots of toys from his work. " He said trying to look for his own Poke' mon game.

Raven grinned, sliding from the chair onto the floor, her skirt arranged over her legs. All in all, she still seemed to favour the bohemian look, the long skirt and peasant top suiting her surprisingly well, considering her tomboyish streak. Youko half wondered if she was finally growing out of that phase.

Like he'd be that lucky.

"I've got both of the wireless ones if you wanna play off those. Unless you have games saved already, then you'll need your own." She poked through the games as well, trying to spot the elusive Pokemon cartridge.

"I've only met a couple Fa'e so far, one was Aylana. " Ala smiled and waved the spaded tip of her dragon's tail at the toddler. Ala looked back to Youko "Yes actually I am, I finally managed to get an appointment with the clinic, my husband and I want another child" she smiled happily

Omi let out a sharp squeal then and latched onto the spaded tail, clinging to it with both hands.

"Watch out, she's teething," Youko warned, chuckling softly. That was when he noticed Jade come in and stared at the rather haggard expression on the woman's face. "You look like hell, Jade..." he ventured warily.

So much for kitsune survival instinct.

Elliot grinned and turned his blue baseball cap backwards he was wearing a very baggy red hoody and just as baggy jeans. He liked the baggy look it was so much more comfortable. Which also gave his mother hell when they went shopping for school uniforms.

" Ah here it is! " He said waving the cartrage in the air. " I got wireless too..." he said flipping his game boy on. " So do you like music?" He asked. " Whats your name?" He asked again waiting for his gameboy to fully turn on.

Raven flipped on her game, letting it load up and selected her game as her brain processed the flurry of questions. "Yep, I like music a lot. Dad says my stereo's on crack because he never knows what's gonna come out of it." Smiling crookedly, Raven glanced up to him, mismatched eyes shining. "I listen to everything from metal to showtunes, and it drives him nuts." At his second question, she just stopped, blinking for a moment before blushing. "I'm such an idiot. Sorry, my name's Raven..." she began, holding out her hand to him. "That's my dad over there, and that my sister Omi in his lap. Well... she's not really my sister, but Dad takes care of both of us, so she may as well be my sister, yanno?"

Ala laughed "Thats always a fun stage" she kept her tail within reach but not so close the todler could do what Luna had done a while back. She glanced at the woman Youko addressed "You going to be ok?"

Jade pulled her attention from the little pink pills in her hand to give Youko a look bordering on sarcastic thanks and desperation. "I can't get it to stop. Always sick. Always. I haven't eaten in days...or kept food down, anyway."

She grimaced at the thought of food and the fact her stomach did a flip to accompany the thought.

" Oh wow! I play the drums! Mommy says that she worried I'ma become a punk when I grow up. " He leaned over and shook her hand. " my names Elliot. I don't have any brothers or sisters but I do have allot of pets. And well Cloud is a bit of a big brother sorta kinda maybe!" He started the game off though he wasn't very good. Raven would probaly beat him.

"You play drums??" Raven looked at him in awe then, grinning. "I'd love to hear you play sometime, are you any good at it?" It wasn't a malicious question... SHE couldn't play drums, after all. Maybe she could talk her father into getting her an instrument to play and then she'd have something to show Elliot next time they met. "I have a twin brother. His name's Kendall, and he lives with my mother. Their house is right across the block from us, we go through the fence to play." Raven leaned her back against the front of the chair behind her, fingers working as she made her move and smirked. This was going to be fun!

Youko's ears fell back as he listened to Jade and frowned. "Gods, that sounds horrible... maybe it's only temporary? When Karma was pregnant, we did a lot of searching about morning sickness and such, and read that some women stay sick for a while." He wished he could come up with something better... and his face showed his concern for his friend. "Maybe the Doctor can give you something to help... or I can find my mother's tea recipe from when she was pregnant."

" I play good! My daddy gives me me a new set every two months from his work place!" Elliot said. " Oh i wanna meet your brother maybe we can start a band together! Um...what will we name it though?!" He made his next move and actually saw an opening to make a hit. Though his mother always taught him to be nice to girls! Raven was tough!

"Dunno if he plays anything.. don't think he does... HEY!" Raven blinked, looking at her now half-dead Pokemon on the screen. "Why you little..." She switched them out then, sending in a fresh one and counterattacked. "My bedroom's in the basement of our house... I bet my dad would let us get instruments and play them down there. He said that he can't really hear my music even when I play it loud."

Jade scowled.

"Would be my luck to be that one woman that stays sick through the whole thing. I got on a scale last night because Dragon pretty much made me...I've lost almost five pounds." Jade sighed and slumped in her chair, growing irritated again. The pills were dumped back into the bottle in her hands, minus two, which were then thrown into her mouth without so much as a hesitation. After a moment to swallow, she continued, her tone mirroring her frustration.

"Lost five pounds AND I have a very uncomfortable set of neckridges coming down my neck and back. This whole thing is messing up my shifting magics horribly. I can't get rid of the damn things and I don't even know how I managed to get them last night. I look like a damn dinosaur."

"Well," Youko began, blinking as he realised that he really could NOT come up with an answer to that. "It's bound to get better?" he offered, giving her a wry smile and a look of 'Don't hit me'. "Look on the bright side... the kid has to be born some time, so it's only temporary."

