I usually just go back and forth from Goldenrod to the Daycare center on my bike, with a Magmar of course.

I just ride back and forth in the day care area. Its a straight way so...no issue for me. 3nodding

Anything with the ability "Flame Body" and "Magma Armor" cut steps, if I remember correctly. Meaning you can use any of Magmar's evos, Slugma's evos, and Camerupt.
