@Steffyss, it'll do that until...a long time. o.o So don't worry about it...
And it generally only does that to your own account, too.

@xuebiii, wow, interesting insight! But the main similarity between Lucius/Brutus and Lucius/Riddle really is just the name. Malfoy follows Riddle because the pureblood purging goes along with his beliefs. Lucius follows Brutus because he's a slave, and doesn't have much of another choice. Also, I'd say that Cassius in the Lucius/Brutus situation is the guy who really knows what he's doing (while Brutus is the runaway puppet) but Riddle in the Lucius/Riddle situation is in power and control the whole time. Well, besides the whole less-than-a-ghost thing, but let's ignore that for now. Another thing is that Brutus is all honorable and like, let's not kill anyone we don't need to. But Voldemort's goal isn't for the "good of the people" (like Brutus') it's for the good of the purebloods, of which he isn't even one. (It's also based on a prejudice, which carries on to Malfoy).

Wow. Aftering thinking about that, I wish our teacher would ask us to compare and contrast Voldemort and Brutus for our final essay. The same way I wish magic existed... -sigh-

Which pretty much further accentuates that Voldemort is more like Hitler. But I guess you can draw a conclusion that Brutus can be Voldemort's Caesarian (spelling?) counterpart.
I mean, they both believe they are being "honorable" by cleansing the world of overambitious (in Brutus' case) or unfit (Voldemort's case) people. I think that Lucius the servant/slave being Lucius [Malfoy] isn't a very good comparison. True, that they both seem to serve someone greater who strives for a large goal. But you know, Romans pretty much disregarded slaves back then. Although Voldemort could've disregarded the Malfoys, he wasn't really in a position to do so because the Malfoys are filthy rich! =D
Cassius, though, could be compared to Salazar in a way, however in that they both inspired the actions to start having some facet of reality (Caesar's murdering and "taking over the wizarding world" mentality).
Or maybe I'm just rambling for no reason... sweatdrop

Hah it's ok, here, rambleing is good. We like it. A lot. It shows intellegence, or (in my case) the rare moment of clairity that can occasionally surface after spending eons trying to push through my less important thoughts such as Scottie.

Your rambling was quite an interesting read.
^ ^
We don't, unfortunately, know very much about Salazar. And because I've overdosed on fanfiction, my information is probably a bit...strange.
We don't know whether Salazar actually didn't like muggleborns (I don't think JK Rowling ever said that Slytherin had no muggleborns or half-bloods)--we only know that he liked ambitious, cunning people. Which doesn't imply purebloods. Potter was a half-blood, and the Sorting Hat wanted to put him in Slytherin...
Anyways, since that has nothing to do with anything, I'll get back on track. Cassius went and 'corrupted' Brutus and was all like, Caesar should die, he doesn't deserve to be king, you're just as good--maybe better--than him. But Salazar never actually spoke to Riddle, and all throughout his life Riddle felt a deep-seated hatred towards muggles (from the orphanage and his father) which then transfered into a hatred of muggleborns.
Confusing.

Oh! I have a question.
Do any of you understand the HP timeline?
Like, generation-wise.
I'm not even sure if these names are correct, because I probably picked up a few from fanfiction...
I'm assuming that Abraxas Malfoy, Tom Riddle, Hagrid...something..., Eileen Prince, Minerva McGonagall and other teachers (not including Dumbledore) were at school around the same time?
Then the next generation down would be Lucius Malfoy, Narcissa Black, Bellatrix Black, Regulus Black, Rodolphus Lestrange, Sirius Black, James Potter, Lily Evans, the Longbottoms, Remus Lupin...etc. Then following them shortly would be Nymphadora Tonks.
Afterwards (about a generation down...let's say 5 years) would be the HP generation, with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco...etc.
It doesn't make much sense though.
I'm guessing that Lucius and Narcissa came earlier than Sirius, James, Lily, Remus (etc) because the book never mentions encounters between the two. But Snape was at the time of James and Sirius, and he's connected to Lucius? Here I'm befuddled, because lots of fanfics say that Snape and Lucius are close. >.>
Anyways. Any of you have clarifying comments?

