"Aya" - "Memi" - "Ame" - "Mizu" - "Saki"

I'm only telling you this because life...

Ayame listened carefully for the approval for her to enter. Once she heard it, she slowly opened the door, taking a step into the room. Almost on instinct, her gaze swiveled around, taking in details most people wouldn't bother to notice. She was observant, after all. Her gaze switched from the one person to the next, before she set her gaze on the Mizukage.

"I am terribly sorry for the interruption. But I was told to make sure you had a copy of my records," she said, giving a slight smile before moving forward to place the scroll on his desk gently. It had her name and rank scrawled across it in faint ink. "I'm new, if you couldn't tell," she said, laughing a bit as she waited for him to acknowledge the scroll. She wasn't nervous in the slightest. But the fact that she had most likely interrupted a conversation left her feeling a bit bad. She hated to be a bother to people, especially those she didn't know well. She ran a hand through her short hair, glancing past the Mizukage at the window, the slight odor of smoke reaching her nose. It was mostly gone, but she could barely smell it. Ayame confirmed that it must be the reason the window was propped open. It was such things that distracted her as she waited, her attention a bit scattered.

As the girl apologized, Luo's interest was piqued at the possible sight of the first genin with manners. However, as she spoke once more he realized she wasn't quite there yet. His eyes never left her gaze, the name on the file visible from his peripheral vision. "Usually, a shinobi presents themselves to other higher ranking shinobi, officials, or even a citizen they have been asked to protect. I think it safe to say that this courtesy should be included when greeting me in the future, as well as any other higher ranking shinobi." It was just about the same thing Luo said to every genin who came to his office, something he was beginning to detest for the mere fact that he loathed to repeat himself, even if the other party did not know that was the case. Still, he didn't think any child in Kiri left the home without being taught how to greet others of higher status, be it age, rank, or even wealth. Luo was a stickler for manners, a trait he exhibited in spades. Some even said that it spilled over into his combat strategy, thinking it to be the true reason behind why he never attacked first.

"So, shall we introduce ourselves again?" With a slow nod as if to prompt her to try again, he waited patiently despite having already known her name. It seemed like a pain now, however in some situations it was manners that saved that man's life.

Ayame's face colored slightly as she realized her mistake. "Oh! Forgive me. It seems I left my manners at home," she said, stepping back to give a slight bow. "My name is Ayame Mizuko." She stood upright again, her cheeks their normal color as she met the gaze of the Mizukage. "Most people, however, find my name to be 'too long' and shorten it. You may call me whatever you deem worthy," she added, giving a bit of a smile. She was still a bit embarrassed, seeing as how she forgot to introduce herself to one of the most important ninja in the village. "I was a bit caught up in looking around to remember my manners. I will remember them in the future," she promised, giving him a slight nod, fighting to keep her gaze set on him instead of letting it wander. She liked to know her surroundings, but it had already cost her docked points on her first impression. She couldn't let herself get too distracted.

As the girl's face flushed and she recognized the mistake, Luo nodded as if to say it was alright. At least that part of the first encounter was over with. "It's quite alright Mizuko, just don't forget it in the future. As for your name, I find its length to be just fine with me unless you wish to be called something else." Pulling the file closer towards him, he opened it with his left hand and scanned it with his eyes. He'd seen the information before once she entered the academy, however once a student graduated the information was updated to keep up with their stats. Looking through it, he noted her chosen profession and thought highly of her chosen field. Not many people realized the importance of medical shinobi. "So tell me Mizuko, why did you become a shinobi of Kirigakure?"

I'm only telling you this because life...

Ayame waited patiently as he questioned her. She tilted her head a bit, pondering her answer. It wasn't a hard answer, but still, she wanted to say what she meant. She spoke slowly, forming her answer in her head as she did so. "My loyalties have always lied within the Water country. My family used to live there before the accident. I believe that my parents knew people within the village at one point. Anyhow, they always told my brother and I what a great place the village was and how noble their shinobi had been. As I grew up, I did a bit of...research, you could say. The thought of being a ninja of the Mist fascinated me. I wanted to be able to help people within a village I knew a bit about, rather than one I had no ties to. I chose Kirigakure, and became a ninja here, to help in any way I possibly can," she finished, biting her lip a bit. She hoped she hadn't rambled on about it. It was a simply question, after all. But she wanted to attempt and explain her reasoning thoroughly.

"I see," the man said as he stared back at her blankly. His face depicted no real emotional lean towards one way or another, and his eyes seemed as if he were looking through the girl rather than at her. The question was usually meant to be a quick mental evaluation of the person and their reasons for wanting to join a shinobi army. In his first year as Mizukage, Luo prevented twenty-three students from surpassing the rank of genin or even receiving any further training. One would think it to be a disadvantage for him to do such a thing, however what he saw in those young children was the potential for sheer chaos. It was argued that doing this in essence forced him to make himself a target for those children should they somehow receive training, however that was his goal in the first place. If someone such as that somehow managed to pursue a shinobi career, Luo hoped that he was a primary target. It would make it that much easier to eliminate the target if he didn't have to waste the time looking for it. With Ayame however, he saw that she was truthful in what she said, despite the answer for Luo being a rather overused one.