Omi turned to watch Jade then, tilting her head curiously. That was the white Fa'e's mommy, wasn't it? She half crawled over Youko's lap then, facing Jade fully and beaming a smile at her. "Baby?"

" Wow lucky I want to move into my basement but mom said not until I'm a teen. " He pouted. " Hey that was my Best monster!" He said as it died. " Hey maybe your brother could learn how to sing... or maybe we can get some other kids to play!"

"Maybe we could... I mean, there's a lot of us from here, right?" Raven asked, grinning as she watched his monster go down. "That's okay, you almost killed my best one. Hey, I wonder if my dad would let me get a bass... I like bass guitar." She glanced up then towards Youko to see if he was listening to the conversation, and saw him talking to another woman who looked positively miserable. "I'll ask him about it after we're done here. I'll probably see Kendall soon, I'll see if he wants in on it too. He might be good at singing, he runs his mouth a lot."

Jade smirked at Youko's answer and just shook her head, letting herself lose her irritation. It wasn't his fault she felt like crap.

Omi's appearance also helped her relax a bit. She grinned at the little girl and nodded.
"Yup. Baby," she cooed, now propping her chin on a hand as she leaned forward to look the fa'e over. "You're getting big, Omi...and so pretty!"

Youko relaxed then, happy that at least Jade wasn't completely annoyed by all of this.

Omi blushed at the compliment and brought up both hands to cover her face and hide. After a moment, however, she peeked out, giggling as she saw Jade.

"She can walk now... sort of," Youko said, grinning and ruffling Omi's hair gently. "And she's trying to talk."

Elliot stuck his tongue out the side of his mouth as he battled with his last Poke'mon who was absolutely going to die at the wrath of this girl. " Awe there he goes you win..." He pouted for a minute and turned his game off. " A guitar would be great! I know we can make signs for people to join!"

"WOOHOO!" Raven crowed, holding up both arms. "I win!" Grinning, she let her hands fall into her lap with the Gameboy, and turned her attention back to Elliot. "That sounds good... we could use someone who plays a real guitar... and keyboards... and a singer. I can't sing, Dad says I sound like a dying yak." She stuck her tongue out at that, sighing faintly. "But I could learn bass."

Jade giggled at the little girl's actions, mimicing her briefly in a round of peek-a-boo.

"Does she give you much trouble, Youko?" she asked from behind her hands, fingers cracked enough so she could see Omi's reaction to the game. "She looks like she'd be an absolute doll baby to take care of."

Youko watched the two with a goofy smile on his face. "She's an angel most of the time... other times, I wonder if someone has left an imposter in the crib." Reaching hesitantly, he played with a few of the curls peeking out of the hairties.

Omi giggled again, ducking her face beneath her hands again and kicking her legs a bit as she continued the game. This lady was fun!

Jade let her hands fall from her face and stuck her tongue out a little at Omi before answering Youko.

"Yani was a good baby most of the time. Once in awhile he'd have his fits, but if he hadn't, then I wouldn't have considered him normal."

" I'm sure you'd be great, Raven-chan!" Elliot said taking her hand. " We'd rock! " He grinned at her then turned to his bag tearing through it as if looking for something. He absolutely forgot why he was there in the first place.

Raven's tail swished behind her excitedly, the foxcoon nearly vibrating in place. "That would be great, I bet we could do really well!" Now her mind was racing, trying to find places for her and for Kendall... maybe some of the others would be interested as well.

Just then, one of the medical staff came out and called her name, and Raven's ears fell back flat against her skull. Shrinking down and hunching forward, she was halfway convinced that if she just made herself as small as possible she'd be ignored... but then she saw her father move to stand and whimpered faintly. Glancing to Elliot as if this was the end of the line and she'd never see him again, she whispered. "I gotta go..."

"S'cuse me, Jade, it's our turn." Youko stood up then, tucking Omi against his hip as the little girl waved 'bye' to Jade, grinning. "Raven!" he called, motioning his daughter over. "Oh stop, you're going to live... we'll be done in five minutes, tops."

Jade waved to Omi as she was whisked away and gave Raven a sympathetic smile. She hated shots too, so she knew how it was to not want to go in and have them done.

Elliot was done fishing through his bag. " Awe really?" He said pouting a bit. Elliot look down for a moment. " But we'll see each other again right? Then next time we can plan our band!" He said excitedly as he waved to the girl. When Raven would come out she would see a sign posted by the door with gum.

Raven smiled then, nodding. "Yeah, that would be great!" She wrote down a number real quick on a bubble gum wrapper retrieved from her pocket. "Call me, okay? If I live." Sighing, she got to her feet then and shuffled towards the office door, trying to prolong the inevitable.

"Oh stop it," Youko said, shaking his head. "We're going to go reserve that game for you after this, remember? It's just a few shots..."

"A FEW???" Raven stopped dead then in the middle of the waiting room, not budging. "You said ONE! Now it's a FEW? Uh uh... forget the game, I want a bass." If she was going to wind up dying for this, it was at least going to be worthwhile.

The kitsune's ears slid to the sides and he turned to stare at his daughter. "You want a what?"

"A bass. Bass guitar." Raven pointed towards Elliot. "We're gonna start a band if I live through this, and I need a bass."