I have a question: I was listening to the newest episode of pottercast today and they discussed what house Umbridge was in. So I'm wondering what house do you think Umbridge was in and why?
PostPosted: Fri Mar 14, 2008 6:45 am

I think...Umbridge didn't deserve to go to Hogwarts. D<
lol
Eh.
Let's see....
She believes only what she believes, and won't listen to anyone else. Sort of? Agreed? She abuses her power, but she thinks she's doing the right thing. Kind of? She is slightly sadistic. Dunno what she gets out of it. She must have gotten to her place of power somehow, so she has to be smart...somewhere. Oh right. She obeys authorities, but stretches her own.
The whole part where she believes what she does and is too stubborn/retarded to accept anything else would, I suppose, make her a Gryffindor. (Horror of horrors.)
But then the power-abusing part and the question of how she managed to get into power in the first place (pink! kitties!) brings to light some Slytherin traits.
Basically, Umbridge is one messed up person.

For some reason I always viewed her as a Slytherin. She is very ruthless to get what she wants.

No question about it in my mind, she is definately a Slytherin! She dislikes "halfbreeds", she abuses her power, she shoots off her mouth when she shouldn't, she is only interested in what is good for her, and she is frickin sadistic!

You have a rather low outlook on Slytherins, there, hehe. As a fellow Gryffindor, I can't really object too much, but I've always found that house rather intriguing. I've read some interesting fanfiction that centres more on the "driven" and less on the "evil and ambitious" side of Slytherin. To put
Umbridge in Slytherin simply because we dislike her is not too fair to them.

The fact that she is driven and ambitious, however, might put her there. She looks to power and her personal order as her main goal, which would be a rather Slytherin thing. At the same time, I can agree with turayza that she is rather brave in her own, screwed-up way, as well as foolhardy and, as we can be at times, single-minded. Which could, technically, put her in Gryffindor. I don't believe any of the other Houses are even an option. She's too plain dumb to be in Ravenclaw and I doubt her loyalty is the kind that would get her put in Hufflepuff.

...And back to Umbridge.
Truthfully, I think Slytherins are very honorable. They may have 'old' thoughts and beliefs, but there is nothing in them that labels them as "bad". I'll point out the 'bad' stuff in all the other houses. From the Gryffindors, you get the stubborness, the unwillingness to see the other point of view, and the killer bravery. Literally killer. From the Hufflepuffs, you get the people who think of others too much, which screws up their own lives. The Ravenclaws, who are too smart for their own good, and--in a sense much like the Slytherins--will go to great lengths to achieve that little snatch of knowledge. (These are, of course, all my random interpretations) Rowling doesn't give us much about Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, unfortunately. But Slytherin isn't full of evil people. Just...Republicans. Reminds me of Rome.

Disliking halfbreeds isn't necessarily a Slytherin trait. Though this may come from my fanfic-mixed info, some purebloods in Ravenclaw also showed disdain for people with non-pure blood.
Abusing power doesn't really fit into any of the houses. After all, the Founders chose people for their good traits, not the bad.
Shooting off her mouth when she shouldn't is, I suppose, a Gryffindor thing. After all, isn't that what gets Harry and Ron in trouble so often? Slytherins (I think) have the good sense to wait and judge when to make the knife hurt the most...
She is sadistic. Dunno if that's a Slytherin thing. But I don't think she gets the happiness from Harry's pain. Just how Harry has to bow down to her and stuff. Power-drunk, like.

Perhaps we should say Umbridge went to Beauxbatons. Or Durmstrang.
Have you noticed how, in the movies, all the Beauxbatons were girls, and all the Durmstrangs were guys? o.o It was weird.

I did notice that. Curious isn't it? The schools came off that way I guess. Feminine and Masculine. I'm not sure if that is mentioned in the book.
