Are you from Texas? Texas has got the best bands ever. period. WOOSHA. domokun
Yes, Texas bands are quite good. They have technique like you won't believe, they play incredibly well, and they produce some of the best musicians around.
But while they have talent in abundance, the Texas band that I am a part of lacks unity. We're also about 200 people, so that might play into it.
But Texas bands are really an entirely different attitude. I hail originally from Washington DC, and the transfer over to a Texas band was...insane.
I found quickly that EVERYONE was good. Some were great. Still, others, were insanely good.
But what I noticed was that we didn't have very much spirit. We had pride, but not in excellence...It was all about beating the other bands. Winning. Trophies.
Those aren't bad things, but band should center less around making the program look good and more around making the students into better people. (Because we all know how band makes you a better person, teaches you hard work and commitment etc, etc...)
Forever, I will have a certain little disdain for Texas band programs. While they produce and they are incredibly insanely good at what they do, the unity suffers when the program is program-centered instead of student-centered.