Rolling his eyes, Youko reached and grabbed Raven's hand. "We'll talk," he said, starting to drag her towards the door.

Raven, meanwhile, looked over her shoulder and gave a thumbs-up to Elliot. This was gonna work!

Elliot grinned and waved to the girl. He looked up when Cloud walked in and but his hand on the boys shoulder. " What have I told you about running off Elliot?" He asked Elliot waved his arms.

" Cloud Cloud! I made a friend and she's nice and were going to make a band together!" He said excitedly.

" T-Thats nice. " He smiled at the boy. " Now can I ask why you are here? "

Elliot though for a moment then opened his palm. " I want the doctor to glue this back in!" He smilled teeth showing the missing tooth. Cloud only laughed and patted Elliot's shoulder.

Raven sighed, draped across the plush chair in her room and staring at the television. Infomercials... QVC... movies... she stopped at one channel, blinking as her ears pricked up at the groan that came from the screen. "GROSS!" she muttered, ears laying back then as she went past the channel. She made a mental note then to NEVER go to Cinemax after midnight again.

This sucked. 300 channels and not a damned thing on. It was nearly 3am and the foxcoon had made the mistake of curling up on her bed and falling asleep at 7pm. Now she was wide awake and she didn't DARE go upstairs for more than a drink or a quick snack, else Omi would likely hear her and wake up. Then there would be hell to pay. So, instead, she now flipped through the channels mindlessly.

Finally, after determining that there was nothing else on, she turned to the On Demand section of the cable and started going through that. "No wonder those movies are free," she mumbled, going past rows of movies that, while free, also fell into the 'you suck' category. Anime was just as hopeless... she'd already seen most of it from Youko's pirated collection.

As she went to go to one section, she accidentally hit another button and wound up looking at a selection of fitness programs. "Yuck." Sticking out her tongue, she almost exited out of that menu, then something caught her eye. "Belly dancing?" Pricking up her ears, the girl clicked on the info for that show, and found that it was a light cardio workout that also taught belly dancing in the process. "Neat!" she said softly, grinning as she got up and shoved the chair aside to make room. Looking down at herself, she determined that she was in comfortable enough clothing to do this, and started the show playing.

Raven

Dear Diary -

I met a little boy today, while I was out wandering around. Dad was busy looking for Omi, and I didn't want to get in the way or make him any more stressed than he already was. The boy's name is Ilex, and he talks with his mind! I wish I could talk back to him that way, but I couldn't.

Instead, I talked to him and he thought at me. It worked out pretty well, because when he tried to write what he was thinking, it didn't quite happen. He's little still, so he has problems writing and speaking. Maybe I can teach him to talk! After all, Omi picked it up pretty quickly.

I think Ilex is really lonely. He seemed sad, and I liked that I was able to make him smile, at least for a little bit. Once things calm down around here, I'm going to see if he can come over here with his dad. He said his dad's really lonely too, and I know that MY dad gets along with pretty much everyone. Hopefully it'll all turn out well!

Karma blinked at the sound of knocking on the back door, pausing in mid-grab for her morning Pepsi before shuffling out of the kitchen in her bathrobe. Only two people knocked on the back door...Youko when no one was answering the front door, or Raven when she wanted in. As it so happened, this time it was the latter. The young foxcoon stood outside, still in her pajamas, hair still mussed and looking rather put-out.

"Honey...?" Karma asked hesitantly, unlocking the back door to let her daughter in. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." came the answer as she stepped inside with a yawn. "Dad's not, though. He was about to go full goose bozo about something and told me I needed to go over here for awhile."

Karma's ears perked with alarm. Youko getting up before nine on a day that he didn't have to was unheard of in itself, and from what she understood, he ran a lot more of a relaxed household than she did. What could possibly have led to ousting Raven at this ungodly hour?

"Do we have any eggs?" she asked, stretching and plopping down at the kitchen table.

"Think so..." Karma said, still troubled even as she went to the fridge to check. "Did he say why?"

"No." she shrugged. "He said we'd talk about it later. He also said not to call him or anything."

All right, THAT didn't sound like Youko at all...Karma felt her brow knit with worry as she grabbed two eggs out of the inside door. Whatever it was must have been bad, she reasoned...and he didn't want Raven there to see it.

"How do you want'em?" she asked, trying to keep off of the subject.

"Fried." She folded her arms and laid her head on them, her silver hair fanning out over the tabletop. "Where's Kendall?" she asked, her voice muffled.

"Still in bed." The pan clunked onto the stove and she went for the margerine. "I'll probably be rolling his butt out of bed in about an hour for school." Karma regarded her daughter a moment in silence. "Are you sure you wouldn't rather go lay down for awhile? Its still your room too..."

"Nah." she mumbled. "He'd probably just be a jerk and wake me up." There was a pause. "So how's Arkie?"

"He's doing all right." her mother replied, dropping a glob of margerine into the pan to melt. "Learning to walk and talk and all that fun stuff. At the rate he's growing, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up your size soon."

Raven lifted her head just enough to wrinkle her nose at this idea. "Bet Kendall likes having someone around who's just as gross as he is." she said, thudding her head back down onto her arms.

"He's liking it just fine." Karma confirmed. "Just how you're liking having a little sister."

The eggs sizzled as they hit the pan.

"Bet he pretends I don't even exist, huh?"

