J of The Wind Ah, What a good haul! Playinh HG, and I went to the safari one to catch Aaron, Solrock, Skorupi, Nosepass, and now On to Duskull! Almost on my way to finding Riolu... I can breed you a Riolu if you need. I have a shiny Lucario. >o>

I've never seen a shiny ever. If it weren't for pics I would think they didn't exist. I have three, but I've only caught one myself. P: Pretty sure my other two are hacked. You should try chaining, or breeding with a parent from another region.

Terribly sorry...
It's okay. xD I can give you two tips. Learn when to dodge, and learn how to use the camera. Fit the camera to your needs, it's the second most important skill you can have, the first being dodging.
Learning the monster's movements, signs, and having great weapons and armor means nothing if you can't dodge and look where you need to.
To be really honest Mizu, if this is your first Monster Hunter, take the time to learn the movements of the monsters first. Not that they're the same, but if you're new, you'll most likely take longer to adapt. Older hunters can get used to the similarities of the monsters, and adapt to the new.
But by all means get used to the game with the Bowgun, if you want. Being a gunner is fun. :3 You need quite a bit of zenny (gold) to maintain your bullets though. Unless you have a lot of items to combine.
Great Sword takes some time to get the timing right and stuff. I still haven't gotten used to it. D:
In any case, learn always. Especially if you want to be a gunner. Knowing the tells of a monster is helpful.

You know they have higher SPAtk than Atk, right? Only by like 10 points, but yeah.