"Many believe that to help and to fight are two very different things. A carpenter helps build homes, a doctor helps save lives, a diplomat helps countries and villages. How did you come to the conclusion that the shinobi way of life which is rooted in a river of blood, could be of any help to people? Or rather, how did you conclude that this was the only way you could help people?"

Ayame tilted her head as she once again pondered her answer. "Fighting and helping can be the same thing and different things, depending on the views of the person the question is being asked to. I see them to be more of the same thing. You're asking me how being a shinobi, one who spills blood and fights others, could be helpful to anyone. Am I right?" she asked, waiting a moment to gather her thoughts before proceeding. "I didn't conclude it was the only way, Lord Mizukage. I felt that it would be the best way for me. You see, I am aspiring to be a Medical nin. But, that is not all I want. I want to be able to fight our enemies and keep the village and our allies safe, which is why I chose a shinobi life, while still being able to help people, who get hurt in the process of the fighting, with the medical techniques I hope to learn. If I am getting away from your question, then please let me know so, so that I may rephrase and explain," she added, taking a slight breath. Rambling wasn't an unusual thing for her, but she did it without realizing it.

Nodding towards Ayame as she rephrased the question in simpler terms, he allowed her to finish her explanation. It was a truth that the shinobi life was a dual edged blade. It was meant to protect and save people, however it came at the cost of another usually. It was something children often times didn't really think about, and thus something Luo always wanted to address. "A medical-nin's hands aren't always as sterile as one would assume. Often times, they are the most dangerous type of shinobi you can encounter. With that in mind, I truly hope that the path you have chosen is the one you really want. Once you become a shinobi, there is no retiring with honor for quite some time. It is a duty which calls at any and all hours of the day and night. It requires often times performing without questions, killing without clear objective. Its only saving grace, is the comradeship between those within the field you have chosen. You may not be able to see your family as often as you'd like, and often times you will feel as if your squad is your new family. Is this a life you have determined you can handle?"

Ayame nodded, meeting his gaze, before answering. "Yes. I assure you, Lord Mizukage, that if I were not sure, I would not be standing before you right now. I know what it means to be a shinobi, and I am willing to risk my own life for the good of others. If I couldn't handle it, I wouldn't have even bothered joining. Sure, it will take some adjusting, but I will handle it. I am positive of that," she said, glancing past him a moment before looking to him once more. "I am confident in the path I have chosen, and I look forward to starting in my training as soon as I possibly can," she finished, giving a slight smile. She had known since the day she joined the Ninja Academy that she had wanted to be a Medical nin. And now she was determined to fulfill her desires and help the village in any way she could.

For what seemed like an eternity, there was nothing but silence on Luo's end. He began to make movement, and no one in the room could make heads or tails of what he was about to do. Placing both hands on the desk, he pushed himself up into a standing position, his gaze unyielding throughout the process. At that moment his hands fell to his sides as his upper body lowered until his entire frame was at a ninety degree angle. His well kept hair fell to the sides as his bangs dangled in front of his eyes as he muttered in a tone that changed from the usual flat to something of a sincerely thankful voice, "In that case thank you, Ayame Mizuko. Thank you for your loyalty to this village. For your loyalty to its people. Above all else, thank you for your loyalty to the freedom of my country, our country."

For the other two in the room, what Luo did may have seemed out of the ordinary even for him. The man who was often called the polite Yondaime, was bowing to a genin he had only just met. Sure he was a stickler for manners, however the situation for most didn't call for such a reaction. However, earlier that day at lunch he had said something which weighed heavily on his mind after it was repeated to him. 'Respect is something given and just as well returned,' the words echoed in his head as she spoke earlier. This was his true stance, and how he felt he should thank someone who may very well give their life for his village, for his people, at his command. Each and every shinobi deserved the utmost of his respect. For if that was not the case, it would not be so readily returned. Furthermore, his decisions held the lives of many within them. One slip up and a shinobi could die, something Luo had luckily avoided apart from the demon attacks. He needed to respect these men and women as the strong and capable individuals they were, not pawns in an army he was the general of. No, Luo was certainly not that sort of leader. As a shinobi himself, he felt it vital to show that even in his position, he held the career of a shinobi in the highest of esteems, indeed worthy of a full bow from the Mizukage himself.