Karma's ears folded back slightly as she looked over her shoulder at Raven in mid-grab for the spatula. "Why would you think that?"

She shrugged. "Cuz he's a butthead."

"You know, just because he's staying over here doesn't mean you can't come see him whenever you want." Karma reminded her. "Just knock on the back door till someone lets you in. Someone's almost always awake over here."

"I TRIED to talk to him through the fence the other day while he was outside with Arkie and he threw mud at me!"

Karma bristled a bit and sighed. She couldn't keep an eye on him every second of the day and she knew her son knew better than that. "Well, I'll talk to him then." she promised.

"It isn't fair." Raven continued, sitting up and crossing her arms over her chest. "I don't do that kinda stuff to him..."

"You're no angel either." Karma pointed out, turning back to the eggs to flip them. "You've done your fair share of tail-yanking and name-calling."

"Yeah but only when he deserves it." she piped in her defense, eliciting another sigh from her mother. "Omi doesn't act like that. Neither does Yeande or even Glory. Why's he such a dork?"

"Because he's a boy and little boys don't grow up until sometime after college. Some never grow up at all." she explained. She lived in a houseful of males and found this assessment to hold true for all of them..each and every one of them was immature in their own special way.

"Daddy's a boy..." she pointed out.

"Your dad's..." she trailed off, wondering how to put it. "Yeah. Your dad's a boy, but he's an exception."

"Why?" she asked.

"Because."

"Cuz whyyyyy?" she pressed.

"Because I said so." Thank god for parental loopholes, she thought as she plunked the plate down in front of Raven with a fork. "Now eat your eggs." Raven rolled her eyes, but complied, stabbing at the yolk of both with the prongs and watching the yellow leak out over the whites.

Karma checked the clock, debated getting Kendall up to see his sister, and then decided against it. Getting him out of bed when it was actually time was hard enough, and the last thing she needed was Kendall being sour because Rave was the reason he'd been gotten up early.

Her gaze wandered to the back door and lingered in the vicinity of the roof looming over the backyard fence. She bit her lip, wondering what was going on over there and hoping everything was all right...

A letter home
Dear Mom,

So this kind of sucks. We had a power outage or something over here. I don't know what exactly. But they closed off most of the school so now all we can get into is the commons, our rooms, and the cafeteria while they fix it. Its been that way for almost a week and I'm bored.

I'd call but my phone card is out of minutes so unless you want to send me another one I'll just have to send letters.

But anyway, guess what? They had this contest type thing. They didn't tell us it was a contest, they just handed out papers and told us to fill them out if we wanted to. I almost didn't because they said it wasn't going to be on the test and didn't count toward our grades, but I was bored so sue me. So I filled this thing out and handed it in. Most everybody did one, I think. We must all have been bored.

Anyway a few days ago I got a knock on my door from some weird lady with black hair over her face. Not entirely over her face, she didn't look like Cousin It or anything but you couldn't see her eyes. It was kind of creepy. So she hands me this scroll and tells me to take care of it and I'm thinking "Wow, SWEET!" but then I remembered I don't know how to take care of a scroll.

Are you supposed to feed them or something? This one doesn't have a mouth. I tried giving it cheerios, but they just fall through the tube when its all rolled up. Its got this tail-type thing that it swishes around a little, but that's about it. And it doesn't like it when I touch the little gold hoops on it for some reason. It rattles and stuff. Maybe she just meant I was supposed to keep people from scribbling on it or something. Its up in my bookcase right now on the top shelf.

So hows things there? Everything going okay? Tell Talon he's not allowed to play my video games and that he can get his own if he wants some!!!!!!!!!!

Love,
Kendall

A Note From Mom
Dear Ken,

Things here are fine. I wouldn't worry about Talon getting into your video games as he's very busy at the moment. His and Yeande's baby was born a few days ago and they've had their hands full trying to adjust. His name is Zhane and I think you'll like him when you get home. He seems to be a very happy and playful baby so far.

I'm sorry to hear about your power situation. I sent along another phone card for you and I hope to hear from you soon. I miss having you and your sister around here because it gets too quiet. Arkie misses you too and just drooled on the paper to show it. Ugh!

A scroll, huh? Congratulations! Unfortunately, no, I couldn't tell you what she meant by taking care of it except what you mentioned -- keeping it out of reach and not letting anybody draw on it or tear it or anything. Feeding it might be a bit much. Oh, and your dad says not to draw anything lewd on it. I'm pretty sure he's only saying that because that's what HE'D do in your situation.

Please keep me updated on what's going on over there. If you and Raven need to come home early or something because they can't get things up and running again, I need to know about it.

Stay safe and don't get into trouble.

Love,
Mom

Dear Diary,

Quote:
Well, it appears Kendall will be coming home for a bit while whatever is going on over at Somonen straightens itself out. Its really too bad that the first classes haven't even started, but I guess accidents happen.

It occurred to me today that the kids' birthday is coming up and I'm not sure what to do for them. Kendall is going to, no doubt, want video games and I'm not sure about Raven anymore since she's starting spending most of her time with Youko. Maybe I'll just take them out to dinner or something nice like that. Or maybe there's a movie opening they'd like to see. I'd ask them if they wanted to invite some friends over or somesuch, but I don't think that would be a very good idea with the new baby in the house. Talon flies off the handle so easily at everyone and everything, I have a feeling it would be hard to have a good time while he and Zhane are around.

Hmm....I hate feeling like a stranger in my own kids' lives sometimes. And I know its only going to get worse when they become teens and start looking into moving away from home for good.

....great, now I just depressed myself. Happy thoughts, Karma...birthday thoughts.

Kendall squirmed at the dinner table, looking up from his plate of roast beef every now and then to regard the other members of the family. Everyone was minding their own business...Karma was busily arguing with Arkanti over whether or not it was appropriate to gargle peas at the table and Talon was trying in vain to get Zhane to eat a jar of pureed chicken. Having a family where things were constantly chaotic really made it hard to bring things up at a good time...

"Hey, um...mom?" he said after a moment.

"In a minute, Ken. I don't CARE, Arkie! It makes a mess, first of all, and second of all, you could choke."

"I'm not gonna choke." the fa'e replied, stuffing a forkful of scalloped potatoes in his mouth, swallowing without chewing, and then belching loudly.

"Sometimes I think you do these things JUST to get a rise out of me." Karma growled.

"Mom...?"

"What, Kendall?" she asked, turning to look at him with an expression of utter exasperation. The foxboy hesitated a moment, biting his lip. With the way things were looking, there was never going to be a "good" time to bring it up, so he may as well just say it now and get it over with.

"I wanna learn to drive."

Karma's eyes widened slightly, though she tried to make a quick recovery.

"Really..."

"Yup." he poked another forkful of meat into his mouth and chewed thoughtfully. "There's a game shop that opened up over on Dewsbury and I wanna check it out."

"You know, you CAN ask me to take you places..." his mother pointed out, lifting her glass of milk to her mouth and taking a swallow. Kendall sighed and rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, but I gotta learn sometime." he pointed out. "You're not always gonna be here to cart me around and plus..." his eyes darted off to the side as though he was embarrassed. "....I was kinda....thinking of getting a job a little bit."

"You're kidding me..." Karma said, quirking a brow incredulously. Kendall blinked and then straightened in his chair.

"Why not? I'm old enough. Its not rocket science to work in one of those retail places anyway. You've just gotta be all 'yessir' and 'no ma'am' and 'ma'am, please don't let your kids take a dump on the floor' and stuff."

"It isn't that." she said with a dismissive wave of her hand. "I just thought for sure that I was going to have to twist your arm to find a job when the time came like I did with Meka and Talon."

Talon flicked a reproachful glare in her direction a split second before Zhane sneezed a spoonful of chicken all over himself and his father.

"Nah...besides, the holidays are going to be coming up soon. It would be nice to have some spending money."

"Well....I really don't see any reason to say no." she shrugged. "With you not in school right now, getting a job probably isn't a bad idea. Talon?"

"Don't drag me into this." the ijiuo grumped, wiping chicken goo off of his face as Zhane giggled merrily in his high chair.

"You wanna give Kendall some lessons?"

"Am I speaking in Greek? Did I NOT just say 'don't drag me into this'?" he demanded to know.

"C'mon...Kendall's a quick learner. Aren't ya, Ken?" the foxcoon goaded, nudging her son in the side with one elbow.

"If its anything like GTA Vice City, I should be all set." he smirked, watching as Talon set his jaw and shook his head.

"Its NOTHING like GTA." the ijiuo told him. "Its a lot easier than it sounds, its boring, and after you learn, you become the taxi for everybody who hasn't."

"Right. So when's good for you?" Kendall inquired, watching with amusement as Talon jolted.

"You stop right there. I never said--"

"Oh for god's sake, Talon, just take him out to an abandoned lot someplace, teach him to drive, and this can all be over." Karma growled.

"Yeah, c'mon. I didn't HAVE to show you how to get past that part in Fatal Frame that kept kicking your a**." the foxboy pointed out.

"I never asked you to." Talon growled, miffed at being reminded he'd actually resorted to accepting assistance. "Fine. Who's going to watch the baby?"

"Me!" Arkie spoke up through a mouthful of half-chewed roast, potatoes, and peas.

"*I* will" Karma corrected before Talon could pitch a fit about it.

"Then I'll take him out after dinner." the ijiuo relented sourly. "And I hope he learns fast enough to figure it out in an hour because that's all I've got. I have work tomorrow."

"Probably not, but we can always try again another day." Kendall offered, ignoring Talon's resulting cringe.

"And pick up some ice cream while you're out." Karma added. "One of you barbarians scarfed it all down this morning and didn't leave any for me. I don't like to name names but I have a pretty good idea of who it might have been." her eyes wandered in Arkie's direction as he looked back at her, perfectly poker-faced.

"Who?" he asked, sounding clueless as she slapped her forehead.

"I give up..."

Kendall chuckled and then returned to his meal. That had gone over better than he'd thought. No theatrics about running people off the road, no accusations that he was trying to learn to drive to run away from home, or any of the horror stories about overprotective moms he'd heard from others. Then again, Karma wasn't necessarily overprotective either, which he was grateful for.

Now if he could just convince her to let him have his own computer with internet access in his room, he'd be all set.

"So...how did it go?" Karma called, having heard the car pull up in the driveway and then the sound of someone entering the house.