Ayame watched silently as he moved to stand up. When he bowed to her, she wasn't sure what to make of it. Surely it wasn't normal...but she would not protest. She took a step back and bowed in return, smiling a bit. "No, thank you, Lord Mizukage. It is an honor to be able to acknowledge myself as a shinobi of the Mist. I will not fail you or this village," she said softly, staying in her bowed position before slowly rising up. She gave another smile and a slight nod. Already she respected him. She had no reason not to, and respect was something she valued. It was a vital thing, especially when running a country as he had been doing. Without respect, people would try to walk over you, and that couldn't happen. It's why she was usually well-mannered and kind to all she met. Somehow, she had a feeling that most people who met the Mizukage respected him right off. It was hard not to.

Matsuya had continued eating while Luo and the genin had spoken. His mind was running again. So Luo would not allow them to act publicly against Zin and Konohagakure. Just as Tares had predicted. They would have to carry out any investigation from other channels. Another perk of being an information broker. He could gather the information he needed without the connections or sanctions of a village. It was just him, Matsuya pulling the strings. He smiled a bit to himself as he popped a sushi roll into his mouth. He eyed the apple in his lap. That was his real goal behind eating at this point. Just to get to that apple. The crimson fruit sat there shining, taunting him. It knew he couldn't eat it until he was finished with his meal. That was the way things went. At least around people. More so around Luo and his strict set of rules. Desert before a meal would be rude. And Matsuya's enjoyment of apples put them in the in the category of desert.

And then two things happened that caught Matsuya's attention. First was Ayame's pledge of loyalty to the village. From what Matsuya could tell from her voice and body language, she was telling the truth. Her was a girl that Matsuya was sure would lay her life down for the village if it was needed. She was one of the good ones, he could tell already. The second thing was Luo's reaction to this pledge. Matsuya's eyes widened a bit as he saw it. Luo bowing to a genin was something Matsuya had never witnessed. Matsuya raised his head and looked up at the scene, a large smile crossing his face. So Luo saw the potential in this girl too. In all reality, though, Matsuya was drawing a blank on medical ninja in the village that could train Ayame. In the old days, it would have been Zane and his trademark "learn through pain" training style. But these days, Kirigakure was in a severe shortage of medical ninja. At least to Matsuya's knowledge.

"Hmph" was all that came from the man as he nodded once emphatically after the girl spoke. She was young and ambitious, something he liked to see in his genin. Although to be honest, he himself was still young and ambitious as well. Still, it was good to know that there were still good students in this world. Walking around the desk Luo walked until he was three feet away from the girl and muttered, "Dr. Lothar at Kiri Medical is our Resident in Chief of the teaching program there. He's a little eccentric and is....fond of quite a few unhealthy beverages, but trust me when I say the man is well suited to have the position he does. Tell him I sent you and give him this..." Luo produced a piece of paper from an inner pocket of the Mizukage robe he wore, producing a blank piece of note-paper. Or at least, what looked like a blank piece of note paper. However, it was paper used in the house of the Ushio, with the clan's watermark to prove it. It was all she would need to prove that she wasn't simply trying to get training before she was allowed to.

As he held it out he then said, "...You're a bright one according to your file. I expect to see you give me and this village 110% from this point on. Do you understand Ayame Mizuko? If so, you may leave."

The girl listened carefully, muttering the name under her breath. "Dr. Lothar...got it. Thank you, Lord Mizukage," she said, slowly taking the edge of the paper, looking up to him. "I understand, sir. I will do my best so as to not disappoint anyone. I look forward to getting my training done," she said, giving a smile before gently taking the paper. She tucked it away in one of her pouches and gave a bow, before nodding. "Then I shall take my leave. If you need anything, let me know, okay? I'll be more than happy to help out," she said, giving another slightly wider smile before turning to leave after she had been dismissed. Seeing the other two shinobi in the office, seeming to have just not noticed them, she gave another bow to them. "Good-bye," she said lightly, before moving to exit the office. She moved swiftly outside, dancing around just a bit in excitement. She was a Mist shinobi officially, and could finally start her training. She made her way to the Kiri Medical Center, all smiles and hopping steps.

Matsuya reclined a bit as Ayame left the room to go off and find training. He sighed contently, having finished his meal. He spun the apple on his finger tip precariously. A large smile crossed his face, betraying the fact that he'd been deeply saddened a few hours ago. He looked at Luo and spoke. "Well, she shows promise, don't you think? If there's one thing we're in a shortage of, it's enthusiastic genin." Matsuya let out a laugh and then continued, "But I suppose not all of them can be like us, eh? Sometimes I think the only reason we've made it this far is because we're far too stubborn to give in to this world's hardships. Some of us more than others, I suppose." His thoughts drifted to Zane, their lost brother. By far, he had been the most stubborn of them all.

Matsuya shifted his gaze to the apple he was still spinning on his finger. He dropped it into his palm and just stared at it. The fruit never failed to amaze him. The variety of colors they came in, this one being red. The tartness or sweetness signaled by that color. Matsuya thought for a split second that when his day came to retire and live a normal, peaceful life, he'd very much like to own an apple orchard. Maybe his new found desire for property could provide this. But, he'd wait to see what Luo had to say before he brought up his desire to own property within the village.