"It went." Talon replied from the other room, taking off his jacket to sling it over the arm of the couch as Kendall tried to head off to his room immediately.

"Hey...HEY!" Karma said sharply, stopping him in his tracks. "I want to know what happened."

"He passed. I don't know what his problem is." Talon grumbled.

"I'm asking -him-, Talon." she replied. The ijiuo glared at her and then rolled his eyes before shoving past Kendall down the hallway to go find Zhane. "Ken?"

"Yeah I did okay, I guess." he told her, fumbling his wallet out of his pocket and opening it to show her the temporary license residing in one of the plastic sleeves.

"Honey, that's great!" she smiled, crossing the room and hugging him. "Congratulations!"

"The instructor said I just did the bare minimum to pass, though. He said I wasn't gonna live very long if I kept driving like I do." Kendall said, sounding somewhere between dejected and flat-out pissed off.

"So you'll get better. I bet he wasn't a pro behind the wheel either when he first started out."

"He had a brake on his side of the car, right? And the ******** kept STOMPING on it whenever we came to a light like I was just gonna plow right through."

"Ken, the important thing is you passed and you have your license now." Karma told him. "And the even MORE important thing is now I can send you out to get ice cream."

"Aw, ma..." he complained. He wasn't sure he really WANTED to do anymore driving tonight. He'd been driving all damn day, after all. And after being looked at like he was some sort of impending mass murderer by the instructor every five minutes, he thought maybe he'd take a break for a bit.

"Are you still going to apply at that video game store?" she asked, changing the subject.

"Yeah...I thought I might if they're still taking applications. Except now Raven wants me to play taxi for HER..."

"Yeah, well....it would be nice of you to help out your sister, but I'm not going to make you." his mother said, ruffling his hair. Kendall blinked, eyes widening.

"Really?" He'd fully expected her to tell him that he had to. Not that he'd especially been planning on telling her no in the first place, but it was nice to know the decision would get to be his in the end...

"Really. You guys are almost adults now, as much as I hate to say that. We're fast reaching the point where I can't twist your arms to force you to get along anymore. And nothing's really stopping your sister from learning to drive on her own. Its not like Youko doesn't have a car."

"Heh...guess not." he said, shrugging. Now if only she'd taken his side earlier...better late than never. "What kinda ice cream do you want?"

"Oh Ken, you don't have to go anywhere." she laughed. "I was just teasing."

"Yeah but now I kinda want to." he told her. "And Baskin Robbins is like...five blocks away."

"Well, if you're going anyway....how about some peanut butter chocolate?"

"Good enough. What about everybody else?"

"Here..." Karma padded over to the computer where her own wallet was sitting in the tray of the printer and opened it, pulling out a twenty. "Just bring home a couple buckets of cookie dough and they'll be happy. Provided Arkie doesn't get ahold of it first and inhale it all."

"Inhale what??" the kelpie fa'e asked, poking his head into the room.

"Nothing." the foxcoon told him. "Ken's going to the library." The boy's nose wrinkled immediately in distaste.

"Books?? BO-RING!!" he declared, zipping back to the TV. Kendall and Karma shook their heads in a similarly exasperated manner.

"You be safe, okay? Seatbelt."

"I know, mom, I know....they've been saying it all day." he groaned.

"Well I'm saying it again. Because I love you and want you home in one piece. How's that?"

"Kay. Talk to you in a bit, then." he told her, fighting the urge to roll his eyes as he fumbled the car keys out of his pocket as he headed for the door again. As Karma stood there, listening to the sound of the car starting up in the driveway, her eyes misted over a bit.

Her baby was growing up.

Dear Diary,

So, here we are...I guess this is what the first twinges of Empty Nest Syndrome might feel like if I had anything RESEMBLING a goddamn empty nest. I'm still standing by my decision of not having anymore kids (because you've seen how well that works out every time I've said it in the past), but it still is difficult. I still remember bringing the twins home from the hospital...how either of them fit in the crook of my arm and how they needed their mommy and daddy for everything.

Now I turn around and Kendall's driving. On the one hand, that makes me happy...it means that now he can take himself places instead of making me drop what I'm doing to drive him. On the other hand, that means the next step is finding a job. And then his own place. And then me only hearing from him on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and when he needs to borrow money.

I feel old. I'm not even thirty yet so that makes it even worse. I wonder if I'm going to feel the same way when Arkie grows again and starts staying out till all hours. ....then I remind myself that, no, that isn't a cause for moping, THAT is a cause for celebration.

God I'm already thinking ahead to when both of my boys are gone and all I'll have left is helping Talon bumble through Zhane's upbringing....at least until he and Yeande finally wise up and get THEIR own place, and then its just going to be me and Dave.

....I can't even remember what it used to be like only having two people in the house. Everything is going to seem so....quiet.

And thinking about it is depressing me, so no more of that. I've still got plenty of time. Which is the same thing I said when Kendall was still a child and Arkie was still a baby.

Look, I'm going to level with you. I'm going to have twelve or thirteen unbathed nerds in my house with their faces buried in computer monitors all day screaming at each other about being fragged.

LMAO but Im gonna be there.
As I said. It would be nice to have at least ONE person there who knows how to have a conversation outside of the internet.

Raiden, you say "LOL" in real life...
So??
I'd have to ask my mom. But dude, its her car. There's no way she's going to let me drive it off for a whole week to play computer games with people from the internet.
You want me to call her and talk to her?
That'd be convincing. "Hey mom, talk to this nice man from the internet who's ten years older than me. I swear he just wants to play video games and not rape me or anything"
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Fragmaster and his gf are going to be driving through your way when they come down, they could give you a ride here and back.
I'll ask, but I already know she's gonna say no. Anyway, are we gonna level up or what?
Give it a few minutes. I want to see if the threat of idiocy has passed.
Why don't you just ban them...?

Kendall headed for the door to his room, wondering how in the hell he was going to convince her to let him do this. His mom, thankfully, wasn't one of those paranoid mothers who thought that everybody on the internet was a stalker or a pervert...hell, she'd met his dad there after all...but he had a feeling she wasn't above pulling the "You don't even KNOW these people and you're too young to run off like that" card.

Well, it was worth a shot.

Youkochylde
Raven was in a rut.

It wasn't just a rut, it was one of those ruts that seemed impossible to get out of. The very act of getting out of said rut was more trouble than it was worth, and she didn't even know if she WANTED to anymore, just because it was better to stay there and not have to think about it.

Noblewolf tells the guild: "Ikkle, where are you?"

The green text flashed up on the secondary chat window on the screen. The one designated for private tells, guild chat, group chat, raid chat... anything that she might actually WANT to see instead of the innane chatter that usually filled her screen.

You tell the guild: "Remember that glitch from last week, where people were getting stuck on the stairs to the library?"
Noblewolf tells the guild: "Yeah... why?"
You tell the guild: "It's not gone yet."

Narrowing her eyes, Raven tried for the umpteenth time to jump out of the crook of the railing that seemed to catch hold of her character's foot and hold on worse than superglue. Nothing. Not even a barest hint of movement. Ducking out of it hadn't worked. Trying to move in any direction had failed. Petitioning a GM to get her to another area in the zone would only work when there WERE GM's on the game... and as any player of EverQuest will tell you, the only time you can't find a GM is when you need one.

You tell the guild: "Dammit, can someone come up here and get me?"
Noblewolf tells the guild: "I can come up there, but I'll not be of much use."
Raighne tells the guild: "I can't port you out, or I would."
You tell the guild: "We don't have a single druid or wizard on??"

"Raven!"

The girl spun around in her chair nearly fast enough to fall out of it, staring towards the basement stairs, where a rather annoyed fox was standing in a pair of sleep pants. "WHAT?!? I wasn't doing anything!"

Youko's eyes narrowed as he looked at his watch. "It's three in the morning, you have an appointment at nine, a job interview at 11, and you're going to be a zombie if you don't get some sleep." He wouldn't have even known she was online if he hadn't come downstairs to relieve a case of the midnight carpetmouth. The cider in the fridge had been calling to him... and he happened to see the light on from the crack under the basement door.

"Daddy, I'll be off here in a few, I swear, I just have to get out of this spot! Someone in the guild is coming to get me. As soon as I get unstuck, I'll log and go to bed, I promise." Raven looked at him with 'the eyes', her ears laid back pitifully as she stared up at him.

And it worked just about every time. Sighing, Youko waved a hand at her. "I come back down and see the light on, and I'm going to call the cable company to have them disconnect the damned modem." He stalked back up the stairs then, closing the door.

Raven pricked up her ears, listening for him to ascend the second floor stairway, then darted over to turn off the nightstand light that he'd seen. The computer monitor was turned away from the basement stairs, so he'd never see that. By the time she got back to her screen, an array of text was waiting for her.

Acxadru tells the guild: "I can come get you, Ikkle. Where are you?"
Raighne tells the guild: "She's on the library steps."
Acxadru tells the guild: "Which ones? There's FOUR."
Noblewolf tells the guild: "Seven if you count the three ramps."
Raighne tells the guild: "The glitch only happened on the stairs though."
Acxadru tells the guild: "Ikkle??"
Raighne tells the guild: "Maybe she got hold of a GM."
Gaiatears tells the guild: "Evening, all! *HUGS HUGS*"
Noblewolf tells the guild: "*HUGS BACK* Hi there, PITA."
Gaiatears tells the guild: "LOL!"
Raighne tells the guild: "Evening, Gaia!"
Hephastian tells the guild: "Evening, Gaia."
Acxadru tells the guild: "Hi Gaia. Oh LOOK! The silent one speaks."
Hephastian tells the guild: "I'll remember your comments when you need a rez in the Plane of Hate."
Acxadru tells the guild: "You love me and you know it."

Ticking at the keys quickly, Raven hoped she hadn't missed her one chance at a ride out.

You tell the guild: "Sorry about that, dad caught me on the computer and threatened the cable."
Raighne tells the guild: "OUCH! Better not risk losing that."
You tell the guild: "No worries. If he gets rid of it, he can't play HIS games. It's an idle threat and we both know it."
Noblewolf tells the guild: "You sure you're not going to get in trouble?"
You tell the guild: "Nah. Not unless he comes down here again. Acx, where are you?"
Acxadru tells the guild: "In front of the Nexus stone, waiting for you to tell me where YOU are."
You tell the guild: "Northwest stairwell, up near the top. You can't miss me, I'm the tank stuck on the railing."
Acxadru tells the guild: "Okay, omw."

GOOD! She was finally getting out of there. Acxadru was a druid, which meant that he had group teleport spells that would get her back to safety. Being a warrior sucked at times, especially when you had no magic. Before too long, she saw the familiar face of a wood elf on her screen, laughing at her.

Acxadru says: "Look! A newfangled decoration for the stairwell... I knew it was getting boring in here."
You say: "Ha, frickin' ha. Get me out of here please?"
Ikkle looks to Acx with soulful eyes.
Acxadru says: "Not with the eyes! Okay, okay, accept the group invite and we'll get somewhere else."
Acxadru has invited you to join a group.
You have joined the group.
Acxadru begins to cast a spell.
Acxadru tells the group: "Bunch up or WALK... Inc port!"
You tell the group: "TY hon!!"
LOADING... PLEASE WAIT.

Raven sighed in relief, leaning back in the chair. She glanced towards the clock then, smiling faintly. Three thirty. She could still get a good four hours sleep if she made it to bed by four. Her appointment, she was not looking forward to. Youko had finally put his foot down and stated that he was NOT having grandchildren anytime soon, and was taking both of his girls to the GMFC the next day to get birth control. The interview afterward would be simple, it was at the New Age shop right across the street from the gaming store Kendall was applying at. If they both got the jobs, it would be wonderful... and her father would get off her tail about doing something with her life besides playing EverQuest. THEN she could take a nap after all was said and done.

You have entered the Plane of Knowledge.
You tell the group: "Thankyouthankyouthankyou! *HUGS*"
Acxadru tells the group: "*Hugs* You're welcome! No more stairs for you. Take the ramps."
You tell the group: "Oh, I will, believe me."
Your group has been disbanded.
You tell the guild: "Okay, I'm out of the stairs and back where I belong. NOW I gotta head to bed before my dad skins me."
Noblewolf tells the guild: "You get some sleep and we'll see you when you can get back on, okay?"
You tell the guild: "Yes, daddy. *Smirk* I probably won't be on til tomorrow evening."
Raighne tells the guild: "See ya, Ikkle! Hey Acx, you want to go group in Umbral for a while? I need to get back to level 41 tonight."
Acxadru tells the guild: "Sure, just let me get some buffs first. Meet me at Nexus in five?"
Noblewolf tells the guild: "Night, Ikkle."
Gaiatears tells the guild: "Night!"
Acxadru tells the guild: "Night, hon!"
Raighne tells the guild: "Okay."
It will take 30 seconds to prepare your camp.
Hephastian tells the guild: "You guys need a cleric?"
Raighne tells the guild: "Always good to have."
It will take 25 seconds to prepare your camp.
Acxadru tells the guild: "I dunno, he said he wouldn't rez me."
It will take 20 seconds to prepare your camp.
Hephastian tells the guild: "HOW many times have I said that?"
Acxadru tells the guild: "One too many? :D"
It will take 15 seconds to prepare your camp.
You tell the guild: "Aww.. play nice boys. Gaia, keep 'em in line? They'll kill each other otherwise."
Raigne tells the guild: "You be nice, or I'll tell your father you're still up."
It will take 10 seconds to prepare your camp.
You tell the guild: "And then you'll have to explain why you blew him off tonight to play EverQuest, Envy."
Noblewolf tells the guild: "LOL!!"
Gaiatears tells the guild: "*DIES* She's good."
Acxadru tells the guild: "LOL!"
It will take 5 seconds to prepare your camp.
You tell the guild: "See? Blackmail's not a forgotten art. BYE!"
Raighne tells the guild: "Evil, EVIL girl..."
You tell the guild: "Always."
LOADING... PLEASE WAIT.

Snickering still, Raven exited out of the game and shut down the computer. She was already in her pyjamas, so it was a simple effort to make it to bed. Tomorrow would be amusing, on many different levels, but at least for tonight, she was happy.

Dear Diary,
So the current household situation is kind of...I dunno. It sort of sucks. Mom's moody because she's expecting again and its kind of taking its toll on everybody. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited as hell to have a new brother or sister on the way. Playing big brother is awesome because everything you do, little kids think is cool, provided they even pay attention (I'm not counting Arkie in this case). I just hope everybody can survive till the baby's actually born.

I guess the s**t hit the fan when mom told Talon about it and now he's moving out and taking the kids. I can't say I'm gonna be too sad to see him go, but I'm going to miss Zhane. That little guy never has a bad day, it seems like. I kinda wish everybody else would take a lesson from him. Seems like life would be a lot easier if people would just laugh and say "Ut oh!" when something stupid happened and get over it instead of spending months being pissy.

Mom also brought home this leaf thing recently that's supposedly going to become a kid too. So it looks like I get TWO new siblings. Man, this house is always so crowded. Every time someone moves out, two more people move in, it seems like. I kinda wish *I* could move out sometimes, but I have nowhere to go. Maybe its time to start watching the "Roommate Wanted" ads or something. I could probably pony up half of rent with my current job.

Bonus, I would have an excuse not to have to taxi Raven around anymore. I don't mind so much when we both work a closing shift, but when she's opening and I'm afternoon, the last thing I want to do is haul my a** out of bed and drive her across town.

Anyhow, this game of Silent Hill 3 isn't going to finish itself.
